Tom Hiddleston looks hot, chiseled & buff in ‘Kong: Skull Island’ first look

FFN_RIJ_NIGHT_MANAGER_040516_52014544

Of all the upcoming films being teased at the MTV Movie Awards this weekend, I kind of think Kong: Skull Island was the most secretive. As in, the cast and crew has been really cryptic about the plot of Skull Island and we didn’t even really know when the film was set, who Tom Hiddleston was playing, all of that. As it turns out, the film is set in the 1970s, post-Vietnam War. Hiddles plays a former or current British SAS guy and he’s with a team of American soldiers investigating this mysterious island. Brie Larson plays a hippie peacenik photojournalist. Oh, Kong is going to LOVE her. Anyway, this “first look” debuted at the MTV Movie Awards, so enjoy.

I chuckled at Tom posing so prettily with that automatic weapon. He’s all “CHISEL. FACE. ARMS. SERIOUS.” Granted, he looks damn good here. He needs to do more movies where he’s just wandering around in a tight t-shirt, looking damp and commanding. I’m also really intrigued by Sam Jackson and John Goodman. I want to know more! Which probably bodes well for the movie, that they’re successfully stoking this interest.

Meanwhile, after the massive success of The Night Manager in the UK, there were a lot of rumors that another mini-series – using the same characters – would or should be made. Hiddles shut it down, saying: “As it stands, Pine exists for six hours in a miniseries. The story feels complete. I only ever conceived of it as an adaptation of a complete novel. We made some alterations, we updated it so it had a political resonance and we changed the ending a little bit. I know the rumours about it extending, but none of that is real.” Sure. But if the money was good enough and the story was good enough, I could see it.

  1. Miss Jupitero says:

So glad he finally has a good stylist. Whoever has picks out his suits really knows what they are doing.

    • lilacflowers says:

      Ilaria Urbinatti.

    • ennuiarethechampions says:

I very much agree, with the exception of the burgundy suit he wore recently. Because channeling Ron Burgundy should never be one’s fashion goal.

      • Cranberry says:

Yea, who let him go out in that? No to maroon suits! For one, it’s not a complimentary color for him. He looks best in gray to blue ranges and also in black.

      • Dara says:

Things were going so well, but the burgundy suit was the start of a serious style slump for me. He, or more accurately, his stylist, is 0-3 in the events of the last few days. I miss the classic banker-Tom look to be honest. And I desperately miss the leather jacket/ t-shirt combo that has always worked so well.

      • Cranberry says:

Me too @Dara. You and I think alike about what we like best to see him in. The perfectly-fitted banker suit and for me the very fitted black leather jacket & white t-shirt.

      • twilly says:

The blue plaid suit, striped shirt, polka dot socks. Please, please, no more. Unflattering!

      • Cranberry says:

Oh @twilly you said it. This is just not a good style for him. It’s not the worst but it’s got some major detractions aka baby-blue dotted socks. This new stylist doesn’t seem to really know what works best on him. He’s not a hipster and doesn’t have a freak flag hidden away in a closet. He is the freak. He doesn’t need to advertise it.

Freak as in freakingly talented or freaking unpredictable. Or freaking cringy, pedantic, puddletom, sex god all at the same freaking time freak.

I really didn’t like those socks.

      • Dara says:

I’m also really starting to dislike the fact the stylist is putting the same things on multiple clients – especially when they are so easy to spot (pardon the pun) – Chris Evans wore the same socks (on the same day), Rami Malek and James van der Beek both wore variations on the burgundy suit.

    • Cranberry says:

I do love some of the material and texture of the new suits, but I’m not as sold on the uber tight cut especially in the pants. It comes off well in some photos, but other times not. I think it’s because Tom’s got a big head, and when his suit is so tight and form fitting it makes his head look a bit too big in proportion to his body. This shows up on some photos depending on the angle height of the camera. That’s my scientifical theory on suit binding and head corking effect.

    • raincoaster says:

I write about suits for a weekly blog and you got that right. I don’t normally love the double pockets, but on someone built like him they are very nice. And that fabric is exceptional.

      • Cranberry says:

Yes I do like that jacket up in the photo. Beautiful fabric, and you’re right, Tom’s build, his height and slender frame allow him to wear highly constructed pieces beautifully.

  2. Browniecakes says:

Looking forward to this one. TNM wait is down to 8 days . TH looks great on and off screen.

  3. Guest says:

Kong? Okay Kong is interesting but what made me freak out way more was his dark red colored suit at the TNM panel…. That was comparable to a miracle. Wow. But I got to admit that I didn’t like the color on him. Still, he has a new stylist and I liked her choices from before.

