Duchess Kate wears Jenny Packham for Canadian arrival: pretty & appropriate?

wenn29585179

These photos of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arriving in Canada made me happy. After more than five long years of marriage, the Duchess of Cambridge managed to land in a new country while dressed completely appropriately. It’s a Waity Miracle! Seriously, look at these photos. Her hair isn’t blowing all over the place, her pencil skirt isn’t blowing up, she’s not flashing anyone, nothing. It’s amazing (how low the bar is set for her).

The Duke and Duchess arrived in Victoria Saturday evening after a long private flight (paid for by Canadian taxpayers) which included their security personnel as well as a staff-entourage of (at least?) twelve people. This is the biggest entourage they’ve ever had, bigger than the staff they had for the India-Bhutan trip earlier this year. Their entourage includes (POOR JASON!) “three private secretaries, four press officers, one tour secretary, one operations manager, one PA and their nanny.” Plus Kate’s 24-7 on-call wiglet wrangler, Amanda Cook-Tucker, and Kate’s “stylist” Natasha Archer. That’s 13 by my count, unless Archer is being counted as private secretary.

As you can see, the big news is that we finally got some new photos of the royal kids. Prince George and Princess Charlotte have joined their parents for this tour, although no one’s sure how much we’ll see the kids after this first appearance. My guess is that George and Charlotte will be brought out for at least two more appearances this week. Kate also made sure her kids coordinated with her outfit, which is kind of cute, in my opinion. They’re all wearing coordinated shades of blue. As for Kate’s look… as I said at the beginning, I’m impressed by her completely appropriate choice. The dress is Jenny Packham. Kate paired it with a boring pair of LK Bennett (suede?) nude heels, a dress-matched Lock & Co hat and the Queen’s maple-leaf brooch. If you look closely at Kate’s hat, you can see that it too has a maple-leaf theme.

Of course, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie were there to greet the Cambridges. Trudeau is so cute, I wonder if Kate flirted with him like he’s the Canadian Ben Ainsley?

I wish the nude shoes would die. I am not a fashionista but she bores me to freaking tears with the way she dresses.

    • Ella says:

Yes! She could choose from all the shoes, and she chooses those shoes!!

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

Kate has an extremely long torso and proportionally very short legs. Nude shoes are thought to lengthen the look of the leg — a trick of the eye. I think it’s more than likely that’s why she tends to wear them so much.

This is, to me at least, the best Kate has looked in ages — one of her top two or three looks ever.

    • Em' says:

In some pics it looks like she is barefoot : it’s absolutely terrible. She has the worst shoe game ever.

    • Lucretia says:

my first thought was: there is no way in hell I would walk down those metal stairs in heels carrying a toddler and holding another child’s hand. glad they all made it down safely.

    • margo S. says:

I know right?! Fire this “stylist” of yours please. She’s the worst. And the makeup. Why, WHY does she insist on thick black eyeliner? It’s not the 80’s.

  2. Peacettw says:

Love her fascinators.. Always classy… This is the best she has ever looked. The color suits her

  3. lilacflowers says:

Charlotte already has a better shoe game than her mother.

    • Esmom says:

      Yes! MTE, lol.

    • smd says:

Lilacflowers! Thank you I giggled at this Have to say I think they all looked great and appropriate, it can be done! Now onto the countdown for teased wiglets, hand clutched at crotch, hair fiddling, vacant stares and this is terrible but the maniacal laugh she seems to have lately when trying too hard.

  4. Maya Memsaab says:

    Charlotte’s wee blue shoes!

    • antipodean says:

If I’m not mistaken, those would probably be Clark’s Startrite shoes. They are the first “proper” shoes my daughter had. They are classics for small feet, and look very cute. I think George’s are the “big boy” lace up versions of the same.
Where is the Cambridge Crotch Clutch in these photos? Let the games commence! Hopefully this tour will be a refreshing taste of straight forward fashion gossip. Sorely needed in these crazy, and worrying times!

  5. Sullivan says:

Those kids are adorable. Kate looks good. Regal, I dare say.

    • Zimmerman says:

They all look very classy, very appropriate. The only thing that bothers me is that literally every person I saw in the pictures had on long sleeves, except Charlotte. Was the temp warm-ish or would there have been a nip in the air?

Love the Prime Minister’s wife’s look. She’s got style. I couldn’t help thinking she and Kate talked and decided to wear a similar kind of dress.

      • Harla Jodet says:

The PM’s wife was informed of what color Kate would be wearing for the welcoming ceremony.

      • Juliette says:

It’s been rather breezy and rainy the last few days in the Lower Mainland and Victoria. Rained there later yesterday afternoon and it’s grey and overcast today as well. It’s been a little chilly at times too, I’ve already broken out a few of my sweaters for the season.

      • Eden75 says:

We are hitting fall in Canada and even in Victoria, where the weather is most agreeable and snow is a rare, if ever thing, it does get chilly. From some of the footage of yesterday, there seemed a bit of a breeze so it’s possible that it was chilly.

      • Veronica says:

We were at the airport when they landed and it wasn’t really that cold. There was a bit of a breeze but even me with a cold and only wearing a thing 3/4 length sweater I was fine. Getting off and plane and in to a car it was pretty ok temps.

    • TIa says:

I live right by Government house, yesterday was actually warm and muggy. I was actually suprised how radiant and relaxed Kate looked given the long flight. I wast going to go down for the greeting , because I don’t like these two and principle for their laziness, but my sister is in town for the Union of Municipalities Conference ( she got sent ironically because the Royals are going to our home on tour and no one wanted to miss them) …anyhoooo, i love my little sister but to say she is irreverent is an understatement, and she was standing there munching on an ice cream sandwich and came face to face with Kate, so my sister lazily gave Kate a ” Queen Wave” and kept on munching…Kate broke out in a smirk and did a little queen wave back! I thought , well damn! The girl has a sense of humour…and I liked her for that. My landlady on the other hand is in a frenetic tizzy about the visit because she is an actual ” Lady” and works at Gov. House. I have a horrifying feeling at the first opportunity she’s going to point out that we live in the House where Diana and Caroline Kennedy were treated for their eating disorders.

