Duchess Kate in cream Catherine Walker on Easter Sunday: lovely or meh?

Here are some photos of the royal family at Windsor Castle on Easter Sunday. Unlike this past Christmas, it seems like the extended family all came together for Easter this year. My theory is that the Queen was a lot sicker than people realized over Christmas and the Windors got a little bit of a shock to the system, so they’re making an effort with this holiday in case it’s the Queen’s last Easter. Even the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge came out to Windsor Castle! Other royals in attendance: Princess Beatrice, Eugenie, the Earl and Countess of Wessex and their kids and the Princess Royal (Anne) and her son Peter and his wife Autumn. Prince Harry was not there, because he’s spending Easter with Meghan Markle in Toronto.

As for William and Kate, photographers got a shot of Kate curtsying to the Queen and media outlets are treating that like it’s some huge deal. No! Kate always has to curtsy to the Queen. It just usually doesn’t happen in public. For Easter Sunday, Kate wore a new Elizabeth Walker coat which looks like about five other cream coats she owns. I guess she needed a new one… with a Peter Pan collar. Which I hate. This piece is bespoke, which means that Kate actually wanted this collar. Combined with the pillbox hat, Kate looks like she’s doing 1960s Stewardess Cosplay. I’m not into it. But hey, at least she didn’t flash anyone on Easter.

The 117 year old Italian woman who just passed away had a fresher style than K. Middleton.

    • Seraphina says:

💯 % correct. She has no sense of style. Never had it and never will. Her outfits is a disaster.

      • bluhare says:

It might be a bit boring, but disaster’s a bit of an overkill don’t you think?

      • teacakes says:

She’s boring and has all the presence of a wet dishcloth but ‘disaster’? For a Peter Pan collar? Let’s get some perspective here please.

      • FLORC says:

I’m lost on the wording of the comment. Outfits are a disaster or this outfit is a disaster?
This 1 isnt. Others sure were.

    • MaybeTomorrow says:

She looks like she’s playing an English nurse in a WWII movie.

    • BLewis1776 says:

Boom! Harsh, but true. There is nothing wrong with it in particular it just lacks inspiration like everything she does. She has so many designers at her finger tips, so much money to spend and this is what she wears…the same thing over and over. Okay….say something nice, um, at least they showed up.

    • Jaded says:

Does she get to be daring with her style or does the monarchy frown on that? I feel like maybe she has a super strict dress code to follow

      • LAK says:

        This is on her.

All the royal ladies, blood and in-laws have fun with their style even on occasions calling for conservative guidelines. Kate has no sense of fun with her style except when she’s theme dressing. On those occasions, she dresses in as literal an interpretation of the theme as possible.

    • Dbw says:

I snorted hard at this 😀
      +1!!!!!!

    • Liberty says:

Slowsnow: thanks for the best laugh of my day. 🙂

    • Chinoiserie says:

It’s Easter Sunday outfit, it does not need to be high fashion, she looks nice and appropriate in it and that was what she was going for. I understand complaints about her fashion (even if I personally like lace, buttons and Peter Pan collars she gets complaints for) since it’s quite boring has other issues but I don’t get what it’s so wrong with this one.

  2. Catherine says:

I wish you had a shot of the Queen’s hat! It was insanely gorgeous, fresh, and cool. I love her and her love of “show girl” colors and diamonds 💖👑.

Kate looks like a very pretty nurse, in full medical uniform, working the USO in 1943.

    • Sal says:

It’s the hat and hairstyle that make her look like a nurse. She looks soooo matronly.

    • Maria says:

That was my first thought too, that she looked like a nurse, more like in the sixties. And I am not crazy about white. Autumn Kelly looked smart in royal blue, and I thought the queen looked great. At least Kate wore her hair up, and there was no flashing or crotch clutching. So that’s something I guess.

    • Adele Dazeem says:

Bahahah thank you Catherine, so freaking true!

    • Harla Jodet says:

Maybe her and William have “plans” later, wink, wink, playing nurse and patient maybe 🙂

  3. Who ARE these people? says:

Meet the real life Cherry Ames, nurse.

