Gina Rodriguez shaved the underside of her head for a role: cute?

Gina Rodriguez just shaved the entire bottom part of her head for a role. Gina, 31, used to have hair down to the middle of her back so this is a major change for her. She posted the above Instagram and revealed that it’s for her role in Annihilation, directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, 28 Days Later) and co-starring Oscar Isaac, Natalie Portman and Jennifer Jason Leigh. It’s out next year and must be filming soon. Gina could have faked this with a wig but she went authentic and short.

Before shaving her head, Gina got a bob earlier this week:

Here’s what her hair looked like just a couple of weeks ago. She had very long, healthy looking hair. There may have been extensions in there but her natural hair looks like it goes to at least below her shoulders.

I recently got a longish lob and that’s a major change for me so when I see a celebrity shave their head I cringe for them. As superficial as it sounds, especially considering that women with cancer face this issue, it would be very hard for me to get rid of my hair. When Charlize Theron shaved her head for Mad Max I just felt so bad for her, although after I saw her on screen I marveled at how badass she looked with a buzz cut. That will probably be the case with Gina’s hair too.

Gina works in film and TV, so she’ll be able to get the best extensions available if she needs to go long again, but I have to say I like this style. It’s very 90s and if she ever wants to hide the buzzed part she can just put the top of her hair down. I’m excited to see how she styles it on the red carpet. She needs to share more photos from different angles!

It looks like she has a great attitude about it too.

This is how my hair is cut. It looks great on her.
It is functionally cooler in the humid weather, and I can hide the buzzed part if I want to by wearing it down. It also takes a lot less time to blowdry, which is nice.
Growing it out, however, is going to be a real pain.

I’m dreading growing out my undercut, and it’s only on one side! I love it but some day I may want something different. I’m tempted to go whole hog though. It’s hot hot hot in the summer here and long hair plus sun hats isn’t very pretty at the end of the day. Gina’s hair is making me want to bust out the clippers!

      • Teatimeiscoming says:

She definitely wears it well. Hers gives me skull envy, which I know sounds weird, but I found out the hard way that my skull is not entirely even. Oh well. The grow-out phase will last about a year.

I’ve had my head partially and fully shaved several times – don’t feel bad for me, please. I did it on purpose and I liked it *gasp*. I’m sure I’m not alone…

In fact, my 6 year old daughter has this haircut right now – she loves rocking an undercut. I feel like this article perpetuates the notion that women *should* have long hair. It feels gross.

    • shannon says:

In total agreement. I have wanted to shave my entire head for months, but can’t because of my own foolish fears. Not for what society will think, but more worried about my job than anything else. So tired of this stereotype that women need long hair to be WOMEN.

    • Wren says:

Agree! I have an undercut on one side and I really love it. The rest of my hair is medium length, but I’m seriously toying with the idea of doing something similar to Gina. It looks rocking and really nice for hot weather.

I hate the idea that women should have a certain hairstyle. Wear it how you like it. I’m not about to base my hair decisions on whether or not other women lose their hair to illness, just like I’m sure nobody decides to walk somewhere instead of driving because some people are in wheelchairs and can’t walk.

    • ab says:

same. I wore a shaved head for about five years and f’ing loved it. I only grew it out because I got a little bored with the lack of versatility. I’ve had locs for over 10 years now but I’ve been thinking lately about another buzz.

I also cut my daughter’s hair short about a year ago (she’s 3.5 now). she looked adorable with her sassy little pixie! bonus points: my mom had a fit. lol. her hair has grown back to her shoulders now and I’m thinking about giving her another pixie for the summer. she has very fine, wavy/curly hair so when it’s long it’s really high maintenance.

      • GiGi says:

I hear you. My daughter is black and has type 4c hair – it literally will tangle up in the time it takes to run a comb through it sopping wet with conditioner… it’s that thick. Add to that she has sensory issues. My son has an undercut and she wanted one, too. So I figured why not? The top is long and she can wear it in twists and beads or free and it really suits her personality. I don’t see her growing it out for awhile!

      • ab says:

my kid has sensory issues as well and she will not abide a headband or a hair clip, and she won’t let me cornrow/french braid it before bed to avoid the bird’s nest situation we deal with every morning (she’s a type 3a/b). my only option is to clear the tangles and pull it back into pigtails/ponytail, and I’m worried now about breakage around her edges. I think I’ve definitely talked myself into giving her a pixie again. lol.

    • layla says:

I’m totally rocking an undercut right now too with a short a-symmetric ‘do’ (much shorter than a bob… I just don’t know what to call it – haha) on top. I LOVE it. It is so so SO versatile! 🙂

I’ve also shaved my head before as well…one of the MOST LIBERATING things I have ever done.

      • GiGi says:

Same. I was a ballet dancer but when I suffered an injury in my early 20s, buzzing my waist length hair was the first thing I did! I loved it!

    • Ash says:

Same here, GiGi. I’ve partially and fully shaved my head. I always got compliments on it, although surprisingly, most of the compliments came from men.

      Anyway.

Right now, my head is shaved all around, except for my bangs and top part of my head. So, I guess, it’s an underside move. I cut and shave my own hair. I like the low maintenance look because I’m kind of lazy about keeping up on my hair when it gets long.

  3. Imqrious2 says:

She’s a beautiful woman. And yes, her hair is amazing, long or short (love the lob on her!).

