For months, there was a lot of gossip about the state of Johnny Depp’s finances. He was reportedly looking to unload some of his vast real estate holdings, and he auctioned off a chunk of his extensive art collection. Some thought that Depp was merely trying to liquidate some assets in the midst of his divorce from Amber Heard. But as it turns out, Depp really was struggling financially. Depp filed a lawsuit against his now-former managers, claiming that the management firm, TMG, defrauded him of millions of dollars. TMG responded by basically saying that Depp spends too much money on cars, booze and real estate and that was his choice and they had nothing to do with his bad financial skills. Depp responded to that by claiming (unironically) that he was the victim of a gaslighting campaign. All of that went down in late January/early February. So what’s going on these days?
Johnny Depp is firing back at his former business managers, claiming they’re trying to discredit him with a “smear” campaign. Depp, 53, sued TMG in February for $25 million in a fraud lawsuit. TMG has since filed a cross-complaint, claiming the actor lived an “ultra-extravagant lifestyle that often knowingly cost Depp in excess of $2 million per month to maintain, which he simply could not afford.” The actor’s lawyer Adam Waldman told PEOPLE on Monday that Depp’s former management company has “since shown that they have no viable defense other than to follow through on their stated plan to attempt to smear Mr. Depp.”
In a complaint filed Monday, and obtained by PEOPLE, Depp’s legal team also alleged to “have uncovered additional evidence of illegal conduct by TMG around bank loans.” According to the court documents, Depp’s lawyers claim that his former business manager at TMG “snuck self-serving provisions into a bank loan agreement in a scheme to grab millions of dollars in payments for himself and other advisors on Mr. Depp’s film residuals.”
Finally, Depp’s lawyer told PEOPLE, “Today we have shown definitively that TMG systematically failed to pay Mr. Depp’s taxes on time for 16 straight years, leading to at least $8.3 million in penalties for Mr. Depp according to the IRS and the law firm that TMG itself hired.”
In response, a spokesperson for TMG told PEOPLE, “Johnny Depp’s amended complaint confirms there’s ‘no there there.’ Depp backs away from his most inflammatory claims in his original complaint and tries to fill the void by rehashing previous false allegations. TMG looks forward to setting the record straight and further exposing Depp’s persistent lies.”
Waldman countered in a statement to PEOPLE, saying that evidence supporting Depp has been redacted from the complaint at the request of TMG attorneys Joel and Robert Mandel. “In today’s filing, the only ‘there that isn’t there’ is the new evidence that the Mandels have gone to great lengths to temporarily seal from the public’s view.”
Outside of the case, Waldman said, “Mr. Depp is otherwise focused on his work, recently filming Murder on the Orient Express and LAbyrinth. He is looking forward to the release in May of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.” A Depp insider added, telling PEOPLE, “Johnny is doing really great. He’s very happy. These days he’s mostly focused on his career. He’s got big films out later this year, and is working on LAbyrinth, all huge projects.”
Even though I’m pretty sure Johnny Depp is a drunk, abusive monster, I also think it’s fairly likely that TMG did some shady sh-t. The thing about his taxes is what struck me – if they haven’t been doing his taxes properly for years, that’s a huge red flag that they were into some shady sh-t and Depp was largely unaware of it. Like, it’s perfectly possible to think everyone involved in this situation is awful, and still believe that Depp was likely victimized by some bad money men.

If your money men fail to file your taxes on time 16 years in a row, isn’t that kind of a red flag?
Right? You’re a victim for one year, then you’re part of the problem. I can’t feel bad for him with this. He probably was living a pretty extravagant lifestyle and he hasn’t really been in demand for awhile. This lawsuit seems like easy money to him.
It’s likely that the tax filings had a contingency attached, such as Johnny had to review them before filing, and had to sign. I don’t know about anyone else, but this is how I file. My accountant gets all of my info annually, prepares the paperwork, and then I go in and review and sign. This is done whether it is a hard filing, or an electronic filing.
How much you wanna bet that the reason Depp’s taxes weren’t filed on time for 16 years, is because we was consistently unavailable to sign on time, due to his little problem with booze and drugs?
Do you guys realize what is at stake for a CPA to mismanage an account as high profiled as Johnny Depp’s. I’ve worked in finance all of my adult life, and I have managed other high profiled accounts. You do not do this to ANY account, and you certainly don’t do it to someone like Johnny Depp. The reputation of your firm, and of yourself is not up for grabs. You don’t fuck this kind of thing up.
