“Inside the Obama White House” special draws 9.1 million viewers

NBC News ran the second of a two hour special last night, “Inside the Obama White House,” which they called “the closest, best and most accurate portrayal ever of the real West Wing.”

The first hour of show aired on Tuesday gave us a fun glimpse into the inner workings of the White House. With 9.1 million viewers, The NY Times notes that it wasn’t the most viewed in its time slot, but was still the top rated show for the 18-49 demographic. NBC kept the momentum high with fast-paced segments and a modern score that seemed too heavy-handed at times. You get the feeling that the people behind the President are smart, committed, technically adept and excellent at thinking on their feet, just like their boss. NBC showed us firsthand how Obama and his team deal with the ever-changing demands of the day, including the controversy over Supreme Court nominee Judge Sotomayor’s much-repeated 2001 comments about race and background influencing her decisions. It was a fascinating show that felt like a more compelling, real version of the “The West Wing.”

The first hour dealt with plenty of work issues and official business, but the best part was when Obama hit up a local burger joint to bring back some food for his staff. People screamed and jumped up and down to see Obama pick up takeout, and you could tell he got a huge kick out of it too.

The second hour of the show featured more intimate profiles with people close to the President, including Joe Biden, Michelle Obama, and chief of staff Rahm Emanuel. There was also a segment about Sasha and Malia but it was just stock footage and photos and they didn’t include any interviews. It was touching when they showed the swingset that’s visible from the oval office and reminded us that it was the first time young kids have been in the White House since the Kennedy years. We heard from Obama personally at several points, and his sit down interview with Brian Williams capped off the two hour special:

On Sasha and Malia growing up and dating:
“You get a little nervous about how they’re going to adjust when they’re teenagers… They start having dates. They’ve got secret service guys following them around. There may end up being issues of… is somebody asking them out because they’re the President’s daughter or because they like them?

“So far, knock on some wood, they are just happy and healthy and well adjusted – and not full of themselves, and that’s the quality that Michelle and I want to retain most.”

Brian Williams said he had a strategy of showing up at the door with a shovel when his daughter’s dates came over and Obama joked that it didn’t hurt to have a bunch of secret service with guns around.

At the end we heard from Obama about how he’s pushing forward and working on some of the many challenges the US is facing. He said he’s optimistic about the future but also discussed some steps we need to take to repair the economy, like controlling healthcare costs. As for all the hype and attention that surrounds him, he said that he could do without that but that it comes with being President.

On the necessity of private planes and traveling with a large staff
“I would love to be able to take the shuttle or a commercial flight or not have a 15 car entourage when I go out to get a hamburger or go to Malia’s soccer game. Unfortunately this is not the nature of being President in these modern times.”

At the end of every day, Obama reads letters sent in from Americans. He picks 10 to respond to the next morning.

On his daily practice of reading letters sent in from Americans
“Those letters are powerful. They give me a nightly tutorial on why I sought this job. The American people have a pretty good sense of the fact that we’re in some tough times, but that we can get through it. In heart, I think the American people are optimistic and that gives me optimism.”

On picking up Bo’s poop from the White House lawn
I was just about to publish this when Kaiser let me know her favorite part – Obama talked about taking the first puppy Bo out for walks at night and picking up his poop in the shadow of the White House. I was looking for that clip, but then TMZ posted it for me. Obama said:

“One of the highlights of my day is… around 9:30, I’m the guy with night shift on the walk. We go out and we’re walking and I’m picking up poop and here in the background is the beautifully lit White House. It’s quite a moment.”

I really enjoyed watching this special and came away with the sense that there are a lot of hard working people behind the President and that he’s giving his all. You can watch “Inside the White House” in full online on MSNBC.

Uh, CB Sasha and Malia are not the first young children in the White House since the Kennedys… Jimmy Carter’s daughter Amy was 9 when her dad became president.

It’s nice that Malia and Sasha are going to private school. Poor Amy Carter went to public, as part of her father’s campaign promise. There is nothing wrong with public schools (I went to them), but poor Amy couldn’t go outside during recess or gym class because of secret service security concerns. She has bad memories of her time in the WH.

  2. HEB says:

Sorry Amy Carter, you don’t count as a young kid.
I guess that means Malia Obama doesn’t count either since she’s older than Amy was.
    You go Sasha you youngin!!