As I found out, after losing my hair from chemo, it’s ONLY hair, and it does grow back (usually healthier than before, due to years of products, colouring, blowdrying, etc). At first, even though I took “the power” from I my illness, (I decided to get it buzzed off as it began to fall out, rather than wait for it to go, a handful at a time), it was a bit scary. After all, as women, a lot of our perceived femininity is tied up in our hair. But then I realised, my “power/femininity ” wasn’t in my long, shiny hair, it was in ME. It’s what I give out, so I started to see myself differently, and stronger, if that makes sense. So I say, GO GINA!

  4. Size Does Matter says:

I think it looks great on her. I’ve grown out pixie length hair twice. Not fun, but medium lengths make my head look like a Christmas tree, so it’s either long or short for me.

    • Delta Juliet says:

I recently grew my hair out from a pixie cut. What a pain in the ass. Loved my hair when it was super short though. I find you notice a lot more of the facial features when you don’t just see HAIR everywhere.

  5. Incognito says:

I think her undercut looks BADASS! She is such a beautiful woman, both physically and in her actions/words, from what we see publicly. I’d love to do an undercut with a bob, but I feel like you need to have really thick hair and my hair has thinned out a lot as I’ve gotten older.

Her hair does look thick and healthy! I have hair envy- of both her long and short hair.

  6. ella says:

I love her so much. She’s a breath of fresh air. Glad to see her getting more and more work.

  7. Skyblue says:

I’ve been tempted to get my hair undercut too. I think it is sexy and fun no matter what your age. I also hate the perpetuation of the myth that “long hair” = “sexy and feminine”. Boo.

    • Wren says:

It’s not a myth, though. Statistically men prefer long hair on women. It’s a fertility marker, like wide hips and poofy lips. There’s a reason hair, especially women’s hair, and how it is styled (or covered) has very specific cultural meanings around the world.

That said, fuck that shit. It’s just hair and in this day and age if we’re not free to wear our hair as we please without judgement then we seriously need to consider what’s important in life.

      • shannon says:

        Love this, Wren!

      • Fd says:

I’m confused–are you saying women with long hair, big lips and wide hips are actually more fertile than women who don’t have those characteristics? The fact that men “statistically prefer” something doesn’t mean it is a “fertility marker” as a matter of biological fact.

      • Locke Lamora says:

    • Lex says:

Men prefer what society tells them to prefer.

In the Renaissance, it was full figured, chubby, rolls, pale.
“Statistically” men now won’t say that that is their preference, or what they find most attractive, because it isn’t in fashion now.

Humans are unique from other animals in that we are aware of our instincts and can ignore or overcome them. If this weren’t the case, why would anyone ‘choose’ not to have kids when the biological point of adulthood is to reproduce? Why would any man ‘choose’ to couple with a very thin woman, when biology says she is less able to nurture? Because it isn’t about biology or instinct – it is about the preferences that we have developed through society.

  8. Fd says:

Cancer sucks. Short hair does not. I can understand why someone losing their hair against their will because of cancer or other reasons is sad. There is no comparison between that and cutting one’s hair voluntarily, whether for fun, work, or otherwise.

  9. kri says:

I adore this woman. She is so sexy, and that cut is hot. Also, so happy that she landed such an awesome role! Get it Gina!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. QQ says:

I’m with it, I actually like her very much, I like the things she very vocally espouses and I like also as a Latina her doing this ( short hair in our culture is still a thing people feel the need to give you sh!t about so I KNOW that is something she probably knew she’d deal with) and as a moviegoer im SO SO ELATED that she gets a chance to work with that kind of Talent, I Love the Director’s output, just good thoughtful adult fare ( Im a little bitter my bf dragged me at 9 pm yesterday to watch Captain America which I kept saying Avengers Movie cause… well it’s a rough rough morning on account of a not so good movie)

  11. shannon says:

What about the women who have been diagnosed with alopecia? Some women lose all of their hair, including their eyebrows due to auto-immune disorders. Not sure how they are supposed to feel about all of this. Not everyone can wear extensions, wigs, etc. Sometimes hair doesn’t always grow back.

  12. mp says:

Remember all the discusion about amy schumer being a size 6, well Gina looks like a size 6, nowhere near fat but good body.
    She’s so pretty 🙂

  13. Marty says:

She looks badass. I’m so happy to see her getting more film roles.

  14. Starkiller says:

Wow, who is pushing this girl? She goes from acting in a crappy CW remake to winning a Golden Globe for said crappy remake (which we know are bought and paid for) and now nabs a role in an Alex Garland film? She must have some friends in really high places.

    • Jenna says:

I’ve never seen it but isn’t Jane the Virgin really great supposedly? It’s gotten universally great reviews…

  15. AlmondJoy says:

Looove. Nothing like an awesome haircut to boost your confidence and give you a freeing feeling!

  16. Dani2 says:

I love her so much, I’m so glad she’s been getting a lot of work outside Jane the virgin as well, she seems like such a solid, good-head-on-her-shoulders, fearless role model. I love it.

  17. Darlene says:

I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! She looks amazing!!

  18. Magnoliarose says:

It looks good on her and fits her personality. It is good to see her career going in a good direction.

  19. Miran says:

Its hair, it grows back. Not a big deal.
