Actress and singer Sara Ramirez is best known in her role as Dr. Calie Torres on Grey’s Anatomy. Sara, whose character Callie is bisexual, has always been a huge advocate for the LGBTQ community, in particular the LGBTQ homeless youth. She married longtime partner Ryan DeBoth four years ago but doesn’t speak much about her private life. Although asked repeatedly given her character’s storyline, she’s never definitively answered about her sexuality until now. Saturday, at the True Colors Fund’s 40 to None Summit, she gave an emotional speech about the struggles of growing up bisexual in a very religious Irish/Mexican family.

Here is the video of her full introduction:
The True Colors Fund was co-founded by Cyndi Lauper to end homeless among LGBTQ youth. The “40 to None” part of the summit’s title is in reference to the fact that approximately 40 percent of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ. Within that 40 percent, family rejection of sexual orientation or gender identity in the most cited factor for homelessness. The support of celebrities like Sara is vital to the fund. I think it is the perfect place for her to publicly confirm her orientation – good for her. You can read more about what’s going on in your neighborhood as well as ways to help True Colors here.
Just in case you aren’t familiar with Sara, as I said, she is best known for Callie on Grey’s – who was my favorite character until I tapped out after 2009. She left last season after 10 years but they didn’t kill her so she could always come back. However, Sara has an amazing voice (she’s Queen Miranda on Sofia the First) and had a career on Broadway before coming to TV. She won a Tony for Spamalot in 2005. The story is that ABC execs loved her so much in Spamalot, they offered her a role on any show on ABC and she chose Grey’s because she was such a fan. Not much news on what Sara will be doing next but in this 2009 interview she said, “Lin-Manuel (Miranda) and I have spoken a bunch of times. I blurted out that if anything were going to get me back to Broadway, it would be a musical that he wrote.” Fingers crossed.

Yaaay! Congrats to her!
Oh my god that hair. How do I put this… she definitely looks more bisexual now than before. I think it’s the buzzed sides that do it.
Oh yeah, you can always tell they’re bisexual by the hair
What a dumb comment.
You know, I’ve felt different since I got a new cut with the side buzzed. Must be that I’m gay. Thanks for clarifying – I had no idea that a haircut indicated sexuality.
Ridiculous.
Yay! ❤️
It always makes me happy to see another bisexual person come out & represent!
I remember seeing her in Spamalot, she was great! I liked her on Grey’s but I gave up after season 2 or 3. Glad she is doing well and living proudly.
I think it’s a waste for her to be in a non-singing role for so long.
She was fantastic as the Lady of the Lake…. the voice, the comedic timing….I hope she does something in that vein again.
I am happy for Sara Ramirez for coming out as bisexual, however I thought she was gay. So this was no surprised to me as Matt Bomer is gay ( happy for him, but sad for me because he is so cute and sexy). So, I am happy for her to stand in her truth. Though like I said, NOT SURPRISED.
Her voice! Remember the musical episode? Most of them were halfway decent, then she starts singing and I was like “oh, gosh. They all sucked!” She’s amaaaazing.
But darling, your hair?! Your beautiful hair….
Aww, this makes me happy – for her AND for myself.
Welcome out!
She was wonderful in Spamalot. I always thought Gray’s was beneath her.
I thought she came out like eight years ago???
I love her. I’m bi too and I am thrilled with all the folks raising awareness about it.
If you watch You’ve Got Mail (Hanks & Ryan), Sarah had a bit speaking part in it. She was the grocery clerk who got pissed that Meg was trying to pay her groceries with a credit card in the cash only line.
Love her singing. Her singing was the best in that gawd awful musical epi.
