Here’s something I didn’t know: Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio are friends in real life. I figured that they were friendly in a professional sense, but I had no idea they were let’s-do-lunch girlfriends. According to Star Magazine, they are lunch girlfriends. And not only that, they like to loudly complain about the young whippersnappers coming up through the ranks. Whippersnappers like… Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid, arguably two of the most well-known of the younger models.
It’s a catwalk catfight! Seasoned supermodels Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio couldn’t stop trashing new beauties on the block Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid during a recent brunch in LA.
“Adriana and Alessandra were like high school mean girls,” reports a fellow diner who spotted the Victoria’s Secret vets at the Brentwood eatery Tavern on March 15. “They were dissing Kendall’s runway walk and laughing about how bland she was. They called Gigi ‘talentless’ and said both of them are only famous because they were on reality TV.”
Adriana, who feels like she has paid her dues as a model, hasn’t been much more diplomatic during interviews, sniping that while the 20-year-olds are pretty, “you have to have character [and] something that [outshines] everybody else.”

That Lima quote is from an appearance she did on Watch What Happens Live in December. She was asked specifically about Kendall and Gigi and she said, “I think that that in these days, the fashion industry has changed. Everything is not only just about beauty. In my opinion, those two girls are gorgeous. But you have to have character…You have to have something that shines and outstands from everybody else. I think they’re definitely different and charismatic and I think they’re going to be successful.” Which is actually a compliment – she’s saying that Kendall and Gigi have that x-factor needed to be real models. Now, is that how she really feels? I’ve long suspected that a lot of the models who came up pre-social media are rather upset by how easy it was for the Kendalls and Gigis of the world to get a leg up.
As for the Star story in total… yeah, I don’t think much of Kendall’s modeling skills either. I actually don’t think she has any kind of x-factor, and she’s just not a compelling model, in my opinion. But I like Gigi Hadid a lot. I think she’s beautiful and incredibly watchable. Gigi reminds me a lot of the supermodels in the 1980s.

Yeah watching the more recent Victorias secret shows compared to the Adriana/Gisele/Alessandra heyday of 2005-2006? I can see what they mean. They were more exciting.

The fashion industry wants it this way. The people in power don’t want the return of the 90s supermodel because those models had more independence, more power. Cindy, Linda, Naomi, Christy, et al. overshadowed the clothes and the designers. They were as famous as movie stars. They could dictate terms and couldn’t be easily controlled by the industry. This is why we now have bland, basic, and – especially – younger and younger models because they’re more naive and easier to manipulate.
Hm, good point. That would explain why all the models today strongly resemble beige coat hangers.
It was certainly this way for a time because of a backlash, but then many people in the industry recently realized they needed some stars to garner interest in fashion after all. The supers of the 90s are coming back again and it’s a direct response to the IG/Nepotism models. The public loses interest and there aren’t even actresses anymore that are total fashion girls. Actresses replaced the models for a time but now fashion is sort of stuck, so they push these two. It’s an industry in transition right now.

Despite her claims of “hard work”, I think if it weren’t for her family, she never would have gotten as far as she has.
I know nothing about modelling and I couldn’t pick either of these women out of a line up, but the blond one does seem to be in a different class from the brunette; she knows how to stare down a camera.
Yea they are both bland and basic. Even at the VS show which is supposed to be fun and flirty she looked bored

As for Kendull……. that last pic says it all lol. This girl would never have got anywhere near high fashion without Kanye single-handedly making her family acceptable to the designers who would otherwise have rightly dismissed her as too downmarket-looking and dull.
Kendall is just pretty and it’s quite suffocating that there are way more talented young ladies who deserve that spot more than her, but hey, because of Kris and Kanye, she’s ‘one of the biggest’ today. That pisses me off.

Don’t get me started on how Lauder sold themselves out. Kendall Jenner. Kendall Jenner? After Liu Wen, Liya Kebede, Karen Graham, Paulina Porizkova, Carolyn Murphy, to name just a few, they go with Kendall Jenner.
I am a die hard Lauder fan, and I have significantly slowed my business with them.

