Warning: this post contains spoilers for the first season of 13 Reasons Why
Despite courting controversy due to its subject matter and graphic depictions of rape and suicide, Netflix’s series 13 Reasons Why has been renewed for a second season. According to Deadline, the streaming network was ready to order another 13 episodes of the series, set to premiere in 2018, last week but didn’t make the official announcement until Monday. In a statement, the network said the upcoming season “picks up in the aftermath of Hannah Baker’s (Katherine Langford) death and the start of the characters’ complicated journeys toward healing and recovery.”
The network is excited about the renewal. A post on the show’s Twitter feed on Sunday declared, “Their story isn’t over. Season 2 of #13ReasonsWhy is coming.” Executive producer Selena Gomez shared the same message on Instagram.

The series finale did leave viewers with some unanswered questions, which didn’t stop the wild theories from circulating. One of which involves Hannah’s creepy stalker/photographer Tyler (played by Devin Druid). In episode 13, we see his secret collection of weapons. Later, in his photography studio, we see he has pictures displayed of all of the students who bullied him – including Clay. As you may recall, Clay (Dylan Minnette) spread a naked photo of Tyler around the campus, causing him to be (further) ridiculed by his classmates. Will Tyler seek revenge in season 2?
There’s also the last episode revelation that Alex shot himself. Fans are theorizing that he was shot by Tyler – I mean, he’s got an arsenal of weapons handy. Miles Heizer, who plays Alex, has seemingly shut that theory down. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he said:
“It was interesting to see similarities between Alex and Hannah, because there are a lot of warning signs throughout the season,” he says. And just because he may have attempted suicide, Heizer says that doesn’t mean he’s necessarily out of the picture. “That’s another subject that’s very rarely shown onscreen and is probably a lot more common than people think it is. People attempting to take their lives and it not happening, I’m sure that will bring a crazy set of issues. It would be interesting to go into that.”
Although it was often, tough to sit through, I am looking forward to a second season of this show. I’ve grown fond of the actors. And, on a lighter note, the cast members showed up at the MTV Movie & TV Awards on Sunday night. Katherine, Dylan and Miles joined the rest of the cast to present the award for Show of the Year to another show with a great young cast, Netflix’s Stranger Things. I may not have cable, but I sure seem to be getting some great programming thanks to Netflix. (I still want to see RuPaul’s Drag Race though.)

Amazon prime has Ru’s Drag Race
Chiming in to add that it’s currently streaming Seasons 5,6, and 7. I think Season 5 will expire at some point in the near future (possibly after the complete airing of Season 9) and Season 8 will appear.
Hi guys, guess I should have said that I wanted to watch it for free! It’s on iTunes, but it’s $30 for the season, which is too rich for this starving writer’s blood. Thanks for the feedback though!
I’m intrigued by a second season. It’d be interesting to explore her parents’ civil suit. I’m curious about how/if Hannah Baker will be featured now that her tapes are gone though.
Speaking of the suit- do they have a legal leg to stand on?
The sexual assault took place outside of school and watching the show there was no instance of systematic bullying taking place on school premises.
The messages on the toilet walls seem to refer to many different students. The list involved many other students and throughout the series Hannah is shown socialising with various kids.
I can understand the parents’ grief and their desire for justice but to me the suit illustrates what didn’t work with the show- instead of showing Hannah’s increasing mental instability and depression (which was the reason for her suicide) the suit was part of the revenge side of the show- along with the tapes.
the two leads are great actors and that girl is GORGEOUS
Yes and yes. And I love that he was in Lost!
I was really only interested in the Hannah/Clay storyline, so I’m not very excited about the second season. I’ll give it a chance though.
yes, they had great chemistry
I didn’t get this show…
It felt like an adult’s idea of how teenagers are, like a faux-reality mascarading as a slice of life (common enough amungst tv I guess).
Also, did anyone else feel like the actor playing hanna and the actor playing her best friend/enemy should have been switched? every time someone would describe them it sounded opposite to what I was seeing (Hanna as the cynical outsider with an ‘edgy’ persona and the bestie as a quintessential popular, by the books character).
As the mother of a teenage girl, I found this very hard to watch. I kept hoping, as futile as it sounds, that in the finale we’d find out that Hannah was actually saved. Eternal optimist, I guess.
I watched the first season and while it was fine I won’t be watching the second. I just felt this should have ended with one season. Having Hannah “live on” is exactly the problem with glorifying her suicide. And by glorifying I mean the idea that her tapes gives her some sort of post life resolution. Its not realistic and it seems to stray from the meaning of the book
Hmmm interesting..will be watching season 2. Curious to know what happens with the other kids.
Ugh. I hate the idea of this show and have talked to my daughter about not watching it. She’s 11 and I can only imagine how damaging it could be. Kids are so vulnerable. Luckily, while some of her friends have watched it, she thinks it sounds boring. I hope it stays that way. And I hope season 2 is boring and it just fades away……
To me, it will be interesting to see Hanna’s parents reactions and coping mechanism once learning that her legacy was the tapes aimed at students and that she did not leave any direct message/apology/explanation to them. Did not make sense to me on the show.
This show is ground breaking. Many people find the subject matter controversial which is unfortunate because refusing to acknowledge and talk about mental health issues only makes them worse. I really hope that as many parents as possible take the time to watch this and hopefully start having discussions about mental health with their children. One of the last taboos in society! No, the show is certainly not perfect but then neither is life. It is a good start though. Signed, mother of 22yr old, 19yr old and 17yr old children.
