Amal Clooney’s Cannes street style involves a Monse bubble skirt: cute?

FFN_BRK_Clooney_Alamuddin_051016_52049907

It feels like it’s been months since we’ve seen Amal Clooney, right? She’s been quiet recently. Suspiciously quiet! But Amal is going to be making her Cannes Film Festival debut this week, and here are some photos of Amal and George Clooney arriving in the South of France. They were checking into the Hotel Du Cap, one of the big hotels servicing the Cannes crowd.

I’m looking forward to Amal’s fashion choice for the Money Monster premiere, and I’m also interested in seeing if George and Amal come out for more than one red carpet. Considering they arrived in France yesterday, Tuesday, I sort of suspect they’ll come out for the Opening Night premiere of Woody Allen’s Café Society tonight. Will she wear Dior? Will she wear vintage, which is what she chose for the Berlinale this year? Will she wear a girlish minidress? Will she debut a baby bump? Hm.

As for her arrival at the Hotel Du Cap, Amal wore an ensemble by Monse. I was desperate for a better look at this head on, which you can see in the Twitter photos below. BUBBLE SKIRT!! And her bag is Altuzarra.

It’s kind of hard to tell but from what we can see I quite like the skirt! Looks like a nice outfit

    • Liz says:

I agree, I think the skirt looks cute.

    • Kitten says:

Yeah I wish we had better photos but I like the outfit from what I can see. The skirt is pretty and perfect for Cannes. It’s a bit short but Amal tends to like shorter skirts.

    • Vava says:

I like the outfit, too – except for those sleeves on the sweater.

    • drnotknowitall says:

Me too. She has the legs to pull it off too.

  2. Jacqueline says:

I was very sad to see Cloiney make an appearance on carpool karaoke with Gwen Stefani & Julia Roberts. He seemed quite old and not funny.

    • Naya says:

I loved that episode, i thought he was great in it.

      • Jayna says:

I loved it, too. George singing a Gwen Stefani song was pretty cute. He gave it his all.

    • mia girl says:

I had the opposite reaction. I thought he made the segment. He was funny, goofy and totally game. Reminded me why I like him.
Plus it was a nice distraction from my dispair over Gwen Stefani’s totally frozen face.

      • Sarah01 says:

        Love carpool karaoke.

      • Sarah01 says:

I thought exactly the same thing, he was game, but Gwen what has she done?
I really like the outfit on her but not the slit in the sleeves. They should have capped the sleeves it would have been perfect.
        I love the bag.

    • Kitten says:

I’m surprised because I usually find him very funny in interviews, on late night shows, etc.

    • Miss M says:

I cringed with his affectation trying hard to be a cool grandpa…

  3. LAK says:

It’s a good thing i’m a fashion hoarder because i still have that skirt from the 80s. In my parents attic. Now whether i can fit into it is another matter!!!

  4. BearcatLawyer says:

Love the skirt, hate the shoes.

If she attends the Cafe Society premiere, I hope journalists ask her how her perceived support of an alleged child molester is truly compatible with her human rights work. But I doubt this will happen somehow.

  5. als says:

She is married to a movie star, has access to the most luxurious life, her career is going well, a baby bump is probably the last thing on her mind.
However, the fact that everyone is on baby bump watch says a lot about what is expected from women in our world.

    • Katie says:

Yes you’d think we would have moved beyond that by now.

    • Jayna says:

      Isn’t that the truth?

    • Naya says:

      Yes and its so infuriating.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I hear you, and I hate the term baby bump and all the speculation that goes with it, but why would it be the last thing on her mind? If she does want a child, what’s wrong with that? And if she does, neither of them are getting any younger.

    • Azurea says:

Well, unfortunately the man can’t carry the bump, so watcha gonna do?

      • Anon33 says:

Not automatically expect that everyone wants and will have children, for one.

  6. pretty says:

wow he looks like a 60 year old senior citizen grandpa. that’s just sad next to a young beautiful woman.

