We all remember this ^^ photo, right? When Miley Cyrus slyly posted this to Instagram, inviting the world to endlessly speculate about the status of her relationship with Liam Hemsworth? Apparently that face she’s making isn’t just one of her quirky mugs, it’s because of her diamond engagement ring. Miley appeared on Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show yesterday. When Ellen asked whether she was wearing her engagement ring, Miley showed it but mentioned she doesn’t always wear the ring because it’s not her style. According to Miley, “real jewelry” doesn’t jive with Gummi Bears and unicorns (says who?!)
“There is a photo that got a lot of attention of your engagement ring,” Ellen began, referring to her diamond sparkler from Liam Hemsworth that she first accepted in 2012. The couple broke off the engagement a year later.
“This is really weird because this is like real jewelry and most of my jewelry is made out of gummy bears and cotton candy and they don’t look that good together because they kind of mix up, so sometimes I replace it with an actual unicorn or a Looney tune,” the singer explained.
“And he’s kind of like what’s going on? It’s like, well, this isn’t really my aesthetic, but I’ll wear it because you love me.”
It might not be her typical style, but the bauble has serious sentimental value. “The ring is special because Miley and Liam worked on it together,” a source told E! News. “Miley specifically wanted it set in gold. She didn’t want platinum. She liked the gold because it was different and unique, like her. She didn’t want anything classic or generic.”
“He could have saved a lot of money by giving you like a gummy bear ring,” Ellen quipped.
I don’t totally understand, they worked on it together but it’s not her aesthetic? I am, however, with Miley on this. Not that I dislike her ring but that my jewelry is as much a part of my outfit as my clothes so I will switch out my wedding rings on occasion to match my look. The Mister also has a selection of bands he wears, but that’s because he loses them so he has spares. I’ve only ever paid attention to her ring in the header picture and have always liked it. But E! shows another shot of it from the side and the band is a little built up for me. It’s not bad, but it would not be my aesthetic either. (I like the ring she has on her middle finger, though.)
We discussed last week that Miley took a break from The Voice to campaign for Hillary Clinton. The following day, she performed at the Kennedy Honors for Bill Murray who was accepting the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Steve Martin, David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel and Sigourney Weaver saluted Bill as well but it was Miley who stood out. While performing Frank Sinatra’s “My Way,” Miley flubbed the lyrics. This happens – no biggie, right? Wrong. Instead of soldiering on and giving a quick mea culpa once finished, Miley announced, “I f**ked it up … Sorry guys. I got too stoned. I smoked too much and forgot,” mid-performance. Oh Miley, I am fine with your aesthetic but your stage decorum could use some polish.
Miley release a bunch of her personal photos to TIME of her trip back east that you can see here. I really want her American flag jacket – and her incredible figure.

Lol, since when is gold unique? That Miley is such a trendsetter….
This was my takeaway after reading the article, too. Since when is gold “different and unique”?! Her ring looks like the very definition of “classic” and/or “generic.” It’s lovely, but it’s like a stock photo of an engagement ring.
It’s really not generic – I’ve seen close ups of it before and it’s got an Art Nouveau design around the diamond. Very different and I like it.

It looks very much an Edwardian style to me, save the metal choice.
If they worked on the design together, why didn’t she choose a design more in style with her aesthetic? It can be done
I know, right? And I don’t get why she’s making all this public knowledge now.
Not odd that your style changes as you grow older.
And the design was a compromise to begin with.
Well between the time she got that ring and now she is wildly different
She has one of the most grating voices and manner of speaking. I remember watching The Voice with my grand (she loves it) and just wanting Miley to STOP TALKING. I also can’t enjoy her interviews because I hear her voice when reading them (much like the Kardashian-Jenners).
OMFG I thought my Mysophonia was getting outta hand , i Totally have a Violent reaction to the voices of everyone you mentioned, Like drives me Batshit!
(Ring related I do the same with a Very Lovely Mystic topaz ring my BF got me, used to wear it daily but Now im into ring stacking and Mixing and Matching metals and such and .. Well it just doesn’t go!, he got butthurt about it only One time to his credit!)
Miley is not my aesthetic.
…I read that interview…she also said she wears it because she loves him…which I thought was rly sweet…
I don’t think it is sweet when she says it isn’t her style, but she helped DESIGN it. Maybe don’t get engaged when you are still growing into yourself?! I mean that was not a cheap Neil Lane ring.
I understand what she’s saying. The ring I picked at 21 is not the ring that fits my personality at 30. I liked it then and it has sentimental value, but I don’t wear it often because it’s no longer “me.”
It’s a shame that people automatically dismiss what she’s saying as nonsense just because she’s the one saying it.
I agree about tastes changing over time. That’s what semi-mount settings are for! Switch it up now and then. We married in ’95- yellow gold solitaire ( he surprised me, I was too sensitive to take him up on changing the style). Mid -aughts changed it to white gold/ baguettes. Probably another ten years and setting will be changed again.
“Sorry guys I got too stoned” … This annoys me more than it should. She’s try-hard and exhausting!
I was at the Mark Twain Prize. She went on and on about she smoked too much and f-ed up the lyrics. She and Paul Shaffer ended up redoing their entire bit because the show was being taped for PBS. It was really annoying
I understand. Mine is not exactly my aesthetic, but it is simple so it can pretty much go with anything. It can be weird to pair costume jewellery with real diamonds.
She said that during the Kennedy Center Honors???? Seriously?! This girl: the epitome of grace and class.
she’s so full of crap, this kid. Beneath that I’m SO UNUSUAL façade is a very conventional, albeit driven and talented, young woman.
She ought to just get it redesigned. That ring is so ugly; it reminds me of a tacky design from the 80s that you might find in a pawn shop.
It is actually based on Edwardian design aesthetic:

Meh – I personally just don’t like wearing jewellery; especially rings, bracelets, or short necklaces. It’s a sensory thing for me.
I’ve been married for 13 years, and was engaged for 7 years before that.
I don’t remember when I last wore my engagement ring, and I almost never wear my wedding band.
That’s why I hate “ring watch” on people; it means nothing.
For Miley, I think that she believes that a ‘normal’ ring makes her seem too mainstream. And she desperately wants everyone to know that she is NOT mainstream! I also believe that Miley Cyrus likes to hear herself talk.
My midwestern husband has bought me a few pairs of earrings that looked like they were bought at a crafts fair. You know those trinkety looking bead things. That is so not me. Makes me feel like I’m twelve. I finally had to tell him “I don’t know how to tell you this but I don’t like jewelry that looks like it comes from from a crafts fair” to which he responded “Well I guess you just did.” I still feel badly about it but better to be honest than pile up more unwanted items I’ll never wear.
That is a difficult situation!
I despise Miley so I’m fairly mortified to even be writing this, but does anyone know the designer of that pink coat she’s wearing in the top photo? I love it! And I usually don’t like anything she wears, ever.
Heh, I think she was poking fun at herself with her comment. Classy ring? On this girl? No way.
I am weirdly invested in Liam and her, so I hope this works out for them.
