Do you know how Thandie Newton wore a really ill-fitting polka dot Monse dress to the BAFTAs? (If you missed it, go here to see.) Monse came through for her at the Globes. Look at this white off the shoulder sheath dress with diagonal burnt orange sequins creeping up the hem like she is on FIRE. This is such a simple concept executed well and I love it. I’m sad Thandie didn’t win for supporting role in a limited series, for her sublime work in Westworld, that went to Olivia Colman for The Night Manager. (I’m surprised TNM won in so many categories, but I only watched the first episode, it just wasn’t my type of show.) Slay all day, Thandie. That backwards necklace!
Kristen Wiig wore a white lace Reem Acra gown. This is yet another one of those see-through gowns with the bathing suit area strategically covered, yet the lace is not what we typically see on these dresses, it’s larger. I like this and adore her styling. She had a cute bit with Steve Carrell which Kaiser covered earlier in the Globes recap. Steve and Kristen were funny, they have perfect timing together, but I didn’t think the part about how they had the same haircut was necessary. There were a lot of dumb jokes last night and I found some of the writing in poor taste.
Kathryn Hahn was one of three women I saw in pantsuits, the others being Evan Rachel Wood and Octavia Spencer. I like this trend and hope it continues. Her suit is Brandon Maxwell and I don’t even dislike the jacket open to reveal her bra. You can only see a bit of it anyway.
Here’s Rachel Bloom who lost in the best actress in a comedy category to Tracee Ellis Ross. (She won the Globe in this category two years ago for Crazy Ex Girlfriend and she also has a couple of Emmys for her wodk on Robot Chicken.) She was in Christian Siriano, who also dressed Issa Rae and Angela Bassett last night. Siriano’s designs are hit or miss but you can tell he tries to make his clients feel beautiful on the red carpet. Bloom’s gown wasn’t amazing, it made her look very top heavy and the sequins seemed like an afterthought. She looked like she was having a good time though.

I loved Thandie’s look. She’s so gorgeous! I wish she’d won too, but Olivia Colman is so great I can’t really begrudge her.
Her dress actually looks like it was dipped in blood, maybe little wink towards WW? I am extremely sad for her. POC, female, not in the 20yo category and such amazing role performace is such rare sigthing in Holywood. I just wish she was recognized.
I liked Thandie’s look untill I scrolled down and saw that “fire”. I think the idea is great but it’s badly done (wrong material, wrong colours, too pixelly). But man she’s pretty.
Agreed. I loved the dress until I saw the whole thing. She’s a stunningly beautiful woman, though!
Same! I was loving the dress and then as I scrolled down it was Yikes! Looks cheap and Vegas.
Ahahaha, heres my fashion kryptonite. I LOVE sparkle. Think she looks fab and love the fire.
Granted it ruins the classic look of the dress, but sequins!
I love the fire, as well.
I’m a magpie who can’t resist glitz (done right) and think a dress in the orange sequins–or even just the Orange–would’ve been great. I usually think WOC look fab in white but I don’t think Thandie carries it as well as a Viola or Lupita. Still does a bit washing out. The classic cut keeps it from looking too bridal though.
Oh god, Thandie would look so good in a firey metallic orange.
I tend to like flashy, shiny, and Thandie is so pretty she can carry pretty much anything, so this may be influencing my opinion. Also, can someone explain to me why her career has not done too much?
I actually like the fire. It gives the dress some panache. It needed something to break up the white, IMO.
Not me, I love the dress, fire sequins and all.
I kinda like the combination of white and copper, but I wish it was more delicately done? It is just a big bulk of sequins. Other than that, Thandie looks and is perfect!
i like the dress, but I do think the fit is off slightly. Needed to be more tailored.
I don’t mind the fire, but hate the shoes
I like Kathryn’s suit, more suited actresses please! It is such an underrated look.
PS: Thandie and Catriona…Best dressed hands down!
I absolutely love her dress. Thandie Newton is gorgeous and the dress does her justice. This is one of my favorite dresses of the night.
I Love Thandie but all the dresses in this post are Middling at best, The Suit WIns almost by Default
Rachel Bloom always looks so excited to be on a red carpet and i love it. So many actors and actresses seem over it and shes just running around like “look at me! Im in a pretty dress on a red carpet living my dreammmmm”
Agreed. Also, Rachel Bloom won the Golden Globe last year and Gina Rodriguez the year before. Got those two mixed up.
I would have liked different shoes on her but Thande’s outfit is a win. Really dig Kathyrn Hahn’s suit as well.
The bottom of the dress doesn’t flow with the look and just looks like they didn’t have time to complete whatever they were going for. That killed it for me.
I think the reason Thandie looks great is because she is a gorgeous woman. The dress itself isn’t that exciting. LOVE Kathryn Hahn. Even with bangs.
I first noticed Marshashala Ali AND Kathryn Hahn on Crossing Jordan. Would’ve loved a photo of the two together. 🙂
Thandie was the BEST of last night!
Thandie’s work is really great in Westworld. It’s amazing how intricate their facial expressions are in the show!
Thandie was one of my favorite dresses. The shoes kill it though.
ok, thandie’s dress is absolutely perfect.
i liked dern’s dress.
i loved that blue and orange wierd one with the flower at the high waist…oh i can’t believe how wonderful that one was…but i think thandie wins.
this dress is just exquisite. and she makes it look even better.
nice.