    • Birdix says:

In the top photo it looks like he’s having trouble getting up the stairs. Sad if it’s back pain…

    • Jayna says:

I think his back was giving him problems. I’ve never had lower back problems before, just my upper back from a sports injury But I went to pick up my senior dog while standing in heels and not correctly with soft bent knees like you’re supposed to my doctor said, just a straight bend down and grabbing the chunky monkey up, and I felt sudden horrible pain all across my lower back. I have been in so much pain for days, can barely get up without holding on to something, and literally walking like an old lady. Even to lift my leg to step up on a curb is excruciating for my back. Thankfully, no herniated disc after having an MRI, so it will heal.

So I feel for him. He said a month ago he had to get a shot for his back after he played basketball and kind of messed up his back. I think his back problem got exacerbated again.

      • Julia says:

        Hope you’re better?

      • Jayna says:

Thanks @Julia. Every day is a tiny bit better.

      • lucy2 says:

Oooh, I know that pain. I’ve had lower back problems for years, knock on wood have been doing a lot better since I got a new mattress. Try alternating heat and ice. A good chiropractor can help too.

I think Clooney injured his filming a movie, but if it is flaring up on him, then yeah, stairs can be an effort.

      • sauvage says:

Oh Jayna, I hear you! I had three lumbagos in 18 months (long stories, two of them involving a cat) in 2012/13, and pilates saved my a**, since it’s a workout that also strengthens your back, among other things.

A tip I got from my doctor was to pile up a couple of pillows, lie down and put my legs on the pillows in table-top position. It relaxes the lower back immediately.

        Get better, sister!

    • Sabrine says:

Why do people keep speculating on a possible pregnancy for this couple? It’s obvious that they will not be having any children. It’s ludicrous wasting time and energy even bothering to think about it. I wonder if Jennifer Aniston is finally free of people thinking she is pregnant every time she wears a loose top. That was also ridiculous. Let it go.

      • Jayna says:

I don’t think it’s obvious they won’t be having children. They very well could. But I think they are enjoying marriage as still kind of newlyweds and merging their lives and doing things that are important to them professionally. Too many people think having children is romantic right away in a marriage, but it can cause a lot of stress and changes the dynamic of the relationship, in a good way. But have fun first and have your selfish time in a relationship.

Plus, they seem busy in their lives. George once said even if he did become a parent, it would be that he would have lots of time to be a good father like his dad was, not a selfish father away all the time the way his career takes him. He said that back when he was in his late 30s and his career was booming.

    • Zuzus girl says:

He looks like the chronic pain is taking a toll. I had it too from an accident and it will age you terribly. I feel for him.

    • Azurea says:

Wash your mouth out with soap! 60 yr old senior citizen grandpa? Since when is 60 an age when we’re bent over & shuffling? Cripes!

      • Birdix says:

agreed! my mom is 70+ and works full time (puts the 40-somethings to shame with how much she gets done) and has a full schedule of activities, hobbies, travel etc. After 60 can be such a vibrant time of life, free of many of the concerns of midlife! But all this assumes good health, which maybe George doesn’t have. Back pain can really take it out of you.

    • Carol says:

The first thing that struck me from those pics is Clooney, looking like a grandpa. He must be in a lot of pain because it looks like he is having trouble getting up the stairs. Is his back problem really from that one incident in Syriana? Poor guy.

  7. 1979 says:

My three year old has a skirt like that.

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

LOL. My first thought was that it looked a bit like a DIAPER.

    • boredblond says:

It’s probably adorable on a toddler…the rear shots here look like an upside down pin cushion…

    • Malak says:

Yes…lol. I think that short bubble skirt just doesn’t go with the mature face.

  8. golden retriever says:

She looks over dressed and overdone as usual. Poor love just seems to think she is fashion forward but it’s just layer upon layer of expensive designer gear, that rarely goes together or suits her body type. She is wearing a puff ball skirt – that was like cool for maybe 5 mins in the 80’s and it’s certainly not cool now. Maybe on an 8 year old … maybe.