    • lilacflowers says:

That color actually seemed to wash him out. It might have been better with a dark shirt.

    • muffin says:

When did he wore a red suit? I can’t find the pictures.

    • ennuiarethechampions says:

Ha — I mentioned that suit above before I got to this comment. That suit receives a giant NO from me.

      • lilacflowers says:

I didn’t see any pictures of him standing up in it, just sitting down with Hugh, so I really couldn’t tell how well fitted it was. It could have been spectacular but none of that was visible. The color really did nothing for him with the white shirt. A black or gray shirt may have punched things up a bit but, as much as some others seem to want something else, I think his best color-range really is the blue/green/gray/black we’ve seen so much.

      • ennuiarethechampions says:

True, it could have been well-fitted; I didn’t see pictures of him standing either. The color itself was just off-putting for me. I agree that his go-to blues, grays, etc. are much more flattering to him.

  4. Lama Bean says:

Hiddles looks really good here. And I agree on the suits. They fit him well.

Corey Hawkins is a cutie. (Wait, that is his name right?) That 70s vest is killing me softly.

Was Brie Larson always so endowed? They seem like they don’t match her body otherwise.

    • Algernon says:

She’s always been booby, but she’s tightened up all over and her boobs looks magnificent. I’d like to know her upper body regimen.

    • Cranberry says:

It’s the bra lifting them up and forward. Mine used to do that.

  5. lilacflowers says:

The costume designer responsible for that t-shirt should receive not only the Oscar for costume next year but AMPAS lifetime achievement and humanitarian awards.

And oh, John Goodman and Samuel L. Jackson AND John C. Reilly. It’s the Trifecta of Best Supporting Actors.

And Corey Hawkins. And Jason Mitchell. And John Ortiz. And Thomas Mann (Me, Earl & the Dying Girl – watch it!)

    • M.A.F. says:

Honestly, I had no desire to see this film, another Kong movie? But now that I am aware that Goodman and Reilly are in this along w/Jackson, I’m sold.

      • Poisonous Lookalike says:

My thoughts, exactly, MAF. I could rewind and replay that bit of Tom slinkily walking with the rifle for days…

    • InvaderTak says:

Speaking of Samuel L, everybody needs ton check out his twitter and instagram. He posted some awesome shots of Vietnam while he was filming. Great stuff. Signature bald head on the corners lol

      • lilacflowers says:

I love the way SLJ takes selfies. His pictures were wonderful with fabulous scenery in the background and just his ear or corner of his glasses or his hat – just enough so you know it is him – in the lower corner.

Check out Thomas Mann’s Instagram too. He took some stunningly beautiful photographs in Australia and Vietnam.

    • ennuiarethechampions says:

I know — I got nervous when J.K. Simmons and Michael Keaton dropped out, but then they ended up assembling a truly impressive cast for the film. And they seemed to have so much fun together. I’m looking forward to this film!

    • SusanneToo says:

YES, on Me, Earl, etc.!! One of the best movies I saw last year.
PS-Last week I saw through that godawful The Talk show just to see Tom. He managed to interact with Sharon Osborne, et al, and come out looking good.

      • NUTBALLS says:

I would put Me, Earl & the Dying Girl up there with Spotlight, The Big Short, Star Wars as my favorites of 2015.

      • Lilacflowers says:

I loved that movie so much. That and Dope were two of my favorites. I wanted to see the movies he made with Earl, especially their takes on Herzog’s films and their take on the documentary Burden of Dreams about Herzog making Fitzcaraldo

      • Cranberry says:

I saw it too. It’s on YT. He did really well. It was fun to watch. Way better than truncated The View segment he did during Crimson Peak. They were all informed about all his projects that are out right now and even though they asked the Bond and butt questions, he handled it very well.

      • Cranberry says:

Aisha Tyler rocks. They are lucky they got her for the cool factor, and that Sheryl lady is hilarious. Those two make the show, otherwise all you got is S. Osborne.

    • I Choose Me says:

Hell yeah! I was already on board for this movie but throw in Sam Jackson, Goodman and John C. Reilly and my intrigue meter is going off the charts.

  6. NUTBALLS says:

Ahhh Thomas. Come to my boudoir all damp and commanding in your army greens and put those GUNS and LEGS to good use.

My excitement for this film is growing.

    • Sixer says:

I can’t even begin to imagine myself watching a King Kong film unless forced to by some concession or other to the Sixlets, but LEGS looks nice here.

Just a brief off-topic for you, missy. I finally got around to watching the first episode of Marcella. Noir thing written by the guy who wrote The Bridge, and with an excellent cast of Anna Friel, Sinead Cusack, Nicholas Pinnock and more. Very good. You’ll find it on ITV Hub, but I’m not sure if you have to stream or download.

