Morrissey: Prince William is ‘an intellectual embarrassment,’ needs to go away

wenn22830704

In case you don’t know, Morrissey is the former lead singer of The Smiths and now a solo artist and professional curmudgeon. He is an animal-rights advocate to the exception of almost everything. Like, he sort of believes that a mass human genocide should happen just so animals can rise up and take back the earth. He holds very strong (some would say extreme) views about hunting, gun ownership, America, music, and of course, the British royal family. He has a particular hate-on for the royals and he occasionally provides some of the most amazing/unhinged quotes about them. One of the things he hates the most about the royals? The fact that they hunt. So of course Morrissey had many, many thoughts about Prince William’s interview last week, where William said he thought it was alright to kill some animals if those animals were old and infirm. Or if they were boars, pheasants or what have you. You can read Morrissey’s full comments here (he even included a Photoshopped image of the royal family’s heads-as-trophies).

If Prince William were black: “If ‘Prince’ William had endorsed shooting and killing this week, as he has, but ‘just happened’ to be black, not only would the media blast him to oblivion, but he would also be arrested and would have his many, many firearms confiscated. Obviously gun laws only exist in order to enforce upon people who are poor.”

William is dense: “William The Terrible laments the fact that many species will be wiped out by the time his daughter is 25 (by which he means ‘she will have nothing to kill’), yet he is too dense to realize that species are mainly being wiped out by people such as himself and his even-dimmer brother. William laments on behalf of his daughter, yet he doesn’t understand that all of the animals that he kills for fun are also daughters and sons and parents.”

On the killing of older animals: “William, why endorse the killing of anything? What is it about you that cannot survive without killing? If any animal living freely can manage to survive to reach an ‘old age’, why shoot it? Should it not be cherished for its determination against born killers such as ‘Prince’ William?”

William needs to go away: “William, please go away – to any of the many other islands owned by your grandmother. Go there. Stay there. Spare us of your children, and for your own sake, say not another word. You are an intellectual embarrassment.

The royal family: “[They have] no social use, are infirm, lazy, useless, unemployable and are also England’s most famous benefit scroungers – on whom the Conservative government are apparently determined to crack down.”

[From Morrissey’s statements to his fansite]

He apparently wrote another post – which I cannot find on the fansite – called “William The Terrible: idiot eternal,” wherein Morrissey asks if William “claims it is OK if the animal is infertile or past its best… Since all of these terms apply to ‘the Queen’, is William suggesting that she, too, should be shot?”

While Morrissey is definitely on the extreme end of things, it’s worth noting that there was widespread head-shaking and tut-tutting about William’s interview last week. I understood what he was trying to say, that some African conservation efforts are financially supported by wealthy Westerners paying big money to hunt and kill any of the big animals. But William’s message was pretty convoluted, and the message is utterly lost on people like Morrissey who don’t see any reason why the royals have to engage in any kind of bloodsport.

Morrissey is an opinionated old has been. I can’t imagine why anyone listens to what he has to say. Who cares what he thinks? Not that I’m a huge fan of Prince William, but I get so tired of these celebrities who think that their opinion is any more important than anyone elses.

    • Jegede says:

Exactly and Morrissey was once a supporter of the British National Front and said some pretty nasty things vis a vis other races.

So its interesting he, of all people, is now playing the – “If William were black” card.

      • Celia says:

No he wasn’t a supporter of BNF.

Well done on the ageist comments up top – why don’t you shop us all off to a human mincer soylent green style?

      • easi says:

He wasn’t a supporter of the national front. He dumbly used their imagery but he was also outwardly mocking them. I love moz, but sometimes he shows his own poor education. I agree that blood sports are absolutely deplorable. Its the desire these people have to kill that makes me baffled

      • Jegede says:

And when he called Chinese people “sub species” or remarked about immigration of ‘others’ to England?

He’s refused to answer questions referring on his many incidiary/nasty remarks over the years, when doing press for his bloated opus – Autobiography.

But he wrote for the Smiths and loves animals so that makes it alright then.

    • Anne tommy says:

I disagree with much of what Morrisey says but share his sentiments about royals. But I think it’s worth saying that while poaching is a huge problem in the case of some animals – heartbreakingly for example, rhino – environmental degradation and human encroachment and habitat loss is the major problem in many cases.

    • JenYfromTheBlok says:

William isn’t harmful per se, he does just enough to get by and is an example of a gentle family man. Royalty could behave much worse.

  2. Lizzie McGuire says:

Morrissey is that drunk uncle you have who from time to time says a lot of truths but since he has no filter, says them in a horrible, barely comprehensible way.

As for Prince Harry being dimmer than Prince William, back off Morrissey I will fight you.