  9. paolanqar says:

I watched George Clooney in Carpool Karaoke with James Corden.
Wow he is so un-funny. He almost made Julia Roberts enjoyable.
    *cringe*

    • OhHellNo! says:

‘He almost made Julia Roberts enjoyable’, LMAO, thank you for that comment and for having the courage to watch anything with that old @ss in it.

    • GingerCrunch says:

Love this comment. Now, to watch or not to watch?

  10. lower-case deb says:

that bag, and its extra wide strap!
a bag after my own heart!!

  11. Jayna says:

I don’t like the skirt at all. I hate bubble skirts, dresses. Nope. That’s a big thumbs down from me. I am interested to see her on the red carpet. I’ve grown to enjoy seeing what Amal wears on her outings. At least, she’s interesting and never predictable.

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

Agree. Horrible trend that should have been left to die back in the 80s. What horror comes next, then? Gauchos from the 70s? Buffalo sandals? Gauchos WITH Buffalo sandals? Gah!

      • GingerCrunch says:

Don’t give her any ideas! All of those sound like something she would try!!!

      • Imqrious2 says:

Don’t look now, but gauchos ARE back now. They’re calling them “wide legged cropped pants” *shudder*

    • frivolity says:

Yup. I remember these from the 80s – in fact, I believe I had one. Hated it then, hate it now.

  12. Tara says:

I love the skirt! People are saying they were popular in the 80’s? I hope they’re coming back, I want one!

  13. golden retriever says:

Puff balls are rubbish & they only lasted for about 1 year in the 80’s. They aren’t flattering on any figure. They make the thigh area look massive. I was a puff ball bridesmaid as a child at my brothers wedding – black and white striped like Amals. I looked fat and packed the biggest strop. I can’t remember what happened to that skirt but I like to think I burnt that monstrosity.

    • antipodean says:

@golden retriever, anyone who can pack a strop over unacceptable bridesmaid attire is a woman after my own heart. Sometimes I think those outfits are purposely designed to make the wearers look extra frumpy so as not to draw attention from the Meringue on her “big day”. To inflict that on a child is a heinous torture indeed! I hope you did burn it in a firey pit!
It seems the only taste that the erstwhile Mrs Clooney has is all in her mouth. Despite a bottomless wallet she always looks like she got dressed in the dark. I could not believe that I saw epaulets on the shoulders of that shlumpy looking polyester blend top, and her shoe game would give Jennifer Garner a run for her money. One nice thing though, her hair is gorgeous, so she gets one small thumb up from me. It will be interesting to see what she drags out of the closet for her Cannes parade. Poor old George is looking seriously worse for wear. I wonder if Amal is considering if she got the best deal, husband wise? It’s the old story, marrying a tiger, just as he is signing up for his bath chair! Lucky her (sarky)!

    • frivolity says:

      Amen

  14. Lucky says:

The worst bridesmaid’s dress I ever wore had a bubble skirt like this, in 1989. It was also tragically, teal green and lace. Truly a crime against fashion. The bride also made us wear nude pantyhose and teal green lace shoes

  15. ReineDidon says:

@LUCKY that made me laugh 😂😂

I get her shoes are androgynous style, which I don’t mind. Her top is cute. BUT THAT SKIRT is dreadful. Burn it woman ! Plus too much is going on in that outfit. At least try to dress that skirt down with a simple top.

George looks like he lost his MOJO (à la Trump lol).

  16. Amelie says:

This entire outfit looks like things she pulled out of her closet at the last minute…it doesn’t work and unlike some of her other outfits, I don’t even find it pleasantly quirky.

To reply to comments made up thread…I don’t see Amal as someone whose career is front and center, rather she appears to be pursing fame, notoriety. She even has a website-shrine really-where one can go to make (only) glowing comments about her.

    • Coconut says:

I’m not too sure about this outfit either. To your comments: why would you want to be a newish to mid-level barrister working on hard-to-win human rights cases hinging on dry, dry, dry points of law (reality) when you can be seen as the greatest human rights barrister in the world and live a glamorous jet-setting life of designer gear, movie premieres, and pap walks (fantasy & celebrity).