      • NUTBALLS says:

The first episode is available for streaming… I’ve got a slow day today, so I’ll check it out.

So…I was delighted to find the first couple of episodes of Employable Me on YouTube so I could send to my friend who has an autistic son the same age as mine. The more I watch that show the more I hope that someone here in the States will copy it and put it out there on Primetime TV. I think viewers would eat it up.

And…I had no idea that the British gov’t paid their people to emigrate to Canada during the 1920’s until I watched that 3-part Scottish documentary. I’ve always wondered how so many of the poor and working class Europeans managed to save up enough money to pay for the passage over. I guess that explains it in one instance at least.

      • Sixer says:

We paid passage for people to emigrate to Aus and NZ too, I think. Then, post WWII, begged the Windrush generation to pay their own passage to come here!

      • Anne tommy says:

There an excellent film on the kids sent to Australia from the Uk, Oranges and Sunshine, Emily Watson stars.

A local bookshop has a display of The Night Manager and High Rise books together, with the tag line ” buy one Tom, get the other Tom half price” ? If only it were so easy.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Sixer, here’s a feel good story for you to enjoy from this weekend’s Boston Globe.

        http://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2016/04/09/janitor-see-fifth-child-graduate-from-college/1XX0fLRZgXCZCgoMC2usQN/story.html?event=event25%3Fevent%3Devent25

Now I know how to send my kids to college without burying them under student loans.

      • Sixer says:

Oh awww. What a guy! What a dad.

  7. Jh says:

Hot??? I always feel like I’m in some sort of opposites day dimension with these posts.

    • Boston Green Eyes says:

I agree. I only come on to Hiddles threads to see my favorite posters: Lilac, Nutballs and Sixer should be appearing shortly!

      • Emmet says:

        agree about Lilac +1000

BTW – Daily Fail comments – don’t like Hiddles – surprised by that
one said he’s so upper class his trousers press themselves when he puts them on
had to share – too funny

      • Boston Green Eyes says:

@Emmet, I just read on Daily Fail that the readers prefer James Norton as Bond rather than Hiddles because Hiddles isn’t masculine enough! Fine by me – James is my internet boyfriend!

      • Sixer says:

Boston – I’m spending today pretending that Kate Chutney did a good visit and didn’t flash all of India while standing at a solemn memorial.

        Emmet/Boston: the word is effete!

      • NUTBALLS says:

God bless Katy Flash-A-Panty for inspiring the most humorous comment section of the day.

Note the “u”. I’m on the clock, Sixer and have already downed a PB dipped Penguin this morning.

      • Sixer says:

        I love your U. It’s a modern day version of U and non-U!

      • NUTBALLS says:

Thank God for wikipedia… you had me lost for a minute, y’know being ignorant of UK class commentary and all.

Looking at the list of words, it appears I’m a healthy mix of both U and non-U. Does that mean I’m more classy than I thought? Bear in mind, I only shower after I run or every two days if not. And I’m known for drinking milk straight from the jug, to save a glass washing. I call both ECONOMIZING.

      • Sixer says:

LEGS has supper, dontchaknow. I have dinner so I’m classless (in every sense of the word). True plebs have tea, which is not a beverage.

        ECONOMISING.

      • Lilacflowers says:

I go out to dinner but have supper at home, never the other way round unless guests come over. Tea the Meal is served at fancy hotels and involves scones and cream and lemon curd. Tea the stuff for making a beverage was thrown into the harbour, which had a “u” at the time but is now “u”-less.

@Sixer, Patriots Day is next Monday.

      • Sixer says:

You only have supper because you’re hoping to invite LEGS round and he doesn’t know what *that* sort of tea is. Admit it.

Tea is mid-afternoon cakes if you are posh and main meal of the day if you are pleb. Dinner is what you have if you are neither.

OOH! I wish to observe this. What is the best website to look at?

      • NUTBALLS says:

The only thing to observe on Patriots Day is the Boston Marathon.

I make tea at home and pay $40 for tea at a swanky hotel or tea room. Whether or not you say supper/dinner or sofa/couch depends on your geographical location here in the US. Alaskans say dinner and couch — totally non-U.

      • Sixer says:

        I have a sofa.

But I need to know about all your celebratory days! I love all that.

      • Lilacflowers says:

The Marathon isn’t the only thing. There are ride reenactments (the British are coming!) and battle reenactments. Without anyone actually succumbing to sniper fire, of course . Bostonglobe.com, Boston.com, and Bostonchannel.com usually cover the main events. There actually is a memorial service the night before for those who perished in the battle and now there is a memorial service the day before for the marathon bombing victims too.

