Russell Crowe saved Brad Pitt from multi-million dollar lawsuit

Russell Crowe stood up for Brad Pitt last year, and ended up saving Brad from getting sued and having his professional reputation tarnished. It all started while State of Play was in pre-production. Brad Pitt and Edward Norton were signed on to play the two leads – reuniting them at long last since Fight Club. Unfortunately, the script still needed work (in Brad’s opinion) when the writers’ strike happened.

Instead of going ahead with a film and a script he didn’t like, Brad pulled out, as did Edward Norton. The director and the producers scrambled, and quickly cast Russell Crowe and Ben Affleck. When Russell signed on, he made the producers promise that they would not seek a multi-million dollar lawsuit against Brad for breech of contract. According to sources, Crowe was adamant about this. What’s weird is that Russell and Brad aren’t even friends, and they’ve barely met in passing a few times. The Daily Mail has more:

Russell Crowe saved fellow star actor Brad Pitt from a multi-million dollar legal bloodbath after Angelina’s other half quit the movie State Of Play.

Crowe, not known publicly for such kindnesses, insisted that Pitt not be hit with a lawsuit.

Actors had been hired, sets had been built – but Pitt wasn’t happy with the script for State Of Play. It couldn’t be re-written because Hollywood’s screen writers were then on strike, so the actor fled.

Universal – the studio bankrolling the picture – was outraged, and in no mood to put up with an actor throwing his toys out of the pram because he took exception to a word or two in a script. Universal’s legal people let it be known they were considering suing Pitt.
Meanwhile, desperate to rescue his movie, the film’s director Kevin Macdonald flew to Australia to meet Russell Crowe.

The Oscar-winning actor told Macdonald he’d be happy to be in the movie but was emphatic about one thing: he told the film-maker and other executives that before any negotiations began he wanted an agreement that Universal and Working Title, the London-based powerhouse company producing the film, would not take any legal action against Pitt.

‘Russell’s view was that the film was going ahead anyway and to pursue Brad would have been punitive as he was always going to suffer the professional embarrassment over the way he left,’ a source close to the actor told me.

There seems to have been no particular reason why Crowe should have shown his benevolent side to Pitt. The two actors barely know each other and, what’s more, Pitt was never told about Crowe’s magnanimous gesture.

Even some at the studio weren’t aware of it. ‘He’s such a t****r,’ said one executive. ‘But sometimes he gets it, and can surprise you.’

As we now know, the movie turned out well, and has become the year’s most acclaimed thriller, with Crowe on good form and Helen Mirren clearly enjoying herself as his editor (and sneaking in a few choice British swear words).

As Helen told me (and I apologise for repeating it here, but it is quite funny): ‘Americans think twat is some form of endearment, so I got away with using that and a few others.’

From The Daily Mail

“Pitt was never told about Crowe’s magnanimous gesture.” Well, he is now. I wonder why this information was released now? Now, after State of Play didn’t do that well at the box office? Could it be that Crowe just mentioned it to someone, and they repeated the story? Is it some kind of public relations strategy to make Russell look like a nice guy? In any case, it was a very magnanimous move on Russell’s part. He probably thought of it as just a professional courtesy amongst actors – one that he hopes comes back to him in some way.

hmmm, why would universal sue pitt again, this story sounds like the daily mail pull its arse… how come i haven’t read any this in variety and deadline hollywood… and this isn’t the first time mr. pitt has done this kind of thing, remember the fountain, that one tanked also

  2. Wonder Woman says:

mmm to be in between that hotness

  3. ash says:

don’t worry, Crowe will call upon Brad in the future for a favor… it’s was all planned. heh heh kidding.

    Crowe, lookin’ good.

  4. geronimo says:

Well it makes makes perfect sense to me that Crowe wouldn’t want a lawsuit hanging over a movie he was about to star in. Think of all the distracting media attention it would have resulted in, completely overshadowing the project. No high-profile actor would want something like that casting a shadow. I doubt very much if Pitt himself had anything at all to do with Crowe’s decision – ie. Crowe would have made the same request regardless of who the actor that pulled out was.

