The MTV Movie Award nominations are pretty heavy on dudes, boy drama

For the past few years (just going by memory), it’s felt like the MTV Movie Awards are a really budget affair. I remember when real movie stars used to come out for the MTV Movie Awards, and it was an opportunity to play nice with a younger audience. Nowadays, barely anyone shows up and the red carpet is just a bevy of TV stars and wannabes. Hopefully, this year will be different. MTV just released their nominations list, and I’m hoping they actually get some of these people to the ceremony. Also: the list is very dude-heavy. All of the Movie of the Year nominees are about dudes. All of the villain nominees are dudes. All but one of the “Best Action Performance” nominees are dudes. The only even match-up is “Best Hero.” You can see the full list here. Some of the bigger categories:

Star Wars: The Force Awakens got the most nominations, and I truly hope Daisy Ridley and John Boyega come out for the show. Boyega in particular has been playing it SO smart about not oversaturating the media by attending the opening of an envelope. I think the only awards show he’s done so far is the BAFTAs, so it would be amazing to see him come out for MTV. What else… I’m glad that Straight Out of Compton got some big noms, and I’m glad that Charlize’s work in Mad Max is being recognized somewhere. I think the night will probably belong to Deadpool and Star Wars.

I mean happy for Star Wars and Creed but what a shit list. Anyways.. it not like these matter. I also do not think people will be coming from Star Wars as they are filming now.

    • Mia4s says:

Why bother being happy? It’s not a real awards show. They choose nominees on a publicity basis. I guess Star Wars might make for some good skits during the show.

  2. M.A.F. says:

Are we looking at the same list? How is this “dude heavy?” Because there is a guy in every category? Please.

And I hardly doubt the MTV crowd (is there one) saw Joy.

    • AnotherDirtyMartini says:

I think she’s especially talking about Best Picture. Check it out.

  3. Jenns says:

I love that they put Charlize Theron as the hero in Mad Max. Because while it was a Mad Max film, she was the real hero and star.

  4. Mia4s says:

Wow MTV is still trying….barely….but they’re trying. I love how they randomly change categories every year to try to get more stars in with nominations. As a commercial tool it’s not bad (as advertisements go).

    • Abbott says:

Yep. Was looking good: storm trooper, superhero, imperator, and then… mop lady.

  5. Abbott says:

Fire spitting guitar man in Mad Max was robbed.

  6. Brittney says:

    No Rose Byrne in Spy?!

Though 4 of the 11 “best fight” nominees are women (5/12 if you count the bear)… that seems like progress I guess.

But Kingsman, Joy, Vacation…? Just when you start to forget that studios pay for these things…

  7. AlmondJoy says:

I can’t stop laughing at the fact that Creed was a movie about boxing but it’s nowhere to be found under the nominations for Best Fight lol

  8. Sarah01 says:

I want to see more of John Boyega please!
He has a million dollar smile.

  9. mia girl says:

    What, no Spotlight?.
I’m shocked, shocked I tell you!

  10. Sam says:

Deadpool and Star Wars will win most of these awards. Personally I’m hoping for Deadpool.

  11. LOLADOESTHEHULA says:

ROSE BYRNE WAS ROBBED!!! JUSTICE FOR ROSE BYRNE!!! She’s such an underrated comedic actress. Her Rayna Boyanov was the highlight of Spy for me. Definitely one of my fave villains.

The mtv movie awards are joke anyway.

  12. Mia4s says:

Hahahahaha! I just realized MTV doesn’t have a “Best song” category! Oh the irony!