The Marathon (The Kenyans are running!) does take over late morning/afternoon.

We even have a special beer for the weekend and it connects the 2 events. When the Regulars marched on Concord, they were looking for Sam Adams, a tavern owner and an original Tea Partyer. Sam Adams Brewery, named for him, sells a beer only on Patriots Day weekend named Boston 26.2, which is the length of the race.

      • TotallyBiased says:

Breakfast, lunch, dinner. Sunday Supper. Couch.
Though I give the cats their tea at about mid-afternoon every day.

      • Sixer says:

Remind me on Monday, Lilac! Don’t forget.

I have a bicentennial silver dollar that my aunt sent for me when I was but a babe in arms. My possession of it caused great sibling resentment because my brother wasn’t born in 1976, so she didn’t send him one.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Pfft. I ignore all reenactments (Revolutionary or Civil War) unless my kids are doing one for school. Patriots Day is all about a paid day off, marathon and beer.

  8. NUTBALLS says:

Please tell me that Brie’s character will amount to being more than Conrad’s token love interest. I want her character to make sense and not feel thrown in there. She’s looking so strong and fit, I was hoping to see some gun-toting athleticism from the clips.

    • MexicanMonkey says:

I have high hopes for her character, mostly because I don’t think she would have taken the role if she was just a token love interest. I don’t remember her doing much of that trope before she got all the attention from Room so I don’t see why she would after.

      • KTE says:

When she did the Happy Sad Confused podcast she talked at length about how carefully she picks her roles, including Skull Island, so I don’t think she can be just a love interest.

Note the Heart of Darkness nod – Captain Conrad.

    • ennuiarethechampions says:

I hope so too, @nutballs; it would be such a waste otherwise. Room is the only thing I’ve seen her in, but damn, was she amazing in that.

  9. ennuiarethechampions says:

I would watch an infinite number of “damp and commanding” TH movies.

Also, please supply your own double entendre using the word “damp.” I would, but it’s Monday morning and I’m tired.

  10. MexicanMonkey says:

Tom does look fantastic. I wish more actors would go for a lean muscular look rather than the extremely buff looks they’re all going for now. I much prefer hiddles or even Ryan Reynolds look in Deadpool to Cavill and Hemsworth.

  11. ennuiarethechampions says:

Off-topic, but when did CB start using auto-play videos? And can you guys suppress the sound on those? Some of us are trying to pretend to work over here!

    • spidey says:

Suppress the sound on your computer to be on the safe side!

      • ennuiarethechampions says:

Thanks @spiday; I know I need to do that but I keep forgetting before coming back here, with the result that I have had Brie’s voice blaring “Hey MTV!” from my work computer an uncomfortable number of times. 🙂

  12. KTE says:

The talk he did for SAG-AFTRA is up on YouTube. A nice long actorly chat, lots about process and auditions etc. I’ll put the link in a separate post in case it doesn’t post.

    • Gingerly says:

That was a really good talk. He seemed to be terribly tired, but ended up doing exra 15 minutes. I loved when he talked about Hugh Laurie.

    • KTE says:

Yup, the link failed to post.

    • Cranberry says:

SAG AFTRA was a great interview. He was relaxed and joked around and I think gave some of the best insights to the production of TNM like how being executive producer along with Laurie made for a lot of extra responsibility and work on his part. How he would have to attend and contribute at script meetings and be a part of the decision making. He talked about the fast pace and sheer quantity of material they cover everyday of the production.

Oh and did I mention it was funny? The interviewer was very good, and she was just delightful. She has an exuberant personality and was able to really have fun with Tom. She is totally game like Tom and knew how to ask things of him that worked like their reenactment of the Crimson Peak scene.

      • Dara says:

She was wonderful – my favorite interviewer/moderator so far. There is another SAG-AFTRA event in NY this week, I wonder who the moderator will be.

  13. Allegra says:

Here is the link to Times Talks.
    Today at 7 – 8:15 PM ET:
    timestalks.com/detail-event.php?event=hugh_laurie_and_tom_hiddleston

    • MI6 says:

      I’m going. Questions, ladies?
Nothing involving bums or Bond, please.

      • spidey says:

        Any upcoming projects?

      • jammypants says:

Which role did he get rejected from and still wished he got?

      • NUTBALLS says:

Did Tom and Hugh do any jamming together during the four months they worked together? If so, what songs did they jam to?