What if they were eating at a Brazilian restaurant or were joined by fellow Brazilians. It’s not impossible.
IF that is what they said well they’re not wrong. I like Gigi Hadid, I think she’s gorgeous & usually I like her photoshoots. Do I think it’s fair the way she became a model? Not at all, but the girl has it. She looks great in the runway & can do commercial too. Now Kendall is pretty don’t get me wrong but her expression on every photoshoot is the same. Her walk is ok but it’s not something spectacular. The only thing is who she is, a Kardashian & how much Kanye pushed for her to be a model.
So I can see why models who worked so hard can get pissy to see these rich kids want to become models just because they feel like it.
Ive thought that before about Kendall, pretty but boring. Not sexy. I think Gigi is very unique looking and has more of the X factor or whatever it is they’re calling that.
Kendall does have catwalk presence, Gigi cannot walk. Both are quite bland in photos, compared to Coco Rocha, and even Cara. They are models because of their high social media counts.

I agree. Gigi is absolutely stunning but she should stick to editorials because she can’t walk to save her life. Kendall is pretty but there’s nothing striking or unique about her.
How many times and in how many different ways can we say that Kendall is bland or doesn’t have that *it* factor? I think she’s beautiful and looks like a runway model. *shrugs*
That being said, she is no Adriana Lima who I think is one of the most stunning women I’ve ever seen. JMO but I’ve always loved her. I mean, as much as you can “love” a pretty lady who’s paid to be pretty. Still, those eyes!
Kendall does look like a runway model. However there are alot of runway models male and female who are beautiful but don’t have *it*. Kendall doesn’t have *it*.

Maybe the point is that if we didn’t say over and over….and OVER again how “boring, bland, unremarkable, basic, forgettable” etc etc Kendall is, then we wouldn’t really have much to say about her. I still find “boring” preferable over some of the adjectives I’d use to describe her sisters.

I’ve always like models who faces and bodies make the clothes look more interesting! That said I think Gigi has an okay face except for her cheeks but I think Cara is beautiful in print and I think Kendall looks the same no matter what she is trying to sell. The camera likes Kendall but doesn’t love her the way it loves Cara. I think Kendall was born to be a mean girl and probably thinks she is superior to everyone else which she certainly is not. From time to time people get back what they put out in the world and this could be one of those times.

And I don’t think most people will be changing their opinion about her exceptional blandness anytime soon. Gigi’s ok, but she still seems like a VS/Sports Illustrated model to me. Most of the editorials she’s done have sort of catered to that. The few truly high fashion editorials she’s done have not been good. She looked out of place. IMO her sister has a much better look for that kind of thing.

Both Gigi and Knedall are absolutely gorgeous. What are people here smoking if they think they are basic.. Now if they can or cannot walk is something different and obviously they are the products of nepotism. But for a corporation it makes economic sense to hire Gigi Hadid and her 13 million followers than to hire an unknown.
@cornyblue, I think people mean “basic” in terms of modeling. Especially compared to the supermodels of the 90’s like Cindy, Christy, Naomi, Tyra…they just had “it”. Kendall is definitely a very pretty woman, but she doesn’t have that model spark. Her eyes always look so dead and lifeless. I do think Gigi has more model potential than Kendall though. You can at least see signs of life in her face, unlike Kendall.
They are basic for models. Most of the supers of yesteryear didn’t surgery themselves in order to get their career nor did they have connections. They are pretty but not high fashion. Most models with bad walks don’t get hired period, only very compelling models get a pass once or twice and then are told to hire a coach. They just can’t walk and are boring on the runway. Kendall is terrible in print.

Kendall has zero personality and always look dead behind the eyes. Gigi looks different and seems to have a personality. But it’s true what they say, these new crop of trendy models for the most part come from incredibly rich families or movie stars who have connections or are Instagram celebrities.

It depends on where you live. In the fashion capitals like New York or Paris or even LA, no you wouldn’t. There are beautiful models, actresses and dancers or fashion people everywhere.
What part of New York are you talking about? The NYC I know has just a many average looking people as elsewhere in the world. Trendy neighborhoods may have more fashionable young people around, but that’s not really the ideal image I got from your writing. Judging by the street harrassment, even non-models like me get attention too. So I’m not sure of your point…
Funny because I always thought Alessandra was basic as hell. She never stood out for me and I never really paid attention to her. Adriana on the other hand is stunning. I think Gigi and Kendall got where they are more so because of social media and who their parents are, but they are both gorgeous. I don’t find Kendall bland at all. But the two could definitely use more personality and Ms Jay as a runway coach.
Kendall is an unremarkable model but I do think she’s got the look. Gigi is so bland to me. Mall girl hot. Her sister Bella is absolutely stunning, though.

