Beloved actor Gene Wilder, perhaps best known for his performance as Willy Wonka in the classic children’s film Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory, but also for his hilarious work in 70s comedies like Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, has passed away at his home in Stamford, Connecticut. He was 83 years old. Wilder’s nephew issued a thoughtful and poignant statement about his uncle’s death revealing that he suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and also explaining why they chose not to disclose it to the public until after his passing. Wilder had been married for 25 years to his fourth wife, Karen Boyer. His third wife, comedian Gilda Radner, passed away from ovarian cancer in 1989, with Wilder carrying on her legacy through Gilda’s Club, which raises awareness and support for cancer sufferers with branches through the US. Wilder was diagnosed with non-Hodkin’s lymphoma in 1989. Here’s part of the announcement from Variety.
Gene Wilder, who regularly stole the show in such comedic gems as “The Producers,” “Blazing Saddles,” “Young Frankenstein,” “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” and “Stir Crazy,” died Monday at his home in Stamford, Conn. His nephew Jordan Walker-Pearlman said he died of complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He was 83.
His nephew said in a statement, “We understand for all the emotional and physical challenges this situation presented we have been among the lucky ones — this illness-pirate, unlike in so many cases, never stole his ability to recognize those that were closest to him, nor took command of his central-gentle-life affirming core personality. The decision to wait until this time to disclose his condition wasn’t vanity, but more so that the countless young children that would smile or call out to him “there’s Willy Wonka,” would not have to be then exposed to an adult referencing illness or trouble and causing delight to travel to worry, disappointment or confusion. He simply couldn’t bear the idea of one less smile in the world.
He continued to enjoy art, music, and kissing with his leading lady of the last twenty-five years, Karen. He danced down a church aisle at a wedding as parent of the groom and ring bearer, held countless afternoon movie western marathons and delighted in the the company of beloved ones.”
He had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 1989.
The comic actor, who was twice Oscar nominated, for his role in “The Producers” and for co-penning “Young Frankenstein” with Mel Brooks, usually portrayed a neurotic who veered between total hysteria and dewy-eyed tenderness. “My quiet exterior used to be a mask for hysteria,” he told Time magazine in 1970. “After seven years of analysis, it just became a habit.”
Habit or not, he got a great deal of mileage out of his persona in the 1970s for directors like Mel Brooks and Woody Allen, leading to a few less successful stints behind the camera, the best of which was “The Woman in Red,” co-starring then-wife Gilda Radner. Wilder was devastated by Radner’s death from ovarian cancer in 1989 and worked only intermittently after that. He tried his hand briefly at a sitcom in 1994, “Something Wilder,” and won an Emmy in 2003 for a guest role on “Will & Grace.”
I’m getting teary and I have goosebumps thinking of this wonderful actor and all the joy he brought us. We have lost way too many greats this year. Wilder’s nephew’s statement makes it clear that he was very much loved and surrounded by people who adored and cared for him. Our hearts go out to his friends and family at this difficult time. RIP Gene Wilder, thank you for all the entertainment and laughs.
Scenes from 1980’s Stir Crazy, with the late great Richard Pryor. If you’re feeling very sad, just watch this.
Blazing Saddles, 1974, also a good antidote to the sads.
Young Frankenstein, 1974.

Nooooo!
RIP!!! Charlie and the chocolate factory was one of my favorite childhood movies!!!
In true Waco Kid styleeee, I plan to go off and either play chess or screw. RIP.
“Let’s play chess.”
I introduced my 12 year old nephew to Blazing Saddles only last week. Wilder is wonderful in that film, one of my favourite comedy performances of all time. And, although he would never tell his big burly Northern mates, my husband loves him as Willy Wonker and turns to Jelly when he hears him sing “Come with me”. RIP.
RIP. I absolutely loved Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. Watched that a billion times when I was kid. He was great in Young Frankenstein too. He had such a strong screen presence.