    • HH says:

My issue with her casual outfits is that she picks statement/quirky pieces all the way around. There shouldn’t be multiple in one outfit. I would have liked the sweater with a simple bottom (same shoes), or the bottom with a simple top (different shoes), and simple accessories. The point of a statement and/or quirky item is that that’s where the attention is supposed to go. If there’s more than one, it just looks too busy/fussy.

I don’t mind Amal being into fashion and being a lawyer. I just have an issue with her lack of style (in her street/casual wear).

      • Amelie says:

For me, there has to be a ‘thread’ for lack of a better word that connects the pieces in an ensemble. I also think the hair/makeup has to be part of whatever one wears. And the ensemble needs to match the occasion. Amal or her fashion adviser is missing the point on all of these.

If I were to build an ensemble around this particular bubble skirt, I would match it with a crop top and sandals, lose the highly styled hair and glamour make-up. I would wear something like this ensemble to a beach side luncheon. I don’t see it as an arrival outfit.

I also think, having observed Amal for a while, that despite all of the designer clothing and apparently unlimited budget, that she hasn’t achieved her own style; it seems to me that she is being dressed in dramatically different ways by someone else and that she wears the clothing versus the clothing wearing her. just my opinion…

      • HH says:

@Amelie – RE: “If I were to build an ensemble around this particular bubble skirt…”>>> That should be how one puts an outfit together. Sometimes I think Amal just assumes items “match” in terms of color and therefore work all the way around. Also, I absolutely agree on her not finding her style. What’s interesting to me is the disconnect between her professional wear and casual wear. For her work outfits to be so classic (and always on the mark), her street style is a quirky, twee, hit or miss style (with more misses).

      • Malak says:

        I agree. ONE focal point!

    • nicole says:

I beleive that website was set up by Georges pr, its very fishy the way they know every peice of clothing she wears and the price, and the commenters all seem like they are payed to gush over her, even when she is wearing her hideous designer outfits. I commented once, and they never let my comments through again, very fishy, like the whole marriage is.

      • siri says:

That site also has pics sometimes that don’t appear on magazine outlets…so I agree, it’s smells of his/her PR. It’s basically a fansite.

      • Amelie says:

There is a defensive posture by the moderator and the few regulars there in response to reasonable posts. There is also message control vs a vs posts that I have not seen anywhere on any blog. Couple that with what appears as inside info and I agree that this is a PR vehicle for Amal.

    • Coconut says:

@HH and Amelie, I think the top and skirt was presented like that, together, on the catwalk. See the pics on Twitter that CB linked in this post. She added the bag and shoes herself.
@nicole I wouldn’t be surprised. I think fashion is a huge passion for her and she WANTS to be seen as a revolutionary fashion-forward type. But at the same time, I can believe there are crazy fashion fans who would do hours of research to ID a dress or bag. But, yes, likely to be her PR people – probably on her mother’s side, or her PR-professional mum has “developed a relationship” with that blogger and leaks photos to them. George’s PR people would probably be working on padding her resume rather than focusing on her fashion.

      • Amelie says:

        @ Coconut:
“probably on her mother’s side, or her PR-professional mum has “developed a relationship” with that blogger and leaks photos to them.”

I went back and read all of the posts on the site since the beginning (there’s aren’t too many). Some commenters suggest that Baria’s two sisters are frequent visitors there…based on the quality of the English, the moderator and many regulars use, I get the sense that they are speaking English as a second language.

  17. tracking says:

She looks great, but don’t get why she hasn’t been able to persuade her husband to ditch the frumpy dad jeans.

  18. Bella says:

I like her. She’s never boring, she could easily swap the interesting looks for some standard LA style. But she keeps to her own aesthetic. And her hair is rad.

But yeah, isn’t george starting to look old next to her?

  19. Felice. says:

Bubble skirts bring me back to late high school early uni lol

  20. QQ says:

I would possibly never on myself but I enjoy her sense of style

  21. Lambda says:

I was wondering if we’re going to see more bubble hems since A Vikander’s Oscar dress. Very cute.

  22. Tris says:

I love the sleeves on her sweater.

