Here are some photos from last night’s LA premiere of Mother’s Day, the latest Garry Marshall-directed holiday monstrosity. In this post, we are going to be discussing Business Shorts/Cocktail Shorts and whether they are ever a good idea. First, let me say – I don’t think Jennifer Aniston and Julia Roberts meant to both do Business Shorts for the premiere. Meaning, I think if Jennifer knew that Julia was going to do shorts, Jen probably would have gone with a cocktail dress. The fact that they both did Business/Cocktail shorts is amusing to me. Also amusing? Julia and Jennifer didn’t pose together on the red carpet at all. That just shows you Julia’s Alpha-Dog tendencies, just my opinion.
We’ll start with Jennifer Aniston, who wore this sort of deconstructed Armani suit which, yes, involves shorts. At first, I just saw the top half and I didn’t care for it, but the whole look is much better. The cut-off on the jacket/shorts is very flattering to her figure and her body looks great. I think her face looks less filler’d and Botoxed too. Now if we could just stop with the hair-in-the-face styling.
As for Julia, she wore this shorts-suit from Rag and Bone. While Julia looks nice, I feel like this is millionth time she’s tries to make Business Shorts a thing. And I’m just not feeling it. I get that she has crazy-long legs and she wants to show them off. But why not just do a short cocktail dress? I don’t know, I just feel like this wasn’t her best choice out of all the available options.
Additional photos… here’s Jack Whitehall. He’s a British comedian and I mostly know him from his appearances on Graham Norton’s show.
And finally, here’s Tracy Anderson, looking like she pulled her hair back to wash her face and somehow just ended up on this red carpet.

Jennifer
I agree…not that I am a fan of the business shorts look, but Aniston does look better. (to be fair, I do hate white suits.)
and Aniston’s legs look amazing. and not that Roberts’ are BAD by any means, but I think hers aren’t as toned as Aniston’s.
Jen looks amazing.
Jen looks great. The fit and tailoring of the jacket are flattering.
Julia is a mess from her hair to her shoes.
Completely. And her cute outfit shows off her amazing legs.
Aniston looks really sexy, I have to say.
Not a huge fan of the shorts suit but she pulled it off.
Before I even had a chance to see the pics, I knew it would be Jen. She’s always had good legs and this kind of piece is within her dressing style. With Julia, she’s never had good taste in clothing, or style for that matter, and this just doesn’t suit her at all.
As much as it kills me to say it, Jennifer rocked it. Julia’s outfit looks a bit off, it doesn’t flatter her shape.
Yeah, I’m not generally a fan of her fashion but here she looks pretty sharp.
Jennifer from the neck down (as in outfit is better, more of a tuxedo – red carpet suited, than just a plain white suit like Julia’s).
Julia from the neck up..for obvious reasons. She’s a beautiful lady, especially when she’s not doing her horse laugh/smile thing showing every tooth in her head.
They probably didn’t pose together or fraternize because JR is embarrassed she’s in this shite. She kept it low key. Movie looks terrible. Very dated I agree. I thought these celebrity ensemble rom coms had died out. Couldn’t pay me to see this.
Jen of course. Julia’s legs are too skinny; Jen’s are toned and tanned and fabulous.
Not to be argumentative, but I see very little difference in their legs.
I agree with GNAT. Both have pretty impressive gams imo.
I don’t know if their legs are that different but Jen looks stylish and glam while Julia looks kinda frumpy to me, with bad hair. And Tracey looks ridiculous from head to toe.
I agree. Their legs are similar, but Julia’s just look skinny while Jen’s look toned. I dig Jen’s outfit.
I’m with Jemmens. JA has very toned, well-defined legs. Julia’s legs look sticks and not because they’re too skinny. She just doesn’t have any definition or muscle tone. She keeps wearing suit jackets because she has a thick waste and doesn’t do anything about it. That white suit is all kinds of wrong – ill-fitting, unflattering, plain, wrong cut for her body type, and white is not the color for this suit or her – I know white is not really a color but you know what I mean. And her hair? What is that? That’s how I do my hair accidentally when I’m getting ready to clean the toilet.
I think those types of outfits look better in a dark color, so I’ll give it to Jen.
