Michael Fassbender compared Alicia Vikander to Lupita Nyong’o in Vanity Fair

vikander VF

Alicia Vikander covers the September issue of Vanity Fair. I was like, “did she get the cover just for Jason Bourne?” No. She got it for The Light Between Oceans, and as such, her big Vanity Fair debut comes with lots and lots of references to her TLBO costar and off-screen lover Michael Fassbender. Even in the first paragraph of the cover story, we find out that part of the interview took place over Skype, as Vikander was visiting Fassbender in Australia. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:

How far she’s come so fast: “Hollywood was like a rumor. I and my mum, we’d set the alarm to two A.M. to watch the Oscars, and it was like a window onto another universe. And then to have her there next to me [at the Oscars] this year. We were just cursing in Swedish. . . . It’s been pretty f–king . . . Wow.”

Her years spent in ballet: “My image of myself was not the best. Being in ballet school and being in leotards in front of a mirror I don’t know how many hours a day was quite tough.”

Living in a London flat with Icona Pop & Tove Lo. “It was the dirtiest bachelorette pad you’ve ever seen,” Vikander says. The four girls shared two beds and all their clothes, which they kept in a pile on the floor. She auditioned, unsuccessfully, for Snow White and the Huntsman and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. She made 15 “self-tapes” for various American television pilots and got completely ignored. “I didn’t even get a ‘No,’ ” she says—her first taste of Hollywood.

A story from Fassbender: Vikander, Fassbender, and a handful of crew were going to actually live at the lighthouse for the next month during filming. Fassbender was reluctant, thinking, “Is that necessary?” But Vikander didn’t question it. “She doesn’t take anything for granted,” says Fassbender. “With a lot of these actresses coming out, there’s this bravery that you don’t see so much in male actors. . . . I noticed this as well with Lupita [Nyong’o] in 12 Years a Slave—this focus and understanding that there’s an opportunity given to you and you grab it.” Vikander’s determination to get Isabel right inspired Fassbender, an actor who hardly needs improvement, to up his game. “She doesn’t mind taking a character she’s playing to an ugly place. Her level of commitment made me focus and make sure I was as committed.”

Vikander on working with Fassbender: “He was very sweet at letting me in. . . . He was like, ‘Can you please give me a note? What do you think I should do?’ It was such a sweet thing to kind of let me in.” Even Fassbender, who’s abjectly reluctant to speak about his personal relationships, admits, “These things of course sort of spill through to what you’re doing.”

Hollywood gossip/media: “The gossip press is so big out here. There’s an urge to find that one thing that you say that can make a headline. It’s tough because I don’t want to be reserved, or holding back, or to not be myself.” It seems she’s speaking from personal experience, so I ask if there have been any stories out there in the press that she regrets. She’s about to answer when, as if on cue, a junior publicist who has been listening in loudly interrupts. “Can we skip the question and wrap it up real quick?”

[From Vanity Fair]

I think Fassbender’s comparison of Vikander to Lupita Nyong’o is particularly fascinating because there were a lot of rumors that Fassy and Lupita also had an on-set romance (which reportedly burned out pretty quickly). And Lupita became the It Girl that year too! That’s the power of Fassbender, I guess. Bang him for a few months and suddenly you become an It Girl. As for the rest of it… I think Vikander comes across as fine here. I do feel like there’s been a shift in how she speaks to media outlets in the past few months, and you can feel that her guard is up more often. Then again, I do think there’s something rather tightly wound about her anyway.

There’s something about Michael Fassbender… My God… If I ever met that man in person, you best believe I’ll be going to hell. That man CAN GET IT, in as many inappropriate ways as he wants.

    • Seraphina says:

I share those same exact thoughts. Sigh.

    • Lama Bean says:

Sigh. Here’s to hoping he doesn’t have terrible breath. That is a concern of mine with him since he smokes. Would destroy the whole fantasy.

  2. Roxane says:

The photoshoot is gorgeous, in my opinion it’s one of her best with the Sunday Time cover.

  3. MP says:

If I could just see another expression on her face I would be happy.

    • Joanie says:

Seconded, MP. She almost out me to sleep with her performance in Jason Bourne. One facial expression for the entire film.

      • seesittellsit says:

@Joanie – I thought she was very good in The Danish Girl – yeah, I know she campaigned her feet off for the Oscar, but still, she was good. I thought she was very good in Ex Machina, a film I thought deserved more attention.

      • MP says:

I saw Ex Machina and wasn’t impressed. But then again the whole movie was over hyped in my opinion. Only the last 15 minutes were good.
Why is the only way to play android/robots to walk slowly and the stop, tilt your head and look at people inquisitively? Argh!