      • Citresse says:

Yes, the famous Montreux clinic. I heard of it when I lived in Vancouver years ago.
I wasn’t aware Diana had been treated there, but a Kennedy being there secretly wouldn’t surprise me.

      • Danielle says:

Lol! Awesome story, thanks for posting!

  6. Sarah says:

    Best she’s ever dressed!

    • vava says:

Soon we’ll see skin tight jeggings, flying hair, crotch clutching, and wedges. never fear, Kate is here!

      • Eden75 says:

If she pairs the jeggings with flannel, she’ll blend right in here for the time of year. Is it sad that part of me really wants to see that so I can have a giggle?

  7. Kitti says:

I always find it startling to remember that this overgrown girl is a parent…

  8. lizzie says:

girlfriend is not aging well. they need to add a botox certified esthetician to their massive staff.

  9. Aligoat says:

She actually looks like someone of stature and importance because she’s wearing – dun dun dun – appropriate clothes.

    • Hazel says:

Go figure! It appears she or someone on her staff is capable of learning. Perfect outfit, although it appears to fit a little too closely considering she has to reach out to shake hands & accept flowers.
I loved the family-wide coordination of color. And I noticed little PG has his great-great-grandfather’s legs. I wonder if he’ll be similar in stature, as well.

    • smd says:

Yes Aligoat! Refreshing and the whole family nailed it!

    • notasugarhere says:

To me it looks like the outfit is wearing her, as they often do. The outfit was close to being good, until those stupid puffed shoulders showed up again.

  10. Secret squirrel says:

It gives me heart palpitations to see Kate walking down some steep stairs in shoes that high whilst holding a baby and a toddler’s hand. If it were me, I would have tripped on the top step for sure.

    • Spidey says:

My thoughts exactly – a disaster waiting to happen.

    • Deedee says:

Easy to remedy. Let William carry Charlotte. Why would her parents not make that logical choice?

      • HappyMom says:

Because a lot of times toddlers have a preference-and the preference is Mom.

      • Citresse says:

I think Will and Kate are trying to get George to feel less fearful of being in the spotlight. They purposely wanted him to walk down the stairs without him begging to be picked up as numerous times in the past. I think if William had carried Charlotte, then George would’ve been demanding to be carried also.

      • Ella says:

I don’t think it’s that calculated. I think George wanted to walk, and like any family they just go with the flow and Charlotte is picked up by whoever.

    • Jane says:

You took the words right out of my mouth. How she did that without tumbling down those stairs is amazing. Perhaps I am just a klutz. I would have tumbled easily.

    • Birdix says:

I was thinking that too– if Charlotte lurched forward, the whole thing would have gone south. But then I was noticing how open and curious she was–must be an easy baby. My kids would have been buried in my shoulder at that age in that situation.

      • Starlight says:

I am going to stick my neck out here I can’t recall Harry being carried by Diana down stairs in high heels or Diana crouching down in high heels to eye level William when they were tots. It’s not a Royal thing – these royal children seem to be encouraged to be not carried early or crouched down to in public – just a thought. The blue was lovely – I am sure the visit will bring closer relations to the UK after Brexit.

      • Elizabeth says:

Starlight, Diana didn’t wear high heels, because she was only an inch shorter than Prince Charles.

    • bettyrose says:

OMG, I said the same thing down thread. She clearly has untold talents.

    • brincalhona says:

Yeah, but she’s had way more practice than us given the number of holidays she’s taken. She’s put in her 10,000 hours of plane steps.

    • Ericka says:

Even though she is slim you can tell she has great balance and muscle tone, she even squatted with Charlotte in her arms to talk to George after she got off the plane.

  11. Seraphina says:

She looks good here. Love the hat. I could never pull off that heel height and carry a child while walking down those steps.

I really see Charlotte resembling the QE.

And the Canadians’ PM and his wife look great.

I’m interested to see how this tour goes.

    • Megan says:

To me, Charlotte looks exactly like Pippa.

    • minx says:

Oh, Charlotte looks like a Windsor through and through.
Boys often look like their mothers, girls like their fathers. It happened with my son and daughter and I’ve seen it so often that I’m comfortable making that statement.

      • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

Everything is subjective, isn’t it? I think my sons and daughter more resemble my husband -especially eye and mouth shape- and look nothing like me, except for my coloring. People outside the family who do not know us well think my daughter looks more like me- I think it is because of hair/eye/skin color similarity without analyzing features. Subjective, as I said.
        Crazy.

  12. p says:

My 11 year old asked ” Do you thinks she’s wearing underwear this time?”

Also she saw some pictures of her neck creases and said “She looks older than you” and I’m 10 years older than her.

    • manda says:

      What a great kid!!

Re: Kate, she’s too skinny and probably doesn’t wear enough sunscreen while out on all those holidays. Those creases are going to get deeperand more pronounced!

    • Soothsayer says:

Good to see you’re teaching your daughter the important stuff

    • cynic says:

HaHa! Your daughter is a future celebitcher.

    • Polly says:

Yeah lol awesome. It’s great that you’re teaching your child to be judgy so early in life. It’s never to soon to learn that as a female she will be criticised for her appearance and compared unfavourably to other women. But hey, you got a compliment about your neck so that’s great!

      • antipodean says:

It seems sad when one’s life is so joyless that one finds it necessary to pour vitriol over a very innocuous and amusing comment. I thought p’s comment was quite tongue in cheek, with a dash of observation, much like most others on a site called CeleBITCHY. You go p, and your observant daughter.