  4. Rapunzel says:

The coat isn’t new. She wore it on a Canada tour. These colors are so gross on her though. She needs jewel tones.

  5. Meow says:

Grossly matchy-matchy. Liz, please, tell your granddaughter-in-law to hire a stylist. Or else chuck her in the Tower so she can live out her daydreams of being a fairytale princess.

  6. Megan says:

With better styling, this would have been a good look. Kate just doesn’t get shoes, hats, and jewelry, which is why she needs a professional stylist.

    • bluhare says:

She needs an accessories stylist. I think her personal taste is pretty good, but she needs to bump the accessories game. I am a terrible accessorizer; I admit it, but I don’t have to get photographed for the world to see. If I did, I’d pick out the clothes and let someone put it together for me.

    • minx says:

      Yes. And her hair.

    • FLORC says:

On occasion she does nail it In jewel tones. I am left with the impression after years of fashion examples she thinks pale colors and wash outs are for church. Which… sure, but you can do muted jewel tones and better cuts or prints. There’s loads of styling that is just horrendous here.

  7. Scal says:

I mean it’s faint praise, but in that last picture she looks better than Autumn and the York sisters. And clearly wearing a slip is a family requirement because Bea clearly needs one. Yikes. So not appropriate for easter service.

    • AnnaKist says:

I agree, Scal. Autumn’s coat thingy completely swamps her, and the two Yorkies, for young, modern Royal women, always look like a pair of frumps.

      • Kaz says:

Autumn looks like she is bundled in a horse blanket.

      • Megan says:

Why is Eugenie wearing a trench coat on a sunny day?

      • notasugarhere says:

Eugenie is fond of these trench coats and trench dresses. This one is a repeat from Trooping the Colour 2014. If you look back through Easter, Ascot, Trooping through the years Eugenie shows up a lot in putty clothes. Why I do not know.

      • Shambles says:

For all the sh*t we give Kate for being obsessed with buttons and dressing like a lace doily, can we be fair and look at the York girls’ ensembles?

      • minx says:

The York girls dress terribly, they need someone to help them.

OT–my niece manages a women’s shelter in NYC and a couple of months ago Eugenie toured the center and posed for pictures (she was stunningly pretty in the closeup pic I saw). My niece said Eugenie was kind and gracious, interested in the work they do there.

    • Reece says:

That’s the light and shadows on Bea’s dress as she walks. It’s lined except for the arms and shoulders.

Now the hat/fascinator is ??? I do like the colors though.

      • Scal says:

I saw some other pictures where you could clearly see that the lining only came to the first tier below the waist.

      • notasugarhere says:

In all the pictures I see, the lining goes to the hem. It is thin, so sunlight is still shining through and casting a lace pattern on her legs, but the lining is hem-length. The sleeves are unlined, as is the yoke around the shoulders and collar.

    • mar_time says:

I personally think Bea looks great…Kate would wear that same dress then make it boring. Bea’s pairing it with fun purple shoes and a fascinator that picks up on that purple. Kate looks boring as always…why didn’t she pair that coat with a colorful hat or shoes??

      • cindyp says:

Agree, at least the others have fun with colors & accessories. May miss the mark sometimes but at least they try. Kate looks like a tall glass of milk. How about the coat with a fun hat & shoes with a colorful brooch. Even the Queen dresses more daring than her. Just ridiculous.

  8. justsaying says:

I love the Queen’s hat with the flowers!

  9. Anare says:

Kate’s whole look is so fusty and outdated, who wears crap like that? She looked ridiculous. Also a Peter Pan collar is more rounded than that. That is just a boring fugly collar.

  10. RedWeatherTiger says:

    Like a narrow vanilla milkshake.

  11. sarri says:

That makeup… she fell into a rouge box – again.

  12. manta says:

This just shows I’m a lost cause at judging these things. Usually, the fact that she wears buttony coats positively annoys people to the point of anger. So my first thought looking at the picture was, good no visible button, she’s gonna score some points.
    Again, I realize I’m helpless.
PS: I find what Beatrice is wearing tragic so that must mean she’s the winner here.

    • bluhare says:

I’ll come in your corner, because I don’t think she looks bad either.