Ugh, Tracey. I find her super annoying.
Yeah, I think it’s the white that throws off Julia’s suit. The top part looks like something Ellen might wear.
I think Jennifer chose the better shorts suit here. Julia’s looked off somehow. It’s like she took a suit jacket from her closet and paired it with shorts, as opposed to it being a thought through outfit – if that makes any sense.
Julia’s hair looks sloppy, jacket ill fitting. color bad. Jen looks amazing
Short suits don’t make any sense to me. I can’t think of any occasion where I would wear one. Neither.
Yikes, Tracey. Giving up so soon?
What if you were anchoring the news and it was hot?
You mean like a newscaster or weather person? They could wear one. I meant me, in my real life, though.
no pants.
Exactly what I was thinking, it what situation would you wear business shorts?? That said, I love Julia’s suit and she looks really young here. I think the issue is her legs are so skinny and it makes the jacket look boxy- it needs to be more fitted. Jennifer always looks great. I think we’ve seen this look before on both of them.
I have to admit, I had a shorts suit in the 90s. It was linen and from the Gap. I didn’t feel like I could wear shorts for an occasion where an actual business suit was required so I wore it for more casual work days. It was really kinda practical for summer — the shorts felt summery and seasonally appropriate and the jacket kept me somewhat warm in the ice cold AC inside. 🙂
That sounds cute. I should have said I don’t have many occasions where I wear a suit at all. Maybe to a funeral or a committee meeting. It would make sense in the summer for casual day.
I like them coming back. Not for business but like you said. The right cut with the right shoes, it can be cute. Soarise Ronan wore a cute suit this past awards season.
I could see maybe a fitted jacket with shorter sleeves over longer, fuller shorts…maybe. it just seems like an internal contradiction.
No they do not make sense. There really is no such thing as a business shorts suit – it’s a contradiction in terms. I know of no business that requires suits but allows shorts. Business casual does not allow for shorts. It may be a fashion design and it may be some kind of suit, but it is not a business suit in any way shape or form.
Me! – I wear short suits to work! *unabashedly puts hand up*
My company’s dress code is business casual. When I meet with clients I dress professionally, if it’s an office day I dress more on the casual side (today, no meetings, so I’m in a lightweight collared shirt, white linen pants and flats) – and we are trusted to dress appropriately for our scheduled day.
I am also required, on days, to crawl around on construction sites so, my work wardrobe is everything from steel toed boots and jeans to suit jackets, dress pants and everything in between.
To me, a well tailored pair of shorts (obviously I’m not talking sloppy shorts, t-shirt & flip flops here) matched with an appropriate top (blazer, dress shirt or other) is no different to a well tailored skirt.
I will say thou, I work in design… so no one in my company is wearing a three piece suit or tie. I think the industry determines what each dress code covers.
Let the bashing begin! 😉
@layla me, too!
I live in a VERY hot climate and shorts suits are a great way to keep cool, be comfortable and still look professional. Granted, the shorts are a longer length (I couldn’t do the Jen/Julia length to work), but no one has ever looked at me sideways for it. It’s about the same as wearing a skirt suit, but more practical for me.
On a different note, I think I had Tracy Anderson’s dress in the ’90s and I believe I wore it with combat boots.
The real question is who is less grating? Both get on my last nerve.
Haha, yes! If I had to pick an outfit though, JA wins this time.
Two annoying women in an annoying movie. Aniston is the biggest phoney in the world. At least Julia is real in her annoyance. Aniston has a problem forgetting her lies and then just looks dumb.
Agreed. I think in a head to head Julia would win every time. She has never pretended to be warm and cuddly. Anniston’s image is annoying as all get out.
They both look fantastic. But the first photo gives Jen the win in my opinion.
my vote goes to Jen!
the interesting cut of the jacket salvaged it.
Julia’s just remind me of boy’s grammar school formal shorts and jacket in white for some reason. actually, now that i scrolled up again, i think the heels ruined it for me. it would actually be quite cute with some brogues or penny loafers, go full “boy”.
Yes JR looks like a schoolboy. My thought too.