      • Cranberry says:

Hypothetically: Would he ever consider playing Hank Williams as explored and presented in “I Saw The Light” as a limited premium channel series, something possibly longer than six episodes? For example the BBC’s “Mr. Selfridge”, a dramatic account of a historical person drawn out over four seasons – but not that long. Think 8 – 12 episodes like season one of “True Detective” with Matthew McConaughey and Wood Harrelson.

Or any kind of meaty role who’s life is intimately explored with the nuance and quality of ISTL (since he’s already done HW)?

(I ask this regarding ISTL because I can totally see Tom and Marc Abrahams vision of HW’s story thoroughly explored as a limited series on a premium channel or even AMC)

      • Anne tommy says:

Spoilsport – I was going to suggest “do you have the right bum to play Bond?”. Damn it….

      • browniecakes says:

Nutballs – Hugh Laurie’s music label is Warner Brothers. Wonder if he and you know who ever passed in the WB halls.

    • MI6 says:

@Nutballs, Cranberry, Jammy* and Spidey: these are all great questions! I will take them with me, pick one and report back (if I get the opportunity, of course).
*I love this question. I wonder if he’d answer it.
I was thinking of asking if he’d ever turn(ed) down a role for other than scheduling reasons and if so, why. He doesn’t seem to say no much.

      • KTE says:

He alluded to this in the SAG-AFTRA talk, but didn’t name the film – yes, he turned down the Mark Strong part in Grimsby, according to the Sony emails leak. I think he dodged a bullet there.

      • Cranberry says:

I wondered which movie out right now he was referring to. Don’t know if it’s any good or not, but I’m glad he didn’t take that role. Marc Strong is more established as a tough guy and is a better pairing with SB Cohen. Six episodes, equal to three movies, of TNM is attempting to do this for Tom now. We’ll see.

I prefer him in more emotionally and intellectually complex roles, but I think eventually he’ll be good in comedy, but not right now. He needs to stick with the serious roles at least ’til he’s done with Marvel.

      • MI6 says:

        …there isn’t a single guy on this line. There’s definitely a demographic.

      • Allegra says:

Well, there are to movies that will hit the theaters this year, one is Ben-Hur and the other one is Me before you.
So my guess is Ben Hur.

      • Cranberry says:

Oh, I forgot about Ben-Hur. I guess he must have auditioned for it or at least been in talks because they seemed very determined to get him for the part.

      • MI6 says:

@ Allegra: you’re right. It was Ben Hur. Talk about dodging a bullet

      • MI6 says:

        OK. I’m back.
I will preface this by saying these are my impressions ONLY. The whole thing is probably already up online somewhere, so I’m sure you’ll all form your own opinions.
        Here goes:
TH seemed subdued and perhaps a bit uncomfortable because of the screaming he was greeted with as soon as he stepped on stage. He even referred to “a screaming match” as he took his seat. It was cringe-worthy, and he had a visceral adverse reaction to it. I don’t blame him one bit. You’d think a Times Talk audience would’ve been better behaved.
There were groupies. I had a hard time believing this, but it’s true. Replete with costumes (cat ears?! does that mean something??) and a full-on dominatrix outfit in the second and third rows respectively. I wish I were making this up, but I’m not. The Tumblr fandom was duly represented.
TH was as thoughtful, introspective, analytical and cerebral as ever – just a bit reserved. He doesn’t miss a thing – he sized up that audience in about 30 seconds like he was performing mental surgery. Watching him do that was very interesting.
He quoted from Othello at one point and there was a loud, audible sigh. (It WAS pretty impressive).
The Times moderator brought up Bond to a chorus of loud “no’s” from the audience. He couldn’t come up with anything better?
He ended up asking my question about criteria for turning down a role (which I forgot to put my name on). TH responded that “you have to live in that place for a long time,” so you have to be able to see yourself in it. It was a good answer. Suffice it to say that my impressions of him remain intact.
Hugh Laurie is amazing – sharp wit, self-deprecating, dry humor. A wonderful foil for the more serious Mr. Hiddleston. I want to hang out with HL and his band and play beach volleyball. Badly.

      • Gingerly says:

@ MI6. Thank you for your detailed report. They were great together. I felt rather grateful to HL when he mocked journalists’ pathetic efforts to write another Bond article.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Thanks MI6. I saw that the whole thing was up on YouTube within an hour or two. I’ve only watched the part about Bond, but Hugh was wonderful in how he mocked the rumor.

      • KTE says:

I just don’t understand the ‘look at me!! I dressed up!’ people. It’s ok if you’re less than 12 years old or at a comic-con, but at a Times Talk, why would you do that?! Do people really enjoy looking like a complete idiot in public?

