Benedict Cumberbatch on Twitter: ‘I find that whole thing ultimately very toxic’

wenn29908292

I remember when Twitter first started happening but there were only a few celebrities tweeting on a regular basis. I personally think Lindsay Lohan’s early days on Twitter probably did more harm than good for the cause of social media, but after a few years, everybody joined Twitter, celebrity or not. In fact, these days it’s actually sort of weird when a celebrity isn’t on social media at all. Even if you don’t want the no-filter engagement with fans or the general public, many public figures do find social media – Twitter especially – useful in promoting their charitable and professional work. I mean, even Leonardo DiCaprio is on Twitter! He just tweets about charity stuff, environmental stuff and film stuff. But Benedict Cumberbatch is no Leo DiCaprio. Benedict finds social media “ultimately very toxic,” thank you very much. From People:

His thoughts on social media: “I can’t get involved in social media because as they know, it’d be a disaster. I can’t tweet to save my life. I’d go over my character limits and never make any sense. It would just consume me and I find that whole thing ultimately very toxic. I’d much rather spend my energy doing what brought me to their attention in the first place, which is my work.”

Whether he dreams in character: “It’s usually, like a lot of actors, nightmares after the event, rather than during. It’s the way that brains work — it’s incredible, isn’t it? But you just get haunted by a moment, and suddenly you’re back playing a character that you dropped months or years [ago], and then you’re often onstage and often without a vital prop and sometimes without any clothes whatsoever and you can’t remember your lines. You’re looking at characters that are really familiar and the situation is half familiar, but suddenly you’re in a real room and the dream takes real odd turns, I don’t know. It’s so funny in the way we get haunted by our work as actors, I know I’m not alone in that. The naked thing, or running out or just completely forgetting what you’re saying is very fiercely real.”

[From People]

To be fair, considering his word-salad answers to simple questions like “are you enjoying fatherhood?” maybe Twitter is NOT for him. It would be such a chore for him to translate his alien-otter dialect into what humans call “tweets.” Now I’m picturing him tweeting sh-t like “the smooth is a good mum #motherofotters” and “My loyal, faithful and trusty Sophie understands my journey #hergreatestachievement.” He probably would be good at Instagram though.

(Seriously though, can we make #motherofotters into a thing?)

Meanwhile, Bendy is going to be on this weekend’s episode of The Graham Norton Show. Apparently, he chats about going to Comic-Con – “It is terrifying. They announce you like God is about to arrive, and you come through all the smoke and lights and booming soundtrack and just say, ‘hello.’ You feel like a tiny speck in this massive arena” – and working in Nepal and more. Eddie Redmayne is also a guest on the same episode. As is… LeAnn Rimes. Oh, God.

    Today’s haiku

    Benedict is work
    Social media, twitter
    Ullimate toxin

I do hope he doesn’t talk over Eddie again like he did on the actor’s round table during the Oscar campaign

As for his last SDCC appearance, he seemed quite willing to bask in the insanity until Feige directed him to the table so they could introduce Tillds

    • Sixer says:

Ultimate toxin made me laugh out loud.

    • Tough Cookie says:

Today’s haiku is perfection!! I bow to thee, Lightpurple.

    • Lightpurple says:

Thank you all. I will attempt a sonnet over the weekend

    • Kay says:

I actually agree with him on this. Social media on a whole seems more harmful than it’s worth. So much bullying, sexual harassment, etc. It’s given scumbags far wider reach.

Hell, it’s being reported that one of the reasons Twitter can’t find a buyer, ironically, is that it’s considered toxic. Bloomberg news called it a “blood sport.”

  2. OriginallyBlue says:

    Leanne Rimes? Lol oh gosh

  3. Sixer says:

He would be a total disaster on the Twatter, wouldn’t he? He would type nonsense and then cry when all the naysayers called him a See You Next Tuesday.

For this reason, I think he should do it.

LeAnn Rimes, of whom I would never have heard were it not for this site, did the singing gig on Strictly Come Dancing this week. My dad said, “Who is she? I really like her voice.” And I said, “Nope. You’re not allowed to like her, Dad. I learned that on the internet. I could tell you a story or two.”

    • Lightpurple says:

The MCU encourages its actors, particularly the leads, to have a social media presence so I’m surprised he still doesn’t have an account. It would be hilarious for reasons he wouldn’t understand

    • Lightpurple says:

@Sixer, totally off-topic, for which I apologize to all, especially as I loathe discussions of one on the other’s threads, but was just on the twatter where I saw a gif of somebody handing a Build-a-Bear in a Loki costume to LEGS.

  4. PaschaP says:

Blatherdict couldn’t fit his thoughts on one subject into one simple tweet.