I like JA’s look, a lot. BUT I don’t mind Julia’s attire either, I mean, she doesn’t have the easiest shape to dress, and I can’t imagine her these days with a short cocktail dress. I feel like she’s one of those people who looks crazy good in Pants and shorts (There aren’t the most amazing shorts either), and she knows it and goes with it. Kind of like Sofia Vergara and her millions of versions of the same dress she always wears. It’s OK.
I’ve seen her in casual clothing and she has a high waisted boyish figure with thin legs. Nothing wrong with that but it is a fashion challenge.
Yes exactly. Only now I notice I wrote ” *there* aren’t the most amazing shorts either” when I meant “these”. It is a fashion challenge, and she dresses the best she can, And I think the older one gets, less f*cks are given.
To me, Julia Robert has the body of a woman who has had babies, and doesn’t obsessively work out/watch what she eats. She has a great figure! She doesn’t have a washboard stomach and I think that’s why the suit and the way it’s cut looks a teeny bit weird on her. I think JR goes for jackets a lot (if you look on her red carpet looks) because they minimize her tummy (which is nonexistent except in Hollywood, sigh).
But yeah, I generally dont like short suits and it seems weird to me, like if two men both showed up wearing suits with a vest and an ascot.
That’s the best Jen has looked in ages, kind of going back to the style that works best for her.
Julia, uhm, no. That outfit isn’t working on her.
Tracy Anderson looks broken inside. Is she okay?
Yes, a broken Vanna White.
Aniston–interesting jacket cut…Julia looks like she borrowed a prep school boys’ uniform..and the fit isn’t quite right..
Yikes, I vote for neither. Jen’s is way, way too 80’s and heavy looking. I had something very similar in the 80’s, and it need not come back in fashion!
I feel like JR’s should be cute and work, but it doesn’t. I can’t quite put my finger on it. Maybe a different shirt would have helped? The dress shirt with blazer leads one to expect pants or a skirt, so there is a little cognitive dissonance with the shorts. Maybe a silk tank would have connected better with the shorts. JA’s look is nice, but someone should have helped her roll up her sleeves properly. They’re distracting.
I don’t think it was fitted properly to her shape. Julia Roberts seems to prefer baggier clothes (which I kind of like about her in the sense that she’s considered beautiful without showing off everything), but I think that can throw off an outfit like this.
Jennifer’s suit is the winner, hands down.
The cut and color works.
Julia’s jacket belongs with fitted slacks…
definitely Jen. I like the interesting cut of the jacket and the all black looks more polished.
Julia looks like a cater waiter that’s trying to be different with a white suit with black top instead of the standard.
Julia’s look is the kind of twee outfit I’d expect to see on a male toddler. It could have a more edgy androgynous vibe on someone thinner/less curvy, but on Julia it just doesn’t work. She has such a great shape, I don’t know why she doesn’t wear some more form fitting clothes occasionally. I’m not talking body con, but just something a bit more glam.
I really like the shape of JA’s outfit, and it’s styled well (I always love her jewellery)! The material doesn’t look the greatest quality though.
I feel like we need to pick between bad and worse. They both have bad hair, bad shoes (and shoes can really pick up your game) and bad outfits. However, Aniston’s suit is slightly better because it’s dark and Julia has an overall shitty attitude to go with her style flaws, so she is worst.
And what is the difference between flashing legs in such obvious outfits and what Kim Kardashian does with her breasts and her ass? Not to mention that IMO they don’t have such great legs but that’s a matter of personal taste.
These outfits don’t look vulgar like Kim’s, from what I can tell.
Tracy always looks so… strained. Like she is trying to make her neck look longer. She has a short neck and should just own it.
Jen looks great, Julia looks weird.
She totally does. She reminds me of Star Jones, who always looked like a turtle coming out of its shell.
I really REALLY dislike Julia Roberts so for me she looks like crap all the time. I can’t separate her personality from her physical appearance.
I don’t like either. That look is dated and odd to my eyes.
The only one I can stand in this lineup is Jack Whitehall – who looks fantastic. I love that man mainly based on his Big Fat Quiz appearances.
I actually kind of like Jen’s outfit – Julia’s could be better – the top is too boxy compared to the shorts. Maybe if it had a wider neck or something – I don’t know.
And I’m not even going to start with that bobble head Tracy.
