Tyrese Gibson apologized for the ‘delivery’ of his consistent misogyny

NYC Premiere Of 'Fate Of The Furious'

As we discussed last week, Tyrese Gibson has some not-so-fascinating thoughts about women. Wait, did I say women? I meant thoughts about “sluts, skeezers, hoes and tramps.” Tyrese has made it his mission, over the years, to offer his analysis on relationships, the battle of the sexes, and what women should do to please men. He never really offers advice to men about what they could do to change and make life more pleasurable for women. It’s always women who need to change. Women are the ones who need to stop nagging, stop sleeping with so many men, stop letting men buy us gifts, stop going out to dinner with men and more. After last week’s moment and subsequent backlash, Tyrese is finally apologizing. This is what he posted on Instagram (I only made some minor edits for language and spacing):

My mother taught me better than this….. lesson learned in life you will learn that It’s not always “what” you say, it’s the “how” we choose to say it. For the record I’m far from a misogynist, a male chauvinist or flat out mean….. My intentions were there but my delivery f–king horrible…. And clearly all the way off…. And for that I sincerely apologize to all of the ladies… Even after this apology…. Some may likely decide to NOT forgive me…. Time and consistency heals all wounds….

Although I’ve been consistently for years speaking on these topics and some of the same words in my message, I have never experienced what I am experiencing right now. – I’ve been getting dragged and feel the heat from my poor choice of words and approach to my messages, trust me….. Please accept this as my sincere apology for my poor choice of words – Sh-t gets real when it goes from a social media dragging to my own wife giving me the side eye and coming at me, even she’s not happy with the way I’ve conducted myself….

It’s crazy how non-public figures can say and do some really dumb sh-t and it will stay amongst your family and friends or local in your hood…. When you have been an entertainer for 15+ years the whole WORLD is literally watching you grow up & learn, bump your head, make mistakes and evolve as the world watches…. This is a real lesson learned…

This is not just a regular IG post for me. I want to truly say that I’m sorry, I’m not APOLOGIZING in an effort to be politically correct, I apologize as a man first for the things that I’ve recently said about choices women have the right to make, for the terms that I’ve used and the way I’ve come across. I was raised to think and feel certain ways, and I’m learning new things that combat those messages. I am not perfect or all knowing, nor am I the one to claim to be. I’ve learned things through experience which I share, and through these last couple of weeks, I’ve learned a lot through this well deserved internet dragging…… This is about a man owning up to his actions, taking responsibility, recognizing how to do better, and actually doing better. Ladies you deserve better…

[From Tyrese’s Instagram]

He talks like he’s a 19 year old kid who made a boo-boo. He’s a 38-year-old man, a man on his second marriage, a man who is father to a daughter, and he has a long history of misogynoir, sexism and misogyny. This was not a one-time thing, a moment where he meant to say one thing and it came out wrong. He actually believes what he said originally and he believes it was his place to say that sh-t (over and over again). “For the record I’m far from a misogynist, a male chauvinist or flat out mean…..” Yeah, I guess he expects us to take his word for it, all evidence to the contrary? Especially given the very next line: “My intentions were there but my delivery f–king horrible.” No. We weren’t mad about your delivery, we were mad about YOUR INTENTIONS. We were mad about your message. We were mad about your thoughts and words. Ugh.

Oh no honey, it wasn’t how you said, it was definitely what you said. I appreciated the how, to be honest. Made it all the more clear who you are. And there’s no apologizing for that. We heard you.

  2. Lucy says:

Well, apology NOT accepted. You, Sir, hate women.

Another one who doesn’t think he/she will be called out for the person he/she really is and when the heat is on, can’t take it. Think he can thank Trump for ” I have never experienced what I am experiencing right now. – I’ve been getting dragged and feel the heat from my poor choice of words and approach to my messages,”.

Takiya and Jade said in the latest Gettin grown Podcast : GO BE INSIGHTFUL AND GROW IN SILENCE!, I needn’t hear any more Thoughts Of Tyrese on anything forever Amen ( BTDubs This apology must be after his accountants and managers explained to him who buys his music, for what was his music used, and who clicks on his page… This Whole time, you guys, he thought it was Dudes!! LOLOOLOOL I Guess?)

