Mel Gibson on his new WWII movie: ‘Real superheroes didn’t wear any Spandex’

Take a moment and feel some sympathy for Andrew Garfield, who has to act like he enjoys the company of Steroid Santa, aka Mel Gibson. These are photos from the Venice Film Festival photocall and premiere of Mel Gibson’s latest directorial effort, Hacksaw Ridge. This is actually the first film Gibson has directed in a decade, since 2006’s Apocalypto. Gibson directed Garfield in a starring role as a real-life historical figure. Garfield plays Desmond Doss, who was a conscientious objector during World War II. Doss was a Seventh Day Adventist and a medic who refused to carry or use a gun during the Pacific campaign, and Doss was the first conscientious objector to ever win a Medal of Honor. Gibson obviously thinks very highly of Doss, and when asked about the consideration of Doss as a “hero,” Mel said some words:

Real superheroes: “Desmond attributed his actions to a power greater than himself, and the difference between a real superhero and a comic-book superhero is that real superheroes didn’t wear any Spandex.”

Doss’ religious commitment: “It’s undeniable what the essence of Doss was: he was a man of great courage and strong conviction, and strong faith; to go into a battle zone like that – which the Japanese called it ‘steel rain’, with the artillery and lead flying around – to go into that armed with only your faith, your faith has to be strong in you. That’s an undeniable part of the story I found really inspiring.”

Whether he’s taking a side in America’s gun control debate: “The man who refuses to touch a weapon, and do something much higher than something as venal as killing in a war; it’s a very high calling … You have to love the warrior, and give him homage and honour him. I hope this film does that.”

[From The Guardian]

I’ll admit that I find the story of Desmond Doss compelling, inspiring and heroic as well. I can understand why people wanted to make this into a film, and it’s a nice reminder that there are real heroes in the world, heroes who don’t wear capes. But… Mel Gibson relates to Doss’s story and that irritates me. Mel Gibson thinks he’s been maligned as a man of faith, that he’s faced the slings and arrows of society and he too is martyred in a sense. And that’s just not the reality. The reality is that he verbally and physically abused Oksana Grigorieva and it had nothing to do with his faith.

PS… I didn’t see any photos of Mel’s young girlfriend at Venice. Hm.

    He looks constipated.

  2. Little Darling says:

Real men don’t beat women and give out crazy racist rants.

I can’t with this one. Like at all.

  3. Jessie says:

    STEROID SANTA.

    LOVE. IT. <3

    • ElleBee says:

IKR, I actually LOL. Now that I’ve seen him as Steroid Santa I can’t unsee it.

      • Jessie says:

I really can’t think of anything that can top it. He looks constipated, too. Like he might sh*t a diamond.

    • Snappyfish says:

@Kaiser YOU win the Internet today!! Brilliant comment. & He shall forevermore be Steroid Santa!! He is such an awful human being & I remember how handsome he was in his Mad Max day. It just shows the inside ugly will eventually bubble it’s way to the surface

    • Tiny Martian says:

I love it as well, but to me he looks more like a Steroid Yard Gnome. No alliteration with that moniker, though. 🙁

  4. I saw the movie this morning (I’m at the Venice Film -festival) and it was actually quite good. Andrew was great and the story really is inspiring and heroic. It’s VERY violent though, so the anti-violence sentiment is lost a bit.

Mel is a decent director even though he’s gross.

    • jeanpierre says:

I love a lot of Mel Gibson’s movies. I think he is more than decent as a director but sadly he is far from being a decent man. So, here’s another one I actively boycott. I hope to see the day Hollywood starts to care.

    • Bridget says:

No shock there, Mel likes the violence in his movies.

      • marjiscott says:

You mean “Mel Gibson likes violence.” Period, end of sentence.
And yes, Mel, no one in Hollywood will take your repeated calls.

