Kate Hudson and ex Matt Bellamy celebrate son Bing’s birthday

With all of the ugly divorce and custody battle stories running rampant in entertainment, it’s nice to hear about celebrity exes that actually get along. Kate Hudson and her ex-fiancé, Muse singer Matt Bellamy treated their son Bing (short for Bingham, not named after the lame search engine) to a preview performance of the new Harry Potter play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, at London’s famed Palace Theater on Saturday night.

Both Kate and Matt posted pictures of the outing, which included Kate’s 12-year-old son, Ryder. Matt looks every inch the proud parent, captioning the snap, “Happy Bday Bing!!! #harrypotterandthecursedchild @katehudson xxx,”

In addition to seeing one of England’s hottest theater tickets (the show is currently in previews and opens on July 30), Kate and Matt also got their son a Tony Hawk-themed skateboard cake and a remote-controlled BB-8 (from the latest Star Wars flick) toy. Kate posted some pics and videos on her Snapchat of Bing playing with his new toy. If Kate is anything like me, and I don’t have kids, I suspect she got a little play time in with BB-8 herself. I totally would have.

Kate and Matt became an item in spring of 2010 and got engaged in April 2011. When Bing was born in 2011, the couple developed their own winery, Hudson Bellamy Wines. The winery is still going strong (and if you live in California, Washington D.C., Florida or Minnesota, you can order their wines online), but the pair ended their romantic relationship in December of 2014. They have remained friends post-breakup, which I think could probably be the best gift of all for Bing. Kate also posted an adorable pic snuggling up with Bing in bed, with the caption, “And with a snap of my fingers, five years flew by…. Happy Birthday Bingo.”

Also on Kate’s Instagram is a poem she posted decrying the recent outburst of violence in the US. She wrote a surprisingly poignant poem and captioned the post, in part, “It becomes overwhelming that there could be such hatred and senseless killing. When I can’t make sense of things I just start to write. I don’t usually share my writing but I felt a desire to put this out there.”

I must say, despite the fact that get emails every freaking day promoting Kate’s Fabletics fitness wear line, I still think she’s a cool lady. She and Matt treated their son to a great, but not over the top birthday celebration and she seems like a very down-to-earth kind of woman.

If Bing gets together with Onyx=Bionyx

She seems like a loving mom but that doesn’t diminish my irrational dislike for her. Sorry!

Five is young to be a Harry Potter fan…

    • KHLBHL says:

Hey, I was reading Harry Potter when I was five or six (1999)! It’s never too early to become a Potterhead. I found a used copy in the free book section of my library and read it without knowing it was for older kids.

    • Brittney B. says:

Same here, KHLBHL. I started reading at two, so by the time I was five, I was already digging into chapter books.

But he *could* be a fan of the movies. I mentor a little girl, and when she was five, she was into plenty of PG and PG-13 movies already.

    • Starkiller says:

Er, they are in fact children’s books. Despite this recent bizarre trend of adults reading children’s books, they are written for and meant to be read by children.

Her poem was so heartfelt I managed to my silence my literary editor voice and feel her fear and grief. So lovely she shared this… but I don’t follow her closely, so beyond the whitewashed Mother’s Day I have no idea what she does/doesn’t do for communities of color.

Either way, she seems to be one of those relatively harmless stars, not co-opting other cultures or glamorizing gun violence or shaming other women or committing crimes. Goldie and Kurt did a great job with this one.

I have to say she seems to have a positive down-to-earth relationship with her exes and her children, can’t help but like her for that. Of course, I’ve always adored her mom, so there’s that.

  6. Emily says:

Fabletics is my big guilty pleasure at the moment (well Fabletics and Tiddles). I’ve had to start working out more often in order to justify ordering so many outfits. Their stuff is just so cute!

They somehow managed to remain friends without living in the same house or doing post break-up pap-strolls or her continuing to ‘support’ him in concerts?

    • Tiffany says:

I really would not expect anything less from Kate. When she is done with a relationship, she is done.

      • Sarah says:

I always felt that Matt Bellamy was a rocker sperm donor for Hudson. She seemed to really want a second child at that time. I’m glad for their son’s sake that they get along.

  8. my3cents says:

And she didn’t even need to consciously uncouple to remain friends, imagine that!

    • Starkiller says:

Pretty easy to “remain friends” when you don’t even live on the same continent.

  9. Adele Dazeem says:

Agree on all counts. I love her down to earth-ness w kids and family. I know she’s come under fire for not living up to her (career) potential, but there’s a part of me that thinks she really doesn’t care. I never see her being one of those pretentious actors reflecting on her ‘craft,’ and being a blunt idgaf kind of person myself, I respect that. Team Kate!

  10. JudyK says:

What did she do to her face? I didn’t even recognize her.

    • pf says:

I was gonna say the same thing. The pic of her in bed with her son – her face looks all botoxy or something. She’s only a year older than me, and I couldn’t imagine doing anything to my face. But I’m not an actress who has to deal with superficial Hollywood crap. But is she even an actress anymore?

    • KiddVicious says:

Her nose job totally changed the look of her face. I think they made it too pointy.

  11. Mira says:

I think she has her shit together and is kind of cool in the way she never plays the victim.

  12. meh says:

Oh god, that poem is awful. Just awful.

  13. Bananapanda says:

FYI Bing is her grandfather’s name – Bing Russell was on Bonanza and was a character actor and minor league baseball team owner.

There’s a fun doc on Netflix about his foray into baseball and Kurt playing on it called the Battered Bastards of Baseball.
