What were the biggest snubs of the 2017 Golden Globe nominations?

Now that we’ve had some time to process the Golden Globe nominations – go here for the film nominations and here for the TV nominations – it’s time to analyze the snubs. Before we get started, let me just say that I’m pretty happy with the nominations from a diversity standpoint: Moonlight was recognized, and Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris was recognized individually. I’m very pleased with Loving’s nominations too, although I think it will be an uphill battle for Ruth Negga to win much of anything, what with Emma Stone and Natalie Portman dominating. So here’s a listicle of notable snubs:

No Tom Hanks for Sully. While Sully made it to a lot of year-end Best Films lists, Hanks’ omission doesn’t bug me that much. I mean, he’s got plenty of awards.

No Michael Shannon for Nocturnal Animals (Aaron Taylor Johnson got a nom though).
No Martin Scorsese for Silence (good, that film looks problematic as hell).
No Emily Blunt for The Girl on the Train.
No Matthew McConaughey (good).

No Michael Keaton for The Founder, which was getting some late-season buzz, but apparently not enough.

No Denzel Washington… for Best Director. He got nominated as an actor though.

No Kate Beckinsale for Love & Friendship.

Game of Thrones. While the show was nominated, Lena Headey was the only actor from the show with a nomination. NO KIT HARINGTON! Which is a shame, because this past season was his best work.

Stranger Things. The show got nominated, Winona Ryder got nominated (looking forward to seeing her at an awards show!), but no Millie Bobby Brown, the young child actor.

No Cuba Gooding Jr. for The People v. O.J. Simpson. His cast members got a lot of love, which everyone knew would happen, but I guess Courtney B. Vance got the nomination meant for Cuba.

Westworld. While the show got plenty of nominations, there was nothing for Jeffrey Wright or Anthony Hopkins.

No Tatiana Maslany for Orphan Black.
No Jeffrey Dean Morgan (for Walking Dead).
No Orange is the New Black.
No Milo Ventimiglia on This Is Us.
No Viola Davis for How to Get Away with Murder.
No Taraji P. Henson for Empire (or Hidden Figures). No Empire at all.
No House of Cards, not even nominations for Kevin Spacey & Robin Wright.
No Luke Cage.
No Silicon Valley.
No Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt – no nominations for the show or for Ellie Kemper or any other cast member.

While the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is good at recognizing new talent, especially in television, it does feel like they did a hell of a lot of “editing” and “culling” on their lists this year. Then again… it’s just the Golden Globes, people! It’s just a fun night where celebrities get wasted together. The only snub that really pains me here is Michael Shannon… I wanted to see him on the red carpet, talking sh-t about Donald Trump. I mean, COME ON! We all needed that.

I wouldn’t have nominated Cuba Gooding, Jr. either if I was in the position to. I thought the miniseries was overall well-acted, with him as a glaring exception. He was laughable!

  2. Grace says:

I’m happy Sterling K. Brown got nominated for People vs. OJ Simpson but he, Milo, and Justin deserved to get nominated for This Is Us (thrilled for Chrissy Metz and Mandy Moore, though, and the show because that means the whole cast will be going – after Susan Kelechi Watson wore my favorite dress of the night at the Critics Choice Awards, I’m really excited to see what she’ll wear).

  3. Radley says:

The Walking Dead gets snubbed year after year. This past season may not have been their best. But a few seasons ago they were very much in the zone and they got nothing then too. It’s very hard to build a series around a zombie apocalypse that you can actually take seriously and root for the humans and not the zombies, which is what I’ve ended up doing with some past zombie flicks/shows. I think these awards shows are biased against them because ZOMBIES.

You can never take these award shows too seriously. As long as humans are involved in the process, there will be ??? nominations and ??? omissions.

  4. A says:

I think this is probably just a case of them having too much good to choose from. But I am glad that they are making the effort to maybe set aside some shows that have already gotten a great deal of buzz and acclaim to focus on newer work. And at the end of the day, you can only choose so many options.

  5. Aiobhan Targaryen says:

As I said in the last post, GOT has peaked and should not be getting anymore nominations other than best Drama. The production side and costumes deserves alone are the reason why they deserve best drama noms. Anyone from the main cast getting a nom is a bad joke. Any writing noms would be a travesty.

Tituss Burgess and Amy Sedaris would have been fine nominees from KS.

Silicon Valley has the same routine every season. It gets annoying that none of the men have grown up and are still slightly sexist and racist. Kumail deserves better than that show.

