Could Brad Pitt & Marion Cotillard win any Oscars for WWII-film ‘Allied’?

Earlier this year, Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard were photographed together a lot. They were not having an affair, although that’s what the tabloids wanted everyone to believe. No, they were hard at work on a film called Allied. It used to be called Five Seconds of Silence, but that sounds too much like a boy-band? That was a good call! Although I’m not sure “Allied” is a better name overall, but at least it isn’t cheeseball. The gist of the film is that Brad and Marion play spies – American and French, obvs – that work together to do something something in WWII, only they’re not sure they can trust each other. That’s all I really knew about it going in, that and the idea that some people want this film to have some kind of Oscar campaign. So, here’s the first trailer.

People are already comparing it to Mr. & Mrs. Smith because, duh, two spies end up married to each other. But there were some shots that reminded me so strongly of The English Patient, especially because it looks like they spend time in Northern Africa (Morocco, perhaps? Casablanca????). Like, if MAMS and The English Patient had a baby in World War II, this would be the film. I have to admit that I am a bit intrigued by the idea… two spies fall in love against the backdrop of a world war. They make a baby and he still doesn’t completely trust her? What, is the baby supposed to just be part of her cover? Cover Baby is the new Fake Baby.

Will I see this? Probably, because I enjoy Brad Pitt and films about espionage. Do I think that this is going to be Oscar-baity in the same way that The English Patient was Oscar-baity? Eh. Probably not. Also: the costumes are GORGEOUS. I might see the film just for the costumes.

I’m excited.. and every movie doesn’t always have to be about an Oscar Win.. especially when so many Oscar winners are forgettable. It looks good.. but I love period piece movies.

I just came here to say; I hope Brad Pitt keeps Louisiana on his radar. He did so much to help us after Katrina and God knows we need him now, and all the help we can get. This flood is being called a historic 500 year flood.

Things are awful now. Hundreds and hundreds of square miles of complete devastation. The likes of which we have never seen. It has been since Friday when homes took on water, today is Monday and those homes are STILL under water.

Many of my friends and family have lost their homes, cars, pets, livelyhoods.

God help us. Please pray for us. Please pray the water recedes faster and that we keep this reprieve from the rain.

      • Carmen says:

Prayers sent up. Why can’t the rain ever fall where it’s most needed? California is still dry as a bone.

I like Marion a lot, but I’m kind of burnt out on WWII stories. There have been a lot of novels and movies set at that time in recent years.

    • Esmom says:

I know what you mean. Even with a new twist of angle, I’m kinda burned out too. I’ve had The Nightingale (movie version is sure to be coming) on my bookshelf for months because people have raved about it but I can’t seem to bring myself to read it just for that reason.

In any case, they are one lovely fake family. 🙂

      • joanne says:

read it. i was disappointed the book was set in WW2 but after the first page i was hooked. i couldn’t put it down. i never wanted it to end.

      • Esmom says:

Joanne, thanks. One more vote in favor of it! I will get to it one day. I felt the same way about All the Light We Cannot See. (Not to be confused with The Light Between Oceans.) Did you read that one?

      • Lucy2 says:

The Nightengale is good, but very sad given the circumstances of the story.
All the Light We Cannot See was good too- beautifully written. I think I enjoyed the writing style more than the actual story.
I enjoyed both, but after reading them and a few others, I need a break from the WWII era stuff.

      • KHLBHL says:

Nightingale movie confirmed a few days ago. Michelle Maclaren is directing, so at least it’s exciting that it’s a female director! But yeah. Burned out on WWII stories.

  3. kittTEl says:

Despite how good the movie is I hope it wins nothing.

Enough with the WWII movies. At this point it’s ridiculous

    • Maya says:

Instead of wishing for bad things to happen and for ruining the people’s hard for the movie – you should just stop watching WWII movies.

      • kittTEl says:

        Meh.

Excuse me for wanting different stories to be told.

Sure. Let’s celebrate more of the same!

    • rosalee says:

Just don’t go to see WWII movies if you’re sick of them..no one is ordering you to pay your hard earned money to see a film set during a time of war..on the other hand I have been to the beaches in Normandy..wandered around the battle zones lost in the realization some of my family members returned home against incredible odds and others were left behind. I mystified on how many people have forgotten the contribution of the soldiers of both WWI and WWII – each story is heart rendering. The stories involving everyday citizens who were caught up in war, the hundreds of thousands of children who were relocated..many to never return to their parents. The unnamed heroes..the officers shot by their own men..the silence of the concentration camps…during the 100 anniversary of Beaumont Hamel the majority of people on this site were discussing the clothes and facial expressions of a Duchess rather then the incredible sacrifice of thousands young men during a insane war..but since you’re sick of war stories.

      • lisa says:

i’d rather watch this on an endless loop than a single super hero movie. but that is just me and i dont think they should stop making super hero movies because i dont like them,

    • Dani8 says:

Well a lot of people lost their lives so you could have your freedom of speech to criticize movies. Yeah, no skin off your back. but those pesky movies about history are so annoying to ingrates. Sorry for your suffering.

      • lyka says:

Lol, you should take a breath. The poster’s comment above was lightheartedly troll-y AT WORST. You act like the artists making war movies are the same people who suffered through the consequences of those wars! Hint: they’re not, and you’re not an ingrate if you’re bored of WWII movies.

    • Nik says:

Geez you all really went into attack mode over a such a facetious comment.

