Harry Styles debuts his new solo music on SNL: are you into this??

Harry4

As I keep saying, I’m into Harry Styles. I liked him during the One Direction years, to be fair. In interviews, he seemed smart and interesting, and frankly… he’s always been good at withholding and letting an air of mystery surround him. Which has also led to speculation by 1Ders that he’s romancing at least one of the other guys in One Direction. Which… if you want to believe that, God bless. Nowadays, Harry is going solo, with his new album out next month. His first single, “Sign of the Times,” came out a few weeks ago and it’s already a huge hit. I mean, even I like it. So I was pretty jazzed that Harry was the musical guest on this weekend’s SNL. First he performed “Sign of the Times.” While this isn’t the greatest live performance ever, it’s a good performance of a good song and I’m into it.

GOD I AM SO INTO THIS.

His second performance was “Ever Since New York,” which people already thought/believed was some kind of response to Taylor Swift, or a reference to her song “Welcome to New York.”

You know who Harry reminds me of here? Like, a non-douchey (or not-so-douchey) John Mayer. He even looks a lot like Mayer from 15 years ago. Anyway, I’m not as into this song as I am into “Sign of the Times.” But I’m still into it.

I’m also into Harry’s impression of Mick Jagger, which he did for a Celebrity Family Feud skit.

Basically, I now have a HUGE (bigly?) Harry Styles problem. Help me! I have the musical tastes of a tween!

They didn’t blow me away but it was fine for his first solo outing. He strained for the high notes on the first song. The second one he seemed to mumble and not open husband mouth to sing till the chorus. All fixable of course.
I thought the skits he was in were good (for him).

I didn’t expect to love his music, had the DVR remote in hand to skip over it… but I really enjoyed it. And his Jagger impression! I was laughing the whole time. Perfectly over the top.

  3. Jenns says:

I love the song. I was listening to it all weekend long. And I couldn’t tell you what else Harry has done. #old.

  4. felixswan2 says:

He totally has the John Mayer ugly stained singing face! He’s adorable, but it was distracting! I like the first song, the second one not so sure yet. Seemed a bit repetitive.

Not to mention super dilated pupils…reminds me of that Kathy Griffin story about how high he was and annoying Tom Hanks.

  5. Laura says:

I can’t lie, I’m into it! I like the first song much better than the second, but the second song is not bad, I’d just call it an album filler.

  6. poppy says:

i didn’t get the singing through clenched teeth.

  7. Lucy says:

    YESSSS. Honk for Harry!!! 🙂

  8. Anon says:

His music is pretty mediocre. Not completely terrible, but also not worth listening to.

    • Bella bella says:

He didn’t do anything for me. I thought his singing was so strained. And the faces he made — ouch.

  9. Beth says:

Not my type of music. I’m a metalhead. I listened to a little of the song on SNL, then I left the room to brush my teeth before it was over. He was awesome and funny as Mick Jagger

  10. Aren says:

I wasn’t expecting to like it, but I love it.
I just hate the SOTT lyrics, I found them too pop, but I guess I’m not the target audience.
In any case, he’s adorable and has all the charisma that all other OD members lacked together.

  11. Florence says:

I was disappointed with his singing to tell the truth. And I found his second song really bland. I expected more. As Mick Jagger he was cute though.

  12. Skins says:

It they are going to insist on making this guy an actor, somebody should explain the difference between acting and over-acting to him. I thought the Jagger thing was ridiculous. Didn’t look like him, didn’t sound like him and the gyrations were nothing at all like Mick. And then to keep doing it while the other actors were having their moments was pretty lame

    • virginfangirl2 says:

I noticed the camera on Mick while Travolta was speaking, so I’m guessing they wanted Harry to be all animated Mick while that was happening. I laughed my ass off at it, even if it wasn’t the most accurate depiction of Mick it cracked me up.

    • Bella bella says:

Yeah, I wasn’t so impressed with his Mick Jagger impression either.

  13. Alp says:

His vocals are so weak. Even on the actual track he sounded like a background singer.

  14. minx says:

Loved his acting on SNL. He was adorable.

  15. CityGirl says:

I really liked “Sign of the Times” (shocked because I’m old) but didn’t like the 2nd song – lasted less than a minute. I too, do not get singing thru clenched teeth, when clearly he doesn’t do it on all songs…..

  16. Adele Dazeem says:

Omg. That family feud clip made my day. I laughed so hard I fogged up the windows in my car. Thank you kaiser I needed that.

And totally agree, harry is HOT!!

  17. Brown says:

I am a HUGE harry fan. He is so kind and gracious, and I thought his Jagger sketch was hilarious… I love how he just went for it, all in, no embarrassment. I think he was nervous for his first solo performance so it wasn’t perfect, but I seriously love both songs. Can’t wait for the album. I’m glad he’s doing something a little different than what’s currently on the radio… would have been easy for him to crank out a catchy pop song and coast to the top of the charts, but I think he really wanted to do something he was proud of, regardless of the reaction.

    Also–loved the Gucci suit!

  18. virginfangirl2 says:

I LOVE the first song. Hope it does well. But then again I went country as I’ve grown tired of the pop music and also tired of listening to the older stuff because I enjoy hearing new songs. Routing for the popularity of this sound, it’s one of the sounds I like.

  19. YepIsaidit says:

It sounds a lot like his music with the last 1-D album. they called that dad rock too. I guess he was the main influencer in the band. It sucks.

  20. Katherine says:

I like both Sign Of The Times and this other New York song, it’s mature and just something I am typically into

  21. feebee says:

I only saw the first one and wasn’t impressed. I’ll put it down to not being in the target audience. I liked the sound of his voice in the 1D songs but hearing only it for a whole song esp when I didn’t really like the song made me realize why he was put with others instead of getting support as a possibly solo artist.

  22. Luci Lu says:

He better hire a new musical coach who will tell him the truth, and learn to sing in a lower register. He’s cute, but American audiences will not forgive more than two mediocre performances like that shit show he did on SNL. We got Bruno Mars and the Hooligans baby!

    • Bella bella says:

A lower register might help. I was surprised by how unimpressive his voice was — found it painful to watch and listen to him and did other things while he was singing.

  23. Poodlemom says:

I love Harry Styles too! But the second song steals a guitar riff from the Badfinger song “Baby Blue”. Do you hear it ?
