Sterling K. Brown loves running: ‘I feel free and light’

As much as I hate to see the summer come to an end, it does mean that fall TV is coming back – and with that comes the eagerly anticipated second season of NBC’s This is Us. While shooting episodes for the new season, Sterling K. Brown, who plays Randall, makes sure to fit some running into his schedule.

The handsome 41-year-old actor is no stranger to working out, as he showed us while filming The Predator back in March,. In an interview with Runner’s World, he explained that he’s been running regularly since he was a 21-year-old student at Stanford University. (He also ran track in high school, but admitted hen was a “terrible sprinter.”) Since then, Sterling has strapped on his sneakers to get some miles in during his off time. He told the magazine that he aims for four miles, four to five times per week and said, “It feels good to look in the mirror and say, ‘I did something for myself today.’”

Also in the interview, Sterling, who confesses he has a “psychological zeal” about running said that he has a friendly running rivalry withy Justin Hartley, who plays his TV brother, Kevin and shares how he prepares to run “in character” for the show.

On what he loves about running:
Running gives me the confidence to be at my peak throughout the rest of my day. I feel free and light. In the midst of this storm that has become my life, giving myself that little bit of time helps me endure the craziness of everything else.

On his rivalry with co-star Justin Hartley:
“…we’ll go for these jogs, and then the camera will call cut but we’ll continue running after cut has been called. And each time, we’re about neck and neck. So if we actually had to run in real life, it’s too close to call. It’s really too close to call. He’s taller so he’s got the longer gait. I’ve got quicker turnover than he does. It’s too close to call.”

On which This Is Us co-star is most likely to join him on his runs:
“It’s just been Justin and myself who does most of the running together. I’m sure Milo would run with us if we asked him to. My wife would probably run with me, Susan Kelechi Watson, if I asked her to too. But Justin and I are probably the ones who are the most apt to get out and go for a good run.”

How he prepares his character, Randall, for running scenes:
“If there’s a day when Randall has to run on the show, like you’ll only see about a minute or two minutes of it but sometimes I will get on the treadmill beforehand to warm up because I do everything kind of all out. Because it’s just easier for me to do it than pretending. I’ve run 6 miles on set on the treadmill getting ready for that one minute they use for the script.”

If there’s anyone who should be an ambassador for the benefits of running, it should be Sterling, because, damn. Sorry, Kevin Hart. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait until September 26 and the kickoff for season 2 of This is Us. The cast dished about the new season at the Deadline Hollywood This is Us Emmy panel earlier this week. Show creator Dan Fogelman promised that Randall and Beth’s adoption storyline will be a big part of the new season and assured fans of the TV couple that “Randall and Beth will never separate in this show. They’ll experience trials and tribulations, and this one (season) will have a big one in front of them.” Sterling then joked, “You can talk about the polygamy storyline.” A great actor, gorgeous and funny. Oh, how I would love to be his friend.

He does such fine, detailed work, too. I love him.

    • Lindy79 says:

      He really does.

I know This is Us is sentimental ABC tv but honestly, the episode with his father had me sobbing, he elevates everything he is in. Not something I do easily. I am transfixed by him anytime I see him on screen.

      • magnoliarose says:

I cried too. I felt his loss and I am not generally a full on crier but he is just so good.

      • Sixer says:

Yes. He really knows the difference between big and small screen. I think he’s fantastic.

      • Gemma13 says:

I sobbed as well. I’ll usually become teary eyed and find swallowing difficult, but during that episode I was full on sobbing, could barely see the TV through all the tears. I had to go get tissues and calm myself down.

He is a great actor on an excellent show and I cannot wait for the next season.

    • Nicole says:

He does. He’s good in everything he does acting wise. I’m a huge fan

      • MamaHoneyBadger says:

Count me in on that fan club. While “This is Us” gets all the press, he was amazing in “The People vs. OJ.”

  2. milla says:

Handsome man. Never saw that tv show cos i hated the plot. Good white family adopts a black kid whos parents are junkies… see my issue?

    • magnoliarose says:

I do but it isn’t handled as a cliche. They make his bio parents bad people either in fact, you sympathize with them. I think his character and his wife show a beautiful black couple and family that love each other deeply and are successful. You should give it try sometime, he is a good actor with central plot lines.

    • Nicole says:

Eh it’s a little more nuanced than that. Quote a lot actually and I don’t want to spoil it. But there’s a lot of backstory for his bio parents that is actually handled beautifully. And they also tackle racism head on including how they can’t help him as white parents. I was prepared to not like how they handled race but so far they done so pretty well

    • MamaHoneyBadger says:

The pilot was written to hook people in (as they should) so subtlety is not its strong suit, but the rest of the series has been incredible. It’s the only network show I’ve watched in over 10 years. The actress who plays his wife, Susan Kelechi Watson, is amazing too.

      • milla says:

Tnx for great responses. Much better than actual adverts for the show. I will watch it, starting this week even.

  3. Oliphant says:

Amazing in the people v oj Simpson- great actor and SO HAWT

  4. Maple Girl says:

Running is the only execersise I don’t find incredibly boring. It’s a perfect way to clear out my mind after a long day.

    • Hazel says:

Yeah, that was me, too, for two decades. An hour a day every day after work, after school, or after work AND school, whatever I was doing. It’s the best way to unwind, to make that work/home transition. For me, at least. And now I can’t run. I have Charcot-Marie Tooth (look it up) & all I can do is walk. I still do that hour a day every day, but it’s not the same.

      • Bel says:

No need to look it up as I have it too along with other chronic illnesses. Even when I have to use my walker I walk as much as possible. Used to run track (long distance) but that is something i just cannot do now either.

  5. dodgy says:

I love running, but I have such a bum ankle. I’ll run for a week, then it gets so sore I can’t run for months. So I just do a lot of walking now, and I do dog sitting for my friend for some exercise.

  6. Mel M says:

I loooovvveeee him. I binged watched Army Wives while I was pregnant with my twins and could not move. I watched on the ipad while I was in the tub for hours and when I was in bed. It’s what got me through lol. He’s so freakin sexy.

  7. Francesca Love says:

    He’s so hot.

  8. aenflex says:

I love running. And he’s pretty attractive. So yeah.