      • Dani8 says:

@ lyka – Well it is personal to me. My father was at D-day and received injuries. I admit I’m sensitive to that and overreacted. But say what you want, as your judging on your criteria and I’m judging on mine. Doesn’t make either of us right or wrong. That’s the beauty of freedom of speech. I’m entitled to my opinion too. By the way, I think the use of Lol is incredibly condescending in the context that you used it too.

  4. Maya says:

So existed for this movie – Brad, Marion & Zemerkis together is going to be epic. Don’t think this is Mrs & Mrs Smith like. I think Marion truly is a spy and Brad will kill her in the end.

The tabloids and some people who wants Brad & Angelina to split always link them with their co stars.

It doesn’t matter that they have been together for 11 years and has 6 children. It doesn’t matter they seem to be in love, successful and respects one another.

No for the tabloids they have to be unhappy.

  5. Abby says:

He’s done so many WWII movies! Nevertheless, I’ll see it. I love historical pieces and that is my favorite time period.

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

WWII movies are my kryptonite. Especially spy films. And books.

I think the movie looks really good.

And I think they changed the title from “Five Seconds of Silence” to “Allied” because of Scorcesse’s film with my boo, Liam….I think it’s just called “Silence”. Something about Jesuit priests and “the new world”….which is why he had my man looking like the crypt keeper.

  6. michelle says:

I think it’s a nice change from all the marvel films we have been bombarded with. Don’t think it will be nominated for anything. As for tabloids wanting them to have an affair and him to run off with marion? It’s their business to stir things, for sad people who want other people’s misery to entertain them.

  7. Tash says:

I’m not trying to be negative but I don’t understand how this is possible – Brad’s acting is getting worse as he ages. I’m truly baffled. He almost ruined 12 Years A Slave for me…thank the gods he was in it for like 5 minutes.

  8. Skyblue says:

I love WWll movies…the costumes, the era, the music, the history. So much of it unfathomable in this day and age.

  9. Nev says:

    Love English Patient!!!!!

    • mayamae says:

Me, too! I lent my copy to a co-worker who complained it was too boring and she couldn’t finish it. I was shocked!

      • lucy2 says:

I liked the book too, thought there was some beautiful writing in it. I liked the movie as well, but I haven’t seen it in so long, I wonder how it holds up.

    • Carmen says:

I hated it. It dragged on interminably to the point where I wanted to yell at the screen “Would you hurry up and die already!”

  10. Jade says:

Brad looks endearing carrying that baby. That’s all I’ve got.

  11. manta says:

I don’t know if it will win Oscars but it sure seems to be calibered for them. The not subtle dramatic score underlying every climatic point for you, wwII and an exotic set.
And if you had any doubt, at 40 seconds in the teaser, it’s gone (pushing the bed amid chaos, giving birth under the bombings, maybe in slow motion…)
At least, if Cotillard makes an effort, it will give interesting red carpets.

  12. Luca76 says:

This looks good but as Oscar bait it’s the kind of movie that used to win 10 years ago but while it might be entertaining I don’t see anything Oscar worthy coming out of this.

  13. pikawho? says:

I’m here for that baby! Dem cheeks!

And I hope one day that the demographics of Oscar voters becomes diverse enough that we don’t have to deal with all of these paint by numbers award bait-y WW2 films. The older generation needs to find a new genre to obsess over.

    • Ennie says:

The current generation is obsessed with superheroes. I understand that the 40s- 50s have a sort of glamour due that it was when many people still living today were born. My older brothers are “baby boomers”. These stories also tell a lot of the suffering coming from world wide wars. Seeing what our world is becoming, I like not to forget. I usually avoid dramas, but I make myself watch good movies.

      • pikawho? says:

I get your point (we live in pretty scary times not too dissimilar to the prelude to this war) but I think the message in these films get lost due to over saturation. There have been so many, and so many have been so mediocre and calculated/sanitized for maximum award traction that it lessens the impact. It makes a horrible war just another genre like superheroes or fantasy.

  14. Tara says:

I would love it if they did fall in love while filming this movie. Now that would be a gossip bonanza! But to be honest I don’t think Brad has it anymore. I remember watching video and pics of Diane Kruger trying to get away from him at Cannes. It was pretty gross actually. My guess Marion would do the same. Oh well. It woulda been fun!

  15. Vee says:

I want to recommend a great book by a great writer set during WWII-Gone to Soldiers by Marge Piercy. I am always waiting for what she will do next as she explores and celebrates women.

    • joanie says:

Train in Winter is another one. I just finished it. It was harrowing to say the least what women in concentration camps went through. History keeps repeating itself.

  16. TalkingAbout says:

Brad Pitt is an actor who really deserves an Oscar. Do you remember Seven? What a powerhouse performance! I think it’s his time. Why not?

    • Camille says:

I agree. He is so under rated as an actor.

This movie looks good, I’ll definitely be checking it out.

  17. Tarsha says:

His acting does get better and better as time goes on!

  18. Cali says:

I wish he’d do more comedy. He’s hilarious in those type of roles.

That said, I have a massive girl crush on Marion so I’ll be there for this.

    • tracking says:

+1 It will be interesting to see if he can keep up with her in a dramatic role. This movie will probably rise and fall on whether or not they have good chemistry, which is hard to tell in the teaser. But gorgeous costuming and Marion, I’m there.

  19. Mushymoo says:

Brad issuch a God awful actor, I hope not, but then since when are the Oscars a measure of quality? **coughAnneHathawaycough**

  20. Jasmine says:

I want my baby to have that outfit that cover baby is wearing

  21. A.Key says:

He looks old. Way too old for her.