      • Dara says:

@MI6 – hooray for you! It was great watching Tom & Hugh together. @Nutty, do make the time to watch the whole thing, it was one of the best moments during this round of promotion – 2nd only to the SAG-AFTRA event last week. “Here, put your teeth in this” had me laughing out loud.

@KTE, I will never understand the ‘look at me’ impulse some people have. I’m all for people proudly waving their freak-flag – but they need to pick their moment or they do just look like idiots. Not to mention shockingly disrespectful to the intention of the evening. If these events devolve into wacky fan moments, how long will it be before Tom and/or Hugh decide it’s just not worth it and stop doing them altogether?

      • MI6 says:

@Nutballs and Gingerly: the line of questioning was kind of banal given the TT reputation. Or maybe my expectations were just too high.
@KTE and Dara: it was baffling at best and disturbing at worst. I’ve seen that kind of thing at concerts but didn’t expect it at an event like this. The dominatrix thing was just so obvious and over the top, she looked like she just crawled out of a sex den. I got second hand embarrassment for her. I was actually glad TH had company because as any guy might get a kick out of the attention for a minute, it is clearly the seedy downside of fame. That kind of stalkerish sh*t is probably downright scary and not why anyone serions about their work got into it in the first place.
I didn’t stick around to see what happened at the stage door, but someone on Insta apologized for the “wild” behavior of last night’s crowd. Yuck.

      • MI6 says:

I have one last observation and then I really have to study for my midterm:
TH appears to be a sensitive, wildly intelligent, thoughtful, (slightly) insecure almost introverted person, which is a fascinating dichotomy to the actor’s persona. There is an inherent sweetness and vulnerability about him that now seems to be cloaked in a defensiveness that is probably (and appropriately) self-protective as he experiences the consequences of his growing fame and all that brings with it.
Enough armchair psychology for one day. I’m out. It’s been a pleasure visiting with you all. 😉

      • NUTBALLS says:

        Happy mid-term prepping, MI6!

Dara, I had it on while I was working… apparently, I missed whatever it was you mentioned. Where in the timing of the video is it?

I adored Hugh. He was a lovely, comedic counterpoint to Tom’s seriousness.

      • Dara says:

@nutty, I can’t get the video to load on my work computer, but I’m thinking it was near-ish the end maybe (before the audience questions). Could be wrong about that, I caught the last half of it live then went back to watch from the beginning so it’s a little jumbled in my brain. At some point the moderator asks Hugh about being too old for Pine and hilarity ensues.

The two of them together are a lethal combination of brains, charm and humor. I desperately want to be an invisible guest the next time they have dinner together.

      • Cranberry says:

        @MI6

Thank you so much for all your on the ground reporting. I like you armchair psychoanalysis. I can see that in him.

Also when you’re done with your midterm you might want to watch the video footage. There were several times the camera fanned out on the audience. The lighting was very good and the camera was so close that you could distinctively see everybody in the middle section. See if you can find yourself in the audience and if you can see the dominatrix or anyone else you might want to point out. lol

      • Cranberry says:

“The line of questioning was kind of banal given the TT reputation. Or maybe my expectations were just too high.”

        @MI6

The interviewer seemed very green and didn’t seem to possess any natural ability. I’m sure the dominatrix and salivating fangirls didn’t help either.

      • Cranberry says:

        @Nutballs

The Daily Fail headline after Times Talks:

“Hugh Laurie outraged at fans and media for failing to recognize Hiddleston’s potential as next Bond. Threatens to retire to assisted living home for feeble minded thespians if exhaustive campaign is not launched soon.”

    • icerose says:

The Times Talk interview was one of the best I have seen. I just love it when they discuss the process of acting and production developments and their different styles of discussion
I would really like to know what film he turned down and pleased the offers are coming in.

  14. InvaderTak says:

Sorta off topic but related- has anyone seen on tumblr where cumber fans are somehow blaming TH for being a bad influence on BC after some radio talk show host told a story about BC being a jerk to her husband (who apparently worked at a restaurant)? Are the cumber loonies just throwing anything at the wall now? I’ve never heard anything like that about TH. But that said, I’m sure the tumblr “sources” will come out of the wood work with stories. This guy poses with the chef while he’s on vacation and plays laser tag with crew members. What dimension do the cumber loonies live in?

    • KTE says:

They’re loonies, you really can’t expect sense out of them.