      • manta says:

I’ve enjoyed her performances in A royal affair and Anna Karenina. If you wanna talk about a performance putting you to sleep that would be Knightley and Taylor-Johson in that film. Vikander portrayed a charming Kitty and the pairing with Gleeson was the saving grace of the movie.
I saw her in an aussie heist picture with Mc Gregor where she played a russian prostitute if I remember correctly.Something more energetic for her. Maybe I just caught her good turns, but she definitely seems more than one note to me. (Haven’t seen Bourne nor The danish gir thoughl).

    • Blackcat says:

      @MP
Looks like she’s trying to squeeze one out!

      • MP says:

        Lol!
Then she needs to change her diet because she has that look in 90% of the pictures I’ve seen of her.

  4. littlemissnaughty says:

Love this: “…this focus and understanding that there’s an opportunity given to you and you grab it.” Yes, dude, because they’re not going to get 12 opportunities if they screw up or the movie tanks. They’re not Liam Hemsworth/Zac Efron/*insert random mediocre male actor here*.

Also, junior publicist? LMAO Little bit of shade never hurt anyone. I do wish she’d ansered that question.

    • Roxane says:

Exactly, The Hemsworth brothers are the perfect example. Bland, Blah and Meh.

      • NIcole says:

I agree. At least chris is surprisingly funny and has decent comedic timing. Liam has zero onscreen presence as evidence by every movie he leads bombs hard.

  5. Goneblank says:

Hmmm…I reckon Lupita became an It girl because she’s massively talented and was pretty brilliant in 12 Years… Not sure Michael Fassbenders allegedly magical penis had much to do with it.

    • lobbit says:

The implication that (allegedly) banging Fassbender catapulted Lupita to “It Girl” status is pretty offensive tbh.

    • Aisling says:

Agreed. I know it was meant to be a joke but I always cringe a bit when I read this type of sexist stuff in articles about actresses.
Besides, if Fassbender’s penis is so magical, where’s Zoe Kravitz’s Oscar? Was his penis on the fritz when he was with her?

  6. Keaton says:

I like her shameless ambition. I bet most successful actors are just as ambitious but they play it down. She doesn’t.

    • Carol says:

Me too. But she does it in a graceful way which is pretty hard to do I think.

    • Snappyfish says:

As I have said before, I really like this girl. (& am jealous of Fassy but then who isn’t?) I like that she goes for what she wants & admits it.

  7. Moon says:

The trailer for the movie looks awful and cringeworthy, and I love Derek cianfrance’s work. Looks like a complete cry fest

  8. mary s says:

the shoot is very pretty. But I think they photoshopped something with her knee– the one she’s got her hand resting on– because it looks really strange. Creepy, even.
Edit to add: not creepy ugly but creepy it looks bent to the side.

  9. BendyWindy says:

Finding out that she did serious ballet makes a lot of sense to me. Most of the dancers turned actresses have something cold about them. See also: Zoe Saldana.

    • Roxane says:

The ballet world is quiet austere, I think.

    • CornyBlue says:

Even Charlize Theron. Which makes me think she will probably be OK in the Tomb Raider franchise. Ballerinas are so damn strong.

    • teacakes says:

It’s something about the way they carry themselves – that poise can come across as remoteness, especially in contemporary Hollywood where the memo is to look ‘relatable’ and ‘friendly’ for image purposes. Relatable goofiness is more valued than grace.

It’s the same with Summer Glau – lovely woman, really warm and charming with fans irl but still rather reserved if you only observe her body language in pictures (she was a professional ballerina who only quit when she was twenty).

      • Alicat1822 says:

Absolutely agree. Ballet requires a level of hyper-awareness because you have to have total control and discipline over your body. I think most dancers, especially former professionals, always retain that in their physical makeup. I danced for years, never at the pro level, but enough to understand where she’s coming from when she speaks to her issues with body image. She is a beautiful woman and I think her best years are ahead of her-acting wise. She’ll be able to show more of her personality. There is a more quirky and self-depreciating side to her that may be lurking underneath all of her Swedish reseserve. She’s not at all “extra” in the manner of some Hollywood stars on the rise. I find that refreshing.

  10. I Choose Me says:

^That’s the power of Fassbender, I guess. Bang him for a few months and suddenly you become an It Girl.

Um, I love Fassy, and i’m going to assume that comment was tongue in cheek because otherwise, NOPE.

I mean I’m not going to pretend that who you date in Hollywood and form connections with can’t have an impact on your career or give it a boost per se. But i’m really uncomfortable attributing the success of either woman to Fassbender. ESP., since in the case of Lupita it WAS a rumor.