Not true in most cases. Nepotism has been around a long time and it sure does open doors into fashion and Hollywood, but the most famous supermodels of the past reached the top because of hard work, not nepotism. Cindy, Linda, Naomi, Christy, and Kate Moss came from either working class or middle class families. Same with Gisele, Adriana, and Alessandra. And it’s the same story with earlier top models: Twiggy, Veruschka, Jean Shrimpton, Paulina Porizkova, Gia Carangi, Cheryl Tiegs, Brooke Shields, Beverly Johnson, Lauren Hutton, etc. The MAJORITY of the biggest names in modeling had humble beginnings. They weren’t rich girls. So, I don’t blame them if they criticize today’s socialite instagram models, whose connections give them undeserved opportunities over models who actually have more talent and better looks.

Jenner and Hadid got nothing on Adriana and Alessandra, who are absolutely gorgeous. KenDULL and Gigi are very pretty, but they wouldn’t be where they are w/o their name, family, or social media. Fair play to them, though. They hussled and got to where they are and are known in their own right.

Adriana and Alessandra have been friends since before either was very famous. They do speak English together when they’re in a group setting. It’s plausible that if they were at a table with a few people, they would be speaking English. I agree that Kendall and Gigi are the most “famous” models because of the reality tv name recognition. Neither is a stand out and neither would be successful without reality tv. That being said, this is the world we live in. Actresses and reality tv stars cover magazines more often than supermodels. In the end, the brands and advertisers want to reach mass audiences, and who better to deliver than the IG-hustlin reality girls?
The young girls sure are pretty but they got no sex appeal. Gigi has a lot of Fergie going on in her face. She is an attractive woman but she will disappear when you mix her with the Baldwin girls. Kendall is cheerleader pretty. Take away her fame and connections and she’ll be cast in proactive and wet n wild commercials and not estee lauder. Take a look at Marga Esquivel and Fei Fei Sun, two girls that are not considered stunning in real life but in the runway and photoshoots, they transform. Kendall is like playing dress up. She has the same look each time.

I doubt Adriana and Alessandra wasted their time talking about Kendull and Gigi. The last photo says at all. Kendall is no model. In my opinion, Gigi has a chance for longevity in the field.
If you want to see real models, go back to the 90s. Those were supermodels. Nowadays everyone can become a model and is being called a supermodel. Laughable. And who are these Hadids?! I see them everywhere these days. Annoying as hell.

I don’t think this trend will last forever once the novelty wears off. Fashion people tend to flock to the latest thing and then quickly get bored if there is nothing behind it. Once the worm turns they then all decide it was stupid and no one takes responsibility for the trend.

I think Gigi and Kendall are decent editorial models, though Gigi is the more striking of the two. Albeit, I think Kendall is the better runway model.

Lauder is such an $$$ non-trendy brand for people under 30…I don’t think Kendall will lift their sales on a long term basis in any big way despite the PR statements claiming otherwise.
I think the older ones are more interesting because they’re OLDER. They’ve experienced more and it shows in how they carry themselves. Ambrosio reminds me a lot of Stephanie Seymour, and that’s not entirely a good thing. My mom put me in a modeling class wayyyy back in the day in a last ditch effort to make me coordinated (didn’t work) and they even said back then that models should blend in and basically not stand out more than what they’re modeling.
Well I agree with them, today’s new fashion models are horribly bland and not even drop dead gorgeous. They’re just pretty, thin and vapid looking.
Standards of what is considered model worthy has gone down ever since people like Kendell and Gigi came onto the scene. They really brought expectations down tremendously. I can agree that they are very bland and boring to look at. They don’t even have great shining personalities that I can admire. If I wasn’t forced to see their faces on the internet everytime I come on….I’d forget they ever existed.
