This weekend was a big weekend for birthdays. Yesterday Corey wrote about Sofia Vegara throwing a shindig for Joe Manganiello and Katy Perry surprising Orlando Bloom for their 40th birthdays. Miley Cyrus and Jessica Alba also both threw bashes for their loved ones.
Jessica Alba hosted a ‘Pajama Jammy Jam’ themed party for her husband Cash Warren who turned 38 on the 10th. Everyone who attended came in loungewear, including Kourtney Kardashian who sported a see-through lingerie top and silk pajamas. Jessica herself wore a onesie covered in dollar signs that many assume is a wink to her husband’s name. That’s cute, right? I’ll get to why I am asking in a little bit. Chrissy Teigen and John Legend attended in coordinating KFC onesies that look incredibly comfortable:
Okay, so personal opinions about a group of adults dressing in pajamas for a party aside, this is all fun and everyone seemed to be having a nice time with a cheeky theme.
In contrast, Miley hosted a birthday blow out for a few people close to her – her sister Noah, who turned 17 on the 8th, good friend and The Flaming Lips Frontman, Wayne Coyne, who turned 56 on the 13th and fiancé Liam Hemsworth who also had a birthday on the 13th – he turned 27. So two folks had a birthday on Friday the 13th and the night before, The Flaming Lips had their record release party for their new album, Oczy Mlody. Both of those would have been good themes, I think. Instead, the theme was ‘N.W.L.’, standing for ‘Noah Wayne Liam’. This was their cute take on a theme loosely tied to hip-hop group N.W.A. The ‘N.W.L.’ theme had party goers draped in gold chains, bandanas and fake tattoos. As you can imagine, it was a questionable decision at best:
Miley gave a shout out to Snoop Dogg/Lion for supplying Merry Jane-filled gift bags for the party but I find no evidence that he was actually there:
Although as of this writing, major outlets have not said boo on Miley and crew’s choice, many of the commenters on all of the Instagram shots posted are calling them out for cultural appropriation. As we know, this is not the first time Miley has been accused of this. Liam’s big brother Chris is, I believe, still filming Horse Soldiers and was not at the party. However, Chris’ wife, Elsa Pataky, was there:
Last year, Elsa and Chris were taken to task for cultural appropriation with their ill-conceived ‘Cowboys and Indians’ themed New Year’s Eve party, a party both Miley and Liam attended. Months later, Chris wrote what I thought was a good apology saying he had taken the time to educate himself on the subject and wanted to apologize for a really insensitive decision. Elsa offered no apology.
N.W.A. is not a theme, they are a hip hop group that protested police brutality and spoke to the anger of the youth in their community. We were talking about this and Kaiser made a comparison to sorority “Pimps and Hos” parties in college. It’s neither cute nor cheeky.

Miley does do some good activist work, but she is tone deaf on racial issues. If she’s going to have an NWA themed party full of white people, the least she could do is speak out about police violence in addition to the other causes she supports.
It’s sketchy at best.
Miley babe how would you like me to throw a party with a bunch of black people with blond hair fake tan and fake breast. Tons of makeup and black guys walking around in white faced with strap on of little penis’s and with salad for the main course. Stereo typing as fu_k. Not cool at all. NWA is cannot be duplicsted not should anyone black or why try. What NWA went through what the majority of black men go through in this country those white people at Mileys party have no clue and to throw a party dressed as such tells it all. Another thing Miley if Snoop did bring to the party a little something something you don’t go advertise the shit. Another rule in the hood that she is clearly not aware of.
Sigh. Just when I start to like Miley….
And of course Elsa didn’t issue a statement. She can’t let silly little concerns about cultural appropriation interfere with her Sahara levels of thirst and C list relevance.
Nevermind.
A bunch of white people throwing a party treating black people like costumes on MLK weekend? What’s racially offensive about that?!
+1. Just…..wtf
I know cringy isn’t a popular word, but this is cringy. I just cringed while looking at this pictures.
All I can say is, you’d need a big oven to cook that pizza.
As for #the best party ever, they seem like a right bunch of desperados trying to look like they’re having a great time, in a half empty room.
Miley posed with a group of friends deliberately slanting their eyes, while the one Asian guy in front looked on uncomfortably, offering no apology. She used black women and “little” women as props in her show. She posed for a man who’s known for sexual assaults, and taunted two mentally ill women about their mental health. And you’re surprised by her lack of awareness and by her attitude?
Every time I start to like Miley, I remember her treatment of Sinead. Sinead should be respected. She was a true trailblazer and has a huge heart and immense talet- her words to Miley were respectful and sincere, even if you don’t agree with the message. The way Miley mocked her and called her irrelevant was gross. Irrelevant – Sinead was a crusader for victims of sexual violence by the Catholic Church and was VILIFIED for saying things that most people accept as truth today.
So she had a weed bar at a 17 year-olds birthday…….ok
This wouldn’t be as bad if they had dressed that way because they liked the style, but associating “bling”, drugs, and tattoos with NWA is beyond offensive.
Plus, why in the world is a 56 year old creep celebrating his birthday with an underage girl?
My favorite part about all of this is that Liam apparently has no idea what the theme of the party is, and just went in a colorful vest. Nice one, bro.
