Heineken isn’t happy that Benicio del Toro talked about Johnny Depp

wenn23583388

“There’s more behind the star.” Yeah, domestic violence and bro-gaslighting!!! As you can see above, Benicio del Toro is the current face of Heineken beer. He’s doing print ads and commercials for the brand, and I’m sure he’s contractually obligated to attend a certain number of Heineken-sponsored events throughout the year. One of those events was this week, Tuesday night. And because Heineken wanted lots of press coverage of their event, they of course invited reporters and media outlets to the event. That was a bad idea, because the New York Daily News asked Benicio point-blank about his friend Johnny Depp and the accusations of domestic abuse lodged against Depp by Amber Heard. As we covered yesterday, Benicio’s answers were not good, especially when he called Amber “manipulative” and “a little twisted.”

In yesterday’s story, I even noted that Heineken probably wasn’t happy that Benicio used their event to discuss the Depp-Heard stuff. I wrote: “I bet the Heineken people were really glad that Benicio used their event to speak about this. ‘Heineken does not endorse the misogyny of their spokesperson,’ is probably what some beer publicist is writing now.” Well guess what? A glorious follow-up from the NYDN:

While Dos Equis is searching to replace their “Most Interesting Man in the World,” Heineken is distancing themselves from the most embarrassing spokesman in the beer business. On Tuesday, Heineken sponsored a promotional event hosted by Benicio Del Toro, who took the opportunity to defend his “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” co-star Johnny Depp against domestic abuse charges. Del Toro argued that Amber Heard, Depp’s wife, seemed “manipulative” and “twisted.”

Apparently that wasn’t the kind of press that Heineken had in mind. After the Daily News story ran, a staffer for the Edelman public relations firm, which represents Heineken, called and emailed, asking that we disassociate their client from that damning Del Toro article.

“Can you please remove the mention of the Heineken event in the quote?” read the request from Edelman P.R. “That was not the intent of the press day and would appreciate if you could do so.”

It gets better. That rep then asked if, after sanitizing the story we have online, we might be doing another article about their beer, where Del Toro doesn’t come across as an advocate for spousal abuse.

“Will there be another piece focused on BDT + his relationship with the brand?” we were asked.

Voila! Here it is. Once again, we’re assuming this isn’t what they had in mind. Del Toro is involved in a two-year campaign with Heineken, which is billing the partnership as the actor’s “first-ever brand deal of this scale.”

Edelman calls itself “the world’s largest P.R. firm” and has done damage control for both the Saudi monarchy and Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. during its phone hacking scandal. But there isn’t much that can be done to spin the fact that Del Toro plays for Team Depp when it comes to his ongoing domestic abuse controversy. Heineken USA spokeswoman Tara Rush stands by Del Toro.

“Heineken does not intend to distance itself from Benicio del Toro,” according to Rush. “Benecio’s (sic) comments on a friend’s personal matter are strictly his own views and opinion, and do not reflect those of Heineken.”

[From The NYDN]

This is so funny. Props to the NYDN for publishing this. I doubt the PR firm knew they were making comments on the record. Heineken really, really does not want you to associate their brand with domestic violence or apologists for abusers or gaslighting abuse victims. I wonder if Benicio is getting a call right now too.

  1. What was that says:

What till the European owners get wind of this…he will be out in 1..2..3..
Faster than that Eurofizz takes to bubble…
Beer in the UK is a serious business…this is considered lager..!!!

    • dippit says:

Except Heineken lager isn’t taken seriously as even a decent lager in the UK. It’s the one guys turn up with at impromptu bbqs because it was ‘on special for 12’ at the supermarket they ran into en route to their mate’s house.

Whether he believes what he said is true, and believes himself to have cause to hold that opinion, this was a definite moment to either:

“It is a private matter between two parties subject to some legal proceedings therefore it is not appropriate for me to comment”

Or (more succinctly – and leaving him the option to comment at a future point if he felt the need)

“No comment, I’m on the company clock”.

  2. Crumpet says:

Good! But what would be even better is if they dumped his crusty ass and made a public statement about why. Come on Heineken, don’t be such a wuss.

  3. Hegimal says:

Heineken is Dutch and I suspect that they are waaaaaay more progressive than say, their retrograde Australian or US counterparts.

Bad move Benicio! And seriously bummed…I always thought you were so cool.

  4. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

    Ha! You totally called it.

  5. Kitten says:

Fitting that he would be the face of such a sh*tty beer.

    • Tiffany says:

      It is awful, isn’t it.

I call it the gentleman’s Rolling Rock.

      • stinky says:

aw MAN! i like ‘Rolling Rock’ (lol)
        ‘Heinekin’s’ all skunk & R.R. aint …
(are they both really so hated? dang… im outta da beer-loop cuz im hard-hittin the vodka & red red wine) I’ll just chime in to say Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is bitter beer and no one will EVER admit it. How it blew up so huge i will n-e-v-e-r know.

