The 2017 Golden Globes nominations come out on Monday morning. Are you excited? I’m getting excited. What’s interesting is that, traditionally, people have looked at the Golden Globe film nominations as a way to figure out where the race is heading into the final months of the Oscar campaign. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (organizers of the Globes) do a good job of culling and figuring out who goes where. But in the lead up to this year’s nominations announcement, we already have a pretty good handle on who goes where, which races are competitive, and which categories are already in the bag. Note: this is just for film. The TV categories are wide open. So here are some my predictions!
Film categories:
Diversity. The HFPA is good at recognizing diverse talent, so I expect that they’ll once again want to “show up” the Academy Awards for the ongoing Oscars So White debacle. So I expect major nominations for Moonlight, Fences (directed by Denzel Washington, starring Denzel and Viola Davis) and even Lion (a nomination for Dev Patel, please). I’m really hoping Mahershala Ali gets nominated for Best Supporting Actor. And I’ve got my fingers crossed for Ruth Negga.
Actresses. Emma Stone is likely a shoo-in for Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical for La La Land. Ruth Negga will absolutely be shortlisted in Drama. Natalie Portman is also actively campaigning for Jackie (she’ll be in the Drama category), and Michelle Williams wants to be nominated for Supporting Actress. I suspect Nicole Kidman will be nominated for Supporting for Lion. If Viola doesn’t even get a nomination for Fences, I will be mad. Here’s what I’ll be looking for: any nominations for Amy Adams. She could be nominated for Arrival OR Nocturnal Animals. I could also see Annette Benning making a late run for her lead role in 20th Century Women. And don’t forget Meryl Streep in Florence Foster Jenkins.
Actors. Casey Affleck might have Best Actor wrapped up… or maybe not. I feel like support for him might be getting soft, but that will only work if there’s someone deemed “worthy.” Who could it be? Denzel? Jake Gyllenhaal for Nocturnal Animals? Viggo Mortensen in Captain Fantastic? Joel Edgerton in Loving? Tom Hanks in Sully? Andrew Garfield in Hacksaw Ridge OR Silence? I don’t know. Out of that list, I’m hoping for Joel and Jake. Also: I want Michael Shannon to get nominated for everything, please.
Television categories:
Miniseries/TV movies: Honestly, what excites me the most is the idea that Tom Hiddleston will get nominated for The Night Manager and he’ll bring his dragonfly realness to the Globes. PLEASE LET THIS HAPPEN. Please nominate The Night Manager for everything. (Also: do you think it’s possible that Hiddles would get a Musical Actor nomination for I Saw the Light?) Beyond that, we know what will likely sweep – People vs. OJ Simpson. Probably The Night Of.
Comedy: I expect the love-affair with Silicon Valley to continue, as well as the love affair with Modern Family and Veep. The HFPA is good at recognizing new shows too, so possibly some nominations for Atlanta and Insecure.
Drama. The drama categories will be jam-packed with an embarrassment of riches. Potential nominations will be coming for Game of Thrones, Westworld, Stranger Things, The Crown, This Is Us, Mr. Robot, possibly Outlander and Better Call Saul too. I predict Lena Headey will be one of the “breakout” nominations from GoT.

Biggest surprise for me would be Ryan Reynolds getting a nom for best actor in a musical/comedy. Word on the street is that it’s going to happen. So that would be surprising to me personally just because I never thought it would be possible.
Of course even if he were nominated he’s most likely losing to Ryan Gosling lol
Meryl Streep better not be nominated again for breathing! Not in a year with so many outstanding performances by women to choose from.
It’s a tight race in the Drama category, but Meryl would be in the Musical/Comedy category and that’s pretty wide open. Emma Stone is the lock of course and Annette Benning will be in there too, but otherwise there’s not much competition. Meryl will definitely be nominated.
Now if she gets an Oscar nod that will be a different story.
She might round out the comedy/music category but the person from that film who truly deserves recognition is Simon Helberg and his facial expressions
I am Streeped up to the eyebrows…she’s perfectly ok but not every bloody year…
I think Michael Keaton could swoop into the Best Actor race and start picking up awards. The Founder is just good with some hints of great, but Keaton is absolutely brilliant as Ray Kroc, and after Birdman and Spotlight he’s about due a win. If people are looking for an alternative to Affleck I think he’ll be it.
Can Westworld even get nominated this year? If so I hope Sir Anthony Hopkins, Thandie Newton and possibly Jeffrey Wright get recognized.
I finally got around to watching the night manager this week and liked it a lot. I must confess that as much as I read about Hiddleston on this site the only role I’d seen him in before was Loki (courtesy of my 11 year old) so I was pleasantly surprise to see how handsome and charming he can look! He has a great smile. Anyway, the real stR of the show was Hugh Laury, he should get all the awards!!
