Last Friday, prior to the premiere of the reboot of cult TV series Twin Peaks, Showtime threw a star-studded Hollywood premiere at the Ace Hotel Theater, and many of the show’s returning favorites were in attendance. After what seems like an eternity, the latest incarnation of the show, which ran two seasons from 1990 to 1991 and spawned a 1992 feature film, has finally returned. Showtime, which requested that the stars kept tight-lipped about what they saw at the premiere, released the first four episodes of the long-awaited return of the mystery series on Sunday. The new episodes delivered a lot of WTF moments, some new characters and typical David Lynch strangeness. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. The reboot delighted fans, but didn’t bring in monster ratings. The premiere netted an estimated 506,000 viewers. But, hey, let’s talk fashion.
Let’s start with one of David Lynch’s favorite actresses Laura Dern (from my favorite Lynch flick, Wild at Heart), who has yet to make an appearance in the reboot. The 50-year-old may have thought a fashion tribute to Lynch was in order for the premiere. Her dress by Rodarte is just as schizophrenic as the first four episodes of the new season have been. It’s quite a mish-mosh, without any unifying theme. I do like the top, especially the plunging neckline, but it doesn’t look right with the asymmetrical skirt. I’m also not wild (at heart…see what I did there?) with the sequins and (what looks like) brocade combo. But Laura looks amazing – I’d just like to see her in another dress – maybe like the one she is wearing as her character in The Last Jedi, perhaps?
It appears that 46-year-old Mädchen Amick, who plays Shelly, also went with a Lynchian fashion statement in a dress by Raisa & Vanessa. Mädchen also looks ageless, but that dress is so much WTF. Don’t get me wrong, I love a black gown, but this one got cut-out crazy. And that long fringe on the sleeve is more Met Gala than cable television premiere, don’t you think? Sadly, it’s not much better from the back.
Sheryl Lee, who plays the ill-fated Laura Palmer, is also 50, which I can’t believe. Maybe David Lynch has a connection to some sort of fountain of youth. She was the victim of some unfortunate makeup (I think it was the lipstick) when she appeared on the first episode of the new season (I guess the Black Lodge can do that to a woman), but here, she looks absolutely radiant. I’m not nuts about the shapeless dress though – it looks like something from the Mrs. Roper starter collection, but the navy blue shade brings out the best in her hair and eyes. The look at least is better than being wrapped in plastic.
Grace Zabriskie, who plays Laura’s mother, is giving me “mother of the bride” here. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. She plays a mother and she’s 76. I do like the burgundy color on her and she does look quite elegant.
Kimmy Robertson, who plays the much-needed comic relief role of ditzy sheriffs’ department receptionist Lucy Moran, showed up in an outfit that definitely fits her character’s daffy personality. I mean, Lucy is still freaked out by cell phones. If you got rid of the furry wrap and the scrunched pony tails, it’s a cute dress and I love the shoes. Out of all of the actors who have returned for the show, Kimmy has changed the least – might be the child-like innocence of her character. Or good genes, I’m not sure, but I want to look that young when I’m 62 (yes, I had to Google that, and I can’t believe it).
Speaking of good genes, Kyle MacLachlan is still as swoon-worthy as he can be, and he makes 58 look good. He’s already proven he looks great in a suit as Agent Cooper, so it’s no surprise that he looks downright dapper in this blue suit. Kyle’s wife, Desiree Gruber, looks effortlessly cool as well in a black shift dress. Would you expect any less from the Executive Producer of Project Runway?

AWFUL.. BUT SHE IS IN GOOD COMPANY. LOTS OF AWFUL
Yeah. I would expect that the producer of Project Runway (Kyle’s wife) would remember to have them spray tan her feet when she they spray her legs.
I’m so happy there is Twin Peaks talk here. It’s one of my partners favorite tv series, so I watched it all over the last year to get ready.
Watching the last episode of season two, then the first episode of this season was a bit jarring.
Everyone looks great, the dresses are well… interesting.
Did you like season 2? I found it a slog to get through until the last two or three episodes.
I can’t comment too much yet because I’ve only finished the first episode and I needed a Black Lodge break.
I can say the first seasons held up though, because this was my first viewing and halfway through the first season I was hooked.
I’ll be making the plunge and watching the rest this weekend hopefully, but I’ll keep with it if the first few aren’t great knowing the end episodes are good.
Any major imprsssions or take aways from it that aren’t too spoilery?
Season 2 gets really goofy and Lynchy, and the tonal shift gave it a bum rap among the people who watched it live as it aired. I think binging it now kind of absolves those oddities, and there are so many funny and touching moments between the characters you love that the bizarro sh*t happening around them somehow seems more believable. I think Lynch (and Frost) are just masters of catching that sweet spot between unreality and authenticity. The last episode of the season is largely hailed as a masterwork, Agent Cooper is still one of the most compelling detectives in TV history, and the weirdness of the 2nd season may actually prepare you better for the revival. I just watched the first two hours on Showtime, and it was weird af. In the best way possible!
Hang in there. The first two episodes were atmosphere and world-building. Things start picking up in 3 &4. Maybe wait until 5 comes out on June 4, though — waiting for that after what happened in the 4th one is killing me!