    • Crumpet says:

Haha!!! I laughed out loud – thanks Kitten, I needed that.

    • Tiffany :) says:

      Ha, yes! Skunk nasty beer!

    • Myrto says:

Probably the worst beer in the world…

      • littlemissnaughty says:

I take it you’ve never tried Budweiser.

      • Erinn says:

        I don’t even care if it’s crap – but I’ll buy Bud Platinum’s

… But it’s Alexander Keith’s IPA that really gets my love. “The PRIIIIIDE of Nova Scotia”

I got to do a brewery tour two summers ago – it was really cool. There were like.. amazing stone passage ways that Keith used to get from his house to the brewery and it was so amazingly beautiful and creepy.

Supposedly it’s available at least in some of the States.

      • Kitten says:

I think Bud and Heineken are equally-awful. The only difference is that Heineken is generally more expensive because it’s an “import”.

      • Bridget says:

Bud at least doesn’t pretend to be good.

    • littlemissnaughty says:

Hey hey, no need to insult the beer. I love me some Heineken now and then although I prefer the Bavarian “Helles” in general. I take sh*t for the former all the time (beer is serious business in Germany after all). Now I may have to boycott them until they slap him or his contract is up. … I don’t even know what to eat/drink anymore. Once you boycott Nestlé, you’re screwed. And now this. Ugh.

      • Kitten says:

Well, I didn’t mean to offend and of course, to each his own, taste is subjective, etc etc.

But in the States we have the most amazing and diverse selection of craft beer in the world.
There’s just no need to be drinking what is in my opinion a boring, flavorless skunk-ass beer like Heineken when we have access to every brew-style imaginable: IPAs/APAs/IPLs, porters and stouts, goses, Heffies, Pilsners, red/amber ales, biere de gardes, wild ales, and on and on.

      • Tobbs says:

yeah, I bet you have freedom beer too. Come on, you could get all those brew-styles in Europe too.

      • Veronica says:

Her statement isn’t inaccurate as far as numbers go. America’s undergoing a bit of a microbrew boom right now. Forbes did an article on the phenomenon awhile back. Europe has a very slight edge if taken as a continent’s worth, but the United States seems to have the largest amount available in a single country. Which makes sense? We’re a one of the biggest countries in the world, geography wise. We have a lot of space and plenty of people to get drunk. :p

      • Tobbs says:

I haven’t read the Forbes article, but I don’t doubt that based on numbers the statement is true. Or that american microbreweries have created some amazing beer. It was the underlying notion that only in America do you have access to the most amazing variety of beers, while we in Europe only have sh*tty, bland pilsner that I took offense to. I can’t think of a single bar in my neighborhood that doesn’t serve almost all of the brew-styles listed. I’m sure some of it is american though 😛

      • Kitten says:

@Tobbs-You don’t have to agree but what I said is factually accurate: America invented the craft beer boom and we have the best beer in the world. If you don’t believe me, just Google “World Beer Cup” and see who the winners are. There are roughly 10,000 craft breweries world wide and 4,000 of them are in the US.

I’m a huge beer fanatic and I travel a lot. I’m always looking to visit local breweries and I have to say: at least in Paris and London the variety and selection of beer cannot compare to what we have in the US. Sure, they have some great beer bars and some nice, solid breweries but the quality of beer brewed in craft breweries in a huge city like London can’t hold a candle to the selection in a tiny city like my Boston.
It’s not that it’s hard to find a variety of brew styles, but it’s much harder to find a selection of beer styles that are done WELL.

In fact, I would love for you to come visit and do a beer tour here in Boston. It’s really fun and you get the chance to try beers that I guarantee are unlike anything you’ve ever had before.

If it makes you feel better you can always bring up Trump but no, you cannot win on the craft beer front. Sorry not sorry 😉

      • Lambda says:

Late to this party, but I’m a huge beer patriot, not so much a drinker, but, thanks, Kitten, for putting same factual flesh on the bones of my perception that America is the greatest country for beer (along with Belgium maybe). True, that rice piss Budweiser still has majority of the market, but you can’t drop a needle without hitting a microbrewery around here, or at least outside dry counties. Beer tourism should be an angle.

      • SmartyPants says:

Please don’t get your beer information from Forbes. Their “best beers” list is an incomplete, ill-informed travesty and they have their noses up in the InBev and A-Busch jerks who are buying up all the craft breweries while simultaneously placing ads mocking craft beer drinkers so the yokels that like their pisswater don’t get offended.

Phew. That was a long run-on.

