Was Ryan Gosling’s GMA interview ironically sarcastic hipster nonsense?

Ryan Gosling

Here are some photos of Ryan Gosling a few nights ago, at the LA premiere of The Nice Guys, the comedy he’s been promoting for months. Gosling’s suit is Gucci, and it looks great on him. I will be very interested in seeing how The Nice Guys does at the box office, and if bombs, who will get the blame? But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Ryan is really shilling for this film, so much so that he’s even talking about his ever-growing family as he does press, which is somewhat out of character for him. After welcoming his second daughter with partner Eva Mendes a few weeks ago, it seems like the floodgates are now open. He told People Mag that fatherhood is amazeballs and “It sounds so clichéd, but I never knew that life could be this fun and this great.” He also told People that he “can’t wait” to take his daughters to Disneyland, which was always his go-to date spot back when he was single. He actually said he “misses” going to Disneyland. Hm.

But this is what I wanted to discuss – Ryan was on Good Morning America on Thursday and at first, I just read the quotes and I thought, “Wow, he’s being really sweet.” But then I watched the video and I had a different reaction. When asked about the latest edition to his family, baby Amada Lee, and how he’s now outnumbered 3-to-1 in his house, Ryan said: “It’s heaven. It’s like walking through a field of flowers every day. I live with angels.” Sweet, right? Now watch the video:

Was that statement dripping with ironic hipster sarcasm? Like, is he literally too cool to give a straight, no-bulls—t answer to “do you love your daughters?” Because it feels like his answer was hipster nonsense.

Oh, and he tried to say that he has never, ever said “Hey Girl” to anyone.

He’s insufferable. I can’t believe I liked him over the other Canadian Ryan.

    • here or there says:

      ITA
The other Canadian Ryan is way better!!

    • Mom2two says:

I never have and never will understand the hype around Gosling.

    • kcarp says:

Every time I think I don’t like him, I happen to watch The Notebook or Crazy, Stupid, Love and I remember that I do like him.

He is like a Facebook friend that posts stupid stuff about how their family is perfect and stuff and you roll your eyes. Then you see your friend you remember why you like them even if they do make you gag sometimes.

  2. anniefannie says:

He seems to be in a jokester, sarcastic mood. I think it has little to do w/ reality and more to do w/ it either being early and/or resentful at having to shill for the latest movie. Either way it made the anchor a little off her game, uncomfortable and I felt for her.

    • Jegede says:

I really really hope its not that he’s resentful to work for his movie.

Gosling could easily do something else to ‘express’ himself as an artist if that’s the case.
As they say in Lagos “isnotbyforce”.

I kinda felt for the anchor too.

    • Kimbers says:

That question was pretty bad, as in “wow no man with daughters ever got that one asked…” it’s kinda rude as well. i would have answered the same way probably. Anchor fail.

      • Kitten says:

        This.

He was giving a silly, throwaway answer to a throwaway question.

      • Tiffany :) says:

I can’t believe people are giving him a hard time for this. Newborns can be a challenging experience, and just because they are girls doesn’t mean its going to be all sunshine and flowers. IMO, it almost seemed like he was thinking of those diapers where they shoot poo up their backs and all over their pajamas. Oh yes, because their girls its been all rainbows, butterflies…and spit up in my ear.

Ultimately, I think he was just trying to have fun with a weak question. His entire press tour with Russell has been quippy because of the movie they are promoting.

    • Starkiller says:

What a shame he was forced to become a Hollywood “actor”. How he must suffer. If this Picasso-looking jerk is resentful about doing his job, he’s more than free to retire to a cabin in northern Ontario. What a knob.

    • KB says:

I got a completely different vibe. He turned it into a joke about Russell Crowe and he just seemed completely at ease. I mean did he literally mean it was a field of flowers? Obviously not, but he wasn’t being sarcastic, imo at all.

      • Locke Lamora says:

I came here prepared to hate him, but I don’t get it. He made it into a joke about Russell. I thought it was funny.

    • qwerty says:

It was funny and not rude in any way? People on english talk shows respond like that all.the.time. and everyone has fun…

  3. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I see what you mean about the way he said it. Not mean, or sarcastic exactly, or anything bad, I just didn’t know quite how to take it. Was he making fun of the question?

Is it a thing now for men his age to button the top button of their jacket and leave the bottom one open? It makes the jacket look too small to me.

P.S. Asked husband about this and he said you always button only the top button on a two button jacket, but it looks different because of the fit of the jacket, which, as old fs, we agreed was two sizes too small.

    • Susan says:

Agreed. I too am a bit of a sarcastic asshole and I’ve learned that the best way to temper it (for people that don’t know how to take me, which is most of the population), is to then smile and gently clarify. I would have then said, “no seriously, it’s a blessing to have two healthy daughters, they’re just very young and not sleeping through the night and so there’s a lot of noise…” Sarcasm is generally accepted and understood when you then clarify.

      • Kitten says:

Yeah you make a VERY good point. I think that’s a big part of what differentiates sarcastic people from straight-up aholes: that clarification added after a sarcastic comment.

I’m surprised people wouldn’t know how to take you because even from this simple comment you seem to have a ton of self-awareness.

      • ab says:

I’ve learned to do the clarifying thing as well. my sarcastic/snarky responses tend to come out before I can stop myself, so I use the follow up to make sure people know I’m not just being a dick. I do think ryan was poking fun at the dumb question, but he went a little too snarky with his answer.

    • ESS says:

The Amazing Carson Kressley’s direction on a 3 button suit “Always, Sometimes, Never” which my husband applies to 2 button suits as well.