I found the 2-night series to be very educational. I don’t care what anybody says, I really like President Obama and First Lady Michelle and I love the people that he has chosen to work with him in the White House. One of the things that really struck a cord in my heart is when Prez Obama went on a burger run for himself and his co-workers! That was great…NOT to many bosses would do that, if anything the boss would ask YOU to go and get their lunch! That act just spoke volumes to me.

Chelsea Clinton was 12 – not quite as young, but still had to go through very tough and awkward times in front of the whole world.

Ditto @ Roni, Nice to see a people’s president in office. I have more and more respect for President Obama and First Lady Michelle… I think they relate so well to everyday people and keep it real as much as possible.

According to your link CB, (CBS)the Mentalist repeat won in that 9PM time slot overall with 10.8 million viewers.

@Lucky & Heb – thanks for the correction! The show really said that Sasha and Malia were the first young kids in the White House since the Kennedy era. It’s in Part 5 of the Second Hour of the show here at 2:41 in

Maybe it was an oversight or they meant more than one young child.

-edit @Daisy – that is weird, I got confused by the lead paragraph and the title of the story, which said that the Obama special “won its 9 p.m. time slot in the important demographic of adults 18 to 49.” So it didn’t win overall just in that demographic I guess. I will fix it thanks!

    I liked the segment.

One of the things that definitely had me nodding was the part where he spoke about commercial flights and all that jazz.

I’ve heard people give him crap about that from all over and honestly? It’s laughable. Why? Because what everyone seems to forget is that PEOPLE TRY TO ASSASSINATE HIM on a regular basis. There have been attempts on many presidents and really, I wouldn’t doubt for one second that it’s probably worse for him given the deep-seated hatred so many seem to harbor towards him.

P.S. Boy do I understand the poop part :(. Gotta love the bone bags.

  9. Kaiser says:

Rahm was hilarious! I loved all of the footage of him throwing the cameras out of various offices.

And of course, REGGIE LOVE!!! Damn, that man is fine.

I swear, when Pres. Obama was talking about dog poop, Michelle looked embarassed.

  10. nimble minx says:

picking up your own dog’s poop when you’re the POTUS is one way to keep yourself grounded, I guess!

Thnaks for making that point. He has had more threats in 4 months than any other President in history. The trip to NYC counldn’t have been done any other way than AF One as he has to take security most seriously and they are entitled to down time. I’m excited about the family time coming up this weekend in Paris with the girls and can’t wait to see the pix. He is doing an amazing job and what a job he has cut out for him.

  12. Annie says:

Thanks. And you know, I never begrudged ANY president that. I mean, I wasn’t old enough to remember the JFK assassinations, but everyone I’ve spoken to that has remarked it as something that was absolutely crushing for the American people and frankly, I hope it doesn’t happen again.

It is our right to disagree, but disagreement should never result in violence of that nature.

This was a great special! My family enjoyed watching it.

  15. Dirty Martini says:

    (yawn)

Didn’t know it was on. Dont care that I missed it. Didn’t vote for him.

He’s a socialist and he’s bankrupting this country’s future with all these bailouts.

And his wife’s fashion sense is atrocious.

I call ’em like I seem ’em.

  16. CeeJay says:

Well Dirty, you might want to recall that the Bush administration started the bailout ball rolling. Bush administration Tres. Secretary, Henry Paulson pushed the first 750 trillion through congress like it was a 25 dollar check in a birthday card. If not for the lack of official oversight of the financial sector, which allowed so much corruption in that era, none of this would be necessary.

  17. Ursula says:

Poor Poor ‘dirty Martini’ it must be called over there.

I missed it so I am hoping to catch it from someone who taped it or from Youtube.

  18. Roni says:

The special comes on again tonight on NBC…June 5th. I don’t know if it comes on at 8pm or 9pm.

  19. Yae says:

Thi man hasn’t accomplished anything productive except pay off criminal mortgage companies & bankers since he’s been in office. I’m not impressed by him at all. I’m sourly dissapointed.

  20. Yae says:

Oh but he is trying great things. Regulating the internet, forming youth brigades (Rahm Emanual ex Israeli soldier and dial citizen of Israel’s brainchild) Yay our military will now openly be Israels toy soldiers. **sigh Very very dissapointed in this man.

  21. Fruitshakes says:
