Gwyneth Paltrow, beauty line shiller: ‘I’m not very good at putting on makeup’

I’m just going to keep reusing these photos of Gwyneth Paltrow, mmkay? I will never stop using these pics of Gwyneth in her ill-fitting Emilia Wickstead onesie. It’s perfect. Anyway, as we know by now, Gwyneth talks out of her ass whenever she talks about beauty, styling, hair or makeup. She’s been famous for a long time, and she’s been a rich elitist all her life. She’s never had to learn how to do her own hair and makeup and it shows, in event after event. She’s stuck in the ‘90s, her hey-day, for nearly everything. She still flat-irons her hair with a center part and thinks orange skin is high-fashion. Anyway, Gwyneth did a “day in the life” piece for Into the Gloss, and there were some typical Goop asides about how clueless she is about skincare, hair and makeup. Keep in mind: she spoke to Into the Gloss because she’s shilling for her Goop makeup collaboration with Juice Beauty!! She’s shilling for her own products throughout the piece, so you can read the whole infomercial here. Highlights:

Sweating in the morning: “My beauty routine starts with exercise in the morning. I do an hour of dancing every day—I’m a lifelong Tracy Anderson member. I wake up at 6:30am every day and I get my kids ready, take them to school, and then I go straight to the gym for an 8am cardio class. It’s key to get a good sweat every day. I think that’s an important foundation for a skincare routine. So I work out and then I wash my face in the shower, just with water.”

She’s not good with makeup: “I’m not very good at putting on makeup, which is, I think, a result of having had my makeup done for 20-plus years. But now I can do the foundation, a little cheek, and some mascara. Luckily I have my own foundation color because I helped develop it.”

Her hair: “My hair has three different textures—coarse, damaged, dry blond hair. It’s my nightmare. To wash it, I really like the Shu Uemura Ultimate Remedy Shampoo and Conditioner. And then…‘style’ is probably a broad term for what I do to it after I wash. I just air dry it and then put an oil in. There’s a Spanish oil I like called Orofluido, or I’ll use the Rodin by Recine Luxury Hair Oil. It’s very wavy, so if I have to go out, I’ll use Harry Josh’s flatiron on the underneath. But I leave the top as it is.

She’s constantly bathing: “I shower after the gym and scrub, and then at night I always take a hot bath at the end of the day. There’s this line out of England called Ila—they’re insane. They make the most incredible set of essential oils that I’ve ever used, and they’re named after all of the elements. So for my bath, I’ll put in some essential oils and then epsom salt from the drugstore. And then I moisturize…Tammy Fender’s Bulgarian Lavender Body Oil, I love. I’m very into oils for my skin. But I have to put them on dry, I can’t put them on wet. I can be a little dewy, but not wet.”

[From Into the Gloss]

CB knows more about makeup than me, and she always says that Gwyneth has some of the worst makeup jobs in the industry. I know hair pretty well, and I think Gwyneth has some of the worst hair in the industry. So it just kills me a little that Gwyneth thinks she’s enough of an expert to really talk about this kind of stuff. I don’t even believe Gwyneth has “three different textures” – I think she naturally has coarse, wavy dark hair and she’s been bleaching the crap out of it for so long, her hair has turned to unmanageable straw, but even that look would be better than her flat-ironed look. I also think it’s gross to not wash your face with soap after a workout.

    • stinky says:

…and ya that’s some bad hair. Spanish oils & all.

    • Gina says:

Ugh, that last jumpsuit pic makes her body look older than Blythe danner’s.

Also, ‘Gwyneth Paltrow, beauty line shiller: ‘I’m not very good at putting on makeup’” <– to this I say, "DUH."

Is there someone out there actually saying, I want my eyes and lips to look like Paltrow, and I will pay good money to achieve that certain 'eyebrowless hamster-eyed bleeding lipstick on thin lips look?'

  2. happyXamp says:

Trust us Goopy, we all know you suck at make up.

  3. D says:

Orofluido is really great , and it smells so nice.

  4. Gigi says:

I can’t get over this outfit……everything else is a blur.

  5. SusanneToo says:

Is face powder being rationed in Hollywood?

  6. gwen says:

At least there’s a bit of curl in her tired hairdo but that jumpsuit is straight out of wardrobe for Valley of the Dolls.

  7. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I needed the onesie today, more than you will ever know. Thank you.

