Jennifer Aniston has been wearing an ‘evil eye’ necklace to ward off curses

FFN_Aniston_Jenn_GGFF_092616_52185815

As we discussed yesterday, Jennifer Aniston flew to New York late last week. She was in LA when the Brangelina Split news broke, and paparazzi were apparently camped outside of her property, so she wanted to get out of town. She was always scheduled to go to New York, but I think she changed her travel plans so she could get to NYC ahead of Justin Theroux, who is also in town for the promotional tour of The Girl on the Train.

These are photos of Jennifer leaving her apartment building on Monday – Justin wasn’t with her. But the paparazzi swarmed, because of course they did. And some eagle-eyed style people noticed something funny about Aniston’s ensemble: she was wearing a Jennifer Meyer necklace, but it was something a little bit different. Jennifer wore a $3500 “evil eye” pendant. Here’s a closer look:

As Us Weekly notes, the “evil eye” is an ancient symbol believed to ward off curses and other bad juju. As in, one would wear the evil eye if one believed that something bad was about to happen soon. This particular necklace costs $3500 and it’s made of yellow gold, with lapis and turquoise. Personally, I think people who wear turquoise probably need all the help they can get. Seriously, with all of Jennifer’s money, she’s wearing turquoise?!? Also: her mules are Gucci and they look too small for her. And bonus SmartWater pap stroll!

    That necklace is painfully ugly.
And I feel sorry for her. She feels betrayed and thinks she can hold evil away with pageant stuff. Good luck with that.

    • SM says:

Copy that. Overall her street style looks like she got stuck in the 90’s and not the best option of the 90s style. Maybe this is why the media is still living it like Brad just left. She just seems to be stuck somewhere in the past.

      • perplexed says:

Aren’t a lot of the styles of today from the 90s though? I see women wearing jeans like that with the cuff rolled up nowadays. Fashion isn’t changing much in general. All the change seems to be happening in technology.

    • Frida says:

$3500?! It looks like it’s from Claires. She’s never left the 90s, ever.

    • Seraphina says:

First off, Jennifer is half Greek so I’m sure she is wearing that evil eye partly due to her heritage (as I do). I choose to wear a small one. I am a Christian and I still wear one. It may be considered pagean to some but it’s also part of the culture.

I do find the piece to be a bit big for my taste though. And I Too think it’s a bit harsh to give Turquoise a bad rap. I have diamonds and I have turquoise. I have fine jewelry and I have costume.

No news here expect she paid an atrocious amount for that necklace.

      • LeAnn Stinks says:

I doubt that, as Jennifer Meyer (her husband is Tobey Maguire) is a personal friend to Aniston, as she is to many other female celebrities, who adorn her jewelry. I am sure Jennifer A. got it gratis, or at minimal cost.

I guess Meyer thinks by having all of her celebrity friends wear her pieces, she gets endless free publicity and press.

And yes, wearing an evil eye, and hanging it on doors, etc., is very popular in the Greek culture.

      • I agree. This story was Meh for me as well. She’s Greek. So what? And yes, she paid WAAAAY too much for that. A $3500 evil eye necklace looks a lot like a $15 one.

  2. Kristen says:

    Hey! I like turquoise!

    • Ariadne says:

Me too! Not sure why people who wear it ‘need all the help they can get’. It suits some of us.

      • eggy weggs says:

I had a vintage ring featuring turquoise, metal plumes and a florette. I lost it somewhere, sometime (probably in the pocket of a purse I got rid of) and my heart misses it like the desert misses the rain. I will spend the rest of my life trying to find that ring, or some facsimile of it.

      • gwen says:

I know. What a distasteful comment. turquoise is fabulous.

      • Matilda says:

Not only that but Turquoise has always been used in Greek jewellery or was when I used to visit up to about 10 years ago.

      • LeAnn Stinks says:

It is very popular stone in South Western/Native American jewelry. I happen to love Native American jewelry and I think it defies a time period.

