As we discussed yesterday, Jennifer Aniston flew to New York late last week. She was in LA when the Brangelina Split news broke, and paparazzi were apparently camped outside of her property, so she wanted to get out of town. She was always scheduled to go to New York, but I think she changed her travel plans so she could get to NYC ahead of Justin Theroux, who is also in town for the promotional tour of The Girl on the Train.
These are photos of Jennifer leaving her apartment building on Monday – Justin wasn’t with her. But the paparazzi swarmed, because of course they did. And some eagle-eyed style people noticed something funny about Aniston’s ensemble: she was wearing a Jennifer Meyer necklace, but it was something a little bit different. Jennifer wore a $3500 “evil eye” pendant. Here’s a closer look:

As Us Weekly notes, the “evil eye” is an ancient symbol believed to ward off curses and other bad juju. As in, one would wear the evil eye if one believed that something bad was about to happen soon. This particular necklace costs $3500 and it’s made of yellow gold, with lapis and turquoise. Personally, I think people who wear turquoise probably need all the help they can get. Seriously, with all of Jennifer’s money, she’s wearing turquoise?!? Also: her mules are Gucci and they look too small for her. And bonus SmartWater pap stroll!

Aren’t a lot of the styles of today from the 90s though? I see women wearing jeans like that with the cuff rolled up nowadays. Fashion isn’t changing much in general. All the change seems to be happening in technology.

First off, Jennifer is half Greek so I’m sure she is wearing that evil eye partly due to her heritage (as I do). I choose to wear a small one. I am a Christian and I still wear one. It may be considered pagean to some but it’s also part of the culture.
I do find the piece to be a bit big for my taste though. And I Too think it’s a bit harsh to give Turquoise a bad rap. I have diamonds and I have turquoise. I have fine jewelry and I have costume.
No news here expect she paid an atrocious amount for that necklace.
I doubt that, as Jennifer Meyer (her husband is Tobey Maguire) is a personal friend to Aniston, as she is to many other female celebrities, who adorn her jewelry. I am sure Jennifer A. got it gratis, or at minimal cost.
I guess Meyer thinks by having all of her celebrity friends wear her pieces, she gets endless free publicity and press.
And yes, wearing an evil eye, and hanging it on doors, etc., is very popular in the Greek culture.
I agree. This story was Meh for me as well. She’s Greek. So what? And yes, she paid WAAAAY too much for that. A $3500 evil eye necklace looks a lot like a $15 one.

I had a vintage ring featuring turquoise, metal plumes and a florette. I lost it somewhere, sometime (probably in the pocket of a purse I got rid of) and my heart misses it like the desert misses the rain. I will spend the rest of my life trying to find that ring, or some facsimile of it.

It is very popular stone in South Western/Native American jewelry. I happen to love Native American jewelry and I think it defies a time period.

I like good turquoise pieces, though I don’t’ wear it often — I like it lately paired with unexpected fabrics (i.e. not just denim).

Me too! My husband just gave me a necklace and earring set that’s turquoise and 18kt gold. It’s one of my favorite combinations. The only thing that would have made it better is if there were diamonds mixed in!

Same! I have a couple really nice turquoise pieces. I don’t get the hate for it at all. It’s beautiful and inexpensive. I think the disdain might come from the “rhinestone country girl” look accessorized with the gaudiest turquoise money can buy. But any type of jewelry can look tacky if you go overboard, and anything can be made gaudy.

I love turquoise. I’m not thrilled with a lot the styles used with turquoise, but for the most part I think it’s beautiful. I’m a hippie at heart and turquoise, azurite and malachite take me back to my youth.
When I see turquoise jewelry I think of the Native American jewelry that I saw as a kid growing up in the Pacific NW so I thought the comment was odd…..but that’s why my mind goes. I am not in a “western wear” part of the country, though, so I didn’t know the context that Wren gave above. When I saw the jewelry it was usually done by an artist and not so cheap. Or at least not cheap to my standards.
ETA: There seems to be a turquoise revolt happening here. I am hoping that there is a post tomorrow showing someone with beautiful turquoise jewelry and a compliment on it….
Inexpensive in relation to many gemstones. Good jewelry isn’t cheap but turquoise jewelry is generally more on the affordable end.
It was fabulous when Cate Blanchett wore it. I loved it because I already owned a necklace that looks just like this (though NOT Tiffany). All my friends asked to borrow it after she wore this.

to add, those “evil eye” necklaces are EVERYWHERE, and have always been a staple at every hippy-dippy shop I’ve even been in. right up there with the peace sign, the hamsa (hand pendant), pot leaf, celtic cross, etc.

It’s an easy color to wear because it’s one of the very few that complements any skin tone.

I’m greek and the ”eye” is part of our culture. We wear them as jewellery or hang them in our homes. I have noticed Aniston wearing this necklace since June…so I don’t think it is a big deal.

That’s what I came on to say. I grew up in a predominantly Greek neighborhood. All my friends and neighbors wore this type of necklace. And being that she’s Greek I’m sure it’s not a new thing for her to wear.

