CW stakes the heart of Vampire Diaries fans with cancellation announcement

Sorry, Vampire Diaries fans, but the long-running series is coming to an end after it’s next season. I can’t believe the show had been on for seven seasons already. It even had a spin-off with The Originals.

The announcement that the upcoming eighth season would mark the end of the series’ run was made on Saturday at San Diego Comic Con, during the CW Network’s drama panel. During the panel, executive producers Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson, who were present along with actors Ian Somerhalder, Michael Malarkey, Candice King and Matt Davis, showed a video featuring the cast recollecting on their time on the show and thanking fans for their loyalty. In the video, star Paul Wesley said that being cast in the show had “changed the trajectory of my life, to say the very least.” Ian Somerhalder added that “The sun, the moon and stars aligned for me one day in March when I got the official call that I had been cast in this very special role.” You can check out the video in its entirety below:

As for the return of Nina Dobrev’s character, Elena, Julie Plec told the panel that she hoped to see the character return, adding:

It’s what she and I kind of agreed on when she decided to move on, and it’s what I’ve got in my head. Obviously things can change throughout time, if the show goes on longer than we expect it to, or if we all collectively decide it would be fun to bring her back earlier, and she wanted to. I’m sticking with my side of the plan, which is to bring her back at the very end.

The final season, which producers promise will be an “epic ride,” premieres the first of its 16 episodes on the CW on October 21.

I never watched Vampire Diaries, but it’s filmed in my hometown of Atlanta, and I know a lot of people who have worked on it (including my man, Kevin.) I kind of think America’s love affair with vampires is coming to an end. Will you miss Vampire Diaries?

I used to love the show but I lost interest after most of my favorite characters moved to The Originals and they assasinated the character of the remaining ones on TVD (looking at you Stefan and Caroline).

I won’t miss it but I do hope Bamon is endgame (and that they move Caroline to The Originals so we can finally get Klaroline there!)

I was always a Caroline Forbes stan, not gonna lie, but the show has gotten so bad in the last few years.

I wonder if there has ever been a show that shot itself so completely in its own foot? Building up Klaroline for years only to do a spinoff separating them? IIRC, they were also quite salty towards the fans at that time too, or did I imagine that?

Anyway, seasons 1-4 were a pleasure to watch – cheesy at times, but fast paced and entertaining.

      • Caitiecait says:

You did not imagine, they built Klaroline up for 2 seasons and then separated them. And then got mad at the fans for wanting what the show was teasing. They basically told fans to get over it and are shocked when the spin off never really took off.

      • Lurker says:

Yeah, I thought that at the time. And I know there are bad apples in every fandom, so I’d believe that there were mean hashtags flying around and stuff, but the show runners and some actors seemed to imply that KCers were all bullies, and they weren’t really welcome to be fans anymore.

Vampire Diaries was my first proper fandom (the gateway drug to comics and sci-fi!) and I felt so let down by it. Julie Pleck mishandled the whole affair, tbh. The show should never have gotten a spinoff, it simply did not merit it.

    • sherry says:

Thank you! The last 3 seasons have left me feeling meh about the show. Caroline and Stephan? Really? Caroline and Klaus were complex and HOT! Elena should have always been with Stephan and Damon and Bonnie would be a great couple!

      • LannisterForever says:

You, my friend, have perfect taste in ships! Klaroline, Stelena and Bamon is where it’s at and I hate the feeling I have that they’re gonna make Delena endgame anyways…

  2. Ana says:

Oh well. I never got back to watching after Nina left. I think this doesn’t surprise anyone, it was certain that without her it would soon fail.

Used to love the show, but the stories they presented after season 4 were horrible. Whether it was people’s ego or lack of talent behind such inconsistencies in plots idk. It’s sad that it went down so epically bad. Glad the actors can move on.

  4. Talie says:

I watched for years, but checked out this past season. The big mistake they made was killing Katherine instead of Elena, who became the fan favorite. The show went in circles too much.

  5. pretty says:

this show is up there with Pretty little liars for being wayyyy past it’s time. jesus. I stopped watching TVD after the originals left after season 4 , i stopped watching pretty little liars after season 4 as well because both shows’ season 5 were getting so cringe-worthy and forced.

