Taraji P. Henson at the Hidden Figures Washington DC premiere: fierce?

Of the films coming out during this holiday season, my husband and I are most excited about Hidden Figures. I’m woefully uneducated on the complexities of the story upon which it is based, I love the cast and, to be completely superficial, the costuming has me all a-titter. Hidden Figures is about the group of African American female mathematicians, engineers and managers at NASA who were instrumental in launching a man into space (sentimentally, that man was John Glenn who just passed). The movie’s premiere in Washington DC on Wednesday took place at the National Museum Of African American History & Culture. Taraji P. Henson, who portrays mathematician Katherine Johnson, looked amazing on the red carpet. She wore this incredible Hellessy dress with taupe suede heels. I would have gone with a brighter hued shoe but the dress is cut so well, I can forgive the choice for not pulling focus. Her sleek hair complements the dress beautifully and her makeup is perfect.

Katherine Johnson, whom Taraji plays, was awarded the Medal of Freedom by President Barak Obama in 2015. Last night, Ms. Johnson, along with Taraji and her costars Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae, Kevin Costner and director Theodore Melfi, all attended a special screening held by Michelle Obama at the White House. Could you imagine what it must have felt like for any of those people to be at the White House watching this? I wish 2016 had more stories like this to tell.

Taraji was on The View recently talking about her memoir, Around the Way Girl, that Kaiser covered when it came out. When asked why she choose to write the book, Taraji made an interesting point about social media. She said that so many people started to learn pieces of her background, like moving to California with only her son and $700 or getting pregnant and graduating from college, but they only had part of the story. So she saw the book as a way to tell all of it in hopes that someone else might benefit. As she put it, “as an artist I was like ‘I have the mic.’ And God said, how are you going to use that mic?” I love that last line. Wouldn’t we be better off if we asked ourselves, ‘how are you going to use that mic?’

Also at the DC premiere was Octavia Spencer in the pretty teal dress. It’s not flashy but it’s a lovely silhouette and the simplicity lends to an overall elegance.

Janelle Monae always makes interesting fashion choices – some that work and some that don’t. She went off-road with a giant houndstooth coat, turtleneck, black tights and bright red hat. I love this. Plus, Janelle wears her look with confidence. Yeah, I’d wear this if I could.

Kevin Costner was also there, looking very Kevin Costnery *sigh* I just can’t quit him (except for that milk smudge under his lip)

And Pharell Williams who wrote the music with Hans Zimmer. I can quit him no problem.

The ladies are slaying! I think this is the best Octavia has ever looked! I loved all outfits and would wear them in a heart beat!

    • NastyWoman` says:

I think everyone but Janelle look wonderful. I hate it when people wear coats as outfits. And Pharell looks like a 6 year old who dressed himself for the first time.

      • Lalu says:

I get what you’re saying about the coat. But I think she could wear a trash bag and be gorgeous.
I forgot how much I love houndstooth.

  2. V4Real says:

I can’t wait to see this movie. It’s so sad that a lot of youth, especially Black youth didn’t know that this actually happened.

I will also add that my bf met President Obama on Wednesday at the White House. I was so jealous.

And the great Katherine Johnson is 98 years old.

  4. Lynnie says:

YASSS JANELLE. Love her! Tara’s bob is excellent, and I can’t wait to see the movie! Hope it does well!

  5. SusanneToo says:

I love Taraji, Octavia, Janelle. I can hardly wait to see this movie-so glad it got made. I want more like it.

  6. I Choose Me says:

I’m thinking I would have liked Tariji’s dress without sleeves. And Octavia’s dress could have done with a bit more fitting at the bustline but both ladies look great.

I’m looking forward to the movie as well – the story and the clothing style of that era.

  7. Jess says:

I am so excited to see this movie. The book is awesome but it’s dense so I’m not finished yet. My boyfriend and I like to see a feel good movie on xmas day and this year it will be Hidden Figures.

  8. Lalu says:

I can’t remember the last time I was excited about a movie coming out. We took our son to see Fantastic Beasts and the trailer for this movie came on. I was crying. It looks really good. I had no idea that these women played such a huge part in the shuttle mission. I am going to see it.
On a superficial note… The ladies look gorgeous. And I still love Costner from back in the day.

  9. Tila says:

I cannot wait to see this!!

  10. It'sJustBlanche says:

Kevin Costner is aging well. Sorry I know he’s sort of a douche. He needs to lose that facial hair though.

  11. Lucy2 says:

I can’t wait to go see this, I hope it does really well.
    All the ladies look amazing.

  12. GingerCrunch says:

First two dresses are perfect for the season and the occasion! I want BOTH!!!

  13. Grant says:

I hate Taraji’s makeup/shoes but I love the dress and her hair.

  14. KiddVicious says:

I’ll watch anything with Octavia in it.

I love Taraji’s dress. It’s the prefect “go to” dress. It can be dressed up or dressed down. It’s simple enough that it can be accessorized, yet interesting enough that accessories aren’t needed. And most importantly, it looks comfortable.

  15. NeoCleo says:

I can’t get over the perfection of Monae’s skin. No lines, no pores, absolutely gorgeous.

  16. Yup, Me says:

They all look gorgeous. I’m looking forward to seeing this and having my 6 year old son see it as well!

Dammit if this entire article/pics/ movie premise/ Obama screening story don’t have me BANGING on this desk SO SO HARD!!

    #BlackExcellence

also Janelle Monae commitment to black and white and also to reveal her beauty on her own terms has been something else… I still recall when she was doing suits only and before the maybelline contract that Cosmo interviewed her and she was SO forthright she was like ” oh I KNOW i have a fabulous figure I just don’t wanna be about it right now ( plus it was an homage to her parents uniforms day today) , and when I do it’d be because I wanna show that” and then they asked her about her hair and to my surprise she was like I do It Myself, I take pride on being the one that knows what to do with it and it being unique… Im sure it’s not just her doing her things now but I always appreciated that about her… and her commitment to Black Lives Matter and how she so wanted to bring her friends up with her and the released the Eephus with her peeps all working together ( which is a delicious collection of music!, and it also made Jidenna Pop!)

  18. Bread and Circuses says:

Taraji’s dress is amazing! It looks comfy too, although that could be an illusion due to how well it’s tailored; the fabric looks soft but may not be. I think I prefer her in a redder lipstick though.

And yes, Octavia looks super pretty in that dress! It is a simple, perfect choice.

Janelle is inhumanly beautiful, but I’m usually not wild about her personal style. This outfit is one of the better ones, imo. 🙂

I’m so so so excited about this movie and learning more about the roles these ladies played in NASA’s historical development.

Everyone looks amazing…even Pharrell in his own special way lol.

  21. Abbess Tansy says:

I echo what’s been said about this movie, cannot wait to see it, and the women all look fabulous.

  22. DesertReal says:

Everyone is rocking it out on their own individual ways- but Taraji is giving me some serious hai/styling envy right now.

  23. TotallyBiased says:

A THOUSAND HONKS for Hidden Figures and ALL the women: Katherine Johnson and her fellow mathematicians, Taraji, Octavia, Janelle…
I have been excited about this movie for months, and it is thrilling to see people get excited by the trailer (we also saw it before Fantastic Beasts) and White House premiere.