      • tmot says:

Right. Because 11 yr olds always go for the neck!
I think that was a fake comment. Or maybe I just hope so.

      • Mae says:

Agreed @Polly. It’s sad when someone’s life is so joyless that they find great amusement in encouraging children to pour vitriol on a woman who gets targeted for her appearance by other women very frequently. Kids do like to mimic parents at that age . . .

  13. ickythump says:

Yea she looks great here apart from th shoes …th kids r gorgeous

  14. manda says:

I think black shoes would have looked nice. Or maybe gray? I would have tried a few different things on, for sure. These nude shoes are so blah, and I know they’re not, but they look dingey

    • ElleBee says:

The right grey shoes would have been great with this. That being said this is the best she has looked since the red get up at QEII’s Jubilee Boat pageant

    • Sharon Lea says:

Mandy I would have tried on black or grey shoes if it were me. But ElleBee, yes, grey would have been perfect!

I don’t get the nude shoes over and over, its not like the world is following her.

  15. LAK says:

I’m here for Sophie Trudeau. That jaunty hat is amazing.

    • Sixer says:

I’m here… I don’t know why I’m here! Oh, I know. My usual moan! Perhaps they can arrive on a newly refitted Britannia next time?

      • LAK says:

Why are we giving them a new yacht? Seriously?!

They should buy their own. JK Rowling’s yacht is for sale at a bargain price of £15M.

      • Sixer says:

I had such a tantrum over that, Mr Sixer called for the sal volatile!

It’s not really for them, though, is it? It’s for Boris to sail around the world in a penis extension pretending to do trade deals. Or something.

But if you say Sophie’s hat is better than Kate’s hat, I will believe you.

      • Spidey says:

Don’t hold your breath on the new yacht happening Sixer.

      • LAK says:

Sixer: the hat is giving me CASABLANCA fierceness ( to borrow from Tyra Banks).

Kate has this hat in 2 different colours. There is this one above and a red one. The dress is one we’ve seen already in white flock wallpaper effect lace. Same ol’ same ol’

Frankly i’m surprised she didn’t theme dress and wear the lace dress with the red hat thus canadian colours covered like her first visit to canada.

I thought the yacht dream died with Cameron/ Osborne exits.

Why give Boris an extension when he won’t last on the job?

      • Sixer says:

And in the meantime, in other transportation-type news, Sophie Wessex has just cycled 450 miles for charity.

      • bluhare says:

I think it was great that Sophie did that. 450 miles!! I’m not a cyclist so that just boggles me.

      • notasugarhere says:

And so sweet that Edward and the kids (plus the band!) were there to greet her when she arrived from her 5 day journey.

    • Blue says:

      *honks for Sophie*

      • antipodean says:

I agree, have to give Sophie props for her fabulous endurance bike ride. All to celebrate DOE’s sixty year anniversary of his awards. A marvelous effort from her, although having to greet her pompous buffoon of a husband at the end of it all is the real effort. The pictures of her arriving at Buck House were quite amusing, Eddie actually looked quite animated. Lady Louise looked lovely, she is getting so tall, and elegant.

      • kori says:

My favorite of the family. She had a rough start but now Sophie is a royal star. Great fashion sense too. I saw her in person once–very lovely.

    • Seraphina says:

Lak, I so agree. Canada’s first couple is looking quite dapper.

    • Sharon Lea says:

Yes, I love her hat too.

    • Sunsetsnow81 says:

The hat is fierce! So dashing!

    • bluhare says:

I like the hat too, but is it the photo making it look like it doesn’t match the dress?

    • Reece says:

We’ve got maple leaves. Now I’m holding out for the taco clutch to reappear.

    • SugarMalone says:

A friend of a friend of mine designed that awesome hat. Her store is here in Toronto: The Saucy Milliner.
Everyone get their own and be just as fierce as Sophie!

  16. Betti says:

All j have to say on the outfit is that she didn’t flash Canada getting off the plane and the mop was tied back.

Judging by how the children r dressed to match her they r def going to centre stage for their PR game of this tour. the show she made of fussing over George just screams ‘see I’m a busy SAHM raising delicate children who is too busy with that to be bothered with my duty’.

Plus I love Sophie trudeaus shoe game. Maybe she can give pointers to Chutney.

    • Prairiegirl says:

Sophie can give Kate shoe tips in return for hat tips. Sophie’s hat game is terrible. Fedoras don’t suit her. More cloches!

      • Anna says:

I don’t want to be mean but I kept reading the comments and couldn’t believe my eyes.. That Hat is terrible and it look awful on her. She seems like a lovely woman but the hat, although horrible by itself, it doesn’t even go with the dress!

    • Megan says:

I don’t think she was making a “show” of reassuring George when he started to get nervous about the crowd, noise, etc. I think she was preventing a meltdown.

  17. Kim says:

Their expressions are hilarious! Doesn’t look like any of them want to be there in the last 2 pics!

    • Blue says:

The last two pics look like they were taken from the ceremony at the cenotaph. Smiling would have been inappropriate.

  18. Keats says:

Sophie Trudeau is giving me serious lady detective vibes.

  19. MinnFinn says:

Charlotte takes after Princess Margaret. Kate looks unusually polished and buttoned up. Wearing her hair not loose is half the battle of not looking sloppy in windy conditions. Kudos for not flashing us. Fifth photo from the top, Kate has huge hands. They are bigger than Willy’s.

Kate is not attracted to Justin. It would be immediately evident from these photos.

    • Nic919 says:

You need to watch the actual film of that incident in the House of Commons and you will see that he didn’t intentionally hit her at all. A conservative needed to go up and vote and the NDP (which this woman was a member of ) were blocking this guy from voting for some reason. Justin’s mistake was in getting up and grabbing the guy by the arm to move him forward. You can tell in the film that he doesn’t even see the woman and so when he hits her with his elbow in the boob she gets out of the way and then suddenly starts to leave. Once this happens, Trudeau starts to walk after her to see if she is ok and then the NDP leader Mulcair starts yelling at him before he can apologize directly.