Willy Wonka was a big part of my childhood. It was before u could just watch any movie on demand. We would wait for the night it came on and all my cousins and I would watch it at my aunt’s house. Sounds corny but holds amazing memories. We are all in our 40s & 50s now and were texting how sad his passing is.
That’s so sweet. We were lucky enough to own a video of it, so we could watch it whenever we wanted.
So sad. I can hope that Gilda is there waiting for him, wherever “there” is.
Re “his central-gentle-life affirming core personality,” this is how I always thought of him, along with his comedic genius. I remember feeling so sad for him when Gilda died.
I think Willy Wonka was my favorite performance, mostly because you could enjoy it on several levels — with childhood joy and wonder, and then later with appreciation and delight at its subversiveness. RIP, Mr. Wilder.
So so sad! I adored him. Had a huge crush on him when I was much younger. And so damn talented. He was surrounded by love at the end and that is a tremendous blessing.
Everything you said.
Ditto. R.I.P., Mr. Wilder.
Very well said – he leaves behind an incredible legacy.
That he died doesn’t surprise me as how he went down. Alzheimer’s is a pretty shitty way to go.
RIP Gene, you gave us so many laughs, I must have seen young Frankenstein dozens of times in the last 2 decades.
Isn’t 2016 over yet? Can’t bear it anymore!!
A very talented (and thoughtful) man who will be missed.
While it has not been a boring year, I agree with you and think that 2016 can go f— itself MANY times over.
RIP Mr Wilder
Loved his movies. My favorite has been Haunted Honeymoon. It is sad that he passed away, but it is nice to hear he was surrounded by people who loved him so much.
Haunted Honeymoon seems to get looked over a lot, but that is probably my favorite Gene Wilder movie after Willy Wonka. He was the best!
Oh my God! I totally forgot about that one! I gotta find it and watch it.
When I was a kid my fave movie for a spell was The Woman in Red with Kelly Lebrock. I must have watched it every weekend.
So sad to hear this. So much love for you Gene.
I fell in love with his tamed fox in the little

Wonderful actor.
I feel such sadness that we have lost someone who gave such joy.
RIP Gene Wilder. Thank you.
He was a truly great artist. Rest in peace, Mr.Wilder. Just the best…
tafeta darling. Tafeta. 🙁
Perfect!…Would you give me a hand with the bags?
Tremendous talent, bravo and safe journey Mr. Wilder.
Also much respect to his nephew for that beautiful statement.
So sad!!!! RIP 🙁
Thank you for the many laughs, Mr Wilder. Rest in peace.
Frahhnk en shteen!
May he rest in peace.
“No, it’s pronounced ‘Fronkensteen.'”
RIP, Gene.
go home, 2016–you’re drunk.
Thanks for making laugh Kaye. Just the chuckle I needed today.
RIP Gene. Thank you for the hours of entertainment you provided over the years.
Willy Wonka, young frankenstein, blazing saddles, see no evil hear no evil to name a few, I’m once again gutted even though he was 83 its still a shock.
My favourite song to sing to mini Lindy is Pure Imagination.
He was so funny…but also had this ability to profoundly communicate on aspects of humanity that are intangible. He was funny, but he was so much more. Sigh. Love him.
Agree. Sad day
RIP😢
God bless you for the many chuckles you gave. I couldn’t look at that face and those blue eyes and not smile.
Beautiful words from Jim Carrey on Twitter.. really touching:
” Gene Wilder was one of the funniest and sweetest energies ever to take a human form. If there’s a heaven he has a Golden Ticket. ;^) “
Perfection. Thanks for sharing.
Wow. That is a truly beautiful statement.
You’re welcome. Stunningly poignant and lovely thing to say, isn’t it?
I’ve noticed he is always chooses the sweetest words. I’ve never forgotten his tribute to Phillip Seymour Hoffman –
“For the most sensitive among us, the noise can be too much”..
