Warning: this post contains spoilers about this week’s episode of This is Us
On Tuesday’s episode of NBC’s hit drama, entitled “Three Sentences,” we get a teeny breadcrumb of a hint as to when Jack passed away. The episode flashes briefly back to his funeral, where we get a glimpse of teenaged Kate, Kevin and Randall holding hands. That quick scene really got to some of the shows fans, who took to Twitter to shed some virtual tears about the imminent demise of TV’s new favorite Dad.
Show creator Dan Fogelman teased the reveal during last week’s Television Critic’s Association winter press tour. He and the cast took center stage at the event moments after learning that NBC renewed the show for a second and third season. At the panel discussion, Fogelman emphasized that the show had always planned to take its time to reveal the cause of Jack’s death, telling the audience that while this episode was “a big episode,” the show has “a while to go in the big picture.” He went on to say:
“Slowly but surely you’ll learn when, then much later how, and then you’ll see it, but that will take, hopefully, many many episodes,” Fogelman continued.
He explained that Jack and the family’s loss of Jack is the “hinge” of the series.
“The needle we have to continue to thread is sparsing out information so it never becomes too frustrating for people,” he told reporters. “There’s a before and after for this family. Even in the pilot, even before you knew there was anything off with Jack, there’s a hinge in this family, and it’s kind of a before with Jack and an after. That will be really interesting in future seasons and as we go forward, to show where that hinge was, how it happened and what happened to these people before and after it.”
Even though Fogelman is keeping tight-lipped about the subject, fans of the show have their own theories, and they aren’t completely off the wall.
As far as the rest of the episode, things were (mercifully for us) a bit lighter-hearted than in weeks past. We flashback to the Pearson kids’ 10 birthday celebrations. The Big Three had enjoyed a group party in previous years, but Kate and Kevin spearheaded a family meeting, requesting separate fetes with unique themes. Kevin wished for a Princess Bride-themed party, delivering a room full of pint-sized Inigo Montoyas – which was adorable.
Kate wanted her party to pay tribute to Madonna, complete with bedazzled gloves, courtesy of Papa Jack. Randall requested a magician, only because he felt he had to ask for something. Kevin’s party, out of the three, was the most successful, taking all of Kate’s friends, including her BFF, Sophie, away from planned Vogue lessons. Randall, whose three friends were the only ones in attendance, was perfectly content. I love Randall and young Kate gives me all of the feels. Whoever did the casting for this show deserves an Emmy.
Present-day Randall is dealing with his biological Dad William’s “chemo rush,” a newfound energy he’s discovered since being taken off treatment – and the two share a sweet bonding afternoon together, capped off by son teaching father how to drive.
Kate, now slightly skittish about gastric bypass surgery after Toby, her now-fiancé, suffered a heart attack, heads off for a month in an “immersive” weight loss facility where she is (really creepily) hit on by the camp’s stable keeper, Duke, who attempts to neg his way into her heart. I hope his methods don’t work. I am still #TeamToby. And that camp – wow. Lots of bird watching and drum therapy. I didn’t think it would be like The Biggest Loser, but, really?
As for the last of the Pearson kids, Kevin, who messed things up with both Sloane and awful Olivia, has a tête-à-tête with Toby about what he should do to get the love of his life back. Toby, the self-proclaimed “King of Grand Romantic Gestures” suggests Kevin just go and get his dream girl, but, surprise! The woman he wants to be with is his ex-wife, Sophie…Kate’s childhood best friend! What a tangled web you weave, This is Us!
The architect of this web, Fogelman, promises even more surprises to come, telling Entertainment Tonight, “We have a lot [of twists]. Our theme is, life will surprise you a little bit. What’s surprising for the audience is the order in which we choose to tell this story. We know where this series is going and how we’re going to keep people on their toes.”
I don’t know about you, but I’ve been on my toes all season, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
With 2 more seasons, they can flesh it out even more.
I get the creepiest vibe from Duke and they better not make Kate go for him, Kate and Toby foreva!!! I told my husband Duke reminds me of so many guys who use arrogance and intimidation to get women, it was making my stomach feel sick and anxious when he was getting in Kate’s face and she was backing up, it’s such an invasion of personal space, ugh.
As for Jack, I was crying my eyes out, of course, can’t go one episode without it! I just love this show so damn much, my whole family does and we love to snuggle in bed while watching it.
I said the same about and his jack ass douchey ways to get women.
Love this show! But William has to live!!!!
