Michael Phelps calls changing his two week old baby’s diaper ‘a milestone’

Swimmer Michael Phelps and Nicole Johnson became parents to little Boomer Phelps on May 5. Recently, Michael posted this ^^ picture of the little guy. Say it with me, “Aaaaaaw”.

Phelps is currently training for the Rio Olympics. I really like Phelps but I admit that I watch him compete more than follow his life. I had no idea, for instance, that fellow Olympian Allison Schmitt was a permanent houseguest with the Phelps/Johnsons. I knew they trained together but she appears to be his constant companion, not shady but like a kid sister. I also didn’t know that Phelps has a Facebook Live series. FB Live allows fans to ask questions and get answers in real time from whoever is filming. In his latest video, questions about Boomer pepper the feed and Michael admits he changed his first diaper – only 19 days after the baby was born. Way to go, Champ.

Olympic swimming champion Michael Phelps has introduced his newborn son Boomer to the world in a live Facebook video.

The gold medalist and his fiance Nicole Johnson were answering questions on the video blog as they drove to the airport with baby Boomer and a family friend in the backseat.

Phelps admitted that he had only changed his son’s diaper once since he was born on May 5.

‘I changed my first diaper today,’ the 30-year-old swimming star said. ‘The photos that (the doula) showed me of what diapers could look like freaked me out, not gonna lie. I was afraid to change a diaper at first, and today I was like, ‘I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna have that experience before we leave.’

He joked that changing his son’s diaper was ‘a milestone.’

Johnson said that the couple did not have a nanny – despite their busy schedules – but she said her mother had been helping out with Boomer.

The proud dad also revealed that fatherhood was taking a toll on his training. He said he’s already lost ten pounds in three weeks and was not looking forward to having to his weight-gaining diet once he arrived back in Colorado.

‘It’s like, you’re so tired, you really don’t want to eat all the time, so it’s almost like I’m forcing myself to eat when I don’t necessarily want to eat,’ he said.

[From Daily Mail]

I am laughing at the diaper thing because if you have any experience with infants, the 19-day old soiled diaper is nothing to go by. I can’t wait to see his video after that child starts on solid food.

His video series can be quite dry, for lack of a better pun. But I played them in the background as I did other stuff and picked up some facts about his life and training that I did find interesting, like how cool Nicole is. I especially like his swim practice videos. One thing everyone reiterates is that he and Allison have not qualified for the Olympics yet. I appreciate this because once an athlete thinks they have it in the bag, that’s usually when they lose their slot. #TEAMUSA!

Thank you @arschmitty for capturing this moment with my sleeping boys… #boomerphelps @m_phelps00 & Legend #family #happy #love

Adorable baby. Too bad dad’s an egocentric, drunk-driving @sswipe.

That is kind of how I feel about him. I get that people do stupid stuff, but he came off so entitled for such a long time, that it is hard to take him seriously now. Waiting 19 days to change the diaper seems pretty entitled and bratty. Grow up. You are a daddy now. Also, mama’s boys make me batty and he is a big ol mama’s boy.

      THIS x100

What’s the baby’s real name? Please tell me it’s not Boomer. I loathe that nickname, btw. Every athletic, dumb frat boy I knew in college comes to mind.

  3. SNAP says:

I thought Boomer was the baby’s nick name. Is his middle name Ang? #BoomerAng

  4. Dangles says:

I changed my baby’s nappy the day after he was born. That makes me faster than Phelps. So where’s my endorsement money?

    • megs283 says:

Yeah. His first diaper was on day 19?! By conservative estimates, that means someone else changed about 160-180 diapers before he did 1. He does not win a medal or any credit at all for this nonsense.

      • Cran says:

Day 19? Baby poo freaks him out? Yeah wait until lil Boomer drops a real one on him when he moves to solid food. Or when he goes in the midst of being changed. That’ll be one shower Michael will always remember. Lol.

Ha! Internet gold medal to you, Dangles!

  5. Polkasox says:

Annoying. He’s sleep deprived but he doesn’t change diapers? What is he doing while she’s taking care of baby – staring at them? Baby poo is no big deal. I don’t understand men who don’t take more part in their children’s care.

    • Lindy79 says:

9 days seems a long time to go without having done one yet given that babies poop several times a day.

  6. Alix says:

Imagine how proud he’ll be when he “babysits” for the first time, five or six years from now!

  7. Miss M says:

    Aw! Cute!

  8. trillian says:

My baby has diarrhea so I’ve had a diaper-changing experience like 14 times today. Guess I should feel happier about that …

  9. Somegirl says:

Seriously, 19 days?! I’ll admit when my son was born I only changed one diaper for the first 4-5 days, but that was because I was in a hospital bed hooked up to an IV recovering from a horrific birth experience. And you know who changed all the other diapers in that time period? My husband, like any proper father should. Did he seriously not even change the baby while she was recovering from giving birth?!