Later on he apologizes at least twice. The NDP then decided to turn this into Justin is a crazy monster who abuses women moment. It was a political show from all angles. Trudeau is the guy who booted two men from the liberal caucus when an NDP woman came to him about sexual harassment allegations. He is not perfect, but the elbow incident what not a shining moment for anyone.

      • Blue says:

I lean towards and mostly vote NDP, but I lost a lot of respect for Tom Mulcair & the NDP that day. If you watch the video, he clearly didn’t see Brouseau as she was behind him. She laughed until the NDP realized they could try to capitalize on it.
Violence against women is very real and very serious and I feel like the NDP’s reaction trivializes the real issue.

      • hogtowngooner says:

Same here, Blue. I’m an NDP supporter (though sometimes will vote Liberal) and the way they handled that “incident” was so embarrassing. I lost a ton of respect for them.

    • Eden75 says:

The storm over that was crap. Like Nic said, watch the video. It was, if anything, an accidental boob tap, which has happened to all of us in a crowded area. That was nothing but bull sh$t.

    • Jaded says:

@AMA: The “elbow incident” was a complete set-up. A much of a muchness, and if you watch the video you’ll see the woman in question snickering like “Haha…I got him!” immediately afterwards. It was a stupid trick by the NDP who received a ton of flack for it and Trudeau, instead of getting all huffy, was extremely apologetic – he really did turn the other cheek and by doing so deflated the incident and made the woman and her party look like bratty little children.

Signed – A Canadian who Lives in Victoria and did NOT go to greet the Royals.

    • Scotchy says:

Elbow gate was a joke but the liberals are a dangerous party in bed with the Conservatives. Mulcair made a mess of things. I blame him for the disaster that is a Lib majority with the Cons being official opposition. Trudeau is a silly bro and in no way represents Canada to me.
We voted with fear so let’s see what these next few years bring.. because thus far it isn’t much..
but at least they look good riiiggghhht…

Signed a beige Canadian that doesn’t get the “royals” and would love to see real diversity in Canadian politics

    • Tessy says:

There’s plenty o reasons to be disappointed with Justin but that elbow thing is not one o them. His love for pipelines, and the site C dam, and persistence in forging ahead with these rotten trade deals show that he is a prettier face of Harper.

  20. bootyhoo says:

    beautiful family!

  21. Annie says:

She looks great. Love the appropriate clothes and hairstyle. But for the shoes, perfect. Kids are so darn cute and couldn’t get anymore adorable. Even Prince William looks good.

  22. Catherine says:

As always, I’m in complete awe of her balancing skills!! Heels, metal stairs, holding a baby and hands with a toddler! I would face plant

    • Elizabeth says:

Kate has to do it rarely…This is only the 3rd time we have seen Charlotte officially. Besides, if you see videos on twitter, they descended from those steps very very slowly.
And charlotte was constantly reaching for William
As for carryig baby in high heels…Many women do it daily…
Among famous women, Victoria Beckham comes to mind. 🙂

    • Hazel says:

All that skiing & yoga has given her great muscle control.

  23. Elizabeth says:

Kate has already flashed Canada the last time around. Lazy Katie won’t bother twice.
Plus she must be super competitive knowing the stylish Sophie would be there. Kate might have flirted with Justin had Sophie not been there but even being older than Kate, sophie looks 10 years younger than her.

  24. Shambles says:

We are all George in the top photo.

  25. Lindy says:

This is one of her best looks in a long time, and her hair looks so pretty pinned up.

I mostly came here to note that JTrudeau is my celebrity crush. (I would love to move to Canada)!

  26. Green Is Good says:

Justin Trudeau is sooo dreamy. *swoon*

    • Citresse says:

      I don’t understand this.
Trudeau is, and I know many others in my age group born and raised in Canada who agree with me, find him inexperienced, immature, glib, arrogant, spoiled rotten and in so many ways not deserving of being PM, essentially he got there riding on his father’s coattails. The Trudeau name buys (bribes) a lot in Canada.

      • Jaded says:

As a Canadian who was around when Pierre Trudeau was PM, I have to respectfully disagree with you. Pierre ensured his kids lived a real life, not spoiled rotten by their parents or nannies. They were all brought up to respect the environment and were ardent conservationists long before it became trendy. Their vacations weren’t in luxe hotels in Europe or the Caribbean, but camping trips in the wilderness with Farley Mowat and David Suzuki.

Some of the good things he has started:

        – lower taxes on the middle classes to 20.5%
        – create a new tax bracket on those earning more than $200K of 33%
        – more leave time for employees needing to care for sick and dying family members
        – installation of a much-needed independent advisory board for senate appointments
        – the removal of any regulation which would not allow scientists to speak openly of their research to the media
        – creating a national public inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women in Canada

Just a start. He did not “buy” or “bribe” his way into his position, and he may be young but he’s experienced public life and duty from the moment he was born.

      • Bingo says:

Name recognition does count for a lot (cf. Trump) but don’t forget PET was despised by a big part of Canada by the time he left office, and the reaction to him was how we got both the Reform Party and the Bloc Quebecois, as well as another decade of constitutional wrangling. I honestly think Justin’s election had more to do with people being (rightly) sick of Harper, and if Mulcair hadn’t imploded, we’d have been looking at a Liberal/NDP minority coalition rather than a Grit majority.

As for Justin himself — I’m not impressed so far, but this parliamentary year will be the proving ground, for me. I’m open to being convinced.

      • bcgirl says:

        Cheers Jaded!!
Like Obama I have high hopes for Trudeau’s government.

