First trailer for ‘Wonder Woman’ drops at Comic-Con: this looks awesome, right?

WW2

I’m not sure what people were expecting out of the DC Comics’ Comic-Con panel this weekend, but I suspect everyone got much more than they bargained for. Not only did Ben Affleck drop new Justice League footage (CB is covering that in a separate post) but Gal Gadot and the cast of Wonder Woman came out and they dropped their new trailer. And it looks AWESOME. This is the first major comic-book franchise film directed by a woman in this current era of comic-book films. The film is directed by Patty Jenkins, and the core cast is female, with the exception of Chris Pine, who is Wonder Woman’s damsel-in-distress/love interest. But even from the trailer, you can tell that this film is about Wonder Woman/Diana’s journey, and it’s about ladies kicking ass. And it looks AWESOME!!!!

Perhaps the better question would be: what isn’t kick-ass in this trailer? Because everything looks great. The Amazonian women riding into battle on horseback? Awesome. Wonder Woman’s glorious wavy hair of justice? Awesome. The lasso of truth? Awesome. The look at a (somewhat) modern take on Wonder Woman’s costume? Awesome. Wonder Woman blocking machine gun fire with her shield? SO AWESOME.

THR has a good run-down of what happened at the panel discussion – go here to read. Basically, feminism and righteousness. Everyone is so excited for WW now. As they should be!

Everything in this trailer looks awesome! My sister who is 8 years old watched the trailer and already decided to be Wonder Woman for halloween this year.

    • Snazzy says:

Yay! That’s why we need more female characters in all kinds of film, superhero included. To give girls a plethora of role models to choose from 🙂 so excited for your little sister

    • Pat says:

I have to say that all the Amazons’ costumes are pretty great. Hippolya’s and Antiope’s in particular are really appealing and I predict will see a lot of women and girls searching for them for Halloween. Really badass.

    • PrincessMe says:

I’m so excited, this looks really great. I hope this turns out well – especially for Gal.

  2. MrsBPitt says:

Love women kicking ass! But, is anyone else getting sick and tired of all these superhero movies….

    • HellsBells says:

Ordinarily, I’d agree with you re too many superhero movies but this one just feels so, so overdue. I admit my inner 10yr old self squealed with joy at everything in that trailer!

      • claire says:

No kidding! I’m so excited to finally see my childhood superhero come to life!

      • Gardenia says:

Exactly! Superhero movies bore me, but this one I’ll see because it’s so overdue and it looks good. Pleased to see a superheroine who seems to be more than an accessory with perky shiny boobs à la Black Widow.

      • Shelleycon says:

Yesssss!!! It really really does. My inner superhero nerd younger self is v happy. She is also stunning

    • Jen43 says:

I like the super hero movies because they appeal to both my geeky 10 year old son and my eye rolling 14 year old daughter. I won’t spend $40 at the movies to just kill time. Everyone has to be excited about the movie and these usually work for us.

    • V4Real says:

Nope I’m not getting tired of Superhero movies. They have their own genre. Would you say you’re getting tired of all these drama movies or comedy movies.

      • Erinn says:

I’m tired of super hero movies in the same way that I’m tired of the sob-story movies. But I do appreciate a super hero movie done right – and at least this one does seem to be a bit ‘different’ than the bulk of them. But then again- I just generally don’t go watch the sob stories, or most super hero movies, so I basically just remove myself from the situation to begin with lol.

    • lucy2 says:

I’m tired of all the superhero movies – it’s all the studios want to produce. I get why, but it makes it harder for other films to get made. I loved Nolan’s Batman, but beyond that I haven’t been impressed or interested in any of the others.

But…I want to see this particular one A) because it looks awesome B) because I want to support female action stars and C) because if it bombs they will use it as an excuse to not make anymore female superhero movies.

  3. Nicole says:

Looks amazing. DC really took that BvS criticism and turned it around. Suicide Squad, WW and Justice League all look fantastic

    • oliphant says:

totally agree- was not excited at all after BvS but this looks AMAZING!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE the contrast of her armour on those bleak WW1 battlefields.

justice league footage also looks great, they’re all really interesting characters so looking forward to some great team dynamics, wish green lantern was going to be in it though….

    • Kathleen says:

Have you seen the Ultimate edition of Batman v. Superman with the extra footage? I say this because it’s sad but it’s SUCH A BETTER MOVIE. The extra 30 minutes of footage put Superman’s entire storyline in a totally different context. It also showed Lois putting all the pieces together (when all the men were fooled) and showed Lex’s motivation more. I understand that WB was afraid that people wouldn’t watch a 3 hour movie so they cut it down but the edits made to BvS were a death sentence because they were CRITICAL things that should have NEVER been cut from the movie. It’s a way better movie with the extra footage. So if they’ve learned anything from the BvS debacle, I hope it’s to hire better editors.