If you need to feed your Hiddlesneed, and aren’t allergic to Shakespeare, see if you can track down the first Hollow Crown series. IMO, he is at his most handsome and charming there – and has a real gift for making Elizabethan verse sound like modern speech.
I don’t think the US swooned over The Night Manager as much as the UK did, I’d say any awards here are a long shot. Of all of the possibilities though, the Golden Globes may be their best shot. The HFPA has a different sensibility (and priorities) than most stateside press or industry folk.
Totally agree jetlagged. Loved him in particular as Henry V as opposed to Prince Hal. Handsomehandsomehandsome
Yep. Henry V is my forever crush. Hal had some great moments in both Pt. I and Pt. II, but there was something not quite there for me. I was surprised to learn they filmed Henry V first since it felt like the more consistent performance.
Hiddles in TNM was Okay.
If they had an award for The Eyes have it, then he would win. Or Outstanding Ass or The Art of wallbanging.
Other than that, Hugh was the best part of the show.
Ahem. Olivia Colman asking Laurie if he felt a bit “discombobulated” was the best part. And Tom Hollander’s Corky. And Tobias Menzie’s face when he couldn’t answer the phone. As Sixer proclaimed, a STONKING good time all around.
Indeed.
We all need a stonking good time right about now. 🙂
Loved Dickie’s little breakdown in the truck at the end. Well played Pine.
Award for Eyes. Hah! I would go for that, sure. TNM was def all about eye shots. I can’t complain. Tom’s eyes are beautiful. I could look into them for days.
It´s kind of funny the further we get from “Hiddleswift” the nicer people seems to be towards Tom. I think that will last until he start dating again…
The people who showed up because it was the bad relationship of the moment have moved onto other things
Thank God.
Pass the mojitos!!🍸🍹
Very late to the party, but yeah, mojitos all around 🙂
Getting back a sense of proportion?
All work and no play.
I think Ryan Reynolds will get a nom for Deadpool in the comedy category. I think Mandy Moore and or Milo will get a nom for This is Us. I also think Hailee Steinfeld will make it in Best Comedy Actress for The edge of seventeen. La la Land will probably get nominations for everything. Ryan Gosling could be a potential double nominee for La La Land and The Nice Guys. And I also think Tom Hiddleston will get nominated.
Also, since Emma will be going in for comedy/musical then I think Ruth will have an easy time getting nominated.
I just wish The Crown gets snubbed because I had to watch it, forced by UK’s parentage, and I found it terribly boring and soapy. Super overrated and just a glossy boring soap opera . Ugh…
Tom Hiddleston in TNM? Meh. Agree with the ladies above that the rest of the cast stole the show. But ISTL? His performance was staggering and I would LOVE to see a nom for him there. A lousy movie made watchable by his stellar turn. I cry every time I warch it because he’s so good. Amazing. All the superlatives.
I’m still bitter about ISTL. A scene or performance would break my heart but then all that momentum would just get tossed away to hurry on to the next random moment, and it happened many times in the 2-hour span of the film. Utterly infuriating.
His performance in ISTL was truly remarkable; such a shame the director let him down. He showed that he definitely has range and can do a believable American regional accent.
Still have not seen either ISTL or HR.
Not sure if I could watch ISTL. Just does not draw me. Heard so many things about HR that I want to see it.
May watch ISTL just to see if TH performance is as good as y’all say.
A question. Is ISTL in the running for anything?
Realistically, no – ISTL doesn’t have any awards buzz at all, probably the opposite in fact. I think even the studio, who had made noises about campaigning for Tom, saw the writing on the wall and gave up pretty early on. The only thing I can see – and it is a super, super longshot – is a Golden Globe nom for Tom in their Best Actor in Comedy or Musical category. It’s going to depend on who else in that category caught the eye of the HFPA. Then again, if they choose to recognize The Night Manager, they might forego nominating Tom for ISTL since he’d get an invite to the party anyway.
If the film had been even just a little better, I could make a case for Oscar noms in cinematography and maybe costume design, but I’d be shocked if it actually happened.
@jetlagged, I agree. The cinematography was outstanding.
@lp, @jetlagged
Totally agree. It would be nice to see ISTL get some well deserved credit, but most likely it will remain a hidden jewel-in-the-rough. Tom’s performance and commitment to stretch into a demanding role was commendable. Olsen did a good job and like @lp says, the cinematography and costume/sets were outstanding.
I think critics were too harsh and tore down ISTL just cause it was an easy kill. There was already a lot of Hank Williams fans that were against it from the start cause an unknown Brit got the role. Then there was the grandson that made a stink too. Everybody else was anticipating a Big historical movie of an American icon with big concert recording tracks. But it was a small budget film of love for Mark Abrams, and even though the music and sound tracks that Tom and Randy did were excellent, there just wasn’t heavy-hitter insiders invested that were going to go out on a lime for it. Especially with it’s editing/plot/script flaws.
Thank you @jetlagged.