      “GROW IN SILENCE”

Why is it that none of these men will ever do that? Instead, they just carry on sucking all the air out of the room with endless wankery.

“my mother taught me better than this..” but then he says “I was raised to think and feel certain ways, and I’m learning new things that combat those messages”?…”I’ve learned things through experience which I share” what are you sharing and experiencing that you explain to women how to be a women? and whinning that supposedly a non-celebrity can say whatever they want but it wont have repercussions but the minute celebrities do they get dragged! ah non! celebrity or not it’s all the same. But you use your celebrity cred to think you get to call us hoes sluts and all. and now it backfired and you wonder why the red flag? cant get it all. Steve Harvey is clearly your brother. ok.. years of sexism and misogyny and.. a $$$$$$$$$ movie out later. blame the “public figure out there’ blame the “woaw I didn’t y’all expect this backlash you girls are so thin skinned aka Im sleeping in the couch now and my wife wants me to ‘apologize”.

  6. Chelly says:

I like the “non-public figures” comment. Um, but you ARE a public figure who has said these things time & time again PUBLICALLY! Not at the kitchen table w your family and friends or on the front steps in the “hood” to your boys…smh, this guy. Keep side eyeing him, wifey cause he’s talking about you too

Tyrese is right about one thing. He’s been saying this type of crass self-centered crap for years. It just never came back to bite him this hard before. His thoughts on overweight people, women and gays are straight out of junior high school or a Steve Harvey playbook. Never constructive, always highly critical. He’s very high profile thanks to these “FAST FURIOUS, TRANSFORMER & other Blow stuff up Movies” so his platform is bigger. He won’t shut up so it’s time he started actually thinking before he speaks now.

    • Jeesie says:

Exactly. He’s gotten away with it his whole career because people only remember he exists when one of these franchise films comes out. This time he was stupid enough to air his thoughts right when a massive one was opening, so he had an audience beyond his fans and similarly minded individuals.

      F&F should drop him.

  8. Nicole says:

    You still canceled. Next

  9. HK9 says:

Oh no…it IS what you said. No method of delivery would have made it anything other than the misogynist crap that it was.

  10. Otaku Fairy says:

Even without the misogynistic slurs he used, the overall message was still misogynistic: “…BECAUSE THEY DON’T HAVE NO STANDARDS. THEY READY TO HAVE SEX WITH ANY AND EVERYTHING that want to have sex with them. But when… YOU ACTUALLY LOVE YOURSELF, YOU KNOW YOUR VALUE AND YOUR SELF WORTH and YOU HOLD OUT until God sends you what’s yours…So sometimes they be talking mess to women that are single but I HAVE RESPECT FOR THEM because if you’re single.., YOU ACTUALLY HOLDING OUT BECAUSE YOU HAVE YOUR VALUE. You have women that are active out in these streets, they going to lunches and dinners every night. Private planes, mega yachts.. They’re never without. However, it comes with a cost, YOU GONNA PUT A LOT OF MILES ON YOURSELF DOWN THERE, come on.” So while I think there’s some sincerity to his apology, he still doesn’t get what’s wrong with what he actually said. He’s like a lot of the people who miss the point with this and think that as long as they don’t call women specific 4 and 5-letter words ( or even if they just say “I said she was acting/dressing like one, I didn’t say she was one”), they’ve avoided participating in any misogyny or rape culture. But whether you straight out label women who seem more sexual than you feel they should be ‘sluts, whores, thots, tramps, an hoes’ or you just say that women who seem more sexual than you feel they should be are promiscuous, have no standards, lack self-respect, have lost or don’t know their value, are less worthy of your respect, are acting based on ‘daddy issues’ or sexual trauma, can’t be real feminists, are objectifying, or are putting a lot of miles on themselves (nice objectification there!), etc. you’re complicit in the same sexist system as the ones using the dehumanizing slurs. It was the message AND the delivery.

    • pinetree13 says:

What he meant to say was: “the more sex you have, the less you are worth” oh yes dear, it was the language not the message that upset people….

Totally agree with your post Otaku Fairy. “they going to lunches and dinners every night.”

Going for lots of lunch and dinner dates? THE HORROR