      • antipodean says:

Hi, Jaded, I have to ask, I am probably miles off base here, but are you the lady who was moving cross country just recently? If so, I hope you are well settled, and I am so pleased you are back on CB with your much admired comments. Forgive me if I am wrong, but your name rings a bell.

      • Citresse says:

Why do people believe just because a son or daughter of a former PM enters politics, it guarantees they’re perfect candidates as a future PM? Last I heard, Mulroney wants his daughter Caroline to enter federal politics. God please, I hope that’s not happening.
I don’t like the conservative party… in fact, I don’t like politicians at all.
I know several people from the UK having emigrated to Canada during the sixties and most of them couldn’t stand to watch a series of Trudeau’s policies from the Petro- Canada and NEP debacle etc having contributed significantly to creating billions of debt by the eighties. Trudeau’s wife Sophie is a spoiled brat too. She insisted one of her assistants move all her yoga mats (so she wouldn’t have to touch them) at the press gallery dinner. The Victoria govt house meetings between the Cambridges and Trudeaus should be fantastic- two pairs of spoiled, sheltered brats together under one roof.

      • Jaded says:

@antipodean – yes, I am she!! You have an amazing memory 🙂

I got here at the end of May and am well settled and enjoying my new life here, not to mention I am with the man I love full time instead of hopping back and forth across the country for visits that always left us sad when they came to an end.

Good to see you still on CB and, despite the time difference, I’ll still add my two cents’ worth from time to time.

        Best regards to you!

      • mazzie says:

You dislike Justin Trudeau, that’s fine but don’t assume that the rest of us do. Voted for him and so far I’m comfortable with how he’s doing. Is there an agenda? OF COURSE there is – he’s a politician. Better than that bag of hair, Ambrose and that dogwhistler, Kellie Leitch.

      • vauvert says:

Many others disagree with you. He is a feminist, works on fulfilling his campaign promises, is repairing the image we had under Harper, appointed numerous women and minorities, walked in the Pride parades, etc. I like him and many other Canadians do too, and it has nothing to do with his looks or name.

      • antipodean says:

@Jaded, thanks for your reply. I am so pleased you are happily settled with your Love. I remember when you said you were moving, and us CBers wished you well. Glad to know I’m not going doolally, sometimes I think I am on a fast track to Alzheimers, so good to know I’m not there yet! I’ll look forward to your future comments. Quite often I just cruise through without commenting, but always enjoy the good read, and information I get from fellow CBers, you of course, included! I learn so much from everyone’s views, and hope it helps to make me more broadminded, and educated. I also enjoy the good laffs I often get on this site.

      • Jaded says:

@citresse – we’re not all thinking that Justin Trudeau is perfect just because of who his father was. Nor do we think he’s right 100% of the time – it’s not a black and white issue as you’re inferring, it’s that he’s doing a good job leading the way on some key issues that are important to Canadians. There is no perfect politician just as there is no perfect person in any walk of life, and if you judge him and his wife by speculation and gossip, you’re missing the entire point of what makes a country’s leader effective – by addressing the key issues that matter to the majority. Like his insistence on having 50% gender parity in his cabinet.

If gossip about Sophie’s yoga mats makes you hate our Prime Minister, I think you should look a little deeper into his policy decisions instead.

      • Tia says:

Sorry Jaded, I am a long term Card carrying fed liberal, stumped hard through the dark days of the party when they were wiped out by Harper elections even though I live in hopelessly NDP ridings. I have actually met and socialized with Trudeau the lesser at my house on Haida Gwaii and down in Gwaii Haanas he REALLY S that vapid, arrogant and deeply unintillecutal. HE is NOT his father, love or hate PET , he was a deeply brilliant man. If you look in the dictionary under ” white privilege” you will find Justin’s picture. He is deeply disliked within the Heart of the Federal Liberal Party , ( big L, little C) and is felt he is truly NDP at heart, but used his father legacy to jump into liberal politics. BUT Better him than Harper , I, we genuinely believed he would wipe out Harper and NDP as he literally is a blank slate; further he is ” first minister” not President, he is not responsible for any changed policy , in fact very little has changed YET. Justin is just great window dressing for now, but soon he will have to lead, and he IS smart enough to surround himself with very qualified people, the minute he stops listening the party will eat him. Sophie has all the substance of a cotton ball. But hey, they look good…l.

  27. Jane says:

Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau looks so bored in that one picture. Love it!

And you think she is a beauty, check out her mother-in-law as the PM’s wife – Margaret Sinclair Trudeau. With Christmas baby Justin.

    http://www.speakers.ca/2015/10/the-chatelaine-qa-margaret-trudeau/

    https://earthenergyreader.wordpress.com/2012/04/27/how-the-illuminati-took-over-the-canadian-political-landscape-and-other-disasters-4/

And yes, a very appropriate outfit. I lost my remote so we were stuck on the station providing round the clock coverage of this visit. I live on Vancouver Island. My Mama was not impressed!

I can’t wait for my daughter’s hair to be long enough for barrettes. My little one is cuter than Charlotte in my mother’s eyes, but Charlotte is pretty cute. And so well behaved.

  28. ElleBee says:

I expected Kate to have her skirt over her head while flirting with Trudeau and being generally inappropriate. I’m actually quite proud of her and her hair, clothes (still boring) and behaviour are finally befitting her station.

I actually think Trudeau is far better looking than horse face Ben Ainslie but judging by her choice in husband I suppose she prefers english males of the equine variety.

Also, those babies are sooooo precious but their clothing makes me groan. What year is this? How can infants look dowdy? I can let the colour palette go for now as they are matching their parent (very cute) but I hope she doesn’t stick with this outdated way of only styling her daughter in pastels.

Overall 4/5 for this effort. The -1 is because I know these poor babies are trotted out for PR purposes.

