Mike Tyson speaks about Chris Brown: ‘It’s wrong to hit a woman’

If you’re a guy facing felony domestic violence charges for beating your girlfriend’s face in, the last person you want to be compared to is disgraced former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson. Mike’s laundry list of crimes against women is epic. But when Tyson was recently asked his opinion about the Chris Brown case, his answer was surprising. The former champ identified with Brown, saying that he’s familiar with the psychology behind what Brown did, but he also said that the R&B singer needs to get control of his emotions- and that it is wrong to hit a woman.

Mike Tyson – who was accused of beating Robin Givens and was convicted of raping Desiree Washington – says he can relate to Chris Brown, the 19-year-old singer who allegedly beat Rihanna.

“It’s none of my business, but you know what I say about that? I understand the situation. I understand passion with young kids,” Tyson, 42, tells MTV News.

“My personal opinion about that is, he’s just a baby,” adds the former heavyweight champ, who is the subject of a new documentary, Tyson, out Friday. “He’s just a little baby that don’t know how to handle his emotions when it comes to a woman. And he probably hears this and thinks, ‘I know how to handle my emotions’; we all think we do.

“But the fact [is],” Tyson continues, “you look at this person and you might be crazy in love, but we don’t know how to handle those feelings.”

What could have led Brown to beat Rihanna, 21? Tyson blames a “pimp mentality” that is prevalent among young people. “Now you’re a fly guy and a cool guy [you think] … you have to be hard like that,” he says.

In the MTV interview, Tyson appears contrite about his history of violence towards women.

“You can’t abuse them,” he tells MTV. “It’s really sick what you [can] do. She has a space in your heart and you believe you care about her more than anybody in the world.

“Do I think it’s right to beat up a woman? No — hell no,” he adds. “Have I hit a woman before? Hell yeah. Was I wrong? Hell yeah. I’m a product of that environment. Do I regret ever doing that? Hell yeah. Would I do it again? Never.”

Well, there you have it: the one guy you probably thought would be rushing to defend Chris Brown is saying that it’s wrong to hit a woman. Who would have thought that the one-time poster boy for domestic violence would be one of the few male voices speaking out against what Brown did? Meanwhile, Diddy, Akon and Kanye West are still telling us that “we don’t know what happened” and that Brown deserves a break.

  5. ! says:

Whoa, wild that I actually respect what he said. Quite a bit. He explained the reasons behind his former actions, and admitted that he was wrong regardless. So few people own up to the shit they do nowadays. He sounds like he’s actually sought help.

  6. geronimo says:

Glad that he’s conquered his demons and has come out the other side. And kudos to him for speaking out. And I think his comments probably come closer to the reality of Chris Brown than almost anything else that’s been said publicly about him.

  7. Zoe (The Other One) says:

Respect to Tyson for speaking out but it’s too little too late for the women he abused.

  8. Michelle says:

Wow. A celebrity actually holding themselves accountable for their own actions, and admitting that they were wrong? I’m impressed by Mike Tyson. I’d still be terrified to be in a room alone with him as he intimidates the hell out of me, but I am impressed nonetheless that he actually learned from his mistakes and can articulate why what he did was wrong. Props to him.

I love this answer. I have so much respect for her. He’s been there and he standing up saying what he did in the past was wrong. And that her would “never” do it again. Amazing and mad respect to Tyson..

maybe mike is honestly trying to change; if so, good for him.

  19. gg says:

If these are direct quotes from him, it looks like he has learned from his mistakes. I am pleased to hear this.

IT TAKES A BIG MAN TO ADMIT HE’S WRONG.

  20. Mah boo says:

Tia and Wonder Woman, thanks for clearing that up ’cause I was like WTF?!?!?! Rodney King?????

  21. heh-heh says:

If this is an honest attempt at redeeming himself for his past bad judgment or reckless behavior, then good for Tyson.

  22. loldongs says:

Hello Mr. Pot, I’m Mr. Kettle!

    Hahahahahaaaa… ahh, Mikey.

You’re a ceaseless source of comedy.

  23. Diablo says:

Some one mention his former trainer, Cus D’Amato. He was more than just a trainer. Cus actually adopted Mike Tyson to get him out of a half way house. Cus was the first, and arguably the only, person in Mike Tyson’s life to care for him and actually set real boundaries for him. To go from a caring father figure like Cus to Don King, add in that his childhood was completely brutal, is it any wonder that he completely imploded as a person? Add in the fact that he was paid to basically trade blows to the head with other people, my god, it would be more surprising if Tyson was normal instead of f-ed up. This is not to justify his actions in the least, but my god, if anyone is the product of his environment, its Mike Tyson. And unlike many people that have done far worse, Mike Tyson has served his time. And not to sound cliche but he does sound like he has matured and benefited from leaving the ring and the boxing life style.

  24. tigerlille says:

Was it 20 years ago when Mike Tyson was finally found guilty of assaulting a woman, and served two years in Pendleton? At that time, reading an interview with him, he seemed to literally be a predatory animal. A nurse who worked with him while he was in prison told me that he was always polite and a gentleman when she dealt with him, unlike most of his fellow inmates. I am amazed by how articulate he is now, and by the wisdom of his hard earned insights. He has become a genuine role model. I really respect the man he has become.

  25. Good for him for admitting past mistakes and speaking out.
