Miles Teller is a duck-hunter: ‘I’ve always had a respect for guns’

Ordinarily, I find Miles Teller somewhat attractive. I feel like I’m confessing something incredibly shameful by writing that. It’s true, though. He has an awful personality, but there’s something about his appearance – he’s really tall, he’s got that smirky, confident look, and he normally has great hair – that I find attractive. But these photos? No. Miles went blonde about a month back – he’s filming a movie where he plays a real guy, a blondie, so Miles is trying to be authentic. He was not meant to be a blonde though. It doesn’t work at all and it’s killing whatever vague affection I had for him. Now he looks like a serial killer! Yikes.

Anyway, Miles and Jonah Hill are promoting their film, War Dogs, which I do sort of want to see. They were (type)cast as douchebag bros who gamed the Pentagon bidding system to become major arms dealers. On that note, several media outlets asked Miles and Jonah what they themselves think about gun control and arms dealing. As it turns out, Miles is pretty pro-gun because he’s a hunter. Huh.

“You can see it as a dollar sign, and that’s what these guys did,” Miles Teller told Vulture at the premiere. “Even though these guys are dealing with $300 million contracts, and 100,000 rounds of AK47 ammo, to them it could have been Funyuns; it could have been Doritos. They were able look at it as a way to make money, and we are just exploiting a loophole.” Set in what the film calls “Dick Cheney’s America,” Teller plays Packouz, the workhorse in the partnership, with Jonah Hill as Diveroli, a bro partial to gold jewelry, black tracksuits, and Scarface references.

But the two actors have a different relationship with guns themselves. “I’ve pretty much always felt the same way about guns. I’m not a big fan of them,” Jonah Hill said. “I think the movie is really good at pointing out how ridiculously easy it was for these two guys to become gunrunners the way our government is currently structured in that world.” In terms of gun control, Hill said he’d like to see more oversight and “just way more heavy screening, and making it harder overall for people to get guns.”

Teller is a little more comfortable with guns. “I’ve always had a respect for guns,” he said. “Once I got into a pretty rural town of Florida, it was not uncommon for your buddy’s dad to have a gun rack.” He said that he would be going duck hunting soon. “I’m going hunting this fall in North Dakota, so I’ll have my hunter’s safety [license] and everything. If you are going to use a weapon, just make sure that you’ve passed all the tests.”

[From Vulture]

Some people are anti-hunting across the board, and some people view gun issues solely through the lens of “hunters’ rights.” I’m neither – I grew up in an area with a thriving hunting culture, and I think people should have the right to hunt ducks and deer and whatever, just as long as they follow the rules and get licenses and everything. I also think the hunters’ rights issues should be treated as a separate issue from the larger conversation about gun control and arms dealing because if you’re a hunter and your argument is that you need twenty-five 9MMs and your AK-47 because you’re a hunter, you’re full of s—t.

Oh my god I can’t stand him.

  2. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

I love how he and Jonah Hill look like they’re at two different events. Jonah looks great!

As for Miles…how many dots could I type to give an honest representation of my feelings about him. Hmm, that’s a good question. I’ll ponder that while not letting the devil touch my keyboard.

I have no dots for this man. I’m not even ambivalent.
His douche face is too strong.
Blonde Miles Teller is one step below that Justin Beiber pic with his tongue weirdly out. He is so gross even from someone who likes a touch of the douche.

For my young jackasses I will take Harry Styles and that young man who sings. Elgort something.

  3. Nina says:

    He has only one nostril

  4. Nev says:

    He’s so good looking. Yum.

  5. Melody says:

I think guns are like peni$e$ – they’re good sometimes, not everyone should have one, and they can cause a lot of heartache when access is not properly managed.

  6. Tiffany says:

So Jonah got the memo for premiere dress code. Miles really is a douche.

Even if you follow the rules and get licenses, hunting isn’t necessarily good for the environment. It can be helpful in circumstances where an ecosystem has been compromised by loss of habitat and elimination of natural predation. But, hunters select prey differently than natural predators and can compromise genetic inheritance (“reverse evolution”) in prey species, hunting can disrupt migration. State departments of wildlife manage deer herds for the benefit of hunters, and sometimes large populations of deer can cause car accidents. (In the meantime, my state has no bag limit on coyotes, who prey on fawns and help keep the population low.)

