Britney Spears’ Circus tour feeling the recession; Brit is not engaged

Britney Spears is halfway through her 49-city Circus tour, which goes through the US, Canada, and the UK. There has been talk that the tour will expand to Europe, Australia, and that there will possibly be a second tour in the US (whether it will be a new show or a repeat of Circus is not clear). Unfortunately, the recession is affecting Britney’s plans for global (re)domination, and her people aren’t sure there will be enough dough to go transatlantic.

It seems like Britney might be up for it. A source says that she is “loving being onstage again,” and that “[h]ealth-wise, she’s progressing every week, it’s amazing. Britney was the single force for wanting to go on tour in the first place.”

Britney Spears’s father has been seeking permission from a judge to expand the pop star’s current Circus tour – but the dour economy may hamper those plans, it was revealed in a Los Angeles courtroom Tuesday.

The pop star, 27, is halfway into a 49-show tour through the U.S., Canada and the UK, with hopes to add more dates through Europe, Australia and a possible second U.S. tour.

“It hasn’t yet been determined whether it’s feasible to expand tours to the Europe or Australia legs,” L.A. Superior Court Commissioner Reva Goetz said following a closed-door discussion with Jamie and his lawyers.

“That will be determined in the future after everyone’s seen the analysis, in terms of the economy and value of the dollar,” Goetz added.

Jamie and another lawyer hold indefinite legal control over his daughter following her two forced hospitalizations last year.

The article says that Papa Spears was seeking permission from a judge for Britney to expand her tour, and this may be the result of his conservatorship.

My sister saw the Circus tour when it came to DC, and she came home saying that she “didn’t know where to look the entire night.” There were contortionists and acrobats and all kinds of special effects meant to put the mind on overload. All of these factors make for a good pop tour, but they also cost a lot.

In other Britney news: there have been all kinds of reports on Britney’s love life, but the latest (and craziest) comes from a German multimillionaire whose private jet pilot claims that he proposed to Brit at a Subway last week. How romantic! Spears’ rep has this to say about the engagement:

A representative for Spears said: “Britney is not engaged, she did not get proposed to at Subway last week – she is currently on tour – she is not getting married on a farm in Germany, she did not receive a $4.5 million marquise-cut diamond ring. Oh, and she has not been abducted by aliens either.”

[From NY Daily News]

Fair enough. She might not be going to Germany for a wedding, but hopefully she’ll be able to make it to entertain her fans.

    ~

Why do they give her a microphone?

  2. MSat says:

I just had to point out that Britney totally ripped off the “Circus” theme from Christina Aguilera, who had the exact same retro circus theme, similar costumes and everything on her “Back to Basics” tour TWO years ago. Not only that, but Christina sang her entire 2-hour show LIVE, complete with dancing, theatrics and stunts!

Maybe people don’t want to spend their hard earned money on a recycled, unoriginal idea and bad lip syncing!

  3. Lori says:

Didn’t Madonna do a circus theme before X-tina in the 90’s? I remember watching it on HBO. It’s all been done.

  4. paranel says:

All her shows have been sold out. In Los Angeles, Madonna was not sold out last year , I know because I was there and half of the arena was covered with a black cover but Britney is sold out for both nights in my Town Los Angeles( which is a hard task.) 16th and 17th of April. Again, I know because I am going to both tomorrow and the night after show.

  5. Lisia says:

I went to the Sacramento show and it was sold out…the show was awsome….with so many special effects. They have to put all of those distractions because britney can’t sing or dance.I would go again.

  6. Cinderella says:

If they can’t afford to take it global, just book her in Vegas for a year. The amount of money she would generate would be insane.

    No pun intended.

  7. yadira says:

Isn’t Christina Aguilera still doing the whole circus act? I mean that would explain the ridiculous clown make up and bleached wig.

  8. neelyo says:

Yeah, Madonna did it in 1992 or so with The Girlie Show.

Sounds like they’re putting this out in case . I can’t believe it’s doing as well as it is. Who has $300 to spend on a concert?

“They have to put all of those distractions because britney can’t sing or dance.I would go again.”

Why the hell go again if Britney can´t sing or dance? What is the point then…

  10. Zoe (The Other One) says:

This talentless oxygen thief was only marginally interesting when she was climbing The Stairway to Crazy.

Now she’s just a slightly overweight mum of two in ill fitting clothes mouthing along to a backing track. If youse want a circus go see Cirque du Soleil or something and stop putting money in this fame wh0res grubby little mitts.

  11. Girl from Denmark says:

    To Zoe:

    You´re so right!!

  12. Greg says:

Much like a circus it is not the ringmaster you concentrate on the whole time. Thus it takes the pressure off of Britney’s performance.
I do read many accounts that Britney is actually singing. Still I don’t why people comment on singers performances when they have no idea what it takes to accomplish this feat.

  13. Michelle says:

It just stands to reason that if you are going to a concert, the main attraction should be the singing of the artist you are forking over your hard-earned cash to see. Can you imagine, say, the Rolling Stones, lipsynching and having an entire troupe of dancers and acrobats? What’s the point of all the sideshow crap? It’s distracting, tacky, unprofessional, and screams “coverup for lack of actual talent” to watch Britney “perform”.

  14. JaundiceMachine says:

Interesting point regarding Brit’s role as the “ringmaster”, Greg. I suppose it would be psychologically easier for her to tour if she could a) be in control of the “Circus” and b) slip into the background if she starts to f*ck up the choreography.

I find it hard to believe this tour was “her idea” when she puts so little into it. Seriously – isn’t she a bit past her prime?

  15. Lina says:

@ StaN: I was wondering the same thing…

  16. Monalicious says:

KISS did a “Psycho Circus” tour in 1999 as well. Rocked hard!!!

  17. IFHM says:

Gee that’s too bad, maybe if we try hard enough we can get her to just give it up totally ’cause she is a has-been and totally SUCKS!

  18. britney is amazing says:

The show was amazing. I went to the staples center on 4-16 and I was speecheless. Britney is amazing, and she’s a good dancer. Britney fans don’t give a damn if she doesn’t sing, we’re the ones paying to go see her, so she should make a second US tour cuz I will definetly buy my tickets. Britney is a living legend.

  19. Shandi says:

    LOL at MSat-
Christina Aguilera’s show wasn’t really all that great and I completely agree with yadira that she obviously still thinks she is in the circus with her horrid hair and wretched makeup! She is sooo ugly and has never been more successful than Britney as far as sales of cd’s or tour tickets.