  6. OSTONE says:

I used to love TVD, even went to Covington to see the sets (Represent ATL!) and I tuned out after mid season 6. Agreed about PLL, it’s a hate watch at this point.

  7. Merritt says:

I forgot this show was still on. The first few seasons of the show were good but then it became tedious to watch.

  8. Julie says:

This show was so good in it’s first couple of seasons. The last few seasons have been terrible, but I watched because I love the characters.

  9. Shannon says:

I loved the first couple of seasons, but I couldn’t deal with all of the “loopholes” in the plots. I know it’s fantasy, but really, how many times can something be brought back to life? It just got ridiculous.

  10. Snazzy says:

I must live in a box, because I didn’t realise it was still on TV 😛

  11. Flower says:

I loved the show until they separated Klaus and Caroline when they made the spin off, The Originals. They could have really made something work with them.

  12. Lucy says:

I’ve never watched the show, but I find Paul Wesley to be absolutely adorable, and I don’t understand why he doesn’t get as much attention as Ian S. That’s just looks-wise, of course. Can he act?

    • mp says:

I remember Paul Wesley from Everwood (lol i know!), and wow has he lost weight, he doesn’t look right to me, he used to be a bigger guy…should we be worried?

  13. InsertNameHere says:

I think the show took a wrong turn when Nina and Ian broke up. It showed in the chemistry and in the storylines. I loved the series for years, and I’ll probably tune in for this last one, but only because when I loved TVD, I REALLY loved it.

  14. Linn says:

I stopped watching “Vampire Diaries” a couple of seasons ago but I enjoy “The Originals”.

Did they say anything about the show being cancelled after next season as well. Unfortunately a mid-season start for the next season isn’t a good sign.

If it doesn’t gets cancelled, I hope they don’t bring half the Vampire Diaries cast over.
Caroline would have been nice to see in New Orleans before they ruined her on the VDs but now I don’t think I would want her to come over. And please no Damon or Elena.

  15. Solo says:

I still haven’t watched Season 6 all the way. It’s definitely not the same show as when it started, but I’ll hang in there to finish.

I found myself enjoying The Originals even more. Hopefully that one continues even though I think it’s a mid-season replacement right now.

  16. I Choose Me says:

Not surprised. Kat Graham is leaving the show. As is Somerhalder. That’s more than two thirds of their lead cast. Nothing left to do but cancel. Declining ratings definitely had something to do with it. I personally haven’t tuned in since the show devolved in constant doppelganger nonsense. Not to mention the sketchy storylines.

Oh and my ships are: Stefan and Katharine. Klaus and Caroline. Damon and Bonnie. Elena can go jump off a pier.

    • Mimz, says:

Of all comments, this is the one I would have written, word by word. I love the show, will watch it to the very end, and then the storyline suffered after the big breakup and elena leaving and then moving it to Fridays, it was a done deal…
Elena can stay underwater or wherever for all I care, I thought that after she left the show took an interesting turn, and I liked that they didn’t kill her off. I hope Caroline moves to New Orleans and gets on with Klaus but I think she’s too sweet for that dark world…
I hope they do guest appearances at The Originals. I LOVE that show. So much better than TVD. And don’t even get me started on all the hot men in there. Klaus, Elijah, MARCEL. Ok I’m gonna stop.

      *sort of ashamed*

  17. lexx says:

Bonnie Bennett you deserved more that you got. I hope Kat Graham gets opportunities to shine after the show ends.

    • Mimz, says:

I know.. she’s been a martyr and cruelly underused in that show. dead a million times, betrayed a million times, underestimated a gazillion, stripped of her powers.. everything. But that being said, I like her a lot, but I think she needs a better agent. She can’t seem to get it right with the movies and music she makes. It’s like she’s a little lost. I wish her well.

  18. Eden75 says:

I had a good chuckle over this this morning. Jenson Ackles said at a convention once that if Supernatural outlasted TVD, TVD should end with the boys coming to town. THAT series finale I would totally watch. I checked out of TVD after season 4, that was enough for me.
