Octavia Spencer buys out ‘Hidden Figures’ screening for single parents

I saw Hidden Figures yesterday over the long holiday weekend. I had to see it on Sunday because it was sold out Saturday when I tried. The screening at my local theater was crowded on the film’s second weekend, which is indicative of how well it did at the box office overall. Hidden Figures was number one on its second weekend, beating out La La Land and Sing. After seeing it, it’s easy to know why. The film is delightful, the writing is fresh and funny and there were so many moments when the audience was laughing, tsking at the screen and just experiencing these very capable, impressive women. Everyone clapped at the end and I will admit to crying a few times but they were mostly happy tears. Plus it’s a rare family-friendly film and that brings out larger audiences. Going to the movies can be expensive though, and star Octavia Spencer knows this. On Friday she bought out an LA-area screening of Hidden Figures and donated all the tickets to single parent families. Octavia and her six siblings were raised by a single mom, whom she credits with giving her the drive to succeed. She wrote on Instagram that her mother, who passed away when she was just 18, could not have afforded to send her to the movies.

Octavia’s costar Taraji P Henson regrammed this with the message:

This is how phenomenal this woman is @therealoctaviaspencer bought out the movie theatre for TONIGHT’S 8pm showing of #hiddenfigures at Rave cinemas Baldwin Hills in Los Angeles California for poverty stricken families who want to see this movie with their children on #MLK day. If you are in #LA & don’t have the money to see the movie with your children go watch for free tonight! 1st come first serve so get there early. #blackfamilies #spreadtheword #realhistory #history #blackgirlsrock #octaviaspencer #tarajiphenson #janellemonae #baldwinhills

Mild spoilers for Hidden Figures follow
That picture of Octavia in character with illustrations of the real women from Hidden Figures is beautiful. One of the my favorite parts of the film were the end credits, when we got to see photos and video clips of the original women at NASA. Some of their triumphs as depicted seemed over the top, but it also occurred to me how phenomenal they musthave been in order to succeed in white male-dominated fields as African-American women in the 1960s. I recently found an interview with Katherine Johnson (played by Taraji P Henson in the film) and she confirmed some of the details shown in the movie, like John Glenn personally asking for her to confirm the data from the computer calculations. Johnson is still with us at 98(!) years old and has seen Hidden Figures three times. The other two women shown in the film, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, have since passed.

Other people are raising money so that everyone can see this phenomenal film. Several teachers have started fund drives and a 13 year-old girl from Florida, Taylor Richardson, has raised over $9,000 to send girls to see the film. Richardson, who aspires to be an astronaut, writes on her GoFundMe pageAs a girl of color, it’s important that girls not only look at the stars but take the steps to reach for the stars… STEM is hard work but we must explain to our girls that there will be times when you may fail but keep trying. We can’t allow our girls to feel that STEM is only for boys. We have to do more.” Also check out the website Future Katherine Johnsons, which is built by Black Girls Code and promotes STEM careers for women of color.

  2. Lucy says:

I can’t wait to see this!!

  3. Karen says:

I debated seeing hidden figures or la la land this weekend. But since I love musicals I chose la la land – and hated it. I walked out thinking wow I made the wrong choice. This weekend – Hidden Figures all the way. I’m excited!

    • Ninks says:

I saw La La Land over the weekend too and I was decidedly underwhelmed. I just didn’t get it. Hidden figures isn’t out here until February, and I can’t wait to see it.

    • Milena says:

I did the exact same thing! Saw La La Land one weekend and was mad about wasting money on a ticket, then saw Hidden Figures and loved it.

  4. Nicole says:

Seen it twice and I’m so disappointed it’s not getting more awards show love. It’s such a delightful film and proof that black movies CAN bring the audiences

    Aww Spencer.
I’m just gonna sit over here clapping for her, what a frigging queen among women.

  6. JulP says:

I’ve been dying to see this movie! So glad it’s doing so well critically and commercially. Its success definitely disproves the idea that a film can only be profitable if it features white men. Hopefully we will see more films like this in the future.

  7. Sixer says:

This film looks right up my alley. Bet it doesn’t get a wide release in deepest darkest Devon.

    *goes off for listings*

  8. Shambles says:

I saw it last night. Absolutely excellent. Inspiring and uplifting, yet raw and matter of fact about the reality of life as a black woman in the 60s. I loved every moment. But I cried the hardest when they played a clip of JFK giving a speech, knowing what we’re headed into on Friday. I think I’ll probably cry a lot this week.

My husband and I took our two daughters, 14 and 6 last weekend. We loved it!!! The audience clapped several times and shouted some “woohoo’s!” I cried….of course.

Everyone needs to see this movie!

My daughters are bi-racial. This was probably the first non-Disney movie we’ve taken the 6 year old to. I had to lean over and explain that back then, black people couldn’t use the same bathroom and couldn’t go to the same schools. She asked if I would have been mean to her dad if we lived back then. Talk about a lump in my throat! I assured her that there were white people back then that were nice to black people and fought for civil rights too.

    I LOVE Octavia Spencer!

And the movie is so good. We saw it last weekend and there were at least two Girl Scout troops in the theater.

  10. Ayra. says:

YES YES! The love I have for Octavia – the cast itself of that movie..just amazing.
It’s just so inspiring that I can’t put it into words especially as someone that aspires to go into the astronomy/astrophysics field and knowing that, as being both black and a woman, it’s going to be challenging. So I just get so hyped up when I read stories about black women that have succeeded.

  11. QQ says:

*Standing Ovation for Octavia and for Hidden Figures going Gangbusters!*

  12. SusanneToo says:

Heard it won the weekend box office with LLL behind it. So happy it’s doing well.

  13. OhDear says:

Aww, that’s great that she did that!

  14. Ramona says:

It topped the box office this weekend! Correct me if I am wrong but this is the first time a film with black female leads has topped this century. Even Dream Girls billed Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy above the actual Dream Girls.

    • Kate says:

YES!! THIS!! Three black female leads kicked some Big white tail this weekend CoughBenAffleck ScorseseCough, let’s talk about that feat!!

  15. teacakes says:

All the love to Octavia for doing this, and long may Hidden Figures rule <3

  16. Onemoretime says:

I took my two daughters to this movie and yes we cried, laughed and cheered. We will definitely be going to see it a second time. And I am absolutely in love with Ms Spencer!!

  17. aenflex says:

I just love her work. I like to think that part of the real her comes through in her characters. She’s my celebrity crush.

  18. Anilehcim says:

This is extremely touching! Absolutely love Octavia. Looking forward to seeing this movie.

  19. OriginallyBlue says:

I saw it this weekend with my daughter the theatre was almost full. We both loved it, though she keeps calling it “women in black”
As a little black girl who wants to do and be everything I’m so glad that she was able to see this movie.

  20. Angel says:

    Honk for Octavia

  21. lucy2 says:

Go see this film! Support stories about women, about people of color, and about real human stories. Plus it’s a darn good movie too.
I LOVE her so much for doing this, I saw it on facebook the other day and could have cried. What a beautiful gesture, and a great way to help more people see it.