      • LAK says:

        I think she’s perfect 1950s cosplay.

Le sigh. The coat is beautiful, but needed different coloured hat, bag and shoes even if she stuck to those designs.

      • Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

@LAK – i agree. With her body type she needs to mix up the colours to help balance out the look, the outfit accentuates her inverted triangle body type.

Its not a bad look on her but as I keep saying on these threads she needs someone who can put a look together – this is something that is very lacking with her. Individually the pieces are great but the overall look is badly put together. She needs a professional stylist.

      • Narak says:

I think it’s Handmaids Tale all the way. Especially the hat.

      • bluhare says:

You guys are harsh. It’s bland, but that’s as far as I’ll go.

  13. MunichGirl says:

Kate’s outfit makes her look like a WW1 nurse.

  14. L84Tea says:

Nope. I knew this look did not work at all for her the second I realized that Eugenie and Beatrice look better than she does. And I think Eugenie and Bea usually look pretty awful. But I’m digging Eugenie’s collar on her coat!

    • seesittellsit says:

You have got to be kidding. Kate’s hat makes her look a bit matronly, but the York girls look like clowns. They look staggeringly awful.

      • L84Tea says:

I’m not saying they look great. I’m saying compared to Kate’s look, they look great. That’s how BLAH I think Kate looks. I do however like Eugenie’s coat–that’s all.

  15. bread says:

Everything about this – even the hair – is very Nurse Ratched.

  16. Indira says:

Is it just me or has she started to wear higher high heels?

  17. Olga says:

Well, I like her coat. That’s it.

  18. Becks says:

I like the coat in itself (she wore it in Canada as well), but I find the whole look to be very boring. Definitely meh. I don’t love what the York princesses are wearing, but in the picture with them and Autumn, Kate looks so out of place. She’s wearing a lovely streamlined coat but still looks frumpy.

  19. Prince says:

Kate and Wills look really old and she should hire someone to do her makeup because I think she’s doing it on her own.

  20. amy says:

IMO, Kate looks like an air hostess. Did her mother dress her?

    • seesittellsit says:

It’s the hat -the coat itself is a perfectly nice tailored number suitable for a royal Easter service. The hat looks almost like a throwback to Jackie Kennedy, who once wore a similar hat well back on her head (memory foggy) but with much more style. The hat sets the outfit back 40 years.

      Meoowww on the reference to Mom’s air hostess days . . . now, now . . . .

    • Where'sMyTiara says:

      “Doors to manual” :eyeroll:

  21. Bitsy says:

No no no Beatrice, you do NOT wear see-through to church! I can see the outline of her thighs and under pants….sigh. This looks like something a Kardashian would wear to church so Kate wins the day! Even if by default…

  22. callmeishmael says:

She looks like a milk lolly.

I have a deep urge to snatch her hat and put it on William’s head. Dude, it’s game over. The follicle factory has ceased production. Shave off the scraps. You’re kind of a dickhead, so you might as well look like one.

  23. seesittellsit says:

The coat’s lovely, the hat is a bit matronly. Speaking of which, her cheeks and under jaw look a bit fuller than usual in closeups . . .

But let’s face it, the real clothes story is the York girls with their little one-egg frying pans on their heads, and Beatrice putting a little bronze pan atop a a too short white lace dress suited only to a taller slimmer 12 year old, along with clunky shoes that belong on a similarly built person.

Lawdy, there has GOT to be such a thing as a Bad Dress Chromosome, because the York girls definitely inherited it.

    • Kaz says:

I think the sisters really could do with the services of a good stylist to help them out a bit. They have curvy figures and often wear things which just don’t flatter them!

      • bluhare says:

I agree. With notable exceptions most of the time I wonder if they looked in a mirror before they left.

  24. Kaz says:

Prince William was accompanied by his nurse when he attended Easter service at Windsor…..

  25. Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

Again another great set of pieces that have been put together badly, at least the mop was up – i hate the whole block colour obsession she has.

I loved Beatrice’s shoes and Princess Anne’s fierce hat.