    • Onerous says:

I see this complaint about the children’s clothing so often – but I don’t understand it. They’re wearing classic, timeless children’s clothes – the kind I wore AND my children wore. I think they look darling and appropriate.

      • Prairiegirl says:

I agree. The kids always look great!

      • Wilma says:

I actually have that exact same dress for my little girl. I got it from a thriftshop, so I’m curious where it’s from. My mother-in-law loves dresses like that so I got a couple of them.

      • HappyMom says:

That’s how I dressed my kids when they were small for formal occasions too.

      • Kate says:

They aren’t timeless, they’re kitschy. Knee socks with shorts…if you’re not trying to be all cutesy and nostalgic you’d just put them in pants.

    • Betti says:

It’s only taken her 5 years to dress and act appropriatley. Guess she really is that slow.

    • Nic919 says:

It is autumn in Canada so wearing shorts is actually silly. The sweater was fine but he must have been chilly in the shorts. If you look at what the Canadian kids were wearing in the crowd none were wearing shorts.

      • ElleBee says:

Someone further up also points out that Charlotte is wearing short sleeves

      • Tia says:

As I said earlier it was warm and muggy yesterday, kids outside of Lt. Governors waiting to see the Royals were definitely wearing shorts and it was 19 degrees today. We are Victoria, “not the rest of Canada ” we have palm trees for gods sake! lol sometimes we get snow in winter, sometimes we are wearing shorts. The kids looked fine, and oddly Katy and Willy look very happy so far ,but then again Justin and Sophie would be right up their alley.

      • Takej says:

Hmmm I live in Victoria and the weather is definitely still fine for shorts. My 7 year old son hasn’t been in pants yet and my 5 year old only a few times. I noticed that Charlotte has fewer layers than the rest of them but kids often don’t feel the cold the way adults do and they tend to have a mind of their own when it comes to dressing anyway.

      • Happy21 says:

Fellow Victorian here as well. It was a lovely day on Saturday. I wore shorts on Friday and one other day last week as well.

  29. bettyrose says:

How is she descending steep airline stairs in heels while holding a baby and giving her only free hand to George? We don’t give this woman enough credit. That picture gives me vertigo. I would have toppled over trying to do that.

  30. It'sJustBlanche says:

I’m not gonna lie, I like everything she wears. After I saw that pink Lela Rose dress a week or so ago, I went and bought it. I had wanted it earlier this spring but waited until it went on sale and by then it was out of my size. Apparently they’ve restocked it because she wore the dress. So yeah me! I feel like a damn princess!

  31. vava says:

This is one of her best looks yet. The ensemble photographs better outside, the indoor photos show the hat is a different shade than the dress. YAY for no flashing!

As for the dress design, Packham should have dropped the poofed shoulder, and I don’t like the collar in the front, it looks nice from the back, though.

Different shoes would have been nice, but this is Kate we’re talking about…..

  32. Mo2 says:

I saw her and she looked perfect. Her stylist and hairdresser flew with them. They both did outstanding jobs on the entire family.

Her wearing a single Diamond Maple leaf pin was such a nice salute to Canada. Looked great on her dress.

    The whole family looked lovely.

Do you think the Royals have airline stairs set up at the palace to practice their decent in heels?

  33. Citresse says:

I caught the satellite feed and noticed a number of things:
    – there were plenty of staff and other assoc deplaning from the aft exit while the air stairs were on the way for the Cambridges… I counted closer to twenty-five or so individuals
-Will and esp Kate appeared to be concerned for George- he seems to find crowds and cameras scary- he’s a shy child, poor dear, I feel for anyone of any age experiencing anxiety
-Will appeared to be nervous at one point during the reception at the legislature.. I think he and Kate share signals and Kate responded by placing her hand on his knee to help calm him… I also noticed he seemed flushed (nerves)… this was prior to Will’s speech
-Kate seemed tired… it noted by other trip arrivals where she seemed to have much more energy. With strong headwinds (prevailing winds) the flight from London to Victoria is close to 11 hours… therefore I thought a three hour reception time was a bit long for CDN officials to impose considering by the time they were finished it was after 3am London time for Will and Kate.
-surely little Charlotte must be walking by now… it would be nice to see her stand beside her big brother… she likes her hair bows, sweet

    • AmyLW says:

I found your comment interesting. I’ve made a similar observation a few other times. I wonder if William has an anxiety disorder. Any thoughts. I know we are just observing small moments but I truly wonder… I also wonder how it changes how we observe/interpret them if that is their truth.

      • Citresse says:

Well the poor guy has PTSD. Imagine receiving the news your mother has suddenly died in a car crash and then while you attempt to process it all, you must parade yourself in front of billions of people (TV audience included). All these years later, crowds are likely a strong trigger for William to flashbacks of the Diana funeral cortege.
We’ve stated William is lazy re- his air ambulance gig, but he has to process horrid situations there too and I think it’s difficult for him. William stated recently he didn’t want to listen to a stress filled phone call ( UK distress center)… William is telling us he’s suffering, certainly to some degree. Kate’s family is good for him in that respect, ie they encourage talking and I bet William dearly appreciates the informality away from the royals.

  34. Elizabeth says:

    hahaha this pic: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CtJ72BPWEAAXGsy.jpg

Turning backs on the hosts and trying the Angelina pose lol

    • Citresse says:

Yes, it was one of the most informal receiving lines at an airport I’ve ever seen. People were moving around and interestingly enough, I don’t think anyone offered a curtsy or head bow (males) though it’s not required- but you would think Sophie Trudeau as the wife of PM would curtsy but she seemed drunk- she kept making these odd faces, then noticed Trudeau placing his hand on her butt, then we they arrived at the legislature, Sophie kept making strange faces and blowing kisses to the crowd. She kept making weird faces.

    • zinjojo says:

That’s a hilarious picture. It says that she always, no matter what else is happening has to be focused on WIllie — even if it means turning her back on her host. Wow.

