Jake Gyllenhaal & Tilda Swinton are unrecognizable as they film ‘Okja’ in NY

I just felt like something a little light for a moment. These are photos of Jake Gyllenhaal (seriously) and Tilda Swinton (for real) filming a new movie in New York over the weekend. They are filming Okja, directed by Joon-ho Bong, who also directed an unrecognizable Tilda in Snowpiercer. The plot of Okja is this: “A young girl named Mija risks everything to prevent a powerful, multi-national company from kidnapping her best friend – a massive animal named Okja.” It is being called “adventure, drama, sci-fi” and some are even saying “horror”?

I honestly didn’t even recognize Tilda in these photos, but she’s always doing stuff like this. She loves to be in crazy makeup, wigs, fake teeth and more. I think it was Colin Firth who said something about how most actors secretly love all of that stuff, and most of them love the fact that they play dress-up for a living.

As for Jake… I didn’t recognize him at first, and that was probably the point. Jake’s career is all over the place, isn’t it? Some people really believe he’s one of the great actors of his generation, and some people are like “ugh, Gyllenhaal.” I suspect that Jake just wanted to work with Joon-ho Bong, who is one of the most interesting directors working today.

PS… Remember when Jake Gyllenhaal dumped Taylor Swift over the phone? Haha, I wish Jake would tweet something about the #KimExposedTaylorParty.

I’ve never seen Tilda with makeup on before!

    • KHLBHL says:

She was in Trainwreck as Amy’s boss – she had tons of makeup on then! IIRC, she was in some interview and they asked her about her look and she said she just went into a department store and bought a bunch of stuff.

See this for 2 reasons.. Tilda and Plan B is Producing.. that is all

“Okja” and “Mija”? This sounds suspiciously like a story intended for an actress of a different ethnicity. Hopefully I am wrong because that would now make this woman a two time offender.

    • KHLBHL says:

I still have faith (in the movie, not Tilda Swinton) because the director is Korean and he wrote the script. I think he intends for it to be taking place in multiple countries and be intentionally international (as opposed to whitewashed) and featuring an ensemble cast. There are a few Korean-American/Korean actors in the cast list: Steven Yeun, Choi Woo-sik, Ahn Seo-Hyun, Byeon Hye-bong, Yun Je-mun. But it looks nice and diverse on the whole. Fingers crossed.

    • Aiobhan says:

Technically it would be three time offender. The character she played in “We need to talk about Kevin” is of Armenian descent.

    • Norman Bates' Mother says:

The main character Mija is played by a Korean actress and Okja is not a human. Tilda and Jake’s characters probably belong to this multi-national company from description.

@Aiobhan – why would Tilda playing an Armenian be offensive? Armenians are white and there are pale Armenian women. Is it offensive that i.e. Irish-German Fassbender plays a Polish Jew in X-men or that Redmayne and Vikander played Danish people in The Danish Girl?

The Doctor Strange situation is bad, but there’s no reason to actively look for things to be offended by.

      • Aiobhan says:

@Norman Bates’ Mother. Yes, it is offensive to me because there are several working Danish and Armenian actors who they could have looked at for those roles. I think we need to discuss the difference between being a caucasian and being white. White is a social construct that seems to fluctuate depending on where you are from and in relation to darker skinned people. Irish and Germans who originally immigrated to the US were not considered white. They became white after slavery ended. Irish and Germans were always varying shades of pale but they (relatively speaking) just became white in the US.

Michael Fassbender is playing a character from a comic book who has superpowers. Would it have been nice if they found someone who is a Polish-Jew yes, but that is not the same thing as what Tilda, the casting director, and Lynne Ramsey chose to do for “We Need to Talk about Kevin”.

love Jake even with that tired outfit AND mustache also love Tilda..

  5. Tiny Martian says:

Love it! Jake looks like Geraldo Rivera in these.

  6. Lambda says:

Joon-ho Bong is a genius. Though i think he could’ve reigned in Tilda’s acting in Snowpiercer. I’m excited about this film (also about Chan-wook Park’s Handmaiden).

  7. pikawho? says:

Somehow Jake looks much older than Tilda, lol, she’s truly a shape shifter!

  8. Aiobhan says:

This actually sounds interesting. Despite Chris Evans’ weak performance, I really enjoyed Snowpiercer. The direction and editing were top notch.

I may actually go to the theaters to see this for Jake, Giancarlo, and Steven.

    • KHLBHL says:

I think it’s an exclusive Netflix release. But maybe they will also provide distribution to theaters (like they did for Beasts of No Nation).

  9. Lucy says:

I loved Snowpiercer!! I’m sure this one will be good too.

  10. Jenn4037 says:

Just popping by to verify this isn’t a Swift parody. But man – would Tilda nail it!!

  11. Aulty says:

Oh look, its Taylor Swift and Johnny Depp …