As for the curtseying – protocol is that its done when they first meet the Queen that day (usually in private) but as they go out of their way to spend as little time as possible with Her Maj she and him had to show respect in public in front of the paps. All the rest of the family had arrived earlier or were staying at Windsor – the DoLittles arrived just in time for the service then probably bolted bak to Amner in the helicopter that Granny gave them.

    • notasugarhere says:

Entirely possible, although in other shots there is a picture of Eugenie, Beatrice, and W&K with HM. Eugenie starting to curtsey while Beatrice is not. Maybe both W&K and Eugenie were seeing HM for the first time that day, while Beatrice had seen her earlier.

      • The Hench says:

The one thing I will give Kate here is that she seems to be giving a genuine smile at HM as she curtseys. Given her world class gurning ability most of the time – especially when small children are involved – this surprised me, in a good way.

But ‘hell yes’ to all those comments about she needs a stylist, if only for the accessories.

  26. Talie says:

You can tell Beatrice and Eugenie try so hard to be fashion-forward, but it just never works. The one thing about Kate is that she does look effortless because she keeps it simple.

    • notasugarhere says:

B&E try hard and give new designers chances, and unfortunately it often doesn’t work. When they stick with established designers (Elie Saab, Vivienne Westwood), they look great. To me, Kate Middleton doesn’t look effortless but as others said, she appears dressed in a costume.

  27. Kaz says:

Is Kate pregnant? She looks quite busty!

    • bluhare says:

Life & Style says she is. But I also think they’ve said she’s pregnant with twins before too.

    • HappyMom says:

I think she’s waiting until after Pippa’s wedding. Since we all know how incapacitated she is at the beginning of her pregnancies-I doubt she’d take a chance to feel or look crummy for her sister’s big day.

    • Plain Jane says:

I was wondering the same thing! Her face looks really puffy in these photos!

  28. Kaz says:

I actually think the younger generation of Royal women should revolt and refuse to wear hats. The Queen looks great, but the younger ones wear the most bizarre array of saucers and weird bits sticking out from their heads. So unnecessary in the 21st century.

    • Cheryl says:

I disagree. Just like all countries and people love to hold on to culture so do the British. This is British culture. It would be the same as saying that women from India should stop wearing saris or African women to stop wearing a m’boubou because it is so unnecessary in the 21st century. I personally love fascinators (that is a type of hat that the British wear). British is being lost and to me that is really quite sad. All cultures are important. I appreciate that some people really want to end all that is British but like other cultures these things need to be respected and appreciated and enjoyed.

    • teacakes says:

Why? It’s a British custom, and millinery is an art that’s actually remained alive because of it.

I say keep the hats, I think they’re charming and add character to a look.

    • bluhare says:

I love hats. They don’t have to be saucers and poky things.

  29. Lainey says:

Cream coat, cream bag, cream shoezzzzzzzzzzz.
Boring boring boring! She needs to learn how to bring colour in with her accessories.
I’d love to see a video of her curtsy. The ones I’ve seen so far, she didn’t have her legs crossed right. Would love to see if she’s improved. The fact that she was only curtsying then shows that her and William only showed up for the service. You only curtsy the first time you see the Queen and none of the other women around her are curtsying.

  30. Citresse says:

From the waist up she looks like a worker at WWI makeshift triage unit.

  31. WendNerd says:

Any note on the royal family’s acknowledgement on Passover? Kate, and, by extension, her children, may be ethnic Jews (even baptized as CoE, they’re Ashkenazi Jews). Charles is into inter-faith dialogue and has participated in seders before.

    • LAK says:

Due to our history with Jews, it’s not a safe assumption that everyone with a Jewish sounding name is of Jewish heritage or even practising in secret or otherwise. Many surnames in England denote family trade or area or liege lord.

If Carole and her brother are Jewish, it’s been lost in the mists of time. And in any case, comes from their Paternal line rather than the maternal line. Their mother Dorothy Harrison comes from a long line of people in North East England which has settled scandinavian ancestry.

Jews, when they were finally allowed back in England settled in East London or Essex and surrounding areas. Any links to that area in Carole’s geneology seem to be paternal rather than maternal.

That said, the genealogy published at the time of the royal wedding would have included any religious affliation that was different from CoE because that was an important detail for the royals and especially the heir. And we would have had the religion discussion much earlier than we did because it would have affected the religion of the children. It’s important as future heads of the CoE that all heirs are raised in that church.