Just exquisite.
THE best words I’ve seen written about Mr. Wilder.
so stunned that he was 83! Loved, loved, loved him in Willy Wonka.
RIP Mr. Wilder and thanks for the laughter!
Who didn’t love Gene Wilder? RIP.
I remember an interview he did for his movie Woman in Red with Gilda and Kelly LeBrock. An interviewer said it was too bad he doesn’t end up with the beautiful woman in the movie (meaning LeBrock) and he said, “Oh but I did.” (Meaning Radner.) I spent many an hour rewetting his movies, esp. Youmd Frankenstein.
Thanks for the laughs Gene. He seemed like a genuinely good man
What an incredibly thoughful, loving statement from his nephew.
I haven’t seen this interview and I can picture the smile he must have had on his face when he said that. He seemed like such a lovely, gentle guy. RIP.
Gene, Gene, the jive dancing machine. Have a little dance with Richard and share a little kiss and cuddle with Gilda for me. Much joy to you on your new journey, friend. You made mine and so many others’ journeys better for having your company along the way. Adios. RIP. Shine on, you crazy brilliant diamond.
RIP Mr. Wilder.
My mom has kind of snobby taste in comedy. I hsve never seen her laugh as hard as she did during the ‘I’m hysterical!!’ scene in The Producers. RIP Mr. Wilder. Thank you for making movies that brought my family together.
So sad. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was released when I was 7 and it was my favorite movie when I was a kid. It almost feels like losing a small part of my childhood. Rest in Peace Mr. Wilder, you’ll always be the real Willy Wonka.
Hugs.
I love that his life was well-lived. He inspires me to be a better, kinder, and more optimistic person. I wish his family peace as they grieve his loss.
Gone too soon. Lovely actor and man. He always said Gilda was funnier… a gentleman! 🙂
Loved young Frankenstein and many others of Gene Wilder´s works.
Rest in peace 🙁
I hope he and Gilda are having a wonderful reunion.
Oh, this one gutted me. I didn’t find out until I got home late tonight. He and Gilda crossed my mind today for no reason at all. Both of them were a part of my childhood in different ways. Gene will always be THE Willy Wonka. He was probably one of my first crushes, too. Those blue eyes and that voice!
Yeah, this one hurt a lot. Between this and Alan Rickman, I can’t take much more of 2016. The only thing that could top this for me is if something happens to Tim Curry. That would put me over the edge.
Losing Rickman still doesn’t seem real!
I always feel like it’s a bit sadder when a performer gets Alzheimer’s. It’s a terrible disease to witness in anyone, but it seems an insult to a mind that was sharper in some ways than average, capable of things not everyone can do. Almost anyone can memorize lines, but to take those lines and intuit a character to deliver them as is something really special.
His role in the The Little Prince….that was the best. It makes me cry a little when he tames his boy…
R.I.P., Gene Wilder, your work has and will stand the test of time. My favourite comedic movie ever is The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes’ Smarter Brother, and I’ve never understood why it’s not as well known as his other work. It’s pure comedy gold!
He will be sorely missed. 😞
RIP Gene Wilder. You were a blessing to us all.
Favorite movie line – Young Frankenstein: Wilder says to Igor “I think I can help you with that bump.” Igor says, “What bump?”
He was a mensch and a comic genius. A real gift to the world, to me. I’m going off to cry.
He was terrific and brought so much laughter and happiness through the years with all his performances. Life is so very fleeting. But the heavens will burn brighter now another star’s been added. RIP.
So sad, loved this mans movies, especially Willy Wonka, always had to wait to Christmas or Easter to watch it, that was back in the day when you could only get to see it, later on my faves were Stir Crazy and The Woman in Red (especially when he gets on the horse to ride to try and impress her, so funny) they dont make them like this anymore, RIP Mr Wilder.
Farewell to a gifted performer, an insightful comedian, and an all-around classy gent. We were lucky to have you.