    • Lilacflowers says:

And this is why I avoid Tumblr like the plague. But sure, why not? because Tom is notorious for being rude to everyone and bouncing Benny is naive and impressionable and Tom controls Benny like a puppet, even when he isn’t on the scene. Why, Tom made Benny photobomb U2 and rudely interrupt Alan Leech in an interview and make that awful face when Redmayne won the Golden Globe and agree to star in The Fifth Estate and, of course, forced him to marry Sophie

    • jammypants says:

Well it’s been known some (not all) can’t stand Tom, so not surprised if he gets blamed for everything 😛

    • Becky says:

@Invadertak, I follow Tom-related blogs on tumblr and one in particular hates Cumberbatch with a vengeance, and will find any excuse to post bitchy comments about him. It works both ways.

      • InvaderTak says:

No doubt. It just all never ceases to amaze me. Iowa’s just trying to read some Dr strange news.

    • Kelly says:

What I got was it was an actual Hiddles fan who was worried about BC’s bad influence weirdness because of some old gossip, but that blog’s mod is a mess so it all got turned into nonsense fast.

TL DR both Cumby’s and Hiddles’ fandoms are garbage on Tumblr, seriously.

      • InvaderTak says:

I didn’t read any of what actually happened on Tumblr (I’m not on it or any social media), I came across it in a thread about Dr. Strange on another site and then got curious/wanted to gossip about it so came here. But I have no idea what you’re referring to. The blog or the gossip; are you saying that the radio host’s story is old gossip? And yeah, all “fandoms” like that tend to be weird.

      • Kelly says:

Yeah, old, sorry about the confusion there! Supposedly two years ago, the host’s husband had a run-in at an LA hotel with Alice Eve, who called BC for help for some unknown reason and then he had a run in with BC.

Beyond that I couldn’t tell you what happened because honestly the story was secondhand, missing pieces and didn’t quite make sense to me.

And those fandoms are a horror show!

      • lilacflowers says:

Alice Eve? Isn’t she from a family of notorious snobs and difficult people?

    • icerose says:

Quite impressed that Cumberbatch is putting his money where his mouth is by using his company to make a film to support his politics. The idea that His fans are blaming Tom for his supposed rudeness is hilarious.

  15. Camille says:

His face is so unattractive to me. I’ll never get his appeal, just like I don’t get that Cumberbatch person. These 2 people in my opinion are not universal ‘leading men’ material, they have a niche appeal that only attracts certain fans.

    • Kate says:

      MOAR 4 ME.

    • Cranberry says:

What have you seen them in?

    • Bay says:

Uuuh, le “certain fans”… I feel le special, now. ^.^

    • Cranberry says:

“Universal leading man” to me = Safe and just hunky/heart throb-y enough to be “marketable”. Like Brad Pitt or CHemsworth, even Tom Hardy and Christian Bale who are versatile and can do dark and complex roles, but still fall into the physical type cast of hunky/sexy so therefore leading man material. Whereas Daniel Day Lewis, Johnny Depp and Eddie Redmayne are not “universal leading men” as you put it and are exceptionally talented and highly successful as leading men.

To me the idea of universal leading man is a banal cinematic trope that’s over glorified and pedaled for it’s “everyman-hero” appeal at the box office. I like all the actors I’ve mentioned but the Universal Leading Man stereotype is so ubiquitous in cinema that it’s exciting to find talented, charismatic actors like BC and TH that have atypical and even unique leading man appeal.

    • Xxx says:

To all who don’t get the appeal: Hiddleston is not the typical attractive and beautiful man like for example Brad Pitt but here is the thing: you will get the appeal when you see him in motion, when he talks and when he laughs. When he is using his charming behavior to turn you into a giggling girl whenever you interview him. Hiddleston is very smart and to many of us the brain is far more important than a guy who seems to be dull and stupid but is very attractive. Plus there is no one who can wear a suit like him. Honestly. If you want to get the appeal start watching meaningful interviews of him. And watch the Hollow Crown or him on stage while performing Shakespeare. THEN you will understand the appeal. Happened to me. And I never got the fuss either.

    • Sixer says:

I am a certain type of fan. I like legs so I like LEGS for his legs. Most of the rest of him leaves me more frozen than cold. But this is ok because legs. Completely happy to admit this is a niche even in the weird and wonderful (and fact-contorting) world of fandoms. In fact, it may apply only to me. I am not *just* a certain type: I am UNIQUE. Yay me!

  16. NUTBALLS says:

What the hell suit is Thomas wearing tonight???? He’s going down the Redmayne trail and he needs to turn back!

    • KTE says:

This is the danger with a stylist!

(Though I don’t mind it or the burgundy suit, to be honest. Makes a change and at least we know he’ll probably only wear these once or twice – they won’t be on permanent rotation like his old capsule wardrobe was.)

    • Xxx says:

      Did I miss something? Oops.

    • spidey says:

I looked, and looked again, then decided he must have warn that outfit for a bet!