This is true in turkey as well. They are everywhere: car rear view mirrors, key chains, jewelry, and people hang them in apartments facing the door to ward off bad luck from entering. I have many in various forms and sizes I’ve been given over the years since marrying into a Turkish family.

A Greek here too. True it is a common thing to wear as jewelry and has become quite trendy the last few years specially in the summer considering turquoise is a colour Greeks associate with summer. I have seen Aniston wear “eyes” like that in the past.
I recently bought a ring at a jewelry store that had a Greek name (Constantine, I think) and the receipt/card I got had a bead version of one of these attached to it with a safety pin.
An evil eye charm is supposed to ward off the negative energy (or curse) that comes specifically from envy. They are most widely used in Turkey and Greece, and somewhat in the Middle East and surrounding region. In Turkey you will see them EVERYWHERE. Most shopping bags have them and even women who get engaged will wear an evil eye decal on the nail of their ring finger. Most people really believe it protects them from the negative energy that envy produces, but it’s also a way of saying “Look what I have. Jealous?”
I am in Greece and agree with everything you said, but had never heard it was a way to show off what you had, more like to protect your health and that sort of thing.
I think Jennifer’s is a little too big. There are classier versions.

Me too. I hate it, I hate it. I don’t care about the looks I can accept that loss, but peri menopause does not like me at all and my health feels so awful even though I have taken such care to be healthy for a dozen years. Jennifer Anniston does look really good though. She’s a few years older than me and I look way worse for the wear that’s for sure! 🙁

Surely you jest. Getting dumped and re-dumped by John Mayer and sundry others whose names escape me because they never mattered to begin with, and becoming an Internet joke with her bajillion “baby bumps…” Not the way I’d advise anyone to live their life but I suppose she’s harmless, so there’s that.
That’s the press that have done that to her. All the baby bump stories and still-pining-for-Brad stories have all been the press making her into that caricature. I think Jen has conducted herself extremely well considering what the media has done to her.
Allow me to respectfully disagree. I don’t know why her partisans treat her like a fragile flower that must be protected from all criticism or she will wilt into the ground. She could have put the kibosh on all those ridiculous stories ten years ago if she had wanted to, but she allowed them to proliferate as long as it served her agenda of keeping her face on the tabloid covers.
I don’t know what ridiculous stories she was supposed to put the kibosh on. That she may have a baby one day? Maybe like a lot of women she did want children but it never happened due to relationships or maybe even health issues. I don’t understand how someone so boring gets anyone so upset.

I’m not particularly a fan, but she’s Greek and the evil eye, known as Nazar in Greek, is a huge thing in Greek culture. They’ve become really popular with celebrities recently.
I love her shoes but could never wear that style. I have a high instep so the shoes would never go completely on my foot and the first step would fling the shoe across the room. So, sadly I had to sit out that trend.

Yes actually quite classy imo. I was a huge Aniston fan, thought Jolie was a home wrecker. Over time Angie won me with her humanitarian work, Aniston not so much with all her Cabo trips. Thought Pitt just chose poorly in the past and him and Jolie were the real thing. Now, I have come to the conclusion (outside their all human no one is perfect blah blah blah) Jen A is pretty wrapped up in herself (no big deal) and hard marketed to the mini van moms (I am one), but is fairly inoffensive and whatever. Jolie was a wild child, something changed (maybe her desire to be a mom maybe just saw how blessed/lucky she was and really felt a ‘calling’ to help the world at large. She a pretty amazing person publicly, puts her money where her mouth are, and I genuinely can’t hate her. I think Brad is and always had been a pretty boy d-bag, slightly too into himself also, which in and of itself isn’t harmful, unless you have kids or a wife you are seriously disappointing. He met someone fantastic, tried and sometimes succeeded in being as philanthropic and do-good, but ultimately is who he is, someone who like to use/abuse alcohol and/or substances at times, and kind of likes the Hollywood life at least a little. I have always though Justin T. was a d-bag, but thought his response was pretty decent.
They are all ok by me Mikeangel – they all have to stay in the public eye, part of their job, etc. What I like about Jolie is she plays the game by her own rules and in his own way so has Brad. I like Aniston because in this crazy, TayTay world, she’s low key. Hauling around her SmartWater and minding her business pretty much.

Jennifer is Greek, just like me. She most likely grew up with the Evil Eye, like I did. No news here.
The Evil Eye has always been huge in the Med countries, but really began in Egypt with the Eye of Horus as a protection symbol. My background is a mix of Euro/Mediterranean and I am a Byzantine Catholic, and have always had an eye. The ONLY time i like turquoise is when it’s done this way-but that’s just me. Some stones speak to you, some don’t.
I too can’t with turquoise. I think it’s from the overabundance of it in large silver settings in AZ, where I grew up, that makes for my gut reaction against it. I know it doesn’t make sense, but I want it nowhere near me.
I work in a community that is heavily Armenia, Greek, and Persian. Every woman and teenage girl I know wears and evil eye bracelet. It’s a cultural thing. Isn’t Aniston Greek?