Fassbender gains even more admiration from me for this comment, “With a lot of these actresses coming out, there’s this bravery that you don’t see so much in male actors. . . . I noticed this as well with Lupita [Nyong’o] in 12 Years a Slave—this focus and understanding that there’s an opportunity given to you and you grab it.”

He for one doesn’t think that these ladies made it on anything but their own merit.

    • Zapp Brannigan says:

I always laugh at the theory that she is with him for the pr and career boost because really is Fassbender opening big movies on the power of his name alone? If he can’t do that for himself how is he doing it for anyone else.

      • I Choose Me says:

Right. He’s a fantastic, multi-faceted actor but he assuredly does not have leading man status or is a household name.

    • Sixer says:

I thought it made him (and her) sound good, that bit!

She’s got agency. She believes in it. This is A GOOD THING.

He’s not scared of a woman with agency. In fact, he’s actively attracted by it. This is A GOOD THING.

I’m always in the minority on the topic of Vikander but I really bloody like her.

      • CornyBlue says:

You are definitely not in the minority. Everyone I know in the real world bloody love her. Even other nerdier sites.

      • Adele Dazeem says:

I like her too. I like her look, her choices, her strategy. Nothing wrong with strategy, men do it all the time.

      • SugarMalone says:

I like her a lot too. And I agree that you’re probably only in the minority on this site. I’ve yet to meet anyone in the real world who isn’t extremely impressed by her or her performances.

      • SusanneToo says:

Nope, you’re not in the minority. She’s become one of my favorite actresses in the last couple of years and I’ve gone back and watched everything from A Royal Affair up through Bourne. I’ve liked her in everything. Also, she’s loose, funny and charming in her talk show appearances. Yeah, I’m a fan.

      • Bonzo says:

I’m in that group too. I like Alicia’s personality as well as her acting. Fassy too. And I like them together.

        #TeamFassyKander

    • CornyBlue says:

Last year a report came out that putting Fassbender’s name in posters actually reduces the percentage of people willing to see a movie. I have no idea how people think he will successfully help another person grab coins from the public.

  11. Margo S. says:

I agree. She down seem pretty tightly wound. Chill out girl! Relax and enjoy life!

    • Kiki says:

I agree. She needs to lighten up

      • AG-UK says:

Maybe it’s a Nordic thing although I work on a floor with lots most are not so reserved but some are then others look you in the eye then immediately look away or down.

    • popup says:

She’s a type A introverted ex-ballerina who is ambitious and hard-working, and she’s got life by the Fassdong. I think she’s enjoying her life.

  12. TheOtherViv says:

I would be absolutely fine with banging Fassy without any ItGirl status after. Totes low maintenance. I would even share him with Kaiser.

  13. TreadStyle says:

Finally a photo shoot that shows just how pretty she is! Love her styling and outfits throughout! Definitely can tell her interviews are different, like the fact she acknowledges the fact. I still like her.

  14. Melati says:

I admire her determination and ambition to success as well as her honesty to openly admits such. You shall watch her random swede video in the VF site. She was energetic , fun and carefree

  15. Kiki says:

    They deserve each other.

  16. lobbit says:

” there were a lot of rumors that Fassy and Lupita also had an on-set romance (which reportedly burned out pretty quickly). And Lupita became the It Girl that year too! That’s the power of Fassbender, I guess. Bang him for a few months and suddenly you become an It Girl.”

Lupita’s red carpet fashion + the buzz about her performance in 12 Years a Slave got WAY, WAAAAAAAAAAY more traction in the press than those Fassbender rumors, but OK…

  17. Lambda says:

I don’t find anything ‘fascinating’ in Fassbender comparing Vikander and Nyongo. I find his gender awareness remarkable though.
The photos are so contrived, though Alicia looks beautiful.

    • nikko says:

I find it interesting that he even mention Lupita, he could of said the same thing without mentioning any actresses name. Makes me wonder what his mind is on. I just love him to death.

      • Original T.C. says:

Mentioning Lupita is because she and Alicia are both former co-stars who worked hard to get Oscar nominated parts and ended up with best supporting actress awards. They are also strong, confident women who know what they want. Compliments to his last two leading ladies that’s all. It would be more random if he didn’t know Lupita or work with her.

Also Fassbender was dating Nicole Beharie when filming Twelve years a Slave and Lupita was dating a Canadian Rapper at promotion time but hiding him from the press. She was instead doing a mock love fest with Jared Leto. They finally got a pic of Lupita with her bf the morning after the Oscars. He was holding her trophy for her.