      • Elizabeth says:

Zinjojo – I know right!! It reminds me of the time Kate spent all night staring at WIlliam during the Diana Memorial Concert (When they were broken up) ..it was very creepy, I cant seem to find those pics but they were creepy. Back then, I never understood why WIlliam went back to her…now its becoming clearer, where else he would find someone so compliant with his ways and someone so very lazy…

    • The Original Mia says:

She was doing so well with the dress, then boom! Celebrity pose. Also kinda rude to turn your back on your hosts. She should have conversed with them, instead of fixating on William. Probably why the Governor General’s wife (in the green) was looking at her oddly.

    • Bingo says:

She’s not turning her back on the host, she’s listening to the Governor General, who is the Queen’s representative in Canada. (That’s why he greeted them first, before Trudeau.) The pose is a little odd, yes, but it might have something to do with the toddler balanced on her hip?

      • The Original Mia says:

Seeing as it was the PM that invited the entire family and not the GG, I think she could have given the Trudeaus her attention. JMO

      • Starlight says:

But she is side on – she could have put Charlotte down to stand by herself. It proves she is overly protective of the children like they are going to be snatched away or something. I mean is Kate ‘on show as a celebrity’ or is she there as a ‘diplomat’ The more I look at these photographs the more I think they. they have become over indulged rich celebrities and not Royal heads of state, they pop the children in and out of the mainstream and hide them most of the time in a gilded cage. This is why the DM is going overboard (I think ) about George not being spontaneous (acknowledging politely) Trudeau. George at this early age by now for a would be king in my view should be very comfortable in the spotlight.

  35. Sharon Lea says:

Kate looked great, it was cute to see Charlotte grabbing the maple leaf pin on her shoulder. The kids are adorable and I love seeing new pictures of them.

OT – Anyone read the article about Angelina yesterday from the DM, where she ‘wanted to become the next Diana?’

Quote, “One friend even suggested that Angelina harboured a secret ambition to marry into the Royal Family, saying: ‘Prince Andrew is on her radar.’”

hahahah LOL, Andrew comes across as such a dolt, I can’t imagine how Angelina could suffer through one dinner date.

  36. Amelie says:

Say what you want about Kate but descending those steep tarmac stairs holding Charlotte (who seemed a bit overwhelmed) AND holding George’s hand in heels–that is some kind of skill. Also at one point she got down to George’s level to check on him once they were on the tarmac being officially greeted and she did this while in heels and still holding Charlotte on her lap while she squat. She has got to have some kind of crazy abdominal strength!!

    • Elizabeth says:

She did it very slowly https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMbeU0o-AKg

And for a 30+ woman who is always well rested having no job and rare public duties she should atleast be able to do this much. (Having said that Willnot could have carried Charlotte but probably Kate wanted the focus on herself)

    • Guesto says:

      Wow @ Amelie.

Seriously? How low a bar is set for this woman that walking down steps in reasonable heels while holding a toddler is seen as a skill?

      Seriously??

    • notasugarhere says:

Agree, how low is the bar set that walking in inappropriate heels is a skill to be admired? That she spends hours a day working out instead of WORKING isn’t to be admired either.

      • Amelie says:

I don’t really care about appropriateness here so much. She’s the duchess and I’m not therefore not my problem! I get the criticism about her which is sometimes valid but I’m still impressed by her balance nevertheless and I’m not the only one as you can see from other commenters upthread. So I shall choose to remain impressed by her heel wearing.

      • notasugarhere says:

I’ll continue to be completely unimpressed. Let’s see her work as much as Letizia, who wears sky-high heels 99 percent of the time.

  37. bluhare says:

This is one of the best looks Kate’s had. I think she looks lovely. I even like her hat, and I usually don’t like the pancakes she wears on her head.

  38. Apples says:

Am I the only one who thinks Kate looks like she’s from 1940s? She just can’t pull off this look and seems like she whipped out her grandma’s war dress and hat finally.

  39. seesittellsit says:

The outfit is perfect but the matchy-match of the kids AND Mrs. Trudeau’s dress into the bargain is a bit . . . twee.

But the photos certainly shape the Happy Families No Different From Any Other Middle-Class Family Just A Bit Richer And Better Dressed narrative that the Windsors have been at pains to cultivate since Will’s great-grandfather took over from the dissolute Edward VIII and Mrs. Simpson.

If only all parties concerned were able to hide how badly they wished they didn’t have to be there. That’s an art the late, remarkable Queen Mum mastered to perfection.

  40. GingerCrunch says:

Drooling over the maple leaf brooch! Hope to see more. Gonna run over to Etsy to find some affordable vintage ones!!

  41. Tina says:

I think Kate looks lovely and appropriate. Nice hat, nice dress, even the boring shoes work with the outfit. I hate Sophie’s hat with the fire of a thousand suns, although her dress is nice.

  42. MellyMel says:

I feel like with everything going on here in the States, I haven’t seen or paid attention to them in forever. They look great and I really love her outfit here minus the shoes!

  43. Deedee says:

Here to say that I’m loving seeing my hometown on my favourite gossip site!

I heard that Wil and Waity arrived 45 min late to the parliament ceremony (after the airport arrival), because they had to get the children “settled”. And that the ceremony was looooong.

    • Happy21 says:

Me too! It’s not often (or almost ever) that Victoria is mentioned here 🙂
I still live here but didn’t bother to attend any of the events. Thought I would just see it on the news and well here on Celebitchy!

  44. Citresse says:

I also wanted to mention George’s shoes… he gone to big boy lace ups 🙂 and oh my, you can see he’ll be quite tall.. over 6’4″ King someday

    • Guesto says:

Hopefully not. Hopefully the BRF will be long gone by the time George is hitting 6ft.