    • Tash says:

I was about to write the same thing…agree with you on both counts.

    • Kate says:

I’ve seen many people who’ve actually talked to Harry say he’s nice enough, but as dumb as a box of rocks. I haven’t really seen anything that suggests intelligence from him. His mother was great with the press too, but she also made life decisions based on the word of her psychic and for every person she charmed there was another she bored to tears. None of his relatives are known for their great minds, at best they get kudos for not being as dense as the others.

      • Lizzie McGuire says:

I love Prince Hot Ginger Spice Latte, always have always will. I think even if he is “allegedly” dumb (I won’t believe it til I meet him, get on it Kensington Palace), he cares for people same as his mother did, he genuinely does meetings without looking miserable. I can’t say the same for Prince William who bails on every job he gets, even when he’s not qualified to do. To me Prince William is a douche & dimmer than his brother.

      • Kitten says:

I love Harry to death but I have to say that I tend to agree with you re: his intelligence. I don’t think he’s dumb per se but when I see him in interviews, I’m struck by how….common (for lack of a better word) he sounds. I guess I always expect some sort of refined, articulate elegance from a Royal, which maybe isn’t fair of me. Anyway, he’s a sweetheart and he’s sexy so there’s that 🙂

      • Tourmaline says:

I agree, Harry has a lot of wonderful qualities, but I don’t think “intelligence” in the normally accepted sense of the word is one of them. He has been quite open about not liking school and he barely got through the schooling he did have; plus his comments about how everyone should be required to do military service like he did..hmm.

    • Pinky says:

Word up. And in case I’m not being clear, lay off the animals!

      -TheRealPinky

    • Josefina says:

Yup. I agree with many of his ideas but hes such a douche. And sooooo overrated as a musician imo.

  3. Anett says:

OMG! This title made my day!!! Thanks very much!!!:-)

  4. Emily C. says:

Most species go extinct because of loss of habitat, not hunting. Also, saying wildlife are “daughters and sons and parents” — no. There are some animals that have a human-like family setup (beavers, for instance), but Morrissey’s anthropomorphism is off the charts. William’s thoroughly obnoxious, and I disagree with his stand on sport hunting, but Morrissey is unhinged and doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

  5. Kate says:

The ‘wealthy westerners pay for conservation through hunting’ is such bs. If that’s the goal, just get out your check book without the killing. Or better yet, petition your government to better fund conservation and to push for other countries to do the same.

It isn’t that expensive to get permission to hunt these animals. Many firmly middle class people do it. Even at the very top end of the scale, it’s not a relatively huge amount of money. All that revenue and so much more could come from plenty of other sources, if anyone cared enough to make it happen.

  6. Nancy says:

He has a few valid points but is basically over the top. He’s right about William and Harry, they do seem a lot like dad. I hate hunting, especially for the ivory tusks of elephants or hippos. I won’t even start on that aspect. If you’re keeping the balance of the animal in check, hunting is alright imo for venison or whatever meat you plan to eat. A bullet is better than starvation. However, to see a bear rug or lion’s head as a trophy to sick to me. So I guess I could have a convo with this Morrissey. Obviously the US isn’t the only country to question the intellect of its leaders.

  7. Jenni says:

    No lies detected.

  8. Basi says:

I love you Morrissey even though you say a lot of crazy things. Your music got me through my teenage years and through college. I then revisited you during both pregnancies. I love animals too and am thankful you speak out on behalf of them.
Just please don’t insult Prince Harry. He’s the good one!

  9. Betti says:

‘William the Terrible’ love it and so true but he’s wrong when he says Harry is dimmer than William – Harry might not be Einstein but he’s still smarter than Willy who’s degree was handed to him on a plate (he was hardly at classes). A bust light bulb is still brighter than William and Kate.

And yes, ITA, William should just go away.

    • Citresse says:

As far as William “going away”, I think deep down it’s what he wants.
ps- and remember he was such a disruptive little **** on the day of his Christening, he didn’t want to be there either.

      • Betti says:

ITA that deep down that’s what he wants but is refusing to admit that to himself plus there is no way Kate and Carole will allow that to happen without a fight – they have invested to much to lose it all. But they have built a house of cards that is going to fall around their ears at some point. At the moment the Mids are whispering to him that he can have it all and do whatever he wants.

Things will come to a head at some point with him – he needs o make a decision but that won’t happen until TQ passes and he becomes PoW.

  10. Laura says:

Morrissey may be a total grump, but he had me laughing with his take on William! Didn’t get why he was taking Harry to task though.

    • Kitten says:

      +1
I laughed at everything except the part about Harry.
He’s just so over the top that it’s amusing. Not to mention that there’s more than a kernel of truth underneath the hyperbole.