Cuba was easily the worst part of that show and deserves zilch. Nada. Nothing. lol

    • Michelle says:

I thought last season was Lena Hedley’s best. She captured Cersei’s desperate madness perfectly. I thought it was a well-deserved nom.

      • tracking says:

I agree, Lena is deserving. When I think about that amazing finale, I mainly think of her face (and the music).

    • Lyka says:

Kumail DOES deserve better than that show. His accent and ethnicity is the butt of way too many jokes on a show that rarely features people of color to begin with.

    • mom2two says:

RE: GOT-Lena deserved a nod. Kit was not snubbed. If anything Milo and Sterling should have been nominated for This Is Us over Kit. Besides, that category belongs to Lithgow.

  6. Sansa says:

All I really want to see is Evan Racheal Wood who won people’s choice this weekend win best actress in a Television drama win.

  7. Kiki says:

This is a little better than the Grammy’s l. The Grammy’s suck by the way. So I am looking forward to the Golden Globes.

  8. mazzie says:

Sometimes I think the HFPA picks people they think would be fun to party with.

  9. Rose says:

Ugh Sterling aka Randell from This is us should have gotten a nomination. He carries that show.

  10. MellyMel says:

“Courtney B. Vance got the nomination meant for Cuba.” Nope…Cuba Gooding Jr. didn’t deserve to get a nom for The People v. O.J. Simpson. He was the weakest link in the cast which is ironic. I am surprised by Milo Ventimiglia and Luke Cage getting snubbed though. Also the last season of House of Cards wasn’t my favorite, but Robin Wright was really good imo.

    • Lightpurple says:

And Vance already won the Emmy. He deserves the nod, not Cuba.

      • Kori says:

100%. The Emmys got it right with awarding the 3 (Vance, Paulsen and Brown). And the previous 2 were locks from the start with Brown a happy surprise. No way Cuba challenges either man but Vance especially.

  11. serena says:

Damn, I wished Milo Ventimiglia got nominated as he’s doing a splendid job on This is Us.

I feel sorry for Kit Harrington and Mike Colter too.. :/

  12. jbap says:

What on earth is problematic about Scorsese’s Silence? By all accounts it’s a faithful (maybe too much so?) adoption of the original novel by Shusaku Endo – a brilliant Japanese writer.

  13. MadHatter says:

Just waiting for Ruth Negga to SLAY the red carpet. Everyone else’s fashion choices seem to be so dull, esp Emma Stone, she’s got the dullest fashion in HW. Her critics award dress while nice was boring.

  14. Allie B. says:

Winona over acted in Strangers Things to the point of embarrassment. I guess it’s okay for Casey Affleck to be a sexual predator.

  15. OTHER RENEE says:

I admit my tv watching is strictly limited to what I find on Netflix. That being said Kinmy Schmidt is my favorite show and everyone in it is fantastic. I think the problem is that while the characters have grown in the second season and stopped playing the one dimensional (albeit funny) characters they played in the first season, this may have gone unnoticed by GG voters.

  16. JaneDoesWork says:

The biggest snubs for me here are Jeffrey Wright in Westworld and Mahershala Ali in Luke Cake. I knew it was a slim to nothing chance that they would honor a comic book show, but his performance was incredible.

    • tegteg says:

Jeffrey Wright, Anthony Hopkins, and Thandie Newton were phenomenal in WW. I’m glad Thandie was recognized for her standout performance, but severely disappointed that Wright and Hopkins were overlooked. I was also impressed with Jimmi Simpson – I’m used to seeing him as a McPoyle on Always Sunny! He’s got some acting chops.

Also, Rodrigo Santoro is FOINNNNNE. But that is neither here nor there. *cough* Carry on.

  17. Maum says:

I find Jeffrey Dean Morgan awful as Negan. He was good at the end of last season but his crude teenage boy humour and ‘threatening’ demeanour is so tedious that I genuinely cringe when he’s on screen. I even FF some of his scenes… out of boredom.
I don’t find him nuanced at all and I can’t believe we lost Glenn to that.

I though the Governor was a lot more unhinged and scary than Negan.

  18. Really says:

    No The Blacklist. No Shameless.
I just finished watching all the Blacklist seasons and that is a shame, what a great show. Same with House of Cards and OTNB. No reason to be watching his year, none of my shows were recognized.

  19. Sean says:

No Aya Cash, or Kether Donahue for You’re The Worse