      • littlemissnaughty says:

I’m not a huge beer fanatic, I’m a wine lover at heart. But there is no country – or beer, for that matter – that’s objectively “the best”. I’ve tried some €5 wines that I love and recently was able to taste some that goes for €400 a bottle. … I didn’t see how it was €395 better than the supermarket wine, frankly. Don’t get me wrong, it was phenomenal, but not THAT phenomenal. It’s all a matter of taste and even if the US has the largest variety, it doesn’t mean that a) I need that much variety and b) it’s necessarily the best. I think some American beers I’ve tasted are simply so different from what I’m used to here that I didn’t care for them.

In general, I don’t care for food snobs. That Bud comment was a joke. If you prefer jello over soufflé, go for it. If you like Bud Light over some obscure craft beer, enjoy.

    • doofus says:

yeah, I was kind of wondering…does anyone drink Heiny anymore?

in college and just after, it was what dude-bros drank to look upscale/cool. and skunk is right, Tiffany!

    • Wren says:

Heineken has always made me slightly nauseous. I was told once that it tends to have levels of a mycotoxin called vomitoxin very near the accepted threshold.

      Fitting.

    • NUTBALLS says:

      BOOM!

I can’t think of anyone I know who would drink that shit when so many great microbrews exist. Disgusting, nasty stuff.

    • honeybee blues says:

I’m a beer drinker. I live in Colorado. Beer Mecca, among other legal intoxicants.

  6. cindy says:

Blech. He couldn’t be reached cause he was too far up JD’s…..well, you know.

  7. Flowerchild says:

It dosen’t look like they will be renewing his contract. Lol that why you say no comment and voice your opinion on your own time.

  8. Crackkin says:

The more I learn about the ‘more’ behind all these stars the less I wish I knew.
Arrogant wealthy white douchebags and their thoughts. No thanks.
Nice choice of spokesperson and slogan Heineken.

  9. Margo S. says:

Benicio seems like a moron. Makes sense why he’s never had a brand endorsement deal before this, and probably won’t have one after. He just speaks and doesn’t think.

  10. QQ says:

Bwahaahha That’s delicious actually, these stories need to continue making it to print ( like what happened to Ken Starr during that interview question about the Baylor email from a victim of sexual assault) that’s actually good journalism

  11. OriginallyBlue says:

Defending your friend whose wife claims he beats her when he’s drunk while at an event shilling beer. Good call.

  12. Lbliss says:

Whoa whoa whoa whoa shitty beer? This beer has been my go to beer for almost 20 years. Say what you must about the spokesperson, but leave the beer alone 😂

  13. siri says:

I guess Benicio will have to pay for his beer from now on;-) Bad luck, you moron.

  14. Ivy says:

Ironically, a beer company marketed to men is supporting a female victim whose husband’s violent behavior is fueled by…alcohol. Huh. Props to Heineken.

    • Miss M says:

That’s what I was thinking. The irony in it…
BDT needs to learn that when you are hired to do a job, to do the job. Leave your personal opinion avout your friends for your private life.

    • Who ARE these people? says:

My thoughts too. Given that alcohol fuels a lot of bad behavior … oopsie. Why did they pick him, because he looks so rough and “manly?”

  15. LadyLoo says:

I’d think they’d be more unhappy about his face.

  16. Flower says:

    Sweet karma.

    What a dope.

  17. dana says:

Im all for brands being pushed to keep their sponsors responsible esp when supporting sexual assault.

Speaking of, did anyone question Amazon regarding Woody Allen?

  18. Wren says:

Ha ha ha ha haaaaaaa! I’m loving this. If he’s going to say dumb stuff in public he should suffer the consequences.

  19. Susie 1of 3 says:

Hopefully there’s language in his contract to be able to dump him. Always thought he looked interesting. Exotic name. Now just another ass clown.

  20. cd3 says:

BWAHAHAHAHAHA I love that Heineken and the PR firm were called out.

  21. Dangles says:

Yay! Let’s all get butthurt over our taste in beer!

  22. Rose of Sharon says:

You called it, Kaiser. Well done. But why did Heineken sign Del Toro on a 2-year contract? Shouldn’t they have been a little more circumspect?

  23. Lauren says:

I always thought “man that guy looks creepy” whenever I saw his heineken commercial on the telly. Now I know why.

  24. Annice Monique Brown says:

I feel like this website is accusing tmz for siding with Johnny Depp but your doing the same damn thing with Amber Heard, and your trying to screw Benicio del Toro for his opinion what about Amber Heards motivation, why hasn`t she filed a police report why don`t you investigate the whole situation before you jump to your pathetic conclusion, And just so you know TMZ doesn`t take aim at any other news or gossip source. they stick to the facts or from I witnesses, so maybe you should do the same, and stop trying to get attention by talking about another more famous and more accurate news source like TMZ lol