  18. karen2 says:

…Ive seen my first Alicia movie…Jason Bourne of course. Either she was cast too young or Tommy LJ was cast too old. Neither was a patch on Chris C & Brian C who absolutely owned those roles. Joan & David were also cool…I have no idea of the motivations of Alicias character…and I wish the Franke character was still around…she was 100 times more interesting than Alicias…that all I got…

    • Roxane says:

In my opinion Jason Bourne is her worst performance, but the whole movie was pretty one dimentional.

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I just saw Jason Bourne……to me it gave her little to work with, and I thought she was good……but there wasn’t really anything she could give more to it. Because the movie was awful in that sense. It felt totally like a money grab, and there really was just nothing to the story.

  19. Guesto says:

Love her, love her ambition, love her refusal to dumb down/people please, love that she’s with my gorgeous Fassbinder, and love so much that he speaks publicly in such respectful and appreciative terms about her.

  20. Jenn4037 says:

I liked her in Danish Girl and ex Machina and even Man from UNCLE. But her “pouty baby pouts while she thinks/reads etc” got old In Jason Bourne and Fifth Estate. She is hit or miss for me. I just really wish they had cast anyone else for Bourne.

  21. Iknowwhatboyslike says:

Personally, I’ve always thought that Fassy wanted a piece of Lupita and she was like, “ahh, no.”

    • Sunglasses aready says:

RUMORS only. There was nothing between Lupita and Fassbender. At the time if memory saves me well, Fassy was having some woman problems/rumors of his own at the time ‘cough’ MG. So, his people pulled out a PR card as needed.
The big story/rumours of the time was Lupita and Leto. Both parties played up to it beautifully and very tongue in cheek.
Why bring up Lupita? His behaviour was rude and disrespectful that he was not even in his seat at the Oscars when his colleague was in the best actress category. When asked about it in some later interview he came up with a ‘piss poor’ excuse.. Arse.

      • LAK says:

Fassy/Lupita rumours were that ‘something’ happened during filming. The Leto/Lupita rumours were during the awards season press roll out which was a full 18mths AFTER the filming.

That said, the Leto/Lupita rumours were ridiculous since it looked very much like a flirtation or playing UP of a flirtation for the mutual benefit of their awards roll out, BUT no one seriously believed anything actually happened between them.

      • J. says:

Fassbender had nothing to do with those rumors. He was even dating Beharie when they were filming. I read rumors about Lupita and Pitt,Lupita and Eijofor,Lupita and Fassbender. It was just silly gossip.

      • MD says:

Fassbender was in the bathroom when Lupita’s name was called. How is that rude or disrespectful? Do you schedule the timing of your nature calls or do you just go when you really have to go?

The Fassbender-Lupita romance (as well as the alleged Leto-Lupita one) were all BS. At the time, Lupita was also reported to have been dating Canadian rapper K’naan. That’s three overlapping relationships going on at once if you’re keeping track. Am I to believe that she is into juggling multiple intimate relationships at once? She doesn’t strike me as that sort of person. Lots of fans were lapping it up though. Silly.

  22. TalkingAbout says:

I wonder why Fassbender compared N’yongs work with her. Truth be told, Lupita is someone who actually studied acting. Who actually prepared herself before asking for jobs.
Not all actors have THIS level of commitment, including Fassbender who dropped acting school. Right?

In addiction, if the world was fair enough, why didn’t Lupita have the same opportunities that Vikander has been having? How many roles did Lupita got after receiving the little gold man?

Racist problem is still a huge issue in America. Absolutely. And equal opportunities does not exist in this world.

Also, I never understood the buzz around Vikander. It must be a media thing, I wonder. However, I do still hold the same way of thinking: you have to know first, then, you’re allowed to criticize someone or something.

That being said, I finally watched one of hers films to see if her acting was so spetacular as I read it here and around.

Honestly? Her acting is pretty much average in Royal Affair. I didn’t see lots of acting chops. Bits. Where is the arc? The moment before? I didn’t see any of that. Without counting the bizzare way she was holding a simple cup of tea.

So, no. She is not Lupita N’yong. And I think it’s an absurd comparison. But Fassbender always says dubious and weird things. That’s why people don’t take him seriously.

Suggestion: why doesn’t she get some acting classes with one of those giants instructors in LA? She can pay for that. She absolutely can.

Thanks for the comment space Celebitchy!
    Have a good week y’all!

