On Sunday’s VMA’s, Jimmy Fallon presented the final award for Best Music Video, which went to Beyonce for Formation. To perform his duties, Fallon channeled his inner Ryan Lochte by sporting a silver wig and tracksuit. If Lochte missed Fallon’s impression, he just needs to call good friend Michael Phelps who loved it so much, he recorded it on his phone:
Fallon threw several jabs at Lochte, who was not in attendance, like singing a line from Justin Bieber’s Sorry, referring to having a gun to his head and embellishing several areas of truth.
It was one of the standout moments of the night and Michael Phelps didn’t want to forget it.
As the annual MTV Video Music Awards neared its finale late Sunday night, Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon blazed onto the stage to present the highly anticipated 2016 Video of the Year Award—except his costume had us doing a double take.
Standing before us was not the entertainer of a late-night show, but the bleached blond, tracksuit-clad Olympic gold medalist, Ryan Lochte.
Having sparked controversy at this year’s summer games for initially alleging he and his fellow swimmers had been pulled over in their taxi and robbed with a gun cocked to his head, the swimmer’s behavior turned into Fallon’s punchline.
“Who had the best video of the year? I can’t tell you that. They’re all so great and so talented, I could never choose,” he joked at the mic. “I couldn’t tell you even if there was a gun to my head.”
Fallon then played off of Lochte’s penchant for stretching the truth by claiming he was the mastermind behind all of this year’s nominated videos.
While it was a risky sketch so close to the actual events, the crowd seemed entirely amused by the bit, including Lochte’s fellow teammate and competitor, Phelps. While the most decorated Olympian of all time comfortably took in the show from his seat in the audience alongside fiancé Nicole Johnson, the couple definitely got a kick out of the joke.
I don’t know how risky it was. Maybe a music show is an odd place to lampoon an athlete but being an Olympic year and given how many members of Team USA were in attendance, I think it landed perfectly. Plus, there is always something non-threatening about Fallon. He has an inner safety switch so even when he throws shade, you know it won’t turn ugly.
Phelps finally spoke on the Lochte situation. He told People, “Ryan and I have been teammates forever and it’s always hard to see a friend and a competitor going through a hard time like this – I know what it feels like. I’ve been through it before. Hopefully he can come out of this a better person. I’ve reached out to him a couple times and I think he understands a lot. He will be able to grow from this.” Considering their friendship and his own past, I think Phelps handled that well.
Oh, and anyone who watched the VMAs now knows the secret to Phelps’ Stink Face (PSF). While introducing Future, Phelps confessed that PSF was a result of being in zone while listening to Future’s Stick Talk.
Does anyone else think Fallon looks even better silver-haired?

Silver hair or no, I think he still looks like he’s coming off a bender.
Yeah Jimmy Fallon looks like shite. I think he’s a major alcoholic.
Classy. He sounded like a good teammate/friend, without trying to justify or defend Lotche’s actions.
I kinda think professional athletes can be good friends, then turn that off when they compete.
Yes, I think they share a bond — not just about swimming but now also about public shame and scrutiny — that few people could really understand.
Ummm….aren’t Phelps and Lochte more frenemies?
They were roommates in Rio. I think they’re legit friends at this point.
Yeah, I think they are former frenemies and now friends… not best friends, but they seemed cool with each other at the Olympics (even fist bumped before a race).
What about the other two brothers, Kevin and Frankie(?)?
What?