But there is a picture out there where Chris Evans is also wearing those hideous spotty socks. So it could have been for a bet.

      • KTE says:

I like the bet idea! I was wondering whether those socks might have been wrap gifts from the same person with hideous taste.

      • Lilacflowers says:

        Loki is Team Capt

      • Allegra says:

        @spidey :

Unfortunately it was not a bet. Chris Evans, Bradley Cooper, Tom and many more
share the same celeb stylist, Ilaria Urbinati. I saw on her instagram that she put Armie Hammer in a red suit. Can you believe that?ilariaurbinati.net/men#/id/i5989010
And I think she got so many complaints about what Tom was wearing yesterday
that she took his pic out.

    • Gingerly says:

Don’t worry too much, ladies. He will be back to the old blue and white, and grey shirts as soon as this crazy promotion tour ends. Maybe he can keep three or four socks with or without dots.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

I think he hired a stylist because left to his own devices, he makes terrible choices. I don;t think he actually has much style.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Based solely on my T ride this morning and what I’m seeing parading past me here at a courthouse, few men do.

      • Cranberry says:

        Miss Jup,
What are you saying? You’re speaking in foreign tongues. I can not comprehend what the f*ck you are saying – It makes no sense! I think you’ve been possessed and are in need of an exorcism.

      • Cranberry says:

        @Lilac

Is Colin or Mark capable of performing an exorcism?

    • twilly says:

Please get rid of those pale blue socks! IMO this over-hip look is not for him. He wears a classic wardrobe like no one else, don’t spoil it.

      • Cranberry says:

Absolutely! His former style was perfect. It was sharp and hip because it had taste and because he knows how to wear and move in fitted construction classic or otherwise.

      • Dara says:

The suit in the photos for this article is amazing, and the stuff he wore for the ISTL promo was great – still classic but with some subtle updates in color and pattern – more modern, yet it still looked like Tom. The latest looks have swung too far into trendy/edgy territory. Maybe the stylist thought she could get away with more since the audience for The Night Manager might respond to “fashion forward” choices?

Trouble is, I don’t think of Tom as fashion-forward, and he’s coming off a little try-hard. The change-up has gotten him some notice in the fashion press though, so the new stuff may be here to stay (sadly for those of us that liked the classic Tom).

      • Cranberry says:

“The latest looks have swung too far into trendy/edgy territory” . . . . . “may be here to stay (sadly for those of us that liked the classic Tom).”

Oh Dara say it ain’t so. I cry for my poor Tom and for myself. I now live in fear that I might see those dreadful socks again.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Socks are like bathrooms, that’s the place to experiment with color and texture, so it doesn’t work, it doesn’t impact the overall look and feel of the home/ensemble.

twilly, from your lips to God’s ears. Hip and trendy doesn’t work on the PuddleTom.

    • Bay says:

I don’t much care for the suit’s pattern, but I liked the socks.

      • EnnuiAreTheChampions says:

I like the socks too! I would have enjoyed them as a pop of color with a more subdued suit.

    • Cranberry says:

Turn back and run! Or just strip everything off and stand before me in all your naked Hiddle glory.

Hmm. There might be an upside to this new stylist after all.

  17. lilacflowers says:

In slightly related/unrelated news, Tessa Thompson is joining the cast of Thor3 and Natalie Portman is not.

    • NUTBALLS says:

I liked her in Creed. Nice to see more color. Will she be Thor’s love interest then?

Loki needs a bad girl to get it on with for round 3, I think.

      • Lilacflowers says:

I’ve seen nothing more than the notice she was cast and Natalie isn’t coming back (so Darcy gone too?) The notice said nothing about her role. It didn’t indicate whether they released Natalie from her contract either

    • koko says:

      No Jane, no Darcy.
      Priceless.

    • EnnuiAreTheChampions says:

      Wow, she is stunning.

      • Allegra says:

        Yes, she is.
But I only know her from Veronica Mars.

      • ennuiarethechampions says:

I haven’t seen her in anything yet. But I’ll bet she and Hemsworth will look blindingly beautiful together.

      • NUTBALLS says:

She may be Thor’s love interest, but I’d be happier if she & Tom get something going this summer. I want to see the pasty-white god holding some lovely, delicious chocolate.

    Wahey, an open thread! 😉
So much stuff popping up because of Night Manager starting tonight.
Interesting new review of IStL, man on Twitter goes to pieces when Tom shows up at his gym and asks him where the jump ropes are (his trainer has to answer), Anna Wintour singing Tom’s praises at a super-chic cocktail party. Tom replies the Democratic primaries are far more important than the first episode of Night Manager.