      • Amanda says:

Because people love to bash jen over absolutely anything
I’m part Turkish and Syrian and I have one in turquoise.
If this was Angelina or any other favorite on this site they would be gushing about how gorgeous it is.smh

      • Liberty says:

Vogue and WWD like turquoise, and it is trending back up for SS16 and 17.

Whole pages of pinterest are devoted to the fresh combo of Turq and gold.

I like good turquoise pieces, though I don’t’ wear it often — I like it lately paired with unexpected fabrics (i.e. not just denim).

    • Hejhej says:

I like it too but I grew up in 90′ so maybe that’s why 😀

    • sherry says:

Me too! My husband just gave me a necklace and earring set that’s turquoise and 18kt gold. It’s one of my favorite combinations. The only thing that would have made it better is if there were diamonds mixed in!

    • paranormalgirl says:

      I adore turquoise.

    • Wren says:

Same! I have a couple really nice turquoise pieces. I don’t get the hate for it at all. It’s beautiful and inexpensive. I think the disdain might come from the “rhinestone country girl” look accessorized with the gaudiest turquoise money can buy. But any type of jewelry can look tacky if you go overboard, and anything can be made gaudy.

    • Wurstbonbon says:

      Turquoise is the best! <3
That eye looks like a turkish nazar.
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazar_(amulet)

    • KiddVicious says:

I love turquoise. I’m not thrilled with a lot the styles used with turquoise, but for the most part I think it’s beautiful. I’m a hippie at heart and turquoise, azurite and malachite take me back to my youth.

    • MC2 says:

When I see turquoise jewelry I think of the Native American jewelry that I saw as a kid growing up in the Pacific NW so I thought the comment was odd…..but that’s why my mind goes. I am not in a “western wear” part of the country, though, so I didn’t know the context that Wren gave above. When I saw the jewelry it was usually done by an artist and not so cheap. Or at least not cheap to my standards.

ETA: There seems to be a turquoise revolt happening here. I am hoping that there is a post tomorrow showing someone with beautiful turquoise jewelry and a compliment on it….

      • Wren says:

Inexpensive in relation to many gemstones. Good jewelry isn’t cheap but turquoise jewelry is generally more on the affordable end.

      • BrandyAlexander says:

It was fabulous when Cate Blanchett wore it. I loved it because I already owned a necklace that looks just like this (though NOT Tiffany). All my friends asked to borrow it after she wore this.

    • Seraphina says:

Me too! Has anyone see the crown Napoleon had made for His empress???? Stunning comes to mind.

    • Amanda says:

      Seriously?
She’s half Greek and most evil eye necklaces are turquoise
      What is the big deal?

  3. Louise177 says:

I don’t see anything wrong with turquoise but this necklace costs $3500?

  4. Jegede says:

    Aw geez.

Aniston is super tight with Jen Meyer.
And has always worn her jewellry – earrings, necklaces, bracelets (including yes this evil eye one!) – both in her films and real life for many years now.

    But now it’s an issue?
US Weekly stays reaching to trying to inject Aniston into *that* news story.
By front door or back door.

    • Kate says:

Right? She’s just wearing a piece from her close friends range, as she almost always is. Judging by how many of Meyer’s friends have been seen wearing this necklace or the matching earrings, I’d assume she gifted this particular design to her circle when they launched months ago. There’s absolutely no story here.

    • Marny says:

glad i’m not the only one. she’s worn this before- how is it a story?!

    • doofus says:

to add, those “evil eye” necklaces are EVERYWHERE, and have always been a staple at every hippy-dippy shop I’ve even been in. right up there with the peace sign, the hamsa (hand pendant), pot leaf, celtic cross, etc.

this is no big thing, IMO. but if it fits someone’s narrative about how she’s “SO OMG WORRIED that Justin is gonna dump her!” then it’ll go that way.

  5. Megan says:

I guess I need help because I love turquoise.

  6. Carmen says:

Can’t she buy shoes that fit? Her heels are hanging out the back.