If Kate had been required to convert, like Camilla, Autumn and Philip ( catholics and Greek Orthodox respectively), we would have known about it. Instead, we heard that she had been baptised as a youngster and confirmed CoE prior to her wedding.

    • notasugarhere says:

Along with LAK’s great explanation, I think that theory has been debunked. I haven’t seen calls for the BRF to change their behavior related to Lady Freddie Windsor’s possible childhood religion.

Meghan Markle’s religion is also unknown, although her father is Jewish (not maternal line). She has written about celebrating Christmas morning as a kid, and attended Catholic school which you can do if not Catholic. There is a quote running around from the Jews in Suits story by Melissa Langsam Braunstein, about a police officer in Austin being interested to meet a real New York Jew. Someone online has wrongly attributed it to MM as a story about her faith, and it has been copied and re-posted with wrong attribution in a lot of places.

      • LAK says:

Oh yes. I forgot about Sophie Winkleman’s religion. I’m not even sure she converted to marry Frederick Windsor. Do you know if she did? The kids are definitely being brought up CoE.

      • HappyMom says:

@LAK-my understanding is that Sophie Winkleman’s father is/was Jewish, she herself was raised Christian.

      • LAK says:

Happymom: i keep forgetting that Eve Pollard isn’t Sophie’s mother. I read Winkleman and jump to Claudia Winkleman, her half sister and forget they share a father rather than a mother.

        Thanks for reminder and correction😊

Her mother isn’t Jewish, father describes himself as a non practising Jew according to wikigoogle.

    • Cee says:

I have a jewish surname and that doesn’t mean I’m jewish. My paternal grandfather converted to catholicism so I have no claims to judaism even if through his line I’m a jewish russian.

  32. Wfabb says:

She would look so much better if she just held her shoulders and back straight instead of slumping. I think she should watch The Princess Diaries a few times to learn how to act like royalty.

  33. perplexed says:

Her face looks a bit fuller. I’m not sure. Pretty face, but still so blah.

I actually don’t mind hats. I think the hats make Kate look less boring than she usually does — maybe because she has to put her hair up?

  34. Rae says:

I’m going against the grain; I really like it.

    Very Jackie O.

Her makeup is rouge heavy, but otherwise I can’t find fault.

I really don’t like her either, so this is a rarity.

  35. JustJen says:

The header photo reminded me of The Handmaid’s Tale. Such a weird hat/hair piece thing…

  36. Adele Dazeem says:

York girls, if you are reading this please contact me! I know how to dress curvy girls and without breaking the bank. I’d LOOOOVE to give you girls a makeover, free of charge!!

  37. KBeth says:

I think she looks fine, a boring look but perfectly appropriate for the occasion.

  38. Merritt says:

Kate looks better than the York Sisters. But she really should wear jewel tones since they suit her complexion better.

  39. Tiffany says:

That coat looks extremely tight in the bust on her. Did she get another set of alterations to do that. Why is showing off her bust so important.

  40. minx says:

She needs to stand up straight and get better hairstyling (a cut, first). Until then nothing she wears will look very good.

    • notasugarhere says:

When it is related to work, 9 times out of 10 her hair is flyaway, in everybody’s way, inappropriate. Because she doesn’t want to be there.

For an unofficial family event? A pap stroll where she gets to march out and glory in her position in the lineup? Hair so “done” it is in a hairnet. She. Is. So. Obvious.

  41. Cerys says:

I didn’t mind her outfit. Yes, it’s a bit bland and could do with better accessories but it was appropriate for the occasion. There was no flashing and no hair flopping over her face. For once, I thought she looked better than the other royal ladies. The York sisters and Autumn looked awful. I didn’t like Sophie’s outfit either.

  42. vava says:

Little Miss Beige in yet another uninspiring appearance.

I’m more interested in how her face changes shape on a regular basis. Is this PMS bloating going on?