  4. Joe-Joe says:

I think it’s a matter of him constantly being asked about his family, which he is not comfortable with, and him taking the piss out of the press in order to give them what they want. If you want a more earnest answer from him about his family watch his ellen interview.

  5. Jegede says:

    LOL.
Knowing Gosling’s history that Disneyland quote was cute & cringeworthy at the same time.

  6. wood dragon says:

I vote for comedic sarcasm. He and Russell Crowe brought the full comedy act to Colbert last night.

    • Samtha says:

Yeah, it seemed clear that he was joking, not trying to be rude. He has a dry, deadpan sense of humor.

  7. pwal says:

I have no issue with his tone at all. After all, half the time, the clucks on morning talk shows are lamenting about the good ole days when “McGosling”/The Notebook roamed the earth and doing mind puzzles, figuring out how Mendes and Gosling happened.

Just a few weeks ago, I was watching Entertainment Tonight and that douche Cameron Mathison was lamenting about how McGosling was soooo great and derisively ‘apologizing’ to Eva and then this week, he’s on the red carpet interviewing Ryan and ‘congratulating’ him on the new addition. Ryan doesn’t have to read or troll about this. He likely paid attention to what happened to others, i.e. Brad Pitt, who have irrelevant people critiquing his personal life/choices and then, fawning in his face, trying to get a nugget of scoop, as if they are cool with him/part of his circle.

Looking forward to The Nice Guys. 70s throwback… I’m there!

  8. Dangles says:

Hipster in a Gucci suit? I don’t know.

Anywho, I have a question for the Americans. In Australia, like in America, we call racist hicks from the country rednecks. However, if they live in the suburbs we call them bogans. What is the suburban equivalent to a redneck called in America?

    • escondista says:

I don’t think we have an exact word for suburban white trash because, for the longest time, making it to the suburbs meant you had made it in America. I think the word you’re looking for might be a “townie” or possibly “trailer trash.”

      • Kitten says:

True and very amusing, considering my parents’ 4,000 sq ft home in a fancy suburb is appraised for less than the ratty three-family I’m renting across from city housing projects.

Meanwhile, people who stayed in Boston 40 years ago and bought property instead of leaving for the grassy ‘burbs are rich as hell now.

      • Dangles says:

It’s the same in Melbourne, Kitten. Houses the size of shoeboxes in the inner-metro areas are worth way more than the McMansions in the outer suburbs.

    • Susan says:

It’s not widely used but some call them ‘nouveau Riche.’

    • Antonym says:

I’ve heard redneck used to describe the suburban as well as rural.

    • Shambles says:

      “Rednecks with Paychecks.”

    • Sarah says:

In Australia we do not use the term rednecks… where on earth do you live where people say that?

  9. Lucy2 says:

I feel like he was pretty clearly joking around, not sure why anyone would read more into it than that.

    • Lora says:

True, I thought it was really funny

    • Sarah says:

100% agree. He was being sarcastic, in a way where anyone should pick up on. I actually laughed a little at his response because his answer (in the jest of wittiness) is the perfect response to the typical “how is fatherhood/
How Is your newborn” questions. Also lauged at his “you should do this professionally” comment. He was just joking, but I also have the same sense of humor.

    • Samtha says:

That’s how I read it too! He’s got a dry sense of humor, which seems to throw people off.

  10. MexicanMonkey says:

I’d have to really really reach to find anything wrong with the comment or the way he said. But I have been watching some of his interviews for the Nice Guys lately and that just seems to be his sense of humor.

He was hilarious on Jimmy Kimmel with the too tight suit.

    • Kitten says:

Reach away! That’s what we do here. But yeah, ITA with you on all counts. This is classic Gosling.

  11. Josefina says:

I’ve always hated questions like that. What’s the point of that question exactly? Implying Ryan would love her daughters more if they were boys? And how is that related to the movie he’s promoting anyway?

I guess he could’ve been more polite considering morning talk shows always ask questions like that, and he must obviously be aware, but I can’t say I’m mad at him for giving an answer like that to a very stupid question.

  12. Kate says:

It’s an extremely stupid, bordering on offensive question. I think he gave it as much respect as it deserved.

  13. ZombieLover says:

He was joking around. He is a smart funny guy. I enjoyed his interview as did the women interviewing him. This article is nit picking over nothing.

  14. TyrantDestroyed says:

I used to liked him and though he used to make very interesting choices in films and characters, but checking his latest movie trailer and this interview I feel like that ship has sailed now. Bye bye Ryan.

  15. Tiffany says:

This is on par with the promotion of the film. The more I see them, the more I am interested in seeing the film.

  16. jess1632 says:

that suit in the header picture is doing him 0 favours it looks tight around his stomach and looks ill-fitting…he hasn’t been looking that good lately..and this is first I’ve heard of this movie he’s promoting

  17. Jayna says:

He was just being cute in the interview with his comments Even the crew was laughing. I liked him in the interview, not over the top, just his low-key type humor when joking about his angels. He and Russell really seem to have chemistry and genuinely like each other in interviews I have seen. This movie looks like it might be good. I hope so. Unlike some, I love to go see Russell in movies. He’s a great actor, no matter his personal life. And I love Ryan in movies also.

  18. Lucy says:

I’m sorry, but I’m really not sorry to say that I (unpopularly) love him!!

  19. Kate says:

Is it just me, or does he look FAR too well rested for a man with a 2-week-old in his house? How many nannies do they HAVE to look that well rested?!

  20. Miss M says:

I actually liked his answer. Lol

  21. Rae says:

I thought he was funny but I am Australian and our sense of humour is similar to this.