      • NIcole says:

I’ve heard the extended cut was way better from friends. I may sit down and watch it at some point but yea I found the movie not engaging at all besides WW and most Batman scenes.

      • Bettyrose says:

We watched B vs S for the first time this weekend and loved it. I don’t get the criticism. It was a good story, plenty of twists, fun characters, and Diana Prince. What’s not to love? I’m excited about WW.

    • Bonzo says:

I agree. I got really excited about WW, JL & SS watching the trailers.

Then I giggled with delight at Jessica Chobot from Nerdist as she flipped out over the WW trailer:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnYEPalx1UU

    • sunny says:

Yes, this! The upcoming DC films look really strong(though it is hard to trust Justice League because Snyder has always been good at cutting trailers).

I am super excited for Wonder Woman and feel like they have totally nailed the casting. Can’t wait!

  4. freebunny says:

    Her costum looks very plastic.

  5. manda says:

It does look awesome! She is going to kick a lot of ass, all while wearing fairly significant wedge heels. Very excited!

  6. MP says:

This looks much more interesting than Doctor Strange! Proper action and not just waving hands and bending buildings.

  7. Locke Lamora says:

It does look good. And Gal looks good, which is surprising, because she was painfully bad in the Fast and Furious movies. Like, incredibly bad. Maybe she got acting lessons.

  8. kittenhotel says:

WW trailer is everything I thought it would be: boring, explosives, and repetitive

    • Diana says:

People on twitter yelled at me yesterday for not being a “good feminist” ’cause I said the trailer was “meh”.

      • Bettyrose says:

        Diana,
I feel ya. I got called out yesterday for suggesting comic nerds come from a wide swath of society (rather than being primarily young, white, and low income, as someone else felt strongly was the case).

    • tracking says:

+2 I really wanted to be excited, but now am not based on the trailer.

    • Val says:

Same, I zone out pretty fast. Looks like any superhero movie with 10% dialogue/story and 90% explosions and visual effects.

  9. INeedANap says:

    I AM SO HYPED!

I was skeptical about Gal Gadot for the role, and I wish she would have bulked up, but she looks and sounds great in this. On a separate note, Chris Pine was well cast in this role. Not only is he a great character actor (he’s not really a leading man), he is also a feminist so you can bet he won’t step in it while on the promo trail.

    • Naya says:

Agreed. I hate that her body was obviously designed for the male gaze. She couldnt bulk up because then the boys wouldnt you-know-what to her image. And if theres one thing a female action hero must be, its to provide you-know-what material for the boys. Still, she does have screen presence and thats a relief. I feel nothing for the DC Chris but maybe that will change after the film.

      • Pablo says:

Yeah because it’s not like male superheroes have perfect bodies to attract females…

It’s ridiculous to see women who drool over Jackman or Bale or Hermsworth naked chest cry sexism because a superheroine looks hot.

      • Naya says:

Dont be ridiculous. Wolverine, Batman and Thor are built to kick ass. When their rivals are intimidated, you know why. Every single one of the superhero men was hot before he bulked up but he was still required to “look the part”. They have all spoken about how much muscle weight they were required to gain by the studio.

Meanwhile, this woman who is supposed to be a hard core warrior looks like she would snap in two if she twirled that lasso too hard. She has almost no muscle definition and definitely no bulk. Its ridiculous because this is not the body of a hardened warrior. But gotta keep the boys fapping…

      • Val says:

        Completely agree Naya…

      • detritus says:

@Pablo, to attract what type of females? Female cats? Female fruit flies? Female humans?

You are either being purposefully obtuse, or you are actually ignorant, if you fail to recognise the difference between what Naya described, and what you described.

@Naya, I didn’t comment earlier, but this is my issue too. I hate that a super athletic, giantess of a woman is played by this tiny waif that looks like she has been existing on carrots and water for the last year.
I want my amazons to look like amazons. I want Brienne of Tarth or anyone who looks tougher than the average VS model. This wonder woman is very pretty but she is not physically imposing.

  10. paolanqar says:

I can’t wait to watch. I hate super hero stuff but this is awesome.

  11. Retty says:

Super good. Just showed trailer to my 6yo daughter- she wants to watch it next week!

  12. pikawho? says:

I wish Gal Godot was more charismatic and had a more appropriate athletic build instead of the fresh from a bathroom stall at fashion week look ,but I’ll probably end up seeing this.

I want a female superhero film to do well so Hollywood can stop its bullshit.