  5. Naya says:

Why should we sympathise with Andrew Garfield? He no doubt has many scripts sent to him, its not like he is an Asian woman in Hollywood whose roles would “naturally” be sent to his blonde on-again girlfriend. Of all those scripts he picks this one. Let him bathe in the pigs mud bath he chose for himself.

  6. Marty says:

Nice to know Hollywood can overlook this man’s blatant racism and bigotry in favor of his ability to make a good movie.

    • original kay says:

Think of it as a social experiment. It’s interesting to see how people justify supporting known racists, bigotry, abuse, pedophilia, the list goes on and on, all in the name of “art”.

Some say they compartmentalize. Personally, I do not understand that but I am not a grey area person so much.

      So I’m with you.

      • Ariadne says:

There’s nothing grey about supporting horrible celebrities financially and socially. Those two key ingredients allow them to get away with a multitude of crimes.

      • Marty says:

I was just talking about this with my family, Kay. For as progressives and liberal as Hollywood likes to come off, at times, they can really represent the worse of society.

When the dollar trumps all moral and personal responsibility to them, then they can no longer hide behind “art” as a reason for propping up these vile people.

    • Naya says:

Dont forget the domestic abuse. Two years after the Oksana tapes, he was taped AGAIN threatening to have her killed. Its always disturbed me that the anti semitism which is bad, gets so much more play than actual physical threats made to the mother of his child.

Mel knows that, which is why his redemption track began with trying to make a movie about the Maccabees. When that fell through because his script writer taped him threatening to murder Oksana and revealed he was STILL calling Jews “oven dodgers”, he turned to World War 2. Because surely if you make a movie in which Hitler is the bad guy then you cant possibly still be an anti semite, right? This film is a very clear strategic PR move. Which is disgusting enough without factoring in that he only has to redeem himself of the anti semitism to be accepted back into the fold.

  7. Shelly says:

Great story but I’ll pass on movie. I’m done supporting folks who show their true colors with hate speech etc.

  8. ds says:

Ah I have a problem; I really liked Apocalypto and think Gibson is a talented director but I just can’t stand his abusive stink. I don’t know what to think. It’s different with Allen, his films I can’t watch anymore; not just because of his horrible persona he incorporates in all of his films but because they’re all the same.

    • Zandy says:

I’m with you. Mel is brilliant director. But his behaviour and what he did makes me really uneasy to admit that I loved him as an actor and director. I’ve watched Braveheart at least 50 times (I live in Scotland), Apocalypto was a brilliant movie too.
Such a shame. I have to ask. It’s been many years since Oksana. Is he allowed to do what he obviously loves to do – making movies. Or does he have to disappear into oblivion forever?

  9. anna2222222 says:

I thought he had drug and alcohol problems and maybe was trying to sort his shit out (also I thought it Jodie Foster was rooting for him, how bad could he be?). Then I read the most recent transcript of one of his calls to Oksana and I’m done. I will never watch another thing that piece of scum is involved with.

  10. Lucy2 says:

It sounds like an interesting story, but it shouldn’t be Mel Gibson’s to tell.
And given his own history if anti-Semitism, maybe he should avoid all things WWII.

  11. tracking says:

    I’ve really missed the Melsplainin’…

  12. teehee says:

Why is this racist sexist psycho getting such special treatment???? (any attention or fame)

  13. Tiny Martian says:

Okay, in that closeup with Garfield, Mel looks completely insane. That’s all I’ve got!

  14. Marianne says:

I really like Andrew Garfield, but I will not support any of Mel’s new movies.

  15. Ashley says:

I don’t have anything to say besides, Andrew Garfield is my favorite.

  16. Redgrl says:

Used to love him in his Tequila Sunrise/Lethal Weapon days – so disappointed to learn he was truly a racist/sexist/homophobic lunatic all along. Not even interested in seeing those movies anymore….

  17. Shirleygail says:

As soon as I realized that was Andrew Garfield standing beside MG my first thought was: I wonder if working with MG was what broke Emma and Andrew up. Thoughts?