  8. paolanqar says:

makeup and hair always look bad on her. her hair looks fried and her make up looks budget. I guess her skin is not great either considering her resources.
Holy camel toe in that jumper!
    Yikes!

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yeah, it’s quite something, isn’t it? I just want to keep talking about it.

Why do I get the feels that Goop is not going to in business in 4 more years…? I know she’s been flooded with VC money, but is the company actually turning a profit? It’s not like she is doing Maybelliene numbers, or has even Crate & Barrel reach– one thing in today’s world of fast tech and new entrepreneurs, expansion doesn’t always mean solid growth…I wonder about her business model bc her customer, I imagine – moneyed mom, Hollywood watching, older fashionista — is still a fickle client and she’s not exactly knocked the crown off of Martha Stewart’s head if that is also who she is gunning for.

    Anyway, just thinking out loud

I too bath twice a day. I cannot sleep if i have not batched.

  11. Tris says:

I swear, I could listen to her say stupid things all day long! Pictures of Harry, and quotes from Goop. Now that’s some good inter-webbing!

  12. Green Is Good says:

Hair Horror! Maybe if she stopped pretending she’s a natural blond, her hair wouldn’t look like dead straw.

  13. kai says:

Eh, I think it’s gross to wash your face with soap. (LIke the soap for you hands??? My skin would freak the f-ck out.) Unless you’ve been working in the coal mines all day, water should do just fine.

  14. Liz says:

For a while now I’ve noticed a difference in Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s face. She was naturally gorgeous but now there is something weird going on with her face. Whether it’s Botox or fillers I hope its reversible. Why mess with perfection??

    • Anesthetizes says:

Agreed Liz, Rosie’s using fillers and botox, imo. Too early for the fillers, and too aggressive in amount.

  15. Pepper says:

Her make-up is actually really well done most of the time. She just doesn’t pack it on like most celebs (not talking about people like the Kardashians, even people like Cate Blanchett wear heavy, bordering on theatre make-up that photographs beautifully and looks a bit crazy in person), or try to pretend her looks are something they’re not. Her real skin, her lines, her bone structure, it shines through. Which is nice I think. Yes she has sun damage, yeah her hair’s straw, but she looks fine. I don’t know why people have to make out like she’s some kind of bridge troll, she’s an attractive woman with a few fairly minor flaws.

Her make-up line is very simple, no fuss, natural looking. So that’s what she’s selling here. She’s not making pro products you need to be skilled to use, she’s making the kind of easy thing anyone can slap on and look presentable. What she’s saying here fits perfectly with her range.

    • antigone says:

I agree, Pepper! I find her personality annoying but I think (aside from some bad fashion choices such as the camel toe onesie) she looks fine. She looks like what she is-an attractive woman in her early 40’s.

      • Suninsagittarius says:

I saw Gwyneth (with Drew and Cameron) at a NYC restaurant the end of the last year. She looked stunning in person; very pretty and natural and gorgeous hair. I didn’t meet her but from two-tables-over she just glowed. I met Cameron, her face looked over-filled her eyes tired and Drew, though lovely, seemed a bit low energy and unhappy.

  16. Magnoliarose says:

Where can I buy a Vaggiejumpsuit? I’ve been looking for one for years. Leave it the Goop to one up me yet again!

I bet she thinks her sporting the same look makes it her signature classic style. Like she imagines when she dies fashion followers everywhere will harken back to the real fashion plates of the past like Audrey Hepburn, Coco Chanel, Jackie Kennedy and Gwen. Just one name is all that is needed.

  17. sofie says:

Why is she telling us her beauty routine? Why do a lot of celebs tell us their routines? Not everyone wants to be like or look like them.

  18. Carol says:

Oh, that second pic of her is unfortunate.

  19. KiddVicious says:

I love Goop. She’s highly entertaining. And not in the way she wants to be.

They make gentle cleansers specifically for the face, people should use them. A friend is an esthetician, she was giving a woman a facial and black oils started coming out of her pores. She asked her what she used to clean her face, the lady said “just water”. So, yeah. Use cleansers.

  20. lucy says:

    Yeah, we see that.
Also not very good at dressing herself or doing her hair.

  21. yas says:

Celebrities I would ask for skincare/makeup advice over Goop: Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, Iman, Cate Blanchett, Helen Mirren, Rachel Weiz, Cate Blanchett. Goop would probably be dead last. I would ask Courtney Love over Goop.