    • Moon says:

As a trained actor, I fully agree with your assessment of Alicia’s acting. She’s naturalistic but tends to coast by on that, she doesn’t make choices, squeezes out emotions, her characters have no arc. Her idea (and unfortunately the same goes for many others) or acting is to play up an emotion for the camera. You know who else does that? Jennifer Lawrence, who was great in winter’s bone and has subsequently been playing the same character and emotion in every film since. Talent at being naturalistic can only take you so far. Also agree that it is unfair Lupita hasn’t been offered the same opportunities that Alicia has had, and this is clearly Hollywood racism at work.

      • SusanneToo says:

Thank you, Roxane, and let me just add that MF did not compare their “work”. He said he admired the ability of both Alicia and Lupita to see an opportunity and grab it. That seems to me quite different to comparing their acting styles.

    • Kiki says:

FINALLY. I have been attacked by Vikander Stans by what I was saying for the past two years. This is RACISM AT ITS BEST. Take that AV Fans. @Roxanne Alicia Vikander is part of the problem along with other new up and coming actresses who are so “ambitious” for their dreams

      • Roxane says:

Kiki@ No she isn’t the system is. See I think you pick the wrong person, blame the writers, the productors, the casting choice, but not the person who wants to work in a difficult industry. As for ambition, I don’t see where you going, because it’s seems that in order to fight racism you use a mysoginistic point of you. You’re not gonna solve any problem by asking women to turn down their ambition. It’s not helping anyone, and certainly not Lupita.

      • Kiki says:

you are not understanding me. There is nothing wrong with ambition but sometimes you can always get what you want because you are ambitious. She is part of the problem along with the writers, producers, directors and studio executives who push “Twinkle Toes” down our throat to make us believe that she is “next best thing”. I am an ambitious woman and I don’t play down my ambitions but I am also humble because I didn’t get any major parts in my college plays. All I am saying is just be grateful for everything you have.

      • Roxane says:

Kiki@ The thing is she is already happening. When she was in indie european movies you could say, why i’m seing her everywhere?, but now, after an Oscar, her presence is logical. As for the lack of opportunity for black women, all i’m seing is, don’t point your finger at one person, see the entire system. Again I think your point is valid but with all the talentless women in Hollywood who still have jobs, an European coming from a small country and who succed, as a black I applaud. I don’t need less Alicia Vikander to have more Lupita N’yongo. I need them both.

    • J. says:

You don’t need to put another woman down to praise an actress you obviously like. I’m not blaming Lupita and I like her in 12 Years a Slave but she won without having a filmography. Before winning,Vikander had a Bafta nomination and she was the leading actress in an Oscar nominated film. Vikander had two performances in contention and one of these performance was an android in a small budget British indie, not the Oscar frontrunner. The comparison is absurd,I agree.

    • jane says:

I agree with what you said completely. I didn’t understand or appreciate the comparison because also 12 YAS was Lupita’s first film, AV has been trying for a few years now to happen. I get you and your right. I’m not going back and forth with the obtuse about about race in Hollywood even a little bit. I wish he’d just kept Lupita out of his mouth when it comes to this pr push for this woman and this movie period.

  23. SM says:

Someone should force make up on that girl more often. She looks great here.
I still do not get why she is a thing, I personaly find her dry in everything I saw her in. She was perfect playing a robot though. In any case I like them together, I do not get all the hare she gets for being with him.

  24. perplexed says:

I was surprised to learn she used to be in ballet. I don’t know why — her body is slim, but looks less muscular.

  25. Lady Mimosa says:

I didn’t know he dated Lupita, I know he tried. He loves chocolate.

  26. ladysussex says:

Swedes are famous for their stoicism. Cut her some slack. She’s a bit reserved but at least we don’t have to listen to her talk about Doritos and fart biscuits or whatever JLaw talks about. I’m refreshed by her gracious yet reserved nature. It’s not necessary for everyone to feel she’s down-to-earth for her to be a great actress known for outstanding talent. I’m really happy to see how she’s succeeded in H’wood! Having seen her performances in Danish and Swedish films before she appeared in English speaking films, I’ve long thought of her as an amazing actress. When she first hit H’wood people on CB were like “Who the hell is she??”. Now everyone knows who she is. I thought she was fantastic in Bourne and her character was very interesting (and also full of raw ambition). Good for her!

  27. Laura says:

I guess I don’t see the hype, she’s extremely boring in her interviews, no charisma at all. I agree with others that I’m tired of being force fed the “next big thing” as far as actresses. I have seen a few of her films and she isn’t bad but she isn’t the second coming either. As far as Fassbender comparing her to Lupita, all I’ll say is interesting, I don’t see it but whatever. He’s been a disappointment to me for a minute now, he used to be genuine to me but he’s been bought and paid for at this point.