Right??!!! I have a little crush! Racking my brain trying to figure out a way they can write that. They’re pretty good with the twists, so who knows?
Sophie is also one of the girls who bullied Kate during their outing to the pool.
She was wasn’t she? I wonder if Kevin ever knew that. I wonder how much that affected Kate and how much it contributes to her problems. Or maybe we’ll see if she gets along with Karen in some flashbacks. Sophie wasn’t in the room of the party right? Even in the beginning she and two of her friends were outside the room where the Madonna party was being held, no? I think Jack tells them how great they look on his way into the room.
I think Kevin absolutely knew about Sophie being mean to Kate
I was skeptical about watching this show but it hooked me.
For me, it was like Friday Night Lights. I wasn’t going to let it and it got me!
Knowing about Jack’s impending death is what makes this show so interesting to me. Makes all the scenes with him very poignant. It’s gonna be heartbreaking, but lots of drama as a result!
I haven’t watched this show and never will but Mandy looks amazing in that cape dress!
Why Never? Just curious. I’ve been watching it because my group of girl friends is watching it. But I’m not really feeling it. And seems like I’m the only one finding Milo Ventimiglia a completely insincere actor.
I’m more of a Project Runway kind of gal 😉 and yes, agree with you on Milo.
@HeidiM
Now I am intrigued. May I ask why it seems insincere? I am curious. Love opinions!
I love this show. I think we are going to find out Jack cheated (I got the feeling in the episode in Miguel’s office. Question is if Rebecca ever finds out???) I mean damn that man seems too perfect! I want him and Mandy Moore to get together in real life. They are hot together!
It was cute seeing Kevin and Toby hanging out. And I agree that Duke seems creepy, coming on way too strong. But he did admit he’s a d!ck so I believe him. In the preview for next week he comes off even worse. I hope Toby punches him.
When William dies I’m going to have a meltdown. And to see Randall’s (my favorite character) reaction is going to devastate me! He’s such a good actor and I’m going to need all the Kleenex in the world to get through it.
Oh god no, no no no! Jack would never cheat, lol. I think he got his act together and stopped drinking and started being present at home every night, that’s why she still wears the necklace, right?
Maybe they get divorced because she cheated?
I don’t think Jack cheated because in an earlier episode, he gave Rebecca a necklace (and I think she said she was never going to take it off) that she still wears.
Kate is essentially at an eating disorder facility. They are working on the reason she is obese, since her obesity is a symptom of something greater.
It’s so weird seeing Toby thin in the cast pic above. I honestly thought he looked like his character.
My theory is that Jack died in a drunk driving accident that killed Miguel’s wife and child. We don’t ever hear of them (the wife and child) in the present day shots, only that Miguel is with Rebecca. I think they are dead, and it’s Jack’s fault.
Also, my mom thinks Kate is so heavy as an adult b/c she might have been molested, but I don’t think so, she was heavy early on and I think it just spiraled. My mom is freaking out that there’s a pedophile storyline coming. 🙁
This show!!! My husband and I love watching it together. The casting, both in flashbacks and current day, are amazing!!!! My heart broke for Randal even though he didn’t mind that only his 3 best friends came to the party. He’s so wise beyond his years. I think Randal in both young and old scenes is my favorite of the show! I’m curious about the fans ideas on Jacks death?! I might have to read up on it! I love this show.
Oh my god, I fear the moment of Jack’s death being shown. I love Milo and the way he portrays Jack, it would just hurt me to no end to see him gone from the show. Jack is one of the best thing of the show, honestly (though they’re all really great)! Anyway, so glad This is Us got renewed!
I don’t think he’ll ever be gone from the show. They do a lot of flashbacks in every episode…he’ll be around one way or the other.
This is a great show and I tear up every damn episode. The funeral scene had me ! I lost my own dad so it brings back memories. I think they get divorced and then he dies a bit later.
I think I’m alone, but I don’t like Jack. He doesn’t seem believable so he feels “off”. I LOVE Randal and his wife!
I love this show. I also have lots of thoughts and feelings about how they address Kate’s weight. While I am not obese, I am in a twelve step program for compulsive eating. So the storylines about her food and her mom’s reactions and her friends bullying and the surgery, and Toby! And the weight loss camp! All of it really tug on my heartstrings. I hope she actually can address the disease at the heart of disordered food behaviors.
Also milo is sexy even though possibly a douche irl? And the mixture of Jess with perfect dad guy is confusing to my heart and loins.