  23. Citresse says:

At least we have photographic evidence Clooney hasn’t succumbed to the temptation of getting a butt impant a la Kardashian.

    • Citresse says:

LOL- ps- correction; that should read butt implant. Some people’s butts get pretty flat with aging. Clooney’s denim look is getting old too.

      • Amelie says:

Per some of his recent TV appearances, he does look like he’s had a jowl lift.

  24. FingerBinger says:

Imo a bubble skirt is made for a younger person like the model. However she wears it well.

  25. lucy2 says:

I don’t remember bubble skirts from the 80s, nor do I think it’s a good look now.

  26. Kris says:

Why does she insist on dressing like a little girl? Honestly, her fashion choices combined with the fact that she apparently refuses to eat makes me think that she has serious issues.

I really really don’t get her. She does have a beautiful face and a lovely smile, and still I don’t find her at all attractive because of this forced childlikeness. I really hope she comes across as more of an adult in real life.

    • Amelie says:

“She does have a beautiful face and a lovely smile, and still I don’t find her at all attractive …”

Interesting point, I spent some time on a site dedicated to Amal and for whatever reason, the blog moderator seems to have access to photos of Amal not shown elsewhere (how interesting). Anyway, when I viewed these photos as well as others on other sites, I was taken aback by the many changes in her appearance. I mean ears, chin, nose surgery and reduction of fat in her cheeks. I mention this in response to your comment, because I also can’t find her beautiful because she now appears very different from whom she really is. For me, it’s a broader commentary on plastic surgery etc.

      • nenny says:

        Amelie ,I completely disagree with you,Amal is a natural beauty,and has a gorgeous face,very stylish woman,and smart,I can’t wait for next dress.

      • Amelie says:

        @nenny:
Well, I suggest you take a look at her historical photos…she has definitely had multiple procedures done. Sorry, she is no “natural” beauty. Just to clarify, I don’t object to a single nose job or facial peel, but when someone does multiple procedures (including ears) that effectively change the geometry of their face, that’s another matter. And I haven’t even mentioned Amal’s extreme weight loss. Frankly, I’m concerned about her.

    • nenny says:

Amelie,ok at the end it’s your opinion, but for me and others she still gorgeous woman.

      • Kris says:

I don’t know what she looked like “before” or if she had procedures done, but it would fit with my impression that she has issues with her looks and isn’t comfortable with who she is. Mind you, these are all just very personal impressions gained from pictures – she could be completely different and maybe it just doesn’t show on the pictures.

Also, keep in mind that weight loss can significantly alter the appearance of the face, so she might seem like she has had work done, but in reality it’s just a consequence of her being so very underweight.

Whatever the truth might be, to me, she appears uncomfortable in her skin – she slouches, she does these weird “little girl” moves with her feet, the childlike taste in fashion – that’s not how a self-confident, grown-up woman (who also bagged one of THE most-wanted Hollywoood bachelors) dresses or moves.

Then again, maybe that’s just her style, and I’m not one to criticize anyone for being different from the “norm” (even if a self-confident, successful, intelligent, attractive grown-up woman would be quite a nice “norm” IMHO).

At least she doesn’t have butt implants and dead eyes, and she still manages to look younger and fresher than the Hadid and Kardashians of this world.

  27. right says:

    Her shoe game is A+.

  28. mmtahoe says:

I actually searched online yesterday for this outfit and love the sweater top, thanks for the id!!

  29. Magnoliarose says:

It is hard to tell what it looks like together from these angles. But separately I like it.

  30. sauvage says:

I had almost the exact same skirt when I was eight! I paired it with a white sweatshirt featuring a cat, and an Alice band, and I felt absolutely fabulous.

  31. Pmnichols says:

    Love

  32. Sylvia says:

I quite like Amal’s style, bubble skirt and all — she’s more interesting and stylish than most celebs, who tend to be boring AF — I just wish she weren’t so thin.

  33. yep says:

Amal can wear anything and it looks good. A burlap sack. A sheet from goodwill. I mean it.
    She has the body.
Amal is what Kim K delusionally thinks she looks like in fashion.