Mr. Jackpots will break your heart — here’s hoping that his knack for beating one-armed bandits will come in handy later.
Other things to look forward to:
Cossacks are in Russia.
It’s probably not the bunny.
Hawk is still the very best.
I loved this show….although I do recall it suffered a very noticeable dip in quality somewhere in the middle and turned into the soap operas it was supposed to be parodying. It redeemed itself with the finale but I dont think I ever forgave it for making me trudge through weeks of pointless over wrought romances. And that movie! I mean whhhhhhhhhhhyyyyyyyyyyyy?! It was so bad that it crossed the line where bad movies can become fun. Just terrible.
I’ll make time for this season of course. But with extremely muted expectations. There had better be a red room scene is all I’m saying.
Loooove Twin peaks! I’ve only watched the first episode of the reboot so I can’t form an opinion on it yet. I love David Lynch’s weirdness but my husband just does not get it. And no one in my real life is watching it (yet).
And these dresses are all horrible.
I just love that Laura Dern has been getting so much more work lately. She is a fine actress that deserves more recognition than she has gotten in the past. I wonder if she got new representation. They are definitely earning their paycheck.
Gruber needs to get off the red carpet and hurry up and announce when the new season of Project Runway is going to start.
Netflix has me so whipped. I think I am going to wait until all the episodes drop before I start watching the new season of Twin Peaks.
I love that she is working so much too. And Grace Zabriskie. Grace should be in all the things.
Grace is awesome.
Aiobhan, don’t you mean Showtime has you “whipped?”
In this case I mean Netflix. I have gone through so many binge sessions on Netflix ( Kimmy Schmidt, Buffy, The Fall, etc) that now I find it somewhat annoying to wait each week for a new episode. I just like the whole concept of watching things on demand now. I am old enough to remember when you had to watch things the day they aired or you would not be able to watch it until the summer time when reruns aired.
Other than this show, Shameless, and an occasional movie I don’t really watch Showtime much. I had to quit Ray Donovan because I hate everyone on the show with a passion of ten thousand suns.
Everyone looks like a$$. IMO.
Dreadful dresses and can someone hand Laura Dern a comb?
Can we not use the word shizophrenic to describe a dress?
Only of you spell it right! 🙂 Unless that was a Freudian slip?
Well. I watched the first episode and I had to force my self to not turn it off. I was such a fan. Partly becahse I associate Twin Peaks with some of the best of my childhood memories. Partly because growing up when I finally got to watch it in 95 or 96 I was so facinated by the mystery. When I found out it will be back now I rewatched it all over again. The first season is perfect. And it gets to attached to the characters and the place that was its own character, even cherry pie and coffee had its own aura. And I realized that the second season for me was an extension of that inversment that was built up in the first season. I also thing that the story lost it’s track in season two, slowly but since the moment we find out who killed Laura the show for me starts to loose it’s intimacy that was built in season 1. The new season has nothing remotly even aluding to that small town intimacy. I think probably Lainey in the review of first two seasons of Twin Peaks captures the best way the thing that went wrong with the show (http://www.laineygossip.com/revisiting-original-twin-peaks-ahead-of-reboot-premiere/47052). The third season has no intimacy and no allusion to nostalgia that I would imagine would have to draw in the fans of the show like me. And for someone for whom this show is not part of their personal experience like for me growing up, there is too much “weirdness” to draw you in. They, it seems to me, did not consider that we now live in a different era. This is an era of TV, there are many good quality shows compeating for attention and for me, despite the sadness, it absolutely missed the mark. And I truly was emotionally attached to that show. I am not sure I will give this season another try. At least not in the near future.
Looks like the object was to use every piece of scrap fabric in the leftover-bin.
Wild at Heart is THE best Lynch movie! Yep, the dresses are uh lacking.
I love Laura Dern so much but that dress is seven shades of stupidity.
Love Dern’s dress other than the asymmetrical hemline and what seems to be a missing bit of fluff near her leg in front.
What is going on with these people?! It’s 25 years the world is waiting for their comeback and all they can think is something like “oh yeah I’ll dress up for the occasion like a mature-gala- harley quinn” or…everything else we can see here. It’s a “lynchian” mess, with the exception of agent Cooper . But I’ll pardon everyone coz hell, they were in the best tv show ever.
Laura Dern. Thank you for your beautiful, natural face. Your face looks like you have seen alot of joy and laughter. Thank you for reminding me of what a life of joy should look like when you are an older woman.
Yes-coming on to say the same thing. It’s so refreshing to see what someone looks like when they’re not all shot up with botox and fillers.
For a minute there, I thought Kimmy was Victoria Jackson!!
LOVE Laura Dern! Put her next to a lady with LA face at the same age and you’ll see how too much crazy fillers and botox look on women over 50. Laura is a breath of fresh air in plasticwood.
Omg, Kimmy’s outfit! That’s exactly what I’d expect her to wear.
Kyle MacLachlan might be the nicest guy in showbiz. Anyone who asks for a birthday shoutout on twitter will get it – got mine last year! He’ll post fan art on instagram. After 25 years, he still loves the show that made him famous and its fanbase. He just seems like an absolute peach of a man.
Mädchen’s dress is peaking at me and that’s so unsettling.