I believe TMG 100%. Let the numbers do the talking.
Get your sh*t together, Mr. Depp. You are a man who is in DIRE need of treatment, and you know it, as does everyone else in Hollywood, including accountants, tax professionals, brokers, and financial advisors.
Sorry I don’t waste my time feeling sympathetic towards an abuser…
Ditto. No care for him here. He is disgusting and I’ll never watch a movie he’s in.
same here. its always someone else fault when he is a drunk and a druggie
Completely agree. He’s gross and engaging in classic behavior of blaming everyone around him.
Well if he hadn’t been so busy boozing and smacking
Amber around, perhaps he would have noticed something
was wrong. Just saying.
Maybe part of the defrauding was lying to him that he would look good if he wrapped a scarf around his head and propped a newsboy cap on top of it at drunken angle.
LOL!! What a shame. Like he’s in The Little Rascals, playing pirates.
Good. It couldn’t happen to a better person.
Sorry, but even if someone else is doing your financials for you, you need to be aware of what is going on. If they didn’t file on time one time, get it, but 16 times – not even 2 times (if in a row). Also, honestly, read what you are signing – don’t care who you are.
Hmm, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was in on it given his lifestyle and spending habits. Once or twice you can play the victim card but 16 years, nope. 16 years mean you were aware of it and likely in on the scam.
In response, a spokesperson for TMG told PEOPLE, “Johnny Depp’s amended complaint confirms there’s ‘no there there.’
Ummm…? Nice typo lol
No it’s correct, it’s a statement sort of saying ‘there’s no substance there’, like ‘there’s no THERE there’, I think it’s from a tv show or movie or something.
Haw Haw!
Darlene Cates died yesterday (RIP) so i rewatched Gilbert Grape. Such a great film. Everyone in the movie were great and I think this is the last time I have seen Johnny not act like a goofy character. He didn’t have that irksome mannerism in ‘ Grape’.
As for his finances, it is very common for rich celebs to be defrauded by their own people. Celebs who become instantly rich and famous like kiddie actors, popstars and athletes are easily victimized because they do not have business acumen. Johnny has been in the biz since the 80s. He should be shrewd by this time. Maybe he surrounded himself with too many yes people like the way Michael Jackson and Manny Pacquiao did. People who told him he can be a serious musician or rockstar.
He doesn’t strike me as very on the ball..
…but he is on something:)
On the 8 ball.
It is common practice for celebs to have a go to bookkeeper in their business manager’s office. Keeping track of all of their holdings on a day-to-day basis is not common practice unfortunately. I have seen this happen over and over. Celebs being defrauded because they put too much trust in business managers and ignore the big picture happens all the time. He has many challenges and a very busy career. He was duped and it probably wasn’t hard to dupe him. TMG took out a $5MIL loan against the $9+MIL in equity on his N. Sweetzer property in 2013. He has owned the propty for 20+ years and it was paid for, yet went into preforeclosure at the end of October. I am sure that he received the Notice of Default with a WTF! The loan obviously came due and shows as past due by $4,287,324. It’s likely he sold off assets to pay the loan off and also to straighten out the arrears caused by TMG in other areas. A good team will downsize him and also bring him into the light so to speak with regard to his holdings. He gave these shysters too much power. Too bad it’s a civil case (slam dunk!). They should go to prison.
I’ll be interested to see how all of this turns out.
They stole his toothbrush too!
I think we’re on the verge of finally recognizing a common, devastating brain disorder called frontotemporal dementia that tends to strike people in their 50s and is wrongly called “midlife crisis.”
This insidious, horrible disorder turns good men and women into people who make your skin crawl because it attacks the frontal lobe first – the seat of civilization – but leaves memory and intellect intact.
Red flags are financial misjudgment, the collapse of long, loving relationships, poor hygiene, and egregious, unacceptable and sometimes criminal behavior. Someone who has this disease may even experience delusions. Recall, Mr. Depp wrote with his severed digit that his wife was “easy” because he believed she was unfaithful. They may also self-medicate by drinking excessively or taking drugs.
Hollywood is no place for people with this disorder because their sick behavior is excused when anywhere else they would be hauled off immediately to a doctor for serious help.
Let us also see how Mr. Cuba Gooding Jr. is doing in 2 or 3 years, someone else who seems to be following the pattern.
This disease is sometimes the precursor to motor diseases.