Some, but not all, hunters have a frustrating mindset of the environment as their personal sandbox. Otherwise public interest is low in conservation spaces so the hunting interest usually heard the most.

    • Livvers says:

True enough, but if we are going to gauge the ‘ecosystem services’ of any type of hunting, the duck and waterfowl hunting that Teller appears to favour is ahead of the rest as a more “benign” type of hunting (depending on where anyone stands on hunting, of course). Ducks Unlimited was getting marshes, wetlands, watercourses and upland bird habitat protected decades before environmentalism arose as a viable political movement.

      • Nameless says:

Well, they have to make up for earlier generations of fowl hunters who gave us the non-migrating Canada goose.

  8. Neha says:

Ugh, I hate hunters who kill innocent animals simply for the enjoyment of it. It’s gross.

    • Locke Lamora says:

But it’s not that different from killing domestic animals, is it? My uncle is a hunter, and they care for the animals trough out the year, and the ones they kill always get eaten. If anything, it’s sometimes more humane than the way domestic animals are treated in large farms.

    • Sam says:

I respect a hunter more than I respect people who find hunting “yucky” but will still help themselves to some chicken or beef or pork at dinner (If you’re a vegetarian, please know I am not talking about you!).

Hunters at least have to confront death. They have to be okay with ending something’s life and processing the body. I don’t agree – I couldn’t do it – but I respect that they will do the “dirty” work of getting their own meat. As opposed to the majority of people, who want their beef and chicken and pork, but would flee or cry if they had to witness a slaughter. That’s hypocrisy.

      • Neha says:

I am actually a vegetarian, but, if you’re hunting for food, I can understand it. It’s the killing animals just for enjoyment that disgusts me.

      • Sam says:

I agree. Teller actually doesn’t say whether he eats the ducks or not. He might. That’s why I reserve judgment of him. If he eats his kills, it’s not my cup of tea, but I can at least respect that.

      • Toxic Shock Avenger says:

I agree with the point that whining about hunting while you chomp on a Big Mac or Tyson chicken tenders (or some foie gras) is hypocritical and ignorant. However, I suspect the number of hunters out there who are truly COMPELLED to hunt by a lack of acceptable commercial food sources is SMALL. Using the meat is still better than not using it, but just admit that you want to hunt because you either like killing things, or you get a charge out of the stalking – the “game” of it – and don’t have any problem shooting your opponent.

I’m surrounded by hunters and even the ones with freezers full of venison think nothing of heading over to the steakhouse or the grocery store for pork chops, the next night. They’re not Pa Ingalls stocking the salt house for a harsh winter. They’re “sportsmen” trying to pretend recreational murder is a normal hobby. Own your bloodlust.

    • D says:

There’s a pretty big difference (in my opinion) between subsistence hunting and trophy hunting. I understand being completely against hunting if you’re vegan, but if you eat meat, then it’s hypocritical – you want the food on your plate…as long as someone else does the “dirty work” for you.

    • Katt says:

But Neha was clearly talking about hunters who kill for enjoyment, so why is everyone arguing against a point never made?

  9. Norman Bates' Mother says:

Yeah – I thought he would be.

  10. Zuzus Girl says:

I always get entitled, smug douchebag from him, nothing more. (Very Shia LeBoof(!) if you will.) Both creepy as hell.

  11. Don't kill me I'm French says:

I live in an aera in France where the death by hunt guns is the first eason of violent death.
My aera has the most numerous hunters in France And the mix of alcohol and gun own is fatal

  12. pikawho? says:

Miles Teller coming off as an unlikeable douchebag in an interview is like the sun rising — its an inevitability of nature.

Also, to me he will always look like JLaw before she had her nose and cheek bones sharpened into fine points. The blonde hair just makes it even more uncanny. They should play twins some day.

  13. Cee says:

He looks completely washed out, as if his features had been erased? This is weirding me out.

Also – he’s a douche, but we already knew this.

  14. Dani says:

I really hate him and his shitty smirky personality but like you Kaiser, I find it him sooo sexy in some disgusting way. I would total shame f*ck him. Like 800 times. No questions asked. He’s like attractive in this dirty I want to slap you every time you speak way.