  7. Nev says:

Turquoise is happening!!!! And so are her Gucci slides!

  8. Lora says:

I love her ensamble in this pics

  9. Pansy says:

I LOVE turquoise! Turquoise and black, turquoise and white, turquoise and red, turquoise and coral, chunky turquoise……ok maybe I do need help!

    • Carmen says:

It’s an easy color to wear because it’s one of the very few that complements any skin tone.

    • GingerCrunch says:

Lol! People may need help from ugly turquoise, but I get that hers is a Greek symbol so no judgement there. I was lucky enough to spend a few years living in New Mexico and that will solidify your love of all things turquoise!!!

    • lucy2 says:

Love what you love. Life is too short to worry about such things.

  10. bokaki says:

I’m greek and the ”eye” is part of our culture. We wear them as jewellery or hang them in our homes. I have noticed Aniston wearing this necklace since June…so I don’t think it is a big deal.

    • Lucy2 says:

Jennifer is Greek as well, isn’t she?
Funny that something she’s been doing for months will now be interpreted as some comment on the situation she is not even part of.

      • Jusayin says:

That’s what I came on to say. I grew up in a predominantly Greek neighborhood. All my friends and neighbors wore this type of necklace. And being that she’s Greek I’m sure it’s not a new thing for her to wear.

      • Tiny Martian says:

Yup, I was going to say the exact same thing. Jen’s Greek, and I think it’s nice when people wear jewelry that celebrate their cultural heritage!

      • mar_time says:

Same is true for us Armenians as well, as soon as a baby’s born they have some sort of evil eye pinned on them. I’d prefer her necklace if the circle were smaller but yeah I feel like she’s worn it in the past….no story

    • Barrett says:

Exactly all my Greek friends wear these. She’s Greek. No story!

      • Cleopatra says:

This is true in turkey as well. They are everywhere: car rear view mirrors, key chains, jewelry, and people hang them in apartments facing the door to ward off bad luck from entering. I have many in various forms and sizes I’ve been given over the years since marrying into a Turkish family.

    • Anthi says:

A Greek here too. True it is a common thing to wear as jewelry and has become quite trendy the last few years specially in the summer considering turquoise is a colour Greeks associate with summer. I have seen Aniston wear “eyes” like that in the past.

    • doofus says:

I recently bought a ring at a jewelry store that had a Greek name (Constantine, I think) and the receipt/card I got had a bead version of one of these attached to it with a safety pin.

  11. ladysussex says:

An evil eye charm is supposed to ward off the negative energy (or curse) that comes specifically from envy. They are most widely used in Turkey and Greece, and somewhat in the Middle East and surrounding region. In Turkey you will see them EVERYWHERE. Most shopping bags have them and even women who get engaged will wear an evil eye decal on the nail of their ring finger. Most people really believe it protects them from the negative energy that envy produces, but it’s also a way of saying “Look what I have. Jealous?”

    • Zimmerman says:

I am in Greece and agree with everything you said, but had never heard it was a way to show off what you had, more like to protect your health and that sort of thing.

I think Jennifer’s is a little too big. There are classier versions.

      What’s wrong with turquoise?

    • Sullivan says:

Interesting. That sounds like something she’d wear.

  12. MrsBPitt says:

Gosh, I wish I had her figure (I did years ago)….since menopause (too much info??) I have gained so much weight and don’t feel the energy to do anything about it…Sorry for oversharing, just feeling like jabba the hut today!

I don’t think the necklace it that bad!

    • Little Darling says:

Aww Mrs.P I’m in perimenopause and it’s wrecked havoc on my skin, my chin, my energy levels and awful heat flashes!! Sorry hon! Xo

    • cindy says:

Me too. I hate it, I hate it. I don’t care about the looks I can accept that loss, but peri menopause does not like me at all and my health feels so awful even though I have taken such care to be healthy for a dozen years. Jennifer Anniston does look really good though. She’s a few years older than me and I look way worse for the wear that’s for sure! 🙁

I also love turquoise, when did that become tacky lol?

