Duchess Kate reveals: George & Charlotte have a pet hamster named Marvin

Here are photos from Duchess Kate’s second event of the day, a lunch fundraiser in support of the Anna Freud Centre, which was held at Spencer House. I would love to know how much time Kate spent at Hampton Court, because it felt like the photos from these two events came right up on each other, as in Kate stopped by Hampton Court, unveiled a plaque and posed with some kids and then she was out of there in 20-30 minutes. If you have Kate’s tick-tock, tell me in the comments!

Anyway, for Kate’s second event of the day, she simply took off her Michael Kors coat to reveal this grey-blue £800 Roksanda dress, which is also a repeat. I remember when she wore this dress in 2012, just ahead of the London Olympics. I really liked it before, and it’s perfectly fine now. It’s just a pleasant sheath dress. She did wear new-ish earrings though: I don’t think we’ve seen these Mapin & Webb Empress earrings before? She’s also trying to grow out her bangs, which is why she pulled back some of her hair. Positive reinforcement: it looks nice, Kate. Try wearing your hair back more often! Also, I’m including at least one interesting photo for those of you on Wiglet Watch.

And here’s the breaking news from today’s first two events: Kate revealed that George and Charlotte have a new pet! Poor Lupo! Now he’s got someone else to worry about. Apparently, Charlotte and George have a new pet hamster named… MARVIN. Which, honestly, is a great hamster name. According to the Daily Mail, Marvin lives at Anmer Hall, not Kensington Palace. The Mail also wrote this: “The existence of Marvin, a royal pet whose role in the Cambridge household has remained undisclosed until now.” #MarvinTruthers are coming!!!

Marvin IS an excellent hamster name. Here’s hoping George doesn’t squeeze him to death.

    • Duchess of Corolla says:

      +1

Hamsters don’t always like to be petted, either…their personalities can be a bit spiky. Might not be the best pet for little George at this point!

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

We had a hamster and everything was fine until I petted him and he bit me. My parents gave him away and I was unpopular.

  2. Jenns says:

I hope they don’t let George hold Marvin…

  3. Astrid says:

Aren’t the kids a bit young for a pet hamster?

  4. Shambles says:

    HONKS FOR MARVIN.

That’s amazing. For the Potterheads, it reminds me of when Ginny Weasley adopts a Pygmy Puff and names him Arnold.

    • Sixer says:

We once had a dog called Ian. My poor mother was stupid enough to let my brother and me name him. He was a terrible one for not coming back until you’d called him at least a dozen times and she had to spend years in the park shouting IAN! IAN! HERE BOY! to the amusement of all the other dog walkers.

      • Katie says:

Some close friends of our family when I was growing up made the same mistake. Their children named the dog Bikini, which rapidly got shortened to Kini the first time she escaped the yard and they had to yell her name all over the neighborhood to get her back.

    • teacakes says:

well, at least it met a better fate than her first Puffskein…

  5. Azurea says:

I’m all for asymmetrics, but that dress just looks like the right sleeve was ripped off in the car door.

  6. Anett says:

Her sad face stayed for an hour, I can’t say anything about the 2nd engagement, that seemed a tiny bit shorter. But help me out if you can.

Her jewellery is also a repeat. I love Roksanda dresses.

There is a pic on KP Twitter account inside about Kate, basically her bum is totally disappeared in this dress. She should start eating, way tooooo slim.

    • Vava says:

I like Roksanda, too, but I prefer her color blocked garments the most. This particular color looks to me as if it is washing her out. And my god, the side view is not good. She has no rear end.

      Makeup is bad, as usual.

      • Anett says:

I agree, her colour blocking clothes are the best. I think this dress likeability depends on how it is photographed. You are right, today not so well. Maybe an updo would have helped.

Her makeup is as hideous as always too. She has learnt nothing from the Vogue people.

    • HH says:

The hair style doesn’t suit the dress. It’s also too fussy/mussed up from the curls and wind. Should have gone for something chic, but still still appropriate for daytime. Keep it simple up top so it doesn’t compete with the fabric layers of the dress.

    • Colleen says:

She is too skinny, I don’t think she will age well. She’s already got that old lady face. She looks better, healthier when she’s pregnant and has more weight on her face.

  7. CidySmiley says:

This looks good on her! I’m not a huge fan of the collar but it looks good on her, the color is good too. Pleasently surprised! Also she can wear a watch, I have a ton of them but I don’t look so great in them, she does tho.