  5. bros says:

i dont blame pitt for pulling out of that movie. the script was a piece of shit and crowe did his best with what he had, but it really could have used some rewrites.

  6. Ermaloo2009 says:

Crowe didnt want to be constantly compared to pitt and considered the 2nd choice. Thats why he siad no lawsuit – no press. That way the movie isn’t constantly in the headlines with negatice litigation press all about the movie and who is NOT going to be in it. Itw as completely self serving of crowe and business savvy of him.

  7. truth-SF says:

Ermaloo2009, wow, good point. Now that you’ve mentioned it, it does makes sense. What big actor would want to play second best to an even bigger actor when he’s playing the lead.

  8. Codzilla says:

bros: Shit, really? We were going to see it this weekend. Oh well, we haven’t been able to find a sitter for ages, so I’d go see one of those f*cking spoof movies if it meant a little down time.

Oh, and I heart Russell regardless of his motives.

  9. judy says:

Good for Crowe. People have to stick togeter and he did Pitt a favor by stopping them from suing someone for not wanting to make a piece of shit movie. If you dont like the script how can you do a good job for the movie??

  10. I Choose Me says:

^^Me too Cozilla. Me too. I don’t know what it is about him but he makes my lady parts clench (in a good way);)

  11. Kaiser says:

I love that CB (or Jaybird, I’m not sure) put pics of the two actors – both with their mouths hanging open. With Brad, it’s difficult to find a pic of him with his mouth closed. But Russell? Two peas in an open-mouthed pod.

  12. Celebitchy says:

Thanks Kaiser! It is kind of sexy with both of their mouths hanging open like that.

  13. Carol says:

I love Russell…Ben A not. I felt like something was missing in the movie.

  14. Name says:

I’ve heard Crowe is actually a very generous guy. WHen he’s not being a toolbox, I heard he’s donated a lot of money and has done a lot of charity work, but unlike some people, he doesn’t publicize.

  15. mamafogle says:

Russell Crowe comes across as a pretty down to earth, straight-forward kind of guy. I like the fact that he doesn’t appear to over dramatize things and keeps it simple. it would be nice to see other famous people (John Mayer) take a few lessons in that respect.

And the open fish-mouths thing is funny. Brad Pitt looks like he should be on a hook.

  16. morgs says:

The BBC version was waaaaaaayyy better. I’d suggest renting it. Phenomenal cast! And David Morrissey is understated sexy.

Geronimo, the politician is David Morrissey right? Or am I confused?

  17. lrm says:

I totally agree with one comment,re: crowe did it to avoid media distraction and association of the film with the lawsuit. Talk about detracting from the film itself! so,i am sure he may be generous personally, but i believe this was more about self-preservation.

  18. geronimo says:

Morgs – yes, Morrissy as Collins, with John Simm as McCaffrey. And yes, he’s very sexy and a brilliant actor! And agree, there’s no way the film could ever have matched the BBC series.

  19. Nony says:

Crowe didnt want to be constantly compared to pitt and considered the 2nd choice

Makes perfect sense to me. It would have been bad business as well as just plain annoying – just like you don’t want to hear your partner whine about how their ex dumped them. Hello, you’re with me now!

  20. enchantress says:

Hate to disappoint Ms. Mirren, but I would have to say that most Americans do know what a “tw*t” is – and it’s herself! 😀

  21. K McFarlane says:

Russell Crowe pulled out of an Australian film called Eucalyptus that he was going to shoot with Nicole Kidman only a couple of years ago (she then went on to do Australia instead), because he wasn’t happy with the script. There was talk of a lawsuit but I don’t know if it ever happened. Perhaps that impacted on his attitude.

  22. raven says:

I think it was good business not to draw attention to Pitt’s leaving. But I think it also reflects Pitt’s good judgment. I get tired of reading that Pitt is an airhead and, in light of the so-so reviews this film is getting, i think he was right to get out of it.
