The Obamas cover Essence & InStyle, discuss their legacy as First Family

obama1

This is what I needed after a morning full of news about MSNBC’s pathetic “Commander In Chief Forum” last night. In case you missed it, Donald Trump lied his ass off and Matt Lauer hates Hillary Clinton. Thankfully, we still have more than four months to enjoy the Obamas. Michelle and Barack Obama cover the October issue of Essence, and Michelle went solo for the cover of InStyle. Both covers are absolutely beautiful, and both are giving me a case of the feels and a case of the sads. Why can’t we have four more years of Obama??? WHY??? Here are some highlights from the Essence & InStyle interviews:

Michelle on Snapchat: “I’m still learning it. I’m fortunate enough to have a team of young people, because they get it. People on social media want to have fun.”

FLOTUS isn’t trendy: “I tend to not worry about the trends, because what works for an 18-year-old selfie queen may not for a 52-year-old First Lady who is a mom of teenagers she’s trying to be a good role model for.”

What she wants from her post-White House life: “Well, the honest answer is I have no idea, just like I had no idea what my life would be like living in the White House. My hopes are that we recapture some everydayness, some anonymity. And we know that will take some time. But I always joke that I dream of opening up my front door and walking out without any notification, without any security…But at the same time, there are many aspects to living in the White House that we’ll miss—the folks who work here, the staff who takes care of our families, my team who works on these issues. I mean, these are the people we see every day. They’ve cared for us for eight years. My children’s formative years have been in this house. But we’re young. Barack and I still want to do great work.”

POTUS on America: “…I can unequivocally say that America is better off now than we were when we came into office. By almost every economic measure, we’re better off. But having said that, we still have a lot of work to do.”

Michelle on the Obama Era: “I think when it comes to Black kids, it means something for them to have spent most of their life seeing the family in the White House look like them. It matters. All the future work that Barack talked about, I think over these last few years, we’ve kind of knocked the ceiling of limitation off the roofs of many young kids; imaginations of what’s possible for them. And as a mother, I wouldn’t underestimate how important that is, having that vision that you can really do anything—not because somebody told you, but because you’ve seen and experienced it. I think that will be a lasting impact on our kids.”

[From E! News & Essence]

You know what this reminded me of? Donald Trump’s asinine and misogynistic comment that Hillary Clinton doesn’t “look presidential.” Because that was part of implicit and explicit criticism of Barack Obama too: that he didn’t have “the presidential look.” Except that I think the Obamas are now and have always been the picture of grace, class, elegance, coolness, intelligence and family values. This is what a president looks like. This is what a First Family looks like. And my God, we’re going to miss them.

Last thing: they are killing me with this photo. I am dead now.

Hi POTUS and FLOTUS. Please do not leave us. We didn’t deserve you, you beautiful people. I’m going to be super depressed come January

    • doofus says:

      everything you said.

      DON’T GO, BO and MO!!!

on another note, that pic of them in front of the window is SO BEAUTIFUL. (and I had no idea that MO has such a nice butt! she is everything…)

    • Annetommy says:

Time you Americans changed the restriction on no more than two presidential terms, then we could keep them. If you can’t do that, please please don’t let Trump in. The rest of the world is relying on you….and on a shallow note, they are a gorgeous couple.

  2. QQ says:

God I’m going to Cry! I really really Am, I cannot handle them not being at the helm, Sorry i’m gonna STAN SHE LOOKS AMAZING on that cover, I don’t know If I love her or him or her mom or the girls more!!!

  3. Nev says:

    Awwwww can’t deal.

  4. Kaye says:

    I love them.
    The end.

  5. Snappyfish says:

I adore them. They have been class & dignity & an amazing role model about true family values. We will miss them terribly. They also returned respect to the White House & around the world

  6. La Ti Da says:

With the country tearing itself apart over this election I imagine the Obamas are counting down the days till they’re away from it all. I can’t blame them either. Its heartbreaking to read the vicious disgusting racism that is thrown at them and their daughters constantly. Especially the things people feel they have the right to say about the girls, my God! I hope they are kept away from most of the online hate, but realistically some of it must reach them. They’ve earned their respite from public scrutiny, but I’m thrilled to hear they both plan on continuing their amazing work.

  7. Jenns says:

I just love them so much. They were the perfect first family.

  8. B2C says:

Beautiful!, I am going to miss them so much, We did not deserve them but they were there for us anyway.

  9. Shambles says:

Yes, Michelle, it matters. It matters a great deal. Cheers to changing the face of the White House. Obamas forever.

Also, that last picture… THE FEELS. They are so in love, and it inspires me. And on a superficial note… GOT DAMN MICHELLE. Her body is absolutely bangin.’ One of the most beautiful women on earth.

