Lady Gaga has a new documentary coming to Netflix

Good news, Little Monsters! If you simply can’t wait for Lady Gaga’s big screen debut in the umpteenth remake of A Star is Born, you can see her in an upcoming Netflix documentary.

The doc, called Five Foot Two, is making its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival before being released on the streaming service on September 22nd. The film was directed by Chris Moukarbel, who also directed the enthralling Banksy Does New York (which I highly recommend). He had full access to Gaga for a year. Spending that much time with Gaga, Chris was able to chronicle the 31-year-old singer dealing with performing, relationships, health issues and her own inner demons. In a press release, Netflix promises “an intimate and unfettered portrait of a year in the life of Lady Gaga.” The director told Rolling Stone that, “I had a rare opportunity to create a portrait of an artist with such an open heart and mind. I feel really lucky that Gaga trusted me and my vision.”

Gaga used her Instagram page to artfully promote the upcoming release, sharing a few clips from the project on Wednesday. She admitted that she has not watched the finished product yet because, as she put it, “I can’t be objective about myself.

Among the clips Gaga shared was a brief discussion of her relationship with Madonna, whom she says she has always admired, “no matter what she might think of me.” This clip leaves you with a big cliffhanger, so you’ll have to watch the doc to find out the only thing about the Material Girl that really bothers Gaga.

The clips also include a visit to the doctor to address the “intense pain” in her face, (which appears to be treated with lots and lots of needles) and a breathtaking clip of her ascension to the roof the NGG Stadium for her halftime performance at the Super Bowl.

However it’s not all glitter and glamor. Gaga gets frank and discusses the loneliness that occurs when she’s not on stage. In a scene shot soon after her split with fiancé Taylor Kinney in July of 2016, she tearfully confesses, “I’m alone, every night, and all these people will leave. They will leave and I’ll be home alone. I go from everyone touching me all day, and talking at me all day, to total silence.”

I don’t know about you, but this doc came as a complete surprise to me. That being said, I am definitely going to watch. I am a sucker for a good documentary and I really like Lady Gaga. I’m thinking this is going to be the Truth or Dare for a new generation. I can’t wait.

  3. Merritt says:

I’m seeing Lady Gaga’s show tonight.

The clips felt so contrived. It reminded me of the HBO airing of her Monster Ball, and the clips backstage where she did the overly dramatic crying about being famous and poor me, I suffer for my fans. It felt like bad acting.

The old lawsuit showed she’s never alone. She insisted her assistant sleep in the same bed as her. I’m sure she feels alone and lonely at times, but I’ve seen her play to the camera too often with too much of a dramatic effect for the viewer.

I agree. She was totally playing it up for the cameras. She’s not good at being completely natural for things like this. I’m still going to watch though. Her true self will probably come out in certain parts like when she’s smoking the blunt talking about Madonna. I feel like we will only see her with her guard down when she is under the influence of something and not 100% in control.

    • Detriotgirl says:

Exactly, Jayna. Also, in my opinion, she’s no longer popular enough to make something as relevant as Truth Or Dare. Additionally, it’s really hard for me to get behind a pop star who spends the better half of a year campaigning for an Oscar for a song about rape victims, yet continues to think it’s totally ok to work with R Kelly and Terry Richardson.

    • Artemis says:

All of this. I remember when she was squeezing that one tear out of her eye during one of her narcissistic online meltdowns about something unimportant, she loves to cry when there’s a camera in her face. Insufferable.

I also don’t believe that docu is going to be honest. She cheated on Kinney and loaded her schedule before their break-up so if she choose career and didn’t care for finding a balance, then why are you crying? She said she was happy when she was spending more time with him but I think her weight gain in that period indicates she hates not having that 24/7 attention that fame brings and seeks solace in food, not her true relationships with friends and family which fine but don’t try and make out like fame is not the end goal when she’s become even busier with her TV and film work + that jazz album. She choose that herself.

Deal with your choices like grown people do all day every day. She’s famous because she can’t live without people talking to her all day and touching her. It’s why their moaning about being famous is dishonest because a much worse fate would be nobody caring about their dumb asses and they know it deep down. It’s why they keep loading their schedules in fear of missing out or becoming unknown.

Her work with noted perpetrators as @Detroitgirl pointed out, proved this. She’s still friends with Terry and only scrapped the R Kelly video because of the backlash, she does not have a conscience which is scary.

Truth or Dare was terrible and also a false representation of her character but Madonna will always be interesting to watch. Crying and feeling sad for yourself is beyond boring and contrived when you live the life like these people and Madonna knew that so screw giving the audience deep emotions and just piss people off!

I really like Gaga but she is still bitter that people called out her copy of Madonnas ‘Express Yourself’, She thought she was so original and the best and simply while she is really good she is not the most individual and creative popstar ever.

  6. sunnydaze says:

Wow, in the pic of her in the white t and pinstriped pants – I thought that was Anna Kendrick for a second!

  7. Kim says:

I wasn’t a huge fan until I saw her in American Horror Story – she was fantastic!

  8. MoreSalt says:

I love her. My mom is taking me to see her in November, as a birthday surprise, and I’m stoked – I couldn’t justify the cost of tickets, which I was pissed about, considering she bailed on the Detroit show during the last tour but she’s my favorite artist (Artpop aside) out in recent memory. I think she’s extremely talented. I hope she stops working with creeps and does more with just her and a piano.

She does come off as contrived, but she’s a theater kid. I give her a pass on that, it’s just… what some of them do.

    • Jayna says:

You’re a fan, so I understand why she would get a pass. But I’ve never seen anyone so pretentious and bad-acting with the fake tears as Gaga. LOL I just find her insufferable. And that’s not to say that there aren’t nice sides to Gaga. There are.

Having said that, her tour looks amazing. She is not relying on backing tracks much at all compared to her last tour where they were heavily relied on, and she is really putting on a great performance from all the clips I’ve seen. Her vocals are really fantastic and great energy to the show. It’s getting rave reviews. The video of the Edge of Glory concert performance I saw online gave me chills.

The show will be worth the ticket prices Have a great time with your mom!

      • MoreSalt says:

I’m so excited to hear you say that – my mom went and saw Pink, and couldn’t stop talking about how great the stage show was. I already know I’ll be blown away, but I know ma shelled out big bucks for these tickets, I really want her to be blown away too. Thanks for the positive and kind reply.

      • Jayna says:

        Pink’s last tour was spectacular.

On the Edge of Glory is, for me, the best song Gaga has ever written or performed, but she really does bring it to another level on the Joanne World Tour

Love the Joanne album, so I’ll be watching this!