On another note she looks like she’s been losing weight. Her cheeks are more and more prominent. I wonder if she’s doing it on purpose or just dropping some spring/winter weight.

  8. capepopsie says:

I hate asymmetrics, Just can´t see the point.
Always getting the impression something is missing.

  9. OTHER RENEE says:

How long does the queen stay at an event? Just wondering what is expected of the Royals in general at such events.

    • LAK says:

This is an apples and oranges comparison.

The Queen has other official things to do, so her time is limited.

The better comparison is other royals. However, all other royals do on average 3-4 engagements per day. In Anne’s case, she averages 5 engagements a day. They average 1hr per engagement unless it’s a special interest. They have more than 300+ charities to get round every year.

By Comparison, Kate started with 6-7 charities in her 2012 and has grown those to 12 charities in 2016. William has about double that number.

They both started out doing 1hr at each engagement, but 2016 has really been drive-by engagements where they’ve averaged *30mins, even where engagement is reported to be a day long event – see Kate’s blogging day that was really 45mins.

*where they do multiple engagements on the same day, they’ve stayed for 20mins, and where they have been some time, they stayed for 45mins.

It’s easy for people to claim that WK stay at engagements about as long as Philip or Camilla or Sophie or Anne or Charles, but they do not and they only do the one engagement per day as opposed to the multiples everyone else does. Plus, they don’t speak at these engagements, so no prep beyond clothing self presentation required.

Their engagements could be as meaningful as Sophie’s engagements, or even Andrew (yes, surprisingly), but they choose to do the bare minimum in content, time and effort and so the public thinks all royals only do fluff.

  10. Natalie says:

Her face and eyes look so different. I guess she isn’t using fillers anymore?

    • notasugarhere says:

Or the press didn’t photoshop these pictures.

    • Birdix says:

Between the top photo and the third photo she looks like the woman from Seinfeld that Jerry is dating that is beautiful in some lights and frightening in others…

  11. perplexed says:

    Her face looks…idk.

  12. Betti says:

I like the dress – suits her. Thou in the first shot there is something Angelina Jolie looking about her – maybe its the style of the dress and the way her hair is.

In that last photo she looks exactly like her first portrait.

  13. Paula says:

I love everything asymmetric, so I really like this dress. And did she change her hair colour?

  14. Anon says:

I liked this dress much more when she wore it with her hair back. With her hair down it just makes it look messy with all of the draping around the neckline.

  15. Paris says:

    So what?

  16. ClaireB says:

Dear lord, the eyeliner! She must be making up for the lack from the Vogue photoshoot. And it looks like the press are randomly photoshopping. They left all the haggard in on the bottom photo!

    • Poisonous Lookalike says:

Of course she’s making up for the lack at the Vogue photoshoot… she’s solely responsible for keeping the British eyeliner industry afloat. She takes THAT seriously.

      She really is looking rough.

  17. Magnoliarose says:

Better than the usual. Marvin is a cute name. Our pets have people names too. As far as a hamster they aren’t cuddly kid pets.

    The End

  18. imqrious2 says:

The jewelry is the same that she wore for Charlotte’s christening.

    http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-33467384

And I LOVE the name Marvin for a hamster! Adorable 🐹

  19. Shelley says:

When will Marvin begin his public appearances?

  20. Starlight says:

They say photographs make you look fatter how skinny is she, in these pics she looks back to that scary weight just before her wedding

  21. Feeshalori says:

Diana had a pet hamster as a child. I remember a picture of her holding it. So it’s either another case of SWFing or hamsters are popular children’s pets.

  22. Meadow says:

That sun damage is really beginning to show.

    • msthang says:

Meadow, and how, I have worked with sun, alcohol, and ciggy worhippers, in their late 20’s they looked easily 40 something, in their 30’s they looked 50 something, in their 50’s I truly have met younger looking 70 year olds! Your really trash your skin by 20 plus years, all for what to have a good time, even a good face lift doesn’t help!!!

  23. Getting a hampster for 2 young children just shows how brainless someone in that household really is. Hampsters are are never still so a child could actually hold and pet it. When frightened, they bite. And can easily be squeezed to death by an little hand that doesn’t know any better. That poor hampster won’t last long. I feel sorry for it.
Fish might have been a better idea.

    • Tough Cookie says:

I feel the same way. And is it really funny to applaud the thought of a child killing a pet? George just creeps me out.