His tweets would be links to screenshots, and those screenshots would contain walls of more world salad text he’d written about the subject of the day.

  5. Cee says:

I deleted my Twitter account because everything was getting too obnoxious, especially the ads.
He could definitely have an Instagram account run by his team, like many others do. It’s a good way of controling your image and what you communicate and also creating the illusion of proximity with your fans.

  6. Mia4S says:

Wow I love the Graham Norton show. Benedict Cumberbatch! Eddie Redmayne! LeAnn Rime…oh. Ummm, why?

Well two out of three ain’t bad! On second thought…this could be seriously entertaining.

  7. Phoebe says:

I think it’s a major mistake for someone as famous/popular as him not to have a presence on social media or the internet whatsoever (he doesn’t even have a webpage). He’s basically allowing his fangirls to be the go to place for information about him- so he has little to no control over it. His publicist even contacts one fangirl to debunk rumors or say if he’s going to make an appearance here or there. Does this putz not understand that HE doesn’t have to be the one tweeting and instagramming? You can hire a 25 year old to do that for you but then you and your team get to control the information, promote your work and pretend like you’re not a pretentious twit.

    • Cee says:

His niece could do it for him. It’s not that complicated.

      • Zapp Brannigan says:

Heck get his son to do it, wasn’t he just saying how supportive the wife and kid were of his career path, time to put those words into action Junior! There are no free loaders on Team Cumberbatch!

  8. NeoCleo says:

I’m not on: Twitter, Facebook, YouTube or any other social media. I barely use email.

I am old and I feel free!

  9. SilverUnicorn says:

I have a Twitter account and people retweeting my stuff allowed me to find others in my same situation in post-Brexit climate…. So no complaints there. However, my Facebook account was literally brought down by hate for the above mentioned reason so I can agree with Cumberbatch on this one, at least at some degree. Most of social media allow users to abuse others with no limits and even if it’s not always like that they are toxic indeed.

  10. Juniper says:

He probably also thinks twitter is the gathering place for craziest fans. I remember back then when he was getting married, those insane birthers who think his child is not real attacked his friends and co-workers on twitter and sent them hate and death threats and they continued bully them for months.

    • Meg D says:

They’re still doing it. Amanda Abington, that guy who runs Letters Live, and a few others still get loads of abuse, and anyone who tweets about seeing Ben with Sophie gets pretty bad harassment.

  11. Inas alsaadi says:

They look so much alike in the top photo, it is disturbing.

  12. Alexa Tomblin says:

Cuz he’s workaholic and very busy, he isn’t on social media.
However, his wife still has no employment and is middle aged Internet addiction lady. She only running her own fan site and sometimes foists pap pics upon tabloids.
Although she doesn’t take any part in BC’s movie at all, red carpet is the biggest chance for her publicity stunt. As you know, she never mind other talented costars.

    • Lightpurple says:

I always find this “he’s a workaholic and very busy” assertion puzzling and amusing. He goes months without working on anything at all. Right now, he’s promoting Strange, Sherlock ended filming a while ago and he has not been working. He didn’t work for the first six months of 2014.

      • Phoebe says:

Thank you Lightpurple! But so many actors and musicians say they are SOOOOOOOO busy and need a vacation so bad but really they work like 2 or 3 months at a time. Guess who works every single weekday, every day of every year, for 1/16th of what he makes in a week? MOST PEOPLE.

      • Lightpurple says:

@phoebe, actually, I’m not sure it is him so much in this case. I don’t know. I was referring to the frequent description of him by Cumberbitchs that he is such a workaholic when his projects and the calendar don’t seem to support that at all. I do realize that there is prep involved and promo work and sometimes projects fall through too but even still, he has had big chunks of time between projects over the past 3 years. There were also months between THC/SherlockTAB and Hamlet Pushing 40 too. Of course, someone will jump up to say there was no gap between Hamlet and Strange but that’s no different than the average person and there was a gap afterwards and now another long one post-Sherlock. And, except for about 3 weeks total shooting Strange on location, the bulk of his last five projects were all close to home. The “workaholic” label just doesn’t hold up for this guy, even in comparison to other actors.

      • Dessert says:

He went from Hamlet to Dr. Strange to Sherlock without more than a day between projects. After all this Dr. Strange promotion, he will start filming The Current War in a few weeks. By the way, acting involves a lot of research and preparation before filming ever begins, not to mention reading scripts and developing other work …but keep up that bitter narrative that you love so much.

      • emma ruby says:

You should know the words like “Pre-production”, “Rehearsal”, “Post-production”.
I’m not in drama industry, but I know that his work isn’t finished only filming.

