Naomi Watts: ‘I wanted a place where we could snuggle as a family’

"Spotlight" New York Premiere
Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber are among the celebrities profiled in Architectural Digest’s “Celebrities at Home” issue, which is well worth picking up. (I know that this was published online last week but the print edition just came out and there are new quotes in there.) It has features on Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian’s homes and it features a look inside the incredible resort like property that Marc Anthony and his new wife, Shannon de Lima, had built in the Dominican Republic.

Naomi and Liev purchased two separate units in a duplex in Manhattan in 2012 and had them combined and renovated into an airy space with high ceilings, a huge kitchen and a kind of modern eclectic down-to-earth feel. You get the sense that there was a lot of thought put into the design and yet it looks easy and effortless. In AD, Watts explained how meeting Schreiber changed her life (she calls him “Mr. New York,”) and said that she wanted to create a space with a home-like feel. It’s a good read and a kind of intimate look into their day to day life. Watts did work with a design team to renovate and design the home but she gave a lot of input as well.

You can see photos from their home on Architectural Digest’s site, a video with photos is below and here are some quotes from Naomi:

On meeting Liev and moving to NY from LA
But then I met Mr. New York and everything changed. We fell in love, so I moved here and we lived in his fantastic NoHo place for years. We started our family and were quite happy.

On finding her current home
When I first walked in, my feeling was ‘wow, this is like a real grown up home.’
I just fell in love with this neighborhood. First thing I think people can say about living in Tribeca is it’s very family oriented. We’re a block away from the water. We get to use the West Side Highway all the time just going for bike rides or scooting.

On her mom teaching her to appreciate design
From the time I was a little girl, she was taking me to rummage sales and antiques stores. It was a terrific education.

On valuing comfort and togetherness
We put the booth because you don’t always want to have a gargantuan table for four people to sit at… The dining table is great and the barstools are fine for entertaining, but I wanted a place where we could snuggle as a family. I didn’t want to make a showhouse. I wanted a true home for us.

On her big kitchen
This will sound crazy, but I lie in bed at night and think, I can’t believe after all these years in New York I finally have a walk in pantry!

On having a nice home
I know I’m a grownup but there are many times in my like that I still feel like a kid. When you walk into this house and you go “Wow this is mine? how did this happen?” It’s impressive but again it doesn’t feel imposing or too grand or fancy it feels like a real home.

[From Architectural Digest, online, video interview and print edition]

I know it’s not everyone’s thing but I love to see celebrities’ homes and Watts and Liev have such a gorgeous space that’s still very inviting, just as she intended. You can tell that she really enjoyed putting it together too and that it took some time. In the full article, they explain that they closed the deal for the home right before Hurricane Sandy hit (in October 2012), that the place was flooded and it took a few months before they could start to renovate. I wish I loved my place like that but there’s always something to aspire to.

Oh and Naomi and Liev have in no way split up and this is just more proof of that. I’m still betting that Star was totally wrong.

I like seeing homes too; but it is a bit scary.. You give potential stalkers the blueprint of your home. They can see how to enter and such.. ‘

I wouldn’t do it if I had kids. But to each their own.

  2. Luciana says:

    Lovely couple. Lovely house.

  3. Nancy says:

Your home is your place of peace or should be, so I think she’s got it down. Further, I don’t think she’s crazy for loving her pantry, I love mine too, although I don’t lie in bed thinking about it at night.

  4. Chelly says:

That kitchen is about the size of my Manhattan apt.

  5. GlimmerBunny says:

I love them as a couple so I’m glad they are still together. Naomi is looking very thin though, but then again my mom is her age ans she’s absout the same size and tells me she just loses weight more easily as she gets older, so Naomi might be the same way.

  6. surferrosa says:

Sorry but they have hideous taste. Overpriced crap. The only thing good about the kitchen is its size. The designer should be sued for incompetence!!

  7. paolanqar says:

I love them as a couple.

  8. AG-UK says:

I like it but who knew, years ago when I lived in NY no one wanted to live down there.

    • SydneySnider says:

It’s the same here in Sydney, AG-UK Not too many years ago, one could buy an inner-city dwelling in any number of suburbs surrounding the CBD, for a song or two. They were full of Victorian and Federation houses, terraces and flats, and considered “budget”. Then the areas were gentrified, and now, even a basic two bedroom terrace fetches $1million.

I like Naomi, but don’t know much about him. She’ll always be the girl in the iconic ad for lamb, where she declined a date with **Tom Cruise** so she could stay home and have her mum’s roast lamb dinner…smart girl. 🍴

  9. Keddie says:

I like looking at celeb houses too but am I the only one who really dislikes this particular house? It doesn’t look comfortable, warm or cosy. There is so much going on. It’s definitely trying too hard.

    • Astrid says:

Not a place I’d like to “snuggle” in either.

    • sills says:

That was my exact reaction, “this is the opposite of inviting.” Such big, cold, white spaces, everything looks crazy expensive & I’d be afraid to touch anything.

Side note, I was surprised after looking at that YUUUUGE place to see that her boys share a bedroom. I thought that was only for us plebes in tiny digs!

    • alexc says:

Not loving it. Not a fan of too much black, white and red. Hate the kitchen floor. The squares are too small for the space and make it look overly busy, not calm or cozy. I think the stark colors make it look cold and “decorated”. The space itself is beautiful though with great light and the double height ceiling in the staircase area is sublime.

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

Yes, I had the very same reaction to it – and I really wanted to like it and thought I surely would, because I love Naomi. I’m truly surprised that it looks so cold, willed, and contrived. Almost as if no one really lives there and someone else designed it for them. Since I love her, I hope they’re okay–but he has always given off a vibe that worries me, like his ego and temperament make him not a good bet for “forever” stuff. But that’s just me. Wtf do I know.

We get Architectural Digest and they’ve been inundating us with peeks. Im looking for to the spreads.

  11. Julie says:

I’m sure she did work with a design team, maybe even an architect. It would be nice and appropriate to acknowledge them by name because their input into the success of the project was at least equal to or greater than hers. She’s a lovely woman, clearly, but going to flea markets as a child does not give you the design skills and talent required to make a home that looks like that. Beat me up for saying it but I’m tired of people not understanding the contributions of design professionals. What movie would only list the actress as its creator and not the director, screen writer, set designer, composer, etc?!

  12. siri says:

What she says makes sense, but it somehow doesn’t show in the house. It looks very ‘decorated’, with lots of effort, and expensive stuff. To me, not cozy at all. I remember SJP showing her’s, and that looked like someone actually lived in it. This here looks almost ‘sterile’ in comparison. But hey, THEY like it, so that’s fine.

  13. Crumpet says:

It’s beautiful, but not at all what I would c all “cozy”.

  14. Sarah01 says:

    Love love Architectural Digest!
When you see celebrity homes then you know these people make serious money, they super are luxurious. One my favourites was seeing Sophia Loren’s home in Italy it was perfection.
I have a similar teak furniture through out my home. Love the warm brown colour.

  15. Molly says:

They’ve created a home that feels good to them=success. For some of us, that open, airy, spare white space aesthetic is very calming, where for others, it feels cold and sterile. That’s why we each get to choose what feels cozy and most home-like for our temperament and lifestyle. I love taking a peek inside other homes, and appreciate seeing how people express their idea of “home” even when it’s not my style. Those windows, though! I’d kill for them.