    • eggy weggs says:

I googled “turquoise” and “menopause” in the hopes that wearing turquoise would help give you energy and ease any other symptoms of menopause. I found a blog that calls menopause the Turquoise Years. In fact, the blog itself if called The Turquoise Years. Get on it, ladies!

  13. cleveland girl says:

Everyone needs a little help warding off negativity. I wish I had this necklace.

  14. paolanqar says:

I do think she is slightly happy about Brangelexit but not to the point where she will wear jewelry against curses or speak to the press about it.
    This is a non-story. Honestly.

    • MrsBPitt says:

I don’t think Anniston would be human, if she didn’t find a small nugget of satisfaction that B and A are over….

  15. Black Queen says:

Awwww. Love her she’s an inspiration to all women the way she conducted her life these past 12 years is beyond exemplary. Kudos girl. With, without and in spite of a man you shine. 😘😘

    • Carmen says:

Surely you jest. Getting dumped and re-dumped by John Mayer and sundry others whose names escape me because they never mattered to begin with, and becoming an Internet joke with her bajillion “baby bumps…” Not the way I’d advise anyone to live their life but I suppose she’s harmless, so there’s that.

      • L84Tea says:

That’s the press that have done that to her. All the baby bump stories and still-pining-for-Brad stories have all been the press making her into that caricature. I think Jen has conducted herself extremely well considering what the media has done to her.

      • Carmen says:

Allow me to respectfully disagree. I don’t know why her partisans treat her like a fragile flower that must be protected from all criticism or she will wilt into the ground. She could have put the kibosh on all those ridiculous stories ten years ago if she had wanted to, but she allowed them to proliferate as long as it served her agenda of keeping her face on the tabloid covers.

      • Lalu says:

I don’t know what ridiculous stories she was supposed to put the kibosh on. That she may have a baby one day? Maybe like a lot of women she did want children but it never happened due to relationships or maybe even health issues. I don’t understand how someone so boring gets anyone so upset.

  16. Bex says:

    What’s wrong with turquoise?

  17. SusanneToo says:

    Lots of us love turquoise.

    http://goo.gl/images/Pufs1Z

  18. Marie says:

I think she’s been wearing that same outfit since 1998. Girl has her one look.

P.S. Had no clue turquoise was offensive ….

  19. lilacflowers says:

Second thread in as many days featuring Gucci slides/slippers that we can laugh at!

  20. Mar says:

Jennifer is always a snooze fest to me.
    I love turquoise too!

  21. Becki says:

I like turquoise! And, I feel like I’ve seen her and other celebrities wear the evil eye before, so I don’t think this is anything new for her. HATE the shoes!! UGH, soooooo fugly.

  22. Colette says:

Necklace is much ado about nothing unless Heidi Bivens threatened her( just kidding).

I’m just happy she stop wearing those scarves around her neck. It’s one thing, when it’s winter…but she used to wear them year round.

  23. Carmen says:

    That hair, though…

    • Amanda says:

Jen will never change her hair
She is to set in her ways
She would love much but better as a brunette though imo

  24. Paisley says:

I like her ensemble, but I’m always behind the times. 😀

I don’t care for Jennifer Meyer jewelry, but turquoise is great.

  25. EM says:

She is Greek. Greeks tend to wear these, as do Turks…etc.

  26. Michelina says:

I’m not particularly a fan, but she’s Greek and the evil eye, known as Nazar in Greek, is a huge thing in Greek culture. They’ve become really popular with celebrities recently.

  27. KiddVicious says:

I love her shoes but could never wear that style. I have a high instep so the shoes would never go completely on my foot and the first step would fling the shoe across the room. So, sadly I had to sit out that trend.

  28. The Original G says:

I don’t get why she wears that hat in NYC?