      • Lightpurple says:

Why yes, I am aware of all those things. In fact, I DID mention them. And even still, he has had major chunks of time off over the past several years. Perhaps if he had spent some of those 6 months in 2014 doing some of that research you claim he does, he might have come up with a more accurate portrayal of Billy Bulger and not coughed up a mangled, extraterrestrial accent that earned him a special mention in Seth Meyer’s “Boston Accent” and a space on critic Ty Burr’s list of worst Boston accent attempt (Diane Lane holds first place). Most people go to work 5 days a week, without more than a two day break and nobody considers them workaholics. They’re considered grown-ups. And I’m not bitter about being a working grownup. But he is no workaholic and if we must discuss bitterness, how about that jab at his wife above?

      • Spiderpig says:

Current War starts production on 18 December, that’s closer to two months than “a few weeks.” And they’ll only be doing a few days of production work before the two-week Christmas and New Year break. So essentially Cumby has most of the rest of the year off and it’s barely Autumn.

Preproduction for actors is not that onerous, and I don’t know how Gomez-Rejon works but it’s relatively uncommon to have rehearsals in film. I’m looking at the Spotlight breakdown right now in another tab and it doesn’t mention any rehearsal period.

He’s certainly successful though. I don’t think him taking breaks sometimes says anything about his level of success. Don’t most movie stars do the same, 2-3 films a year with months off in-between?

@Spiderpig, thank you! And I always appreciate your insight.

      • Kay says:

Don’t know how busy he is overall but he’ll be promo for DS until the week after it comes out or so, then some promo for Sherlock (it airs 1/1/17). His production company is working with Studio Canal to develop a movie atm, so I’d guess that would eat some time, too. He also still does narration.

You don’t really know how busy an actor is for sure without having intimate details about their schedules and obligations. It’s not all going to be public things like promo and filming.

  13. Chantal says:

He does not have a thin skin. He will be crying everyday about the nasty things people says on Twitter. I think he is already depressed about rumors about him and family. That is why he is pushing the family angle so much. It gets under his skin. No family talk, PRIVACY!, next breath superhero wife!

  14. Mac says:

In his reddit AMA, Bendy gave a seriously long-winded answer (poor Victoria who had to type it all out I bet her fingers still ache) to a question about playing Assange and then someone replied to that: “here’s proof against a Bendy twitter” probably expecting it to go unnoticed, but it got upvoted pretty high because yeah, it’s a reddit AMA not a dissertation, and he answered that with:

“‘Julian complex important proud to have attempted an interpretation. Film out Oct. 18 #FifthEstate’ Hows that?” further proving the point.

  15. Pocketfluff says:

Talking about the internet, I saw a thing his wife was a former escort (of the no pants on her back kind!), why is this on a website? Surely you can get a legal team to pull it? Confused?! As in – you can’t just publish stuff like that can you? (without evidence). It’s scary!
I’m in the UK so maybe laws are different here?

    • Meg D says:

Meh, loads of crazy poo-poo gets spread on Tumblr, and celebs practically never respond to it. I can’t remember a celeb suing over things being said on blogs or forums, except in cases where it got picked up by the national press. Everyone apart from the sceptics knows it’s a fake story the sceptics invented (since it comes from hateblogs that literally photoshop Sophie’s face onto murder victims, and make 5,000 posts a day about how much they despise her and want to rescue Ben from her), especially since the photo they use as proof is from a photoshoot for a national magazine and was actually on a magazine cover.

There’s just no point in Ben and Sophie wasting a lot of time and money suing some random blogger, especially not when the blogger is an obsessed fan. Security experts usually advise that celebs do not engage with obsessed fans at all. Plus suing just brings it to public/media attention. Only a relatively small number of fans and haters who visit Tumblr are aware of the escort story and know where it came from, suing makes sure the whole world knows and you know some people would think there’s no smoke without fire. Streisand Effect.

      • Pocketfluff says:

This was on a proper website, admittedly a gossip one. I don’t believe it’s true (forgive me, she seems far too cold!), but i’m shocked bits like that are ‘out there’ without being taken down. Same with his child’s photo, why can’t it be removed with threat of legal action?
I think he is right to avoid social media etc, it must be frustrating trying to put the world to rights when everyone is saying your gay, your wife is a paid off escort etc. What a crappy ‘world’ to live in!

  16. Lorelai says:

He’s hosting Saturday Night Live tomorrow, too, which means he’s been in NYC all week rehearsing. I’m surprised he didn’t get paper at all (at least not any photos that I saw).

  17. cailindana says:

Not in NYC yet as he was seen and photographed at Mark Gatiss’ new play The Boys in the Band last night