EDIT: Wait is Harry a hunter too?

  11. JenniferJustice says:

Hmmm….while I don’t support hunting for the sake of the sport of it, I do strongly support conservation and management which sometimes means allowing hunting of certain speices whose numbers, for whatever reason, increase and create an imbalance in the ecosystem as well as suffering via starvation and getting hit by cars. I would rather have an animal killed quick and clean and something of it used v. the often prolonged suffering associated with natural death. If we didn’t have deer hunting season in the U.S., the number of deer would sky-rocket and that means many would starve, many would be hit by cars and wander back into the woods to die a slow, painful death or be maimed and starve because of it. Too high a number of most species also paves the way for the spread of disease. I see hunting in terms of conservation as humane, not inhumane.

And yes to those who’ve said Morrisey might have some truths to share, but his message is lost in his approach. And really, it’s not cool to ever publicly declare someone intellectually stunted. Just because Morrissey is knowledgeable about some things regarding animals and art, doesn’t at all make him an intellectual. In fact, his continued belligerence says otherwise. The Royals may be a bit passe` in terms of their need, function, etc. but it’s not like William or Harry asked to be born into it. It is their lot in life and probably not one that any of us would choose knowing what’s expected and the bubble they’re trapped in. Perhaps the idea of continuing “royal” families should be investigated by the U.K. but until then, it’s not any royal’s fault they are what they are. Blame that on your government – not William or Henry.

  12. Redgrl says:

I want to be a professional curmudgeon!

  13. Bettyrose says:

I adore Morrissey. He’s been around long enough with a consistent enough message that it’s not like he’s just grabbing headlines. Plus, he doesn’t live in England, so he could ignore the RF but he has a platform of adoring followers (me) so why not use it? I rarely disagree with him. I make fun of him, criticize his whinier music, and don’t buy his celibacy crap, but when it comes to animals and world leaders, he’s usually on target with his message

  14. sofie says:

I like that he’s a fellow animal lover but he has always been so bloody miserable and needs his opinion known on anything & everything. Is there a person that he actually does like? Also the smiths so overated just really drippy music that moody teens swing their arms to.

    • H says:

Blasphemy, @sofie. The Smiths and The Cure got me through my Goth teenage years. As South Park says, “Robert Smith!” 🙂

    • Bettyrose says:

Ha! I love the idea of teens listening to Morrissey. Those days are long gone.

  15. Soprana says:

    “Spare us of your children”?

Please leave the babies out of this. Anyone who resorts to insulting someone else’s kids loses all credibility. It’s ok not to like Wills, but George and Charlotte certainly don’t deserve condemnation.

    • Timbuktu says:

And he didn’t condemn them, and he definitely didn’t insult them, he mentioned them. Not the same thing.
He’s clearly not a fan of monarchy and wants them to go away, so it’s understandable that he’s not enchanted by the future generation of royals being paraded in front of us.

  16. Dick Move says:

Girl, hold my hoops. Back off Harry, Moz!

  17. Eve says:

    LOVE HIM!

The Human species was the worst thing that could possibly have happened to this planet (my personal opinion).

    • truthSF says:

      +1000 EVE

    • Sixer says:

      *waves at Evelet*

I love him too. Professional curmudgeon is a cool job description if you ask me.

    • Kitten says:

      Yay! You’re here ♥

I actually thought of you when I read this, Eve. Knew you would appreciate it 🙂

    • antipodean says:

Hi Eve, great to see you. I tend to agree with you, Homo Sapiens have a lot to answer for, but there are still some good ‘uns.

    • EscapedConvent says:

Eve! Eve! Eve! You have been missed. 😘

      • Eve says:

@ Kitten, TruthSF, Sixer, Antipodean and, of course, EsCon:

And I Love you all in return.

        :*

P.S.: Even T. Fanty, who’s not giving two shits about me. *humpf*

      • antipodean says:

Holla back, Eve, yes, where is T.Fanty when you need her? I haven’t seen her for a few days, maybe she is having a rest from commenting. Hopefully she will be back with bells on, soon.

I love Morrissey, have loved the Smiths for years, but his comment about Prince William being black …gah. This is the downfall of the left: black = poor. Race is just defaulted to as an automatic social disability, and I really resent that bc it doesn’t leave room to ever normalize that black = normal. No doubt there are a lot of problems regarding systemic racism and the poverty that it cycles over, but at some point, the progress has to be acknowledged. Being of a certain race doesn’t necessarily mean that you are automatically poor, and poverty touches every race out there…. Bernie Sanders recently had a “black = poor” comment not too long ago. White liberals should look at their friends of color and look to them as the standard bearers …Even in my own circle of well meaning white liberal friends, I don’t like the automatic assumption that I am disadvantaged and need help bc my skin is brown. I went to the same school as you, my parents paid my college tuition and bought me a car also!