    • SKF says:

I initially felt the same way, but she is actually very athletic in a slim way. She’s been doing all sorts of martial arts training, I’ve seen photos of her flexing some impressive biceps. Also she was a dancer for 12 years and raised by a gymnastics instructor (lean muscle can still be strong) and she was in the IDF for two years as a combat instructor and actually knows how to fight hand-to-hand and use weapons. She’s won me over! Now if only she could ditch the wedge heels… If Xena can wear flat boots and rock it (and manage to be a feminist, lesbian and straight-bro-sex symbol all at the same time) then WW can too.

    • MyHiddles says:

I feel the same way. I’m offended that they chose this uber-skinny nothing to be an Amazon. Its too unrealistic for me to get into.

  13. Karen says:

I think the visuals and fight scenes look awesome, and they hired a lot of great actors. But I am still not convinced she has great range. She was one note, one expression in BvS, and I still only see the same here too. I’ll be cautiously optimistic.

  14. crackfox says:

I gagged when she had the sword on the back of her gown! I’m excited to see it. My only complaint is I wish she had full armor. I don’t even care if they made the armor really form fitting. Going to war with your legs exposed just ain’t practical, girl.

    • paolanqar says:

Well…. she is super strong and super resilient. And she can heal really fast.. so I guess she doesn’t need a full-on armour!
      She is awesome.

      • Naya says:

She is awesome but Superman and Thor are godlike too and they dont run around in itsy bitsy skirts or upper body armour that looks suspiciously like a corset.

      • V4Real says:

Like some said it’s her traditional style of dress. It always has been. BTW Xena fought with her legs exposed.

      • Pablo says:

She is from an ancient greek island and ancient greek warriors wore dresses like that (see: Troy)

      • Naya says:

Did they also wear strapless metalic corsets with push up bra qualities, Pablo?

We’ll have to live with this depiction because thats life. And we need to show up to the movie or you know the studios will forever claim that female super heroes dont sell. But that doesnt mean we wont call out the inherent bs.

      • Bettyrose says:

Naya, I traveled back in time to check, and I can confirm that in Ancient Greece, women wore metallic bustiers, platform boots, and head bands with superhero logos.

    • HH says:

That’s the traditional costume, so I’m excited. They managed to live up to it, without making it look too “cartoonish/campy.” Also, as pointed out above, due to her super powers, she doesn’t need armor. I find this to be more bada** actually. Because the outfit isn’t necessarily used in a “sexpot” way, but also to show her strength, IMO. Like, Batman *needs* his bulletproof suit; so does The Flash (in the JL trailer). I mean, he’s fast, but not bulletproof (in the event he doesn’t see it coming). I do, however, wish Gal Gadot had a slightly more muscular build. Maybe it will be evidenced more in the movie.

    • Mike says:

Her armor is meant to replicate the ancient Greeks. This was how they fought. She is 3 thousand years old

  15. JenB says:

I thought it looked really good! I was surprised that it was set in the WWI era, and actually think that’s an interesting element because it’s not a time period we see as often in films. For the record I love Linda Carter and despite being a bit attached to her classic black hair and blue eyes look I was impressed with the new Wonder Woman.

    • Mia4s says:

The WWI period feels perfect and I agree, a bit unique. She gets her first exposure to our world during one of the most absurd wastes of human life that “man” has taken part in. There was no Nazi threat to be fought, the whole war was ridiculous. Trench warfare plus machine guns plus old men trying to fight a war with antiquated methods that literally wiped out an entire generation of young men. If I were her I wouldn’t be too keen on our world either!

      • HH says:

Yes that’s what I was thinking. This is her origin story, which by extension means it’s a “prequel” to BvS. So, we need to see when she lost faith in humanity and how that happened. WWI is the tragedy that would do so.

  16. Adrien says:

Trailer looks great. Gal’s beauty is distracting. Her slim physique is ok. You can see her back is well toned. I mean she’s from Israel, she has actual military combat training.

  17. Mia4s says:

This trailer made me ridiculously happy. Cannot wait.

A bit sad that I was so pleased and surprised to see them pass the Bechdal test twice in the trailer. 😉

  18. Elisa the I. says:

Trailer looks great! I was worried that they would mess this up. Hope this paves the way for more female-lead superhero movies!

  19. TeamAwesome says:

YAASSSS!!! I hope this makes so. much. money.

  20. Jess says:

    I cannot wait!!

  21. Lucy says:

Miss Gadot, you have arrived. Absolutely looking forward to it!!!

  22. Snazzy says:

I loved the secretary=slavery one liner at the end 🙂
This movie is going to be so cool, can’t wait to see it!