  10. Surly Monkey says:

They represent a level of class, intelligence and kindness that our country so desperately needs. I will miss them. That last picture….. sigh…..

  11. Catherine says:

When I read that Beyonce hung out with Michelle Obama at camp David before her birthday, I could have died of jealousy! We should all spend our bdays with Michelle!! Going to miss them, a lot. I hope they stay I public service ❤️🇺🇸

  12. Brittney B. says:

She’s right. An entire generation of kids will dream bigger and go farther simply because the Obamas were our First Family for 8 years (to say nothing of the impact of her campaigns and his policies). It’s enough to make me tear up.

The Internet and his presidency have exposed some awful truths (that many of us already lived daily) about our society. But I’m hopeful for the future, because we’ve never raised a new generation with so much social awareness and such positive representation of different races and genders. I cannot wait to see what our government looks like in a few decades.

  13. Dumbledork says:

She really is gorgeous. Love her style.

  14. kay says:

“both covers ARE absolutely beautiful”, not “and” 🙂 kaiser, i can’t help it. xxxooo

that pic of michelle obama on the single cover is so gorgeous i had to shake my head a few times. i love her style, her smile and the epic soul shining through her eyes.

  15. Betsy says:

    She’s 52? I guess I froze her back at 46.

I will miss the Obamas, but dang. They’ve earned the right to be private citizens again (as much as former POTUSs get to be ever again) and I am looking forward to Madame President. If the stupid media will do its job, that is.

  16. SusanneToo says:

Can we just start a petition to cancel the election? Please? We’d have millions of signers in just a few hours. But, seriously, of the 13 presidents during my lifetime, this is the only time I will cry when the First Family leaves the WH.

    • Lee says:

I would love to it if there was a petition to keep President Obama and First Lady Michelle. I am so not looking forward to when his term ends. It will be a very sad day for all of us when they leave the WH. M they are the epitome of grace, strength, integrity and perseverance. They will be missed. Plus, First Lady Obama is correct. They have shattered the ceiling for many children across this country to understand that they too, can one day become president.

  17. minx says:

    Love, love, LOVE these two.

  18. Reece says:

So full of the sads, so empty of meaningful words.
    I miss them already!

  19. Giddy says:

After Obama’s inauguration, when the Marine helicopter carried away Bush 43, the celebrating crowd below sang Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye. What will they do when that same helicopter carries away the Obamas? I know what I’ll be doing, crying. Love, love, love, them and their love for each other is so inspirational.

  20. Abbess Tansy says:

It isn’t only children that the First Family has inspired. Many adults like me also know that life has many possibilities. Also learning that grace, class, professionalism can be done so effortlessly. I will miss both of you.

  21. Samipup says:

Do I spy some Flotus “shade” with that long sleeved dress? I think I’ve seen that style somewhere………

  22. Caroline says:

    Love this.

  23. adastraperaspera says:

I remember in 2008 running out of the house and into the Seattle streets with my friends after we watched his election speech on TV. Traffic stopped, with thousands filling the area in front of Pike Place Market. Everyone was crying and laughing and waving Obama signs. His victory speech is well worth watching again! The Prez would not want us to lose hope now, after something so very hard won. I believe that he and Michelle will continue to be a shining light for us all.

  24. NeoCleo says:

They are beautiful together and separately. I’m already missing them in the Oval Office.

  25. Alarmjaguar says:

    Just makes me smile!

  26. Jess says:

Love that InStyle cover. And maybe I missed this somewhere else, but is it now common knowledge that Matt Lauer is a sexist pig?

  27. Bethany says:

Ditto to everyone who has stated that they will be heartbroken when the Obamas leave the White House. I love them both so much and my fondest wish is that someday I get to meet this classy, elegant, extraordinary couple.

  28. blannie says:

Love them and will miss them beyond all measure. We didn’t deserve them (as a previous poster said), but they were there for us. If we could vote for Barack again, I would in a heartbeat.

  29. Cinderella says:

Eight years in the White House would suck the life out of anyone else, but not Michelle Obama. She looks more lovely with each passing year.

Both of them will continue to do great things. It’s hard to imagine what we’ll be up against without them next year.

  30. Truthie says:

They may not have the bank account of a certain presidential candidate (for now, anyway) but the President and First Lady have the kind of elegance and class that no amount of money can buy. And they are both smart enough to choose their own words to communicate to the public. Hard act to follow.

  31. Darlene says:

So I shared this on my FB and I have a friend arguing PASSIONATELY about how the final photo is “crude photoshop” and no way does the First Lady have a shape like that in the back and how someone at Essence “did this” to her and it’s disrespectful, etc. I don’t think it’s photoshopped. I think that maybe this is one of the few times she’s allowed herself to be styled to show off her shape in this way.

    Thoughts??
