If you watched last night’s episode of “American Idol,” you may have noticed a new rule. Because last week’s broadcast ran about 8 minutes over schedule, producers made a new rule about the judges’ comments after each contestant’s performance: only two of the four judges are allowed to speak at a time.
“American Idol” tried to end on time Tuesday, implementing a format that allowed only two judges to review a singer.
Host Ryan Seacrest explained: “We’re working in teams tonight, so we make it in on time.”
Judge Simon Cowell said they had to do it that way because fellow female panelists Paula Abdul and Kara Dioguardi talked too much last week.
Still, the popular Fox talent contest ran three minutes over schedule.
Last Tuesday’s show ran over by eight minutes. Judges did not have time to comment on Adam Lambert’s rendition of “Mad World.”
I’ve said it before: who really cares what any of these clowns have to say? It’s America that votes on the contestants. Anyway, the format change is just another reason why there is so much tension at the judges’ table this season. Sources are reporting that only three of the judges will come back next year – but no one knows for sure which three will be returning.
It’s not just the contestants fighting to stay alive each week on American Idol. Both Paula Abdul and Kara DioGuardi are in danger of losing their spots alongside Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson at the overcrowded judges’ table next season, and the tension among the panelists has become unbearable.
“The plan to add a fourth person backfired,” an Idol insider tells OK! about the troubles that have been mounting since Kara joined the cast at the beginning of this season. “Now the producers are left with a tough decision: Do they go back to the original three-judge format, or leave Kara there?”
With all four judges in contract negotiation — and no ninth-season spots confirmed — the competition has turned fierce. “As long as the show brings in millions of viewers, everyone wants a piece of it,” says a pal of the former pop star. “Paula wants to remain on the program for as long as Simon is involved, and Kara’s trying to stay on for as much time as possible. She wants Paula to get the ax.”
The increasing turmoil marks a shift from the camaraderie once enjoyed by the female judges, who had been pals for a decade.
“Kara was bold enough to come tap me on the shoulder,” Paula has said of their initial meeting on an NYC sidewalk. After a few weeks of knowing the aspiring songwriter, Paula invited her to L.A. “I moved a complete stranger into my home and we were the best roommates,” Paula has said. “I took her all around, and she has become one of the most successful songwriters.”
But Paula shocked everyone when she told OK! in January, “Kara and I get along great and have known each other for years, but we tried four judges before when we had celebrity guest judges sitting in, and it just doesn’t work.” Kara hit back in a statement: “Paula has a right to her opinions, but I was disappointed by her comments and hurt that she did not address them to me in person.”
Soon, things turned from what Randy, 52, dubbed “man versus woman” to a girl-on-girl brawl!
The judges really need to check their egos – this show is about the contestants, not them! With the exception of Simon, any of the other three judges could easily be replaced by chimpanzees, and they would do just as good a job. The bottom line is, nobody cares about the judges or their stupid feuds, as long as it doesn’t ruin the show. All we care about is the singing!
Sad that the Hollywood media outlet thinks it needs a feud to get attention. The pr teams pair any star up for a feud. Sad talent stop working.
Simon is the only relevent judge, everyone else can go to hell. seriously i say keep simon and get 2 new judges that actually now what they are talking about
agree with WWoman
Paula needs to go…She can’t even form a sentence and it takes her forever…Kara is smart and I feel doing a great job along side Simon and Randy…Bye Bye Paula..go check in rehab now…
I totally think Kara is a weak addition to the season and it isn’t going to matter if they bring her back next season or not. I love how she is new, yet has an ego like she has been on AI for 10 seasons…
However she is an incredible songwriter I won’t deny her that.
I think that Kara is a rude snob. She acts like shes had a hit album or something. Sadly, compared to Simon who is a huge creator/producer, ect.., Randy who was in Journey & Paula who was the biggest things to hit the 80’s. Kara falls a bit flat. She needs to check herself at the door. I do admit that Paula is a little goofy but if it wasnt for her the contestants would never had positive reinforcement.
And why Adam can’t win? Can you please tell us what the article say? Thx 🙂
I love Paula’s drunen carcass! It is funny to watch. I am really hating Kara though. I am not sure what it is about her, but I find her so very annoying.
I hope Paula stays, every talent show needs the eccentric judge who makes no sense.
i hope kara stays, she’s hot
I didn’t like the way they did the judging – only 2 talk at a time. I want to hear Simon allllways! They need to let Kara go, Paula is right that 4 don’t work very well. Kara says too much, over does her advice and gets to babbling – they already have Paula to do that. Paula is more entertaining then Kara so they don’t need a boring version of Paula which is what Kara has become to me. I liked her in the start but have changed my mind. She looks like her jaw is always clenched too. Maybe they should only have Kara around for the audition portions but once they get to the Kodak and get down to the nitty gritty they just have the 3 originals.
It sounds like I’m the only one rooting for Kara! I think she actually has constructive comments and has more experience in the industry than most people know. She has written hit songs for numerous people and is no dummy to what sells. I value Kara’s opinion over Paula’s, mostly because she actually has an opinion. People typically have a problem with change though, which I’m sure adds to the pro-Paula stance. Personally, I’ll bet Simon’s the one that doesn’t come back, if anyone…
And why Adam can’t win? Can you please tell us what the article say? Thx (2)
I hate Kara. NOt a Paula fan either but if I had to choose, TEAM PAULA!
I say let the new judge go.If Paula and Simon go,I stop watching.
That old saying,”If its not broke, don’t fix it.” definitely applied. It wasn’t broke until they tried to fix it by adding the 4th judge.
Paula is value. That woman is out of her brain on pills and booze and it makes for pure car-crash tv.
I must admit that the addition of Kara makes me like and respect Paula a lot more. I disagree with just abt everything Kara says, which is fine, but it’s the tone of her presentation that’s unnerving and off-putting. I hope they go back to the three originals.
Can I just say – what the hell was Quentin Tarantino doing on the show telling the contestants how to sing??!! That was farcical. And he looks like a psychotic clown these days…
I like Paula. Simon wont let her go because he knows that most of the viewers like her. She adds her own brand of crazy entertainment and if you can get past the stuttering and pauses in her sentences, what she says does actually make sense. She does know what she’s talking about most of the time.
The article never says or gives a reason why Adam can’t win, it just goes on to point out that Adam would be better off if he loses AI. The boy winners have a history of low record sales, where as the girls go platinum. Chris Daughtry sold millions of records but didn’t win. I can see their point, even though they lied on the cover.
I adore Adam and hope that he becomes AI’s first openly gay winner.
Kara can go. If she were more like Simon, she could stay, but usually she just dittos Randy and Paula, she’s a waste of time.