  23. alice says:

Surprised nobody is talking how badass is that shoot of Robin Wright’s General Antiope flying over the German soldiers with bow and arrow and then leading the Amazons charge on horseback. Also the shoot when she stabs someone with a bunch of arrows. That’s the movie I want to watch. Amazing!

That’s the core of the Wonder Woman story and I’m sad the trailer gives little screentime to that and too much to Chris Pine and his bland acting. I get it that maybe Jenkins fell in love with Pine and maybe she’s scared of a similar to Ghostbusters’s misogynist reaction so then she included too much of Pine, but that makes him look like the movie is about him. damn it even the opening scene is his vanilla face!

  24. CornyBlue says:

    I am so hype!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. Georgia says:

The trailer is AMAZING! I can’t wait to see this

  26. Miss M says:

I want to see this movie. Go Gal!

  27. FingerBinger says:

    No thanks. I was underwhelmed.

  28. Beckysuz says:

This looks awesomesauce!! I for one will be there on opening day with my 11 yo old daughter. I hope the movie lives up to the trailer. And I hope this (and the black panther) makes loads of cash so the old men in charge of Hollywood are forced to think out of the (white male) box, and start considering that women and POC want to see themselves reflected on screen too, even in superhero movies

  29. Cee says:

Yay for representation! If only we could see more non white actors in great roles…
I was at Disney World in March and I saw so many Reys I was a bit jealous I could not dress up, too. As someone who was told as a young girl I could not be a Mutant teenage ninja turtle or a Ghostbuster or a Jedi, I’m looking forward telling my daughters the exact opposite.

  30. Singtress says:

I watched it right after seeing Star Trek, so all I could think is “let the Captain Kirk / Wonder Woman crossover fanfics begin.”

  31. Grant says:

Phenomenal. Just phenomenal. So excited for this movie!

  32. I Choose Me says:

LOVED the trailer. I am so pumped for this movie.

  33. Mary says:

So excited! My 11 year old is already asking to find the armour for her Halloween costume. Just wish I would have kept my Wonder Woman underoos! Not that they’d fit!

  34. Elle says:

I’m tentatively optimistic that DC might finally have a good movie on its hands. And anything that involves Robin Wright being a bad ass has to be worth at least a watch, right?

So I like Chris Pine and think he’s a good actor, but has he had some weird plastic surgery? Botox that didn’t settle before filming began? I know he had major trouble with acne as a teen, but something about his face distracted me throughout the trailer. He just looks off.

    • Courtney says:

I saw Star Trek Beyond yesterday and he looked a bit different in that as well. I assumed he’s perhaps not aging very well.

  35. sauvage says:

How absurd is it that this trailer made me cry?

It’s f***ing AWESOME!! It has everything! There’s a very strong female lead and a male lead, willing and ready to support and protect (in the unlikely case she needs it) said very strong woman, there’s action and an awesome villain (I LOVE Danny Huston as an actor!), and – did I say AWESOME! already?

I think Gal Gadot is right. This has been a long time coming. This may be a popcorn movie; it is also an important moment somehow.

  36. stinky says:

she reminds me of ‘Francois’ from “The Beach”
love the soundtrack to this film…
    it looks scary!

  37. Ari says:

Every time i hear the soundtrack i tear up im so excited!

  38. Shockadelica81 says:

    👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👍🏾

  39. Grant says:

This trailer makes me so very happy. I’m even enjoying the energy and magnetism that Gal is throwing into the role–it seems like she’s making Diana her own. This movie looks like the perfect blend of Captain America and Thor, with lots of girl power thrown in for good measure. I think this is the most excited I’ve ever been for a comic book movie. It’s amazing that Diana is finally, FINALLY getting her moment in the sun.

  40. Cat87 says:

Maybe Marvel should take a note from DC comics and have more faith in female super heros. I am so disappointed how Marvel treated Storm in the Xman series. In the comics she was a bad ass butt kicking ain’t taking no jive from no one female hero. I wanted that so bad and Marvel fell short to do my female super hero some justice. So I hope DC blows WW out of the water and remind Marvel that female super heros should never be treated lessor.

    • teacakes says:

The X-men movies were made by Fox, not Marvel

And since Marvel has just cast Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, we’ll be getting our female-led Marvel superhero film, soon enough.

  41. aquarius64 says:

The lasso work looks good in the trailer but there is no Bullets and Bracelets, another one of Wonder Woman’s abilities. The shield used to deflect the bullets looks like a cheat (and a move Xena and Lady Sif would do). No Invisible Jet, and most likely no tiara as a boomerang or transformation spin. It does not feel like a Wonder Woman movie.