  29. Frosty says:

Here’s a quote from Justin T about the Pitt Split. Very reasonable, no?
    https://finance.yahoo.com/news/jennifer-anistons-husband-comments-brad-120359411.html

    • Mikeyangel says:

Yes actually quite classy imo. I was a huge Aniston fan, thought Jolie was a home wrecker. Over time Angie won me with her humanitarian work, Aniston not so much with all her Cabo trips. Thought Pitt just chose poorly in the past and him and Jolie were the real thing. Now, I have come to the conclusion (outside their all human no one is perfect blah blah blah) Jen A is pretty wrapped up in herself (no big deal) and hard marketed to the mini van moms (I am one), but is fairly inoffensive and whatever. Jolie was a wild child, something changed (maybe her desire to be a mom maybe just saw how blessed/lucky she was and really felt a ‘calling’ to help the world at large. She a pretty amazing person publicly, puts her money where her mouth are, and I genuinely can’t hate her. I think Brad is and always had been a pretty boy d-bag, slightly too into himself also, which in and of itself isn’t harmful, unless you have kids or a wife you are seriously disappointing. He met someone fantastic, tried and sometimes succeeded in being as philanthropic and do-good, but ultimately is who he is, someone who like to use/abuse alcohol and/or substances at times, and kind of likes the Hollywood life at least a little. I have always though Justin T. was a d-bag, but thought his response was pretty decent.

      • Frosty says:

They are all ok by me Mikeangel – they all have to stay in the public eye, part of their job, etc. What I like about Jolie is she plays the game by her own rules and in his own way so has Brad. I like Aniston because in this crazy, TayTay world, she’s low key. Hauling around her SmartWater and minding her business pretty much.

  30. Jeanette says:

Besides her being Greek I think the necklace is fine. I love pieces that have a bit of a story to them! Its interesting, and I would wear it too.

  31. Candace says:

She’s Greek Orthodox, that’s what they wear.

  32. NGBoston says:

Those mules really ARE too small for her. hahahah

    That’s all I’ve got.

  33. MellyMel says:

I love her whole outfit, necklace included. It’s basically my uniform on the weekends. Also I need those shoes. Maybe not the Gucci versions cause $$$ but a pair like it for fall.

  34. kanyekardashian says:

Jennifer is Greek, just like me. She most likely grew up with the Evil Eye, like I did. No news here.

  35. kri says:

The Evil Eye has always been huge in the Med countries, but really began in Egypt with the Eye of Horus as a protection symbol. My background is a mix of Euro/Mediterranean and I am a Byzantine Catholic, and have always had an eye. The ONLY time i like turquoise is when it’s done this way-but that’s just me. Some stones speak to you, some don’t.

  36. Tara says:

I too can’t with turquoise. I think it’s from the overabundance of it in large silver settings in AZ, where I grew up, that makes for my gut reaction against it. I know it doesn’t make sense, but I want it nowhere near me.

  37. Mrs. Odie says:

I work in a community that is heavily Armenia, Greek, and Persian. Every woman and teenage girl I know wears and evil eye bracelet. It’s a cultural thing. Isn’t Aniston Greek?

  38. Vox says:

why so judgy about people who wear turquoise? Sheesh. It’s one thing to dislike a stone and another to insult people who wear it.

  39. Vanessa says:

Non story. Her father is Greek! Every single Greek I know (all my in-laws) adorn themselves in eyes. I’ve been wearing one myself since I met my husband. She’s not draping herself in garlic….

  40. Nesrina says:

.It’s meant to ward off the evil eye from others who would want to stop their success. Evil eye jewelry is a special kind of jewelry. It helps ward off all evil eyes from you and creates a protective shield against you.
See more similar styles with evil eye designs at evileyestore.com

  41. kwilly says:

    1. She’s Greek, and the symbol holds a lot of meaning in Greek culture. 2. This isn’t the first time she’s worn variations of the symbol, so “lol” to the tabloids trying to, ONCE AGAIN, make it about Brad, her potential marital turmoil, or probably her lack of baby she clearly desperately wants…./s. 3. My mom loves turquoise…. 🙁