  43. Starlight says:

Harry is in DM talking about his crisis after his mother died but there is a picture of Diana wearing exactly the same hat in satin pale blue in exactly the same way. there are some photographs of Kate beaming like a Cheshire Cat but also one as if she is talking to herself alongside Wills who looks like he is deep in thought. Some commenter on the DM posted why is she wearing so much make up its plastered and my view alongside the cream ensemble it is all too much.

  44. Joannie says:

Her outfit is well tailored and I love the hat. She looks good. Cant say the same for the others.

  45. Tallia says:

    She always looks blah.

  46. Svea says:

It’s about making the old Queen happy. And why shouldn’t that be a thing? She deserves it. I’d make my grandmother happy too.

  47. Cee says:

Can we talk about how tall Lady Louise is?!

  48. Bliss 51 says:

Jacqueline Kennedy wore pillbox hats during the White House years, memorably the pink pillbox that matched the pink Chanel suit worn the day of the Kennedy assassination. She was the essence of chic and it was not simply the clothes she wore but an air of charisma and elegance. Middleton’s style is boring but that as it should be for a member of the British Royal Family.

  49. Kitty says:

    Her fashion is so boring.

  50. Sage says:

    I mean, it’s safe…. I get a Nurse Ratched vibe.

  51. HK9 says:

It’s the collar that makes it a dud. The coat itself is lovely, but the peter pan collar is childish which draws attention to the fact that she’s a grown woman making her look old not classic. This woman needs a stylist ASAP.

  52. bonobchick says:

I read a people mag write-up that was fawning all over itself regarding her “perfect” curtsy.

Anywho, I think this would’ve been so much cuter with color. It’s not awful but I find it very bland, right down to the makeup.

  53. Laura says:

I think Kate looks lovely! She looks like a lady, albeit from days gone by, but a lady nonetheless.

  54. Egla says:

Everything is appropriate with her in this case I give her that BUT she seems so…bland, generic, mono chromic. She could put some color here and there: the shoes, the hat, the clutch. That color she favors The Beige is booooriiiing and ugly. Doesn’t she own a mirror.
As for the others some look ok some look meh but certainly not boring.

  55. KatM says:

I have to be honest, I am no fan of hers, but I think she dresses very well. My complaint is regarding the hair. Thankfully, she wore it up on this occasion. If you look at the other women with her, they all look kind of ridiculous in their outfits. I am not trying to be mean, but those outfits are really not very becoming on either of them. Catherine dresses in a very clean, simple, and conservative style, but it is always very tasteful and becoming. Here is the difference between her and the Yorks. Years from now, she will look timeless in photos. The Yorks will look clunky. I think Princess Eugenie would look great if she kept it simple and clean. It is when they wear these loud hats and busy outfits that they do themselves no favors.

    • notasugarhere says:

I find her clothing is often overdone, she’s messed with the designer original to fake the look of longer legs, and the result is both unattractive and unflattering. At least the Yorks try to inject some style and fun.

  56. Cate says:

It’s fine, appropriate, her hair is back. But it does need some color or accessorizing. That coat would be the perfect backdrop for a showy brooch, for example.

Bea’s dress is on the short side but overall I find her and Eugenie far more interesting to look at and I like that they take risks–if you’re going to spend the $$$ on the clothes, you might as well have some fun with them. Even their silly little saucer hats are sort of fun and endearing. Kate could do with a few lessons from them on shoe game. I think they both have her beat when it comes to hairstyling also–they still have some length but their styles are both much fresher looking and flattering, while KM is drowning in wiglets and extensions.

  57. NOLA says:

I just watched a video of the family walking down, as well as when the Queen arrived. I saw two other women curtsy – I think one was Sophie? So it wasn’t just Will and Kate who didn’t meet privately with Elizabeth and Philip ahead of the church service.

Also, I noticed Autumn and Peter (??) were walking down the hill hand in hand. I thought that was sweet but it also made me pay closer attention to how W&K were walking. They seem so stilted in comparison. I guess I really am one of the silly Americans who bought into the whole “it was a love match” story. It makes me sad to see their body language.

Finally, I only saw on angle on Anne’s hat, but I kind of loved it. It was unexpected (for me anyway). I think Kate looks fine but when you see how most of everyone else dressed, she does seem dull and lackluster. There’s zero personality.