      • addie says:

Amen to that! There is no point to royalty in the 21st century. There is no need for them. I hope George and Charlotte grow up as best they can as part of two God-awful families, have inherited some brains from somewhere, and learn to work and have decent careers. That would be the best thing for their welfare.

  45. Lyla says:

Nothing on the pippa photo hack?

    • Lin says:

I read about it on DM. They caught the hacker. But it made me laugh to read the Sun’s article patting themselves on the back for not buying the photos and for informing Pippa.

      • bluhare says:

Yeah, like the Sun is a bastion of morality! They knew they’d get sued and that’s why they didn’t bite.

  46. tracy says:

Kate looks like an airline staff. girl needs a burger.those kids are horribly dressed!!!?

  47. Eden75 says:

For those who are interested, here is a link to more pictures, our Premier looked quite nice, as well as videos of the speeches and such.

I am not a huge royal watcher and could honestly care less if they came to visit. I am irked that I will be paying for the trip and they won’t even be stopping near here, but whatever. If I have to pay for it, I will at least enjoy watching to see how badly her clothes game goes. I wonder if she will drag out the flannel for when they head north?

    http://globalnews.ca/news/2939729/royal-tour-2016-day-1-duke-and-duchess-of-cambridge-begin-tour-in-victoria-b-c/

  48. Rapunzel says:

Oh my, Dailyfail making an issue of Charlotte apparently having a bruise on her knee?

Much as I loathe the laziness of the Cambridges, when the press acts this way, I can see why they wanna stay home.

Re: Kate’s appearance, the nude shoes are the only issue I have. Elongating the leg like this is so dumb.

  49. herladyship says:

George does look tall here! Maybe it’s the more grown up shoes. I don’t often say this, but Kate looks great.

  50. cerys says:

For once, she is dressed appropriately for the occasion despite the blah shoes. I feel sorry for the children being paraded at what was midnight in London time for a bit of positive PR for their workshy parents. I hope Maria got a nap on the plane as she is the one who is going to have to deal with their struggle to adjust to the time difference.

  51. Kitty says:

She is dressed great this time around, but I still think she and William should not be king and queen in the future.

  52. Christine says:

Eep I was there yesterday for the welcome ceremony!! Kate looked stunning in person and so very slim. Wills is quite bald from the back bahaa. They were lovely and spoke to SO many people as they made their way through the crowds. William made a speech which included a sweet part about thanking Canada for the kindness we have always shown to his grandmother over her 90 years. Justin Trudeau and Sophie also looked great and were very down to earth laughing as people in the crowd yelled for their attention before the Royals arrived.

    • Kitty says:

So are they popular in Canada than Harry is?

    • bcgirl says:

man, all of that rock star screaming they received,
I’m generally curious, do people “WOO!” en masse at them like that in other countries? It sounded…weird.

      • msthang says:

bcgirl, I think it is becoming rarer and rarer in merry old England, Diana would have gotten triple the crowds every where she went !!

  53. babyb says:

as a Canadian I am mad we paid for these useless figurehead’s overindulgent trip! b

    • Jaded says:

Me too – and I’m a Victoria resident but couldn’t be bothered to walk the 3 blocks to check them out.

      I want my money back.

    • mazzie says:

      Same. Ugh.

    • hogtowngooner says:

Same here. And look, I’m definitely not a monarchist so that makes me biased, but I’d be okay with this little jaunt if we heard more about what they’re here to talk about and what action comes out of the meetings with these two. But the press is blathering on about what the CHILDREN are doing and what CLOTHES Kate’s wearing. That’s not a good return on investment of hosting these two twits.

  54. A Fan says:

Kate looked lovely! She looked beautiful on TV – even better than the pictures. In fact, they all looked good and happy.

    [*Welcome back!*]

  55. Victoriasfan says:

Kate needs to step-up the fashion game. Her choices are quite matronly and boring! You know how the Queen Elisabeth has like the same clothes in every color of the rainbow? That’s how Kate’s choices are lately. They all look the same! She could take really some tips from the Swedish royalty! Princesses Victoria, Madeleine and Sofia each have great sense of style.

  56. notasugarhere says:

The thumbnail for this story shows how Kate Middleton really feels about working.

    • Citresse says:

      Doesn’t it though???
Keep in mind, I watched W&K arrival by satellite feed and thought immediately she looked tired. Rough flight? I don’t know, but she looked better on arrival in NZ in 2014 and consider was many more flying hours.

  57. Unoriginal Commenter says:

I think Kate looks particularly lovely in these photos and I am dying over Charlotte’s shoes. I want them for my three year old!

William should never stand/sit/etc. directly next to Justin Trudeau ever again.

  58. Sunshine Gold says:

Charlotte looks just like the queen.

  59. Kate Bush says:

Love Kate’s outfit and her hat. Giving me fancy airline hostess vibes though. I must say I don’t think it’s fair to criticise the lines on her face just because she doesn’t pump it full of fillers. I have those lines on either side of my mouth and I’m not underweight or a smoker , I think it’s in the genes.

  60. Narak says:

I wonder if William practises that look in a mirror.

  61. paddyjr says:

The dress looks good on her and I like the fascinator. The nude shoes have got to go: in the first picture it looks like she’s barefoot or has webbed feet! William looks good and the kids are really adorable.

  62. Lilacflowers says:

She’s the sort of woman Tom Hiddleston should be with. Tom’s a dab hand at breaking up relationships so I can dream.

  63. tracy says:

Charlotte and George are unattractive kids how could their shopaholic mum dress them solo horribbly?????

  64. Alie says:

I had to look up the Trudeaus and double check their ages. I just had to. They look so young standing next to the Cambridges.

  65. MinnFinn says:

Today (Monday) they are visiting a rain forest. I predict Kate will wear jeggings. And if we’re lucky she’ll also wear wedges and a striped top. #snark
