Sharon Stone’s sons present her with “Mother of The Year” award

When I first saw this headline, I thought this was one of those, “Aw, Sharon Stone’s kids made her an award out of toilet paper tubes and crepe paper” things. But no, they handed her a real, honest to God award. As I’ve said, I can never fault Sharon for her commitment to health research. Wednesday, she was recognized by the Associates for Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer Studies (ABCs) at their Mother’s Day Luncheon. Sharon is, of course, mother to Quinn, Laird and Roan. We learned recently that she suffered three second-trimester miscarriages due to lupus-related issues. So what makes this story especially heart-warming is that the ABCs selected Sharon as their Mother of the Year Award recipient and her sons presented it to her. Not just presented but they each wrote their own speeches telling her why they felt she deserved it.

Mother’s Day came early for Sharon Stone!

The actress’ three sons — Quinn Kelly, 10, Laird Vonne, 12, and Roan Joseph, 16 — presented her with the Mother of the Year Award on Wednesday at the Associates For Breast and Prostate Cancer Studies (ABCs) Mother’s Day Luncheon in Beverly Hills.

“My mother deserves this award. I love you mom,” Laird said in his speech, and Quinn added, “She is loving, caring and a great person.”

Roan included that the best advice his mother has given him “is to treat others the way you would want to be treated and to put your best foot forward.”

Stone, 59, was clearly touched by the self-written speeches made by her sons  — whom she adopted in 2000, 2005, and 2006 — and said, “I’m grateful my kids chose me, I am a lucky mom.”

“Motherhood didn’t come easily, but it came lovingly to me by angels,” Stone said in her acceptance speech. “We’re a happy and lucky family. That is the credo we stand for.”

She added: “We have a choice about what we teach our children — we have to stand tall and say yes to love.

Of handling single motherhood, she told PEOPLE shortly after adopting Laird, “I multitask … I have more love, help, friendship and kindness than at any other time in my life.”

Okay, even for a non-sentimentalist like me, that’s really sweet. Sharon has primarily kept her kids out of the spotlight so it’s not like they’re used to being so public. They must have really wanted to crow about their mom if they got up in front of a roomful of strangers and read their own words. I wonder if Sharon knew they were the ones presenting this to her? I love how she said, “I’m grateful my kids chose me,” that’s a lovely way to put it. She sounds elated and I don’t blame her. I’d be beside myself if my children spoke favorably of me. I won’t hold my breath, though. At my house, my designation among my kids is Worst Mother Ever and they take pleasure in adding to the list that awarded me that title. It’s said with a laugh, yes, but seriously, if my kids gave this speech they would gleefully announce how I changed the endings to their children’s books to my advantage and that I constantly compare them to the dog, who is, in my defense, infinitely better-behaved.

Since May 10th was Mothers Day in Mexico, and Sunday is Mothers Day in the US, let me wish you all: ¡Feliz Día de las Madres!

My kids do the same Hecate. They have memories like elephants of every mistake I’ve made and they gleefully pile on with new additions to the list – all in good fun.

Good for her for promoting cancer research work but wasn’t she horrible to one of her children’s nannies?

I liked her interview. Sounds like a pretty together Mom. The last time I saw my Mother alive was Mother’s Day so its always a sad day for me.

Sharon Stone has the best plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, or maybe New York. Where ever he or she is, and what ever Stone paid, it was worth it. She looks 40 and doesn’t look “done.”