My vote goes to Jen’s outfit. Looks better overall.
There’s a red carpet for this movie? I thought I got an email announcing it had come to Netflix.
Such a late 1980s/early 1990s flashback. However, JR’s looks like she went to a department store and found the top half in the dressy section, and paired casual white shorts with it.
Are they premiering this movie early. so only Aniston and Julia were there. Where are the rest of the cast? Julia hasn’t done any promotion so far. Maybe next week. This just looks like a Lifetime movie to me. It just feels very dated.
Jennifer wins. Julia’s outfit is pretty crappy. Might have been better with a more interesting top and the jacket unbuttoned maybe? Not sure anything can save it really. And I’m a person who appreciates dress shorts! And why is Tracey Anderson there?
Jullia looks so awkward, the suit jacket is too boxy, the shorts don’t drape like they should and her hair is a mess. Fire your stylist Julia. Jennifer’s look is typical Jen. She looks good, her legs look great, but replace it with any photo of her in business shorts and it’s the same thing. Ho-hum.
Came here looking for a picture of Timothy Olyphant. Denied.
He’s in this? That changes everything! The question is can I sit through the rest for whatever time he gets. Hmm. Tough call, tough call.
I know. I will probably wait till it’s on netflix. Fast forward any scenes he is not in.
Amy Poehler. The answer is always Amy Poehler.
Check out Fresh Meat or Bad Teacher. Jack is great in both, though you do need to enjoy that kind of British comedy. We do so we quite enjoyed both shows.
Jenn by leaps and bounds. She looked fantastic.
Jen. Totally slayed with this look.
Meh on JA and JR. But let’s talk about Anderson. I will be notifying the cops cause someone stole my picnic blanket and now I know who it was. What is that pencil troll doing there? Go away.
Julia Roberts got dressesd in the dark. The half pantsuit doesn’t work and she forgot to do her hair.
Yeah, I don’t think I’ve ever seen her hair look so bad. It reminds me of how I look when I roll out of bed some mornings to drive the kids to school. Yikes.
Neither for me. Jen’s outfit would look better with a chignon and fresher makeup. I hate her hairstyle. Julia looks not her best and like she doesn’t care either.
Tracy the poor dear looks like someone who was on her way to pick up some cleaning supplies and accidentally wandered onto the red carpet. Her photo was taken just in case she was somebody.
Jen rocked it. While Julia’s legs are still lovely, she’s getting a bit old for this look.
Er, Julia Roberts if 48, turning 49 this year and Jennifer turned 47 in February…..they’re two years apart. If Julia’s too old to wear shorts and a blazer, so is Jennifer.
To me, julias legs look a million times better than anistons! Anistons legs have more muscels but her skin looks like an old leatherbag and she looks more like a grilled chicken to me. Julia doesnt have the time to train all day like aniston but still has awesome legs even thou shes no more 25 dont forget that! . Julia has a family with three kids.
Julia looks amazing and jennifer looks ok but always the same.
Of course she did not make pics with aniston, Why would she? To give aniston more attention? Also, shes very good friends with brad. And i think julia does not like aniston that much or thinks shes above the whiny aniston pittiy party girl.
I agree, I think Julia’s legs are much more attractive too. But I do like Anistons shoes much better.
Neither
I think short suits work best on shorter petite women. Jen wins for me. Although Julia looks great too I think.
Jennifer looks BORING. I feel like she sported that look a million times before.
Jennifer wins. Julia looks great but sort of half baked, and she’s always so body conscious and neurotic to go that extra bit for a little sexy. Too conservative to really rock it.
Julia.
Jen, by a wide margin. But, oh gods, hear me please, I wish she would cut her hair and stop straightening it so much. She would look phenomenal with a shoulder bob, even a wee bit shorter than that. Pleeeeeease, Jen, cut your hair!
Julias inner ugliness always shines through for me but in this case she looks particularly appalling. From the bad hair to the sickly-looking legs. Ugh.
Don’t like Jennifers outfit either but at least she looks kind of good in it. And I love her healthy-looking, beautifully toned body.
Jennifer looks much better but it is not hard to beat a white suit.
They’re both boring–neither of them dresses outside their comfort zone. They are both equal amounts of “fine.”