My liberal friends: I know there’s racism out there that is messed up, but can we just point out that it’s likely some of your immediate black friends (or one friend or coworker) are not living in shacks, shopped at IKEA and only eat organic too? Can we start using the word “SOME”, and not the superlative form statements that “Blacks are poor, disenfranchised and discriminated against” bc we have to acknowledge the progress at some point? At some point, we have to start normalizing pieces of this “racial equality” we keep saying that we’re fighting towards…

    • Kitten says:

You make SO many good points and it’s something I try to be more cognizant of because these very real facts are often forgotten in my enthusiastic attempt to be an ally. But yeah, I am absolutely guilty of exactly what you describe here and I’m embarrassed by some of the statements I’ve made around here without thinking it through. While they were made with the best intentions, ultimately they were pretty tone-deaf.

It’s just so damn easy to get caught up in blanket statements in an attempt to defend and push for equality, completely unaware of the fact that we’re actually perpetuating and reinforcing stereotypes at the same time.

Meanwhile, the smartest, most educated and most professionally successful guy I ever dated was a black investment banker. Man he was so hot too…boy did I blow it with him. Sigh. But I digress……

      Anyway, LOVED your comment.

    • Timbuktu says:

      Thank you for saying that!
I was just thinking about that the other day. Some person on FB was going on and on and on about how all black schools are inner city schools, and don’t have books or working bathrooms, etc., etc. I work in a predominantly (96%, I believe) black school, it’s an old building, so yes, bathrooms are not always working well, but come on! Not all black schools are inner city schools. We’re planning an expensive field trip soon, none of the parents said “boo” about coughing up money, children are clean and well-dressed, and there are plenty of good caring parents, and even – gasp – very present, hands-on black Dads! In fact, I’m not sure I have a single child raised by a single black Mom in my class. So much for stereotypes.

    • Veronica says:

Thank you for pointing that out. I started reading it and agreeing with his point – and then BLAM, random insidious racism. Both points are salient – poor and non-whites are generally singled out crimes that we forgive in economically powerful whites, but the presumption that they automatically go together is really problematic.

  19. sauvage says:

I am a hopeless animal lover. We have a corgi and an exotic shorthair, and we love them to pieces. We also are what you call “people persons”.

What I don’t get, are people who claim to love animals, but hate humans. Morissey is starting to sound like one of those, like Brigitte Bardot, too, for example. What is that, self-hatred turned onto all of humankind?

    • Bobbie says:

I don’t think he hates humankind though – just idiots like William and leaches like the Royal Family. And who can blame him when so many people are living in poverty yet it’s acceptable in this day and age to faun over the biggest welfare beneficiaries ever, and allow them to have every single privilege going while other people are suffering?

  20. Bobbie says:

I think he’s raised some very good points! And I thoroughly agree with everything he’s said. What would be funny, is if the Queen gave him a Knighthood – would his views then change?

    • Anne tommy says:

While I very much doubt that it would happen, I would assume he would turn it down. People are approached privately beforehand and some decline “honours”. David Bowie and Mark Rylance among many others I believe. It would be rank hypocrisy if he accepted.

  21. Choo says:

William is a balding, hypocritical douchebag who loves killing things.
Harry is indeed a dimwit toff who also enjoys killing things, but who’s the thickest – can anyone tell?

The Royals are just bad. Please take them off our hands.

  22. Pandy says:

I don’t understand how you can form
A charity to stop poaching but still thrill kill. Pick one Willuam. Stop talking from both sides of your mouth.

  23. Carol says:

I can’t stand Morrissey and his stupid extremism. But he did give me a little chuckle today.

  24. Jayna says:

Morrissey is a mess. When he tours, it is like playing Russian Roulette, when purchasing a ticket especially if traveling and making those types of arrangements for it. Will he cancel by the time of your show or even the whole rest of the tour? He is always bitter about something. I still love the man and his music, though. LOL

  25. BritAfrica says:

Morrissey is an un-intellectual embarrassment and needs to shut up and stop annoying everybody!

I don’t deny that the Royal family are past their ‘sell by date’ but so is Morrissey. Go away old man!

  26. Timbuktu says:

Does anyone see any reason for anyone to engage in bloodsport? I don’t even consider myself a huge animal lover, but given how rigged those “hunts” seem to be (every time there’s a scandal, anyway), where’s the thrill (mind you, I still don’t get the thrill either way, but I suppose sportsier people might?) And without the thrill, are you just doing it for the sight of blood and agony? Cause that’s just sick.

  27. Gigi says:

    Morrissey is a misogynistic ASSHAT.
